Principal’s Introduction

Goodbyes and Best Wishes

I would like to take this final opportunity for the year to thank all parents, students, community members and staff for another rewarding year. As usual it has been an action packed and exciting year at Newborough. We have had a huge year with the focus on our Positive Behaviour Support program or as it has become known ‘The Newborough Way’. The P&C again have been superb with their support of the school with events such as Easter raffle, Ride/Walk to School days, the Disco, Bowling Night, the delightful community movie night, Bookclub, Canteen and Uniform shop plus much more. We also had the spectacular Art Exhibition highlighting the children’s portrait pictures and their autobiographies. This of course linked to the curriculum for each year level and our PBS ‘Newborough Way.’

Whilst there are so many people to thank I would like to single out several who have been absolutely wonderful. Miss Karen Tucknott, Mr Nick Stenhouse, Mrs Sharon Singleton, Ms Kate Tyndall, Mrs D’Alonzo-Barkley who are fantastic people to work with and do a great job around the Administration area. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful teaching and non-teaching staff at this school. To Mr Wes Gregory and all the P&C team who work so tirelessly for our school running all the many parent activities that support our children. To Mr Matt Gaunt who has lead our School Board with purpose and distinction for the last six years. We have recently held elections for retiring Board members Mrs Krys Hiscock, Ms Jerelyn Tierney and Mr Matt Gaunt. The Board will welcome Mr Sean Johnson, Mrs Rebecca Mitchell and Mr Callan Rose early in the new school year. One of our long serving and most highly regarded Community representatives, Ms Irene Froyland is also retiring from the Board so we will be searching for a community person who can bring the local community spirit, challenge our thinking and support the school as Irene has done so admirably. If you have any suggestions, please let me know and the Board will make a decision and offer a position.

Mrs Pam Wimmer recently announced that after 21 years associated with Newborough PS she is retiring. Pam asked to slip away quietly without fuss so we have nearly honoured that. She has been a wonderful teacher and exceptional contributor to the school through her artistic talents. Her compassion and caring for students and support of staff is legendary. Fortunately, she will remain a close friend of the school through her voluntary work of which we are so grateful.

We thank Ms Marie Morrell, Mrs Sarah Pexton, Miss Callen Toner, Mrs Alida Beck, Ms Rachael Jones and Mrs Susan Blackwell for their services to the school this year. Miss Rebecca Lane has won a position at Wembley Downs PS. Mr Blanch has been offered and accepted a six-month position at a school near his home in Yanchep. All going well he returns in the second half of 2019 in a junior classroom. Year six will have a well-known and respected full time teacher for the year given some current year five students had a disrupted 2018. Mrs Leah Pickering, Education Assistant, who has been fantastic in the Early Childhood area is also leaving. We wish all our departing staff all the very best for the future.

We are very fortunate to have some fantastic teachers and Education Assistants returning in 2019. All the class structures, classroom allocations and student placements have concluded and are under lock and key till we announce these on 31st January next year when parents come to pick up booklists. At this stage we have straight classes with no split years across the school. Of course an influx of students or large number leaving during the holidays could change this.

For all those students, staff and families who are not with us next year please take our very best wishes and appreciation for your contributions to the school. You will always be part of the Newborough family. Keep in touch and know you will be warmly welcomed back as a visitor to our school.

We say goodbye to several staff, graduating year sixes and families who have been champions of our school for many years. I encourage parents to make sure there is at least one book, “Reading is Brainfood” in every Christmas hamper this year. The more we encourage and support reading the better.

School Reopens in 2019

Office staff and Administration commence on Tuesday 29th January 2018 (Monday 28th January is Australia Day Holiday). Teachers resume on Thursday 31stJanuary. Class lists will be posted on classroom doors on Thursday 31st January to coincide with Booklist and Uniform Shop. These will be open from 9:00 – 11:00am.

Lisa Harvey’s Christmas Card Competition

Sakura Yamashita from room 7 year 3 was the winner of Lisa Harvey’s annual Christmas card completion for Newborough primary school. She received a $25 book voucher. Well done Sakura, you always put 100% into any art work you do. Congratulations.

Deputy News

2019 Bring your Own Device

For the past three years the school has been running a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or Parent Owned Device (POD) program for Years 5 and 6. This was extended to students in Year 4 in 2017. The program has been endorsed by the School Board as an option for students from Years 4-6.

If you are to provide a device, the school requires the device to meet certain specifications, along with the student and parent signing the Student BYOD agreement. We will continue our partnership with Stott and Hoare to provide a full service option to purchase a device or you are welcome to source your own device. Through the Department of Education’s arrangement with Microsoft, students are provided with a suite of Microsoft Office 365 programs at no cost.

We would like to make it clear that bringing your own device is optional. While we can see the benefits of being able to bring your own device to school, we understand that there are also many factors that you will have to consider when deciding whether to provide a device or not. We would like to assure you that your child will not be disadvantaged if the decision is not to provide a device.

Further information regarding 2019 devices from Stott and Hoare will be available on our website shortly, alternatively please don’t hesitate to contact me at Nick.Stenhouse@education.wa.edu.au or ring to make an appointment.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website.
