Former Student Plays for the Perth Wildcats
One of our former students, Sunday Dech, made his official NBL debut for the Perth Wildcats on the weekend. Sunday is remembered at Newborough for his athletic prowess and kind and determined nature by staff who were here at that time. Sunday starred in our athletics team.
When Damian Martin was ruled out of Saturday’s game with a calf injury squad member Sunday Dech was signed as a replacement player, which will see him elevated to the full Wildcats lineup for the duration of Martin’s injury.
Dech played for the Wildcats in the pre-season, impressing at the NBL Blitz with a 16-point outing against Adelaide.
The physical guard stands at 193cm and weighs 95kg. The 24-year-old is a local product who was originally recruited from the East Perth Eagles. He was a part of the Wildcats 2014 championship success as a development player before heading to the United States to play college hoops at Metro State and Barry University.
Dech wears number 44 for the Perth Wildcats.
Parent Nomination – School Board – From Matt Gaunt, Board Chair
For the first five years of our children’s lives, Mums and Dads work hard to manage their environment. Protecting them from dangers, eating healthy food, frequent trips to the park and providing general entertainment that is line with our own values.
Upon reaching kindergarten, Mums and Dads reluctantly let go of their children as they embark on a new school. We remain involved as helpers at Kindy, cutting fruit and entertaining our child and their new friends in the classroom and playground.
Pre-primary is a brave new world as our involvement in our child’s day to day existence is reduced to drop off, pick up and after school play. For many of us, our influence over our child’s environment is then limited to a chat with the teacher.
How can we expect the school to create the environment in line with our own values without input?
Newborough Primary School Board is your opportunity to have your say on our school’s strategic direction and values to which we aspire. With a small commitment, you can have a longer lasting impact on your children’s environment, and help guide this school to be its absolute best.
The Board meets twice a term on a Monday evening. The timing allows those that have other daytime commitments to still have the positive impact they would like on their children’s school environment.
We have an opening for a parent representative for 2019 and are seeking nominations from those that would like to contribute to this fabulous school.
Please forward your nomination by email or letter to Mr Worthy at your earliest convenience. Nominations close Friday 23rd November at 3:00pm.

Board Chair
School Development Days 2019

Deputy News
In-Term Swimming Term 4
Please be aware that this year’s In-Term Swimming lessons for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students are the last two weeks of Term 4.
The dates for this are Monday 3rd December to Wednesday 12th December.
The cost for the lessons will be $38 per child. We encourage all parents who wish to start a payment plan now to see either Sharon Singleton or Kate Tyndall in the front office to organise this.
Art Exhibition
There will be opportunities to view student’s work throughout both days and until 7pm on Tuesday 20th November and Wednesday 21st November until 5.30pm. The art exhibition will be officially launched by an assembly on the Tuesday 20th November at 8.50am on the softball outside of the undercover area. We ask that the same assembly etiquette that we request of our school community on assembly days is applied on this morning.
The exhibition will be a culmination of an integrated and rich learning experience that all students at the school have been involved in over the course of the year. The students have all been working hard to produce an autobiography, self-portrait and QR code presentation that addresses mandated content in the Visual Arts, English, Health and the Digital Technologies WA curriculum. Our Newborough Way values of Respect, Kindness, Team Work and Challenge Yourself have been an integral part of successfully engaging in this learning experience and the students have been asked to demonstrate what these values mean to them as an individual through their writing and artwork. In this way the exhibition will be a celebration of our PBS school values.
For this run to run smoothly and to be an enjoyable experience for all, there are some things you will need to prepare and be aware of ahead of time.
Firstly, the students work will be displayed in the undercover assembly area. The art exhibition will be formally opened at the conclusion of the assembly when parents can then view the exhibition. Unfortunately, we will not be allowing parents to take school age students out of their classes at this time to view the art exhibition together. Students must stay with their classes.
Students will be shown through the exhibition throughout the day class by class to ensure there is no congestion in the undercover area.
However, we realise many parents would love to view the exhibition with their own child/ren. Parents can do this by either viewing the exhibition after school on Tuesday 20th November from 2.30-7pm or after school on Wednesday 21st November from 2.55-5pm with their children and families OR visit the exhibition during your child’s allocated class viewing time. The timetable for classes viewing the exhibition is below.
Entering and exiting the exhibition will be through the assembly area main doors and there will be a lectern and staff located at the entry on the day to show you the way.
To get the most out of this experience you will need to bring a mobile phone which has a QR SCANNER app or camera. You will also need your iPhone or mobile phone’s earphones. This is important as attached to each self-portrait will be a QR code that you will need to scan to hear, view or read your child’s autobiography. With many members of the school community attending at the same time, earphones will assist you to hear the children’s reading clearly and not disturb other visitors to the exhibition.
To support or Newborough Way Values we are kindly asking that we all do the following things:
- remember that normal school rules apply
- leave pets at home
- ensure that all non-school aged children are always supervised and stay with you while you view and discuss student work
- no riding or skateboarding on the basketball courts
- no running along the verandas or in the assembly area
- respect the artwork by looking and refraining from touching it
- discuss student artwork respectfully and appreciate the effort students have placed into this work.
The artwork will be arranged in alphabetical order by surname. You can take photos of your child/children’s work and you will also be given the opportunity to purchase their self-portrait for $12.50 through the P and C which could make a great gift for Christmas or birthdays or memento of a stage of your child/children’s school life at Newborough. All unpurchased canvases remain the property of Newborough Primary School. The QR Code that will be attached to students’ art work will look something like this.
QR Code Support Videos
Please make sure you are familiar with how to read a QR code on your phone before you attend.
Here are some videos which will assist you to read a QR Code using an iPhone which has the new iOS 11 installed, so no additional software or app download necessary. You simply use your phone’s camera.
This video will show you how to install and use a QR scanner on an android phone
We look forward to your attendance on the day. The` children will be eager to showcase their learning and creativity.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2018
As per last semester, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 10th December 2018 (Week 10, Term 4)
The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:
- timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
- administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
- an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
- parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.
To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.
Reading the Report – Fluctuation in Grade Allocations.
The grades allocated by teachers at the end of the year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling and throughout the school year, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in Semester One, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement this semester. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.
If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.
Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!
Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.
We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.
Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.
Absentees
Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

Thank You
Administration Staff

Child’s Play Music
It was very exciting when Mr Duncan from Child’s Play Music visited the Kindy and Pre-primary classes to show all the instruments that he had made from recycled materials. We played on a thongaphone and a metalaphone! The drums were very loud and noisy. Mr Duncan, the conductor, held a baton and we played in his orchestra. We learnt that “crescendo” is to play louder and “diminuendo” softer and quieter. It was lots of fun

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is at the link below.
