Principal’s Introduction
Art Exhibition
How fantastic was the Art Exhibition last week? I hope that you enjoyed seeing your child (rens) portrait and autobiography that tells their story from their perspective. The inspiration, leadership and organisation throughout has been essentially from Miss Tucknott who brought this fantastic idea from her previous school. This project links to many aspects of the WA Curriculum and the directions that we want to take in this school through our Positive Behaviour Support and curriculum initiatives. It was an exceptionally good idea. The genesis for the project began last year when much of the planning occurred. We sincerely thank the P&C for their support initially funding the purchase of the canvases. The aim was never to make a big profit but rather showcase the talents, diversity and learning that makes our school a great place.
The consultation and organisation for such an event as the Art Exhibition was huge. I was impressed with the way all staff embraced the idea and took on all the teaching, supervision, guidance, encouragement and drive to help students. This type of project work across the whole school takes a whole team approach and everyone do their bit and sometimes a bit more. Thank you to everyone who assisted in any way, big or small. Our students, staff and parents have really demonstrated all the values we espouse for all, particularly the children and really it really showed “The Newborough Way.” Well done everyone.
School Board Voting
Congratulations to Sean Johnson and Rebecca Mitchell who were elected unopposed as parent representatives on the School Board. This left one vacancy that was re-advertised. We have three nominations for this position so I am now required to run an election process. All parents currently on the school’s enrolment database are entitled to vote. This includes new parents joining the school next year and those who may be leaving us at the end of the year. Please consider the three candidates and have your say. All the information about the candidates and voting procedures can be found on the attachments provided in the newsletter. This information is available on the school’s website and paper copies and voting box in the front office. Emailed voting is also available for those who choose to do it that way.
Voting closes 3:00pm sharp Wednesday 5th December 2018.
End of Year Christmas Arrangements
The Christmas and year break is looming large and fast with only two weeks and a couple of days to go.
Student Christmas Cards
We ask that children who wish to give Christmas cards only do so in the last week of school and use the school’s Christmas Postal Service. Miss Tucknott has organised a “Santa Letter/Cards Christmas Sack’ that will be located outside the Uniform Shop for cards and letters to be dropped in before school. Our student leaders will sort out them out and distribute later in the day to minimise disruptions to classes.
Christmas Candy Canes and Lollies
We ask that students don’t hand out Christmas Candy Canes and lollies at school.
Riding to School and Stranger Danger
Riding and Walking
It is great to see the number of students riding their bikes and scooters or walking to school now the weather has fined up. Last Friday I counted 16 bikes in the bike rack and 6 scooters. Judging by the increase in pedestrian traffic using the manned crossing and those walking into the school there are a lot of walkers as well. This is the perfect time to reinforce safety messages to students at school and at home, even so close to the end of the year. One slight loss of concentration can have lifelong consequences when dealing with vehicles and safety.
It was sad to hear that one of our former students, now attending Churchlands High School, was knocked off his bike by a car going to school. Fortunately, he is alright but no doubt quite shaken.
Stranger Danger
It is also timely to reinforce Stranger Danger messages. The following advice is provided by WA Police and contains messages we regularly talk to students about at school:
- always travel in a group
- walk on the right hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic
- wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway
- stay in areas that are well lit
- stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres)
- be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably
- if you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number
- if a passing car stops nearby, never get too close
- run from a situation if you feel at risk
- give this advice to your brothers and sisters, especially if they are younger
- report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school and the police
- if you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car
- report numbers plates of cars and the clothing or distinguishing features of individuals to police.
City of Stirling Cyber Safety Parent Workshop
The City of Stirling’s Family Services is running a parenting workshop on Cyber safety and positive body image on Thursday, 6 December, 5.30pm-9.00pm at the Bob Daniel Community Centre, Inglewood.
Jordan Foster will present information on the current social media and gaming trends and most risky apps in the community. Jordan Foster is a Clinical Psychologist and a cyber-safety expert. She was the winner of the 2018 WA Young Achiever Award.
The Butterfly Foundation from NSW will conduct the workshop on Positive Body Image. Information on eating disorder, ‘fat talk’, and the link between poor body image and self –esteem and other risk-taking behaviours will also be discussed in this workshop.
Body image is consistently reported as one of the top three concerns for young people. With society’s increasing obsession with appearance and diet, it can be difficult for parents to know how to support positive body image.
The Butterfly Foundation is Australia’s leading not-for-profit for eating disorders and body image. This seminar aims to empower parents so they feel better equipped to help their child develop and maintain body confidence through their child and adolescent years.

2019 Bring your Own Device
For the past three years the school has been running a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or Parent Owned Device (POD) program for Years 5 and 6. This was extended to students in Year 4 in 2017. The program has been endorsed by the School Board as an option for students from Years 4-6.
If you are to provide a device, the school requires the device to meet certain specifications, along with the student and parent signing the Student BYOD agreement. We will continue our partnership with Stott and Hoare to provide a full service option to purchase a device or you are welcome to source your own device. Through the Department of Education’s arrangement with Microsoft, students are provided with a suite of Microsoft Office 365 programs at no cost.
We would like to make it clear that bringing your own device is optional. While we can see the benefits of being able to bring your own device to school, we understand that there are also many factors that you will have to consider when deciding whether to provide a device or not. We would like to assure you that your child will not be disadvantaged if the decision is not to provide a device.
Further information regarding 2019 devices from Stott and Hoare will be available on our website shortly, alternatively please don’t hesitate to contact me at Nick.Stenhouse@education.wa.edu.au or ring to make an appointment.

Many thanks to those who have already paid their accounts in full —it is much appreciated. A Statement of Accounts have been sent home with items which may still be outstanding. Please note that although the account may state that current items are ‘outstanding’, unfortunately this is an automatically-generated document produced through Department of Education financial software and we are unable to change it. We’re hoping that this will be amended in future software updates.
Please note: Swimming lessons for PP-Year 6 are scheduled to start in week 9 with a cost of $38 per student. Term 4 can be quite a busy term incursion/excursion-wise – if you’d like to plan ahead and start making partial payments, please speak to our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton.

All payments made to our school for excursions or incursions are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking.
Cash payments can no longer be accepted and will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services).
Our Bank Details
Newborough Primary

BSB: 016 350
Account: 3408 71304
Reference: Your child’s name and incursion/excursion name
This process ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner.
If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.
Visitors to our school and Volunteering
If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.
All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.
This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Art Exhibition Photos
We held our Art Exhibition on the 20th and 21st November last week. Here are some photos to enjoy!

Pre-primary Outdoor Classroom Day
On Friday the 23rd of November, the pre-primary classes participated in “Outdoor Classroom Day”, an event that thousands of schools around the country and world participate in.
Some of our activities for the day included shared reading of “Mrs Wishy-Washy” with a story retell zone, fishing for letters and world building, creating bubble blowers, measurement with sand and water, art, collage with natural materials, quiet reading and rest zone, construction, QR codes to find the missing numbers, naughts and crosses, and more!
It was lovely to spend time enjoying the outdoors and allowed students the opportunity to demonstrate their team work, problem solving skills and creativity outside the classroom.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website.
