Principal’s Introduction
School Board
The Newborough Primary School Board has been recognised as a highly functional unit within the West Australian Independent Public School system. With a solid membership of 5 parents, 3 staff and 2 community members, the Board has established a good relationship with Newborough Primary’s school leadership.
The Board provides guidance on the school’s strategic direction including objectives, priorities and general policy directions. In addition to this, the Board approves the extra charges required for the provision of materials, services and facilities, items to be supplied by students, as well as other charges which may be needed for the purpose of optional components of the school’s education program.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be a member of the Board for 6 years. Working full time has not allowed me to have a significant contribution within the P&C or within my child’s specific classes. The Board has allowed me to contribute to the school in other ways. During my time on the Board, we have introduced and approved the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) for years 4 to 6, established a school patron, lobbied local government for staff parking facilities, established a facilities sub-committee to determine options for the ongoing security of our school as well as dealing with aging infrastructure, lobbied government for the ongoing support of our chaplaincy program and had significant input into two business plans.
This is a great opportunity to make an active contribution to your child’s school around any existing commitments you may have.
Our Board meets twice a term at 7pm on a Monday evening. We currently have three parent vacancies for 2019 for which nominations are currently open. I can highly recommend taking the opportunity to be part of the Board and encourage you all to take the chance to be closer to the school. Mr Worthy is accepting nominations now.
Don’t miss out.
It is one of the best decisions I made for my children’s schooling.
Matt Gaunt
Newborough Primary School Board Chair
Nominations Close Monday 5th November. Send expression of interest to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au
Perimeter Fence Community Consultation
As required by the WA Planning Commission the following letter has been distributed to all households on streets adjacent to (facing) the school. Parents and community members are also welcome to respond.
To the Householder
I am pleased to announce that Newborough Primary School has gained limited funding for the installation of a security fence around the perimeter of the school buildings.
This fence will improve staff, student and visitor safety. It will also discourage the antisocial behaviour that has resulted in high levels of vandalism of facilities and hostility towards staff out of hours.
The proposed plan is available for viewing in the school office until Friday 16th November 3:00pm for comment. The plan is also available as a pdf on the school’s homepage:
http://www.newboroughps.wa.edu.au/
The WA Planning Commission require comments and complaints to be made in writing to the school Principal including your contact details to allow for follow up on any issues that may arise.
Yours Sincerely
John Worthy

Proposed Staff Car Parking
The Department of Education have conducted a site audit of our current parking and traffic movement around the school following a letter of concern sent to them by the School Board’s Facilities Sub Committee. It was acknowledged that Newborough PS has Zero onsite staff parking bays and that street parking was now not considered onsite parking. Previously we had been advised that we had 58 bays on Wilding and Newborough Streets. As a result of this audit the Department commissioned a feasibility study for a staff parking upgrade that has resulted in two options to be considered in the next budgeting round. These options include:
Option 1 |
16 car bays and 1 ACROD bay (Total 17 bays) ($47 000) |
Option 2 |
20 car bays and 1 ACROD bay (Total 21 bays) ($70 900) |
Either of these options will reduce congestion for parking around the school and improve safety for students, staff and visitors. I have been advised that our parking situation is a high priority. We now wait to see how we go in the next budget period in 2019.
Newbie Knights Logo Winner
The Newbie Knights are pleased to announce that Riley Cooke from Year 6 was the winner of the Newbie Knights Logo competition. This was a very competitive process with 62 entries from Pre-Primary to Year 6. Riley will work with Mrs Kobe Koerber who is a graphic artist to modify the logo into a logo friendly format, much the same as our Positive Behavior Logo created by Tahni Blatchford just over a year ago. Riley also won a voucher and certificate signed by all the Newbie Knights.

Statements of Accounts
Many thanks to those who have already paid their accounts in full —it is much appreciated. A Statement of Accounts have been sent home with items which may still be outstanding. Please note that although the account may state that current items are ‘outstanding’, unfortunately this is an automatically-generated document produced through Department of Education financial software and we are unable to change it. We’re hoping that this will be amended in future software updates.
Please note: Swimming lessons for PP-Year 6 are scheduled to start in week 9 with a cost of $38 per student. Term 4 can be quite a busy term incursion/excursion-wise – if you’d like to plan ahead and start making partial payments, please speak to our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton.
Payments are to be made via direct deposit (BSB 016 350 Account No: 340871304 – child’s name and incursion/excursion as reference)
Medication
If your child requires any medication, short-term or long-term (tablets, creams, liquid medication, etc), please discuss with Administration as a form needs to be completed.
Direct Deposit Payments only
All payments made to our school for excursions or incursions are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking.
Cash payments can no longer be accepted and will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services).

This process ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner.
If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.
Visitors to our school and Volunteering
If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.
All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.
This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Book Club News
Have you heard the news? We're having a book fair in the library 7th to 9th November. Last week you should have received a flyer showing a sample of the books that will be available to purchase at the fair. Every dollar that is spent goes toward new books for the school so thank you for supporting our school.
Please consider volunteering at the fair. Even 30 minutes would be of great help to me.
Also, after two years of running the book club, it's time to pass the role onto another parent. I will be around next year to help every step of the way so you won't be alone. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to know what exactly you have to do as book club coordinator. It's not scary nor hard.

Just a reminder that we are still taking second-hand uniforms.
Would you like to get involved in the school community but don't have a lot of time? Can you spare 45 minutes a month? Then the uniform shop might be the place for you.
The uniform shop has gone through renovations last term. Why not pop and see for yourself the changes? We even have a proper change room now.

Volunteers
Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped make my transition into canteen manager run so smoothly over the last couple of terms. I hope that those of you that use the canteen have been happy with the progress so far, your children have been a pleasure to meet and feed.
Going forward it would be lovely to meet some more parents and family members who wish to come and help. This term there have been a few changes to the menu and I’m very excited to introduce a picnic box for the students as we begin the last term of the year. As the weather warms up (hopefully soon!) the students and staff can order half a sandwich of your choice accompanied with cheese and crackers, a rice ball and seasonal chopped veggies.
I am always happy for feedback and suggestions so please feel free to pop in and see me.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:
