Principal’s Introduction

Holiday Arrangements

On behalf of all the staff I wish everyone a very safe and enjoyable mid-semester two break. Hopefully the weather is good and everyone can enjoy some fun and recovery time for those who have been ill. Don’t forget the Perth Royal Show. I’ll be going.

This has been another busy term culminating with two fantastic events that really shows the uniqueness of Newborough PS. Firstly the team work efforts of our Interschool Athletics team who battled hard all day to come out winners over a very gallant Deanmore. Ms William’s was so proud of everyone in the team who gave their whole efforts performing brilliantly on the day. She mentioned that the final difference between the schools was the team work and spirit shown, particularly in the team events. Even when a baton or ball was dropped the team picked themselves up and got going strongly again. It was lovely to hear that our school values shone through with terrific sportsmanship and team spirit. Thank you to all the staff and parents who assisted on the days and parents and friends who cheered so loudly and long. The second final term highlight was the wonderful years 5 and 6 Enterprise Fete with students planning, organising and managing and using interpersonal skills through a broad range of really interesting stalls spaced all around the quadrangle. There was a lot of excitement from Kindy upwards as students visited stalls, played games and activities and helped raise funds for our graduating students.

The school office re-opens on Monday 8th October. All staff will be participating in a range of School Development activities including Positive Behaviour Support, term 4 planning, reviewing NAPLAN results and attending Curriculum meetings.

Students Return on Tuesday 9th October.

Facilities Update

Last week I met with a delegation of Department of Education officials, a contractor and Programmed personnel to conduct a site visit to identify a suitable location for a staff and visitor’s car park. We looked at several alternatives before opting for an area at the front of the school near the main entrance. This will be surveyed and preliminary design presented to various authorities for approval and hopefully funding by the Department. It was acknowledged that our school has not one single car parking bay on site. All the current parking has been kindly provided by the City of Stirling on road verges and the Karrinyup Sports Hall. The Facilities Sub-Committee of the School Board wrote to the Department expressing concern at the lack of on-site parking and the many safety concerns around the current arrangements. This has been listened to and now we await funding and final designs.

School Community Survey

This is the last week for parents, staff and students (years 5&6) to complete the school survey. You should have received your emailed link so that you can complete the survey. It is not particularly long so should only take about 10 minutes.

It is important that we get as many responses as possible so we are inclusive of our school community. The timeline for responses is short to encourage respondents to get cracking rather than put the survey to one side and so we can reflect and respond with our future planning. The survey will close on Friday 21st September at 3:00pm sharp (Last day of term 3).

Once the survey closes the information provided is graphed and tabled, then analysed by staff and the School Board. Recommendations are made and the school will act upon these as we have diligently done in the past. The results and recommendations are placed on the school’s website once the Board approves. The last survey in 2016 provided valuable information that was used to assist with developing our Business Plan 2018-2020. The school also made adjustments in consultation processes and complaints management.

Staff Appointments

I am very pleased to announce that both Science and Music Specialist positions have been permanently filled. Mrs Sam Metcalf is our new Science teacher and Mrs Andria Snelson teaching Music. Both won their positions in very competitive merit select processes.

Target Sports Soccer Program

Newborough Primary School is proud to support Target Sports who run a very slick and well organised soccer program after school on Thursdays. Watching the children engage and learn skills with enthusiastic coaches and all the goals, balls and obstacles on Hazlitt Field is a real highlight each week. There is a lot of cheering and fun going on as well as skill development and teamwork going on. This program will run again in term four.

Kindy and PP – 3:10pm
Years 1 & 2 – 4:05pm
Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 – 5:00pm

Children’s Crossing on Newborough Street

The Children’s Crossing and Road Safety Committee have advised the school that they are reviewing our crosswalk. They will be doing survey work as part of their assessment. I encourage students and parents to make very good use of this facility so that the committee know how important it is for our student and community safety.

School Board Nominations

In the first newsletter next term I will be calling for nominations for parent representatives on the School Board. There are two clear vacancies for members who have completed their three-year term, possibly a third. Current parent members of the Board who have completed their term are welcome to re-nominate. The School Board meets twice per term on a Monday evening. The Board is an ideal opportunity to get involved with the school, especially for those who would like to contribute but may have work restrictions during normal work hours. New members of the Board will be offered training and will have a mentor allocated to assist with induction onto the Board. You can find detailed information about the School Board on our school website under the ‘Our School’ tag. Click the link below or contact Board Chair, Mr. Matt Gaunt mgaunt@gmail.com or myself. John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au and we will be happy to answer questions.

Exciting News: Art Exhibition and Autobiography

To help consolidate and celebrate our PBS Behaviour Values of RESPECT, TEAMWORK, KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF, all students will be painting a self –portrait which will be displayed in an art exhibition in Week 7, Term 4.

The self-portraits will be painted on canvases purchased by the P and C but these will become a Fund-Raising activity as we will be selling the finished art works for $12.50 each to parents for you to be able to keep them after the exhibition. More information about this will come out soon.

Students will also be writing an autobiography to accompany the self-portrait and teachers will be sending home research sheets towards the end of the term asking for information about students to help write the autobiography.

In-Term Swimming Term 4

Please be aware that this year’s In-Term Swimming lessons for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students are the last two weeks of Term 4.

The dates for this are Monday 3rd December to Wednesday 12th December.

The cost for the lessons will be $38 per child. We encourage all parents who wish to start a payment plan now to see either Sharon Singleton or Kate Tyndall in the front office to organise this.

Please do not hesitate to see me if you have any queries in regards to this.

PBS School Values: Assembly Protocols for Parents

Students have been working very hard on displaying Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself at our school assemblies by:

  • Entering and exiting quietly as a class (still needs a bit of practice!)
  • Demonstrating smart ignoring of the behaviour of others
  • Acknowledging others performances
  • Being respectful and quiet when others are talking/performing
  • Showing appreciation appropriately
  • Singing the National Anthem respectfully

We would now like to ask parents to also help model our school values at our assemblies and public gathering by showing the same behaviours and ask that from now on can you please ensure:

  • All mobile phones are turned onto silent
  • All phone calls are taken outside of earshot of the undercover area (please not during the assembly in the undercover)
  • Respect is shown by listening quietly at all times and parent conversations are left until before or after the assembly
  • Small children are fully supervised and sitting quietly with you at all times to minimise the noise and disruption to the assembly please

We thank parents and visitors to our school for helping us uphold our PBS School values as well.

Kindy News

Kindy Café

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all families for your support of another highly successful Kindy Café. We really appreciate all of the contributions made by our Kindy families and the support of the school community in making this such a great success.

This year we have raised over $643, which is an outstanding achievement.

Special thanks to Amy Aguero for the generous loan of her shade shelter and to our tireless ‘band of helpers’ who worked hard to make it such a success.

The funds raised at the Kindy Café will be used to purchase additional equipment for our wonderful nature playground.

Many thanks,
The Kindy Team

Sport News

Interschool Athletics

The most closely contested athletics carnival that I can ever remember was held last Friday at Deanmore Primary School and what an absolute privilege it was to witness all of the students from every school showing great endeavor and sportsmanship as they represented their school. This year, as Scarborough and Yuluma have fewer students at their schools, their points were combined to give them the opportunity to compete in a fairer capacity. Their overall results this year have seen a huge improvement from previous years which added to the atmosphere at the carnival.

Congratulations to all of our 71 competitors selected to represent the school last week for this carnival. All of the children who participated did so with great determination, enthusiasm and effort and demonstrated the ‘Newborough Way.’ Our students challenged themselves against the best athletes from the other schools, showed kindness and respect with congratulating the other students after their events and team work by supporting everyone in the school team with their cheering and best wishes before and congratulations after each event. It was fantastic to see the effort you put into every throw, jump, race or team game that you were selected in.

After a good start to the carnival from our Tuesday competitors our school was in second place, forty points behind Deanmore. Our Friday team continued to participate strongly in all events demonstrating outstanding running skills and were just behind Deanmore before the team games commenced. With a clean sweep of the six flag races, Newborough had hit the lead and continued to do well in many of the team games. With the relays to follow, Newborough once again showed their superb running skills. At the conclusion of the carnival, Newborough was declared the winning school and retained the “Champion Shield” finishing only nineteen points clear of Deanmore. Congratulations and well done on this achievement to all students involved.

This year our Captains were Ashleigh Mackenzie and Joshua Ochoge. Molly Allan and Ben Prance were our Vice Captains. They were fantastic school leaders and their enthusiasm and efforts encouraged others to step up and follow their example. Congratulations and well done on your superb efforts.

Final School Placings:

Championship Shield:

1st Newborough
2nd Deanmore
3rd Scarborough/Yuluma
4th Doubleview

1080 points
1061 points
945 points
816 points

Congratulations to all of the children and teams who were rewarded for their efforts with ribbons on the dais. Special congratulations to the following children who were presented with medallions for being the Champion or Runner-Up Champions in their year level.

We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful parents and staff members who are willing to assist at our carnivals. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the amazing parents who assisted at the carnival this year for either the Tuesday events with the transportation of the children to and from the carnival as well as assisting our staff with volunteering to assist with the job roles for either the Tuesday or Friday events. The staff, children and I really appreciated your assistance and efforts. I would like to sincerely thank all of our staff for being so supportive and accommodating during this very busy Term. Thank you to the staff who were able to assist me with training the team games during break times and on Friday’s after school. A very special thank you and well done must also go to Mr Freeman for your assistance at Tuesday’s events and Ms Kos, Mr Blanch and Mr Stenhouse for your assistance with the Friday carnival events and the school administration team for your wonderful support of the physical education programmes.

Kind regards

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is
