Principal’s Introduction

Newborough Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to Ms Williams and all staff, parent helpers/supporters and students on a fabulous athletics carnival last Thursday and Friday. Whilst the weather did its best to be disruptive early in the week the decision to switch from Tuesday to Thursday was a very good one. Friday was delightful with a cool, still and cloudy day easing us into spring or Jilba as the Noongar seasons depict.

The highlight of both days was the efforts of all students to do their very best. It was great to see the competitive spirit and the heartening sportsmanship after events. As the Chief Judge I got see how keen place getters were to acknowledge competitors and terrific spirit returned in congratulations to the winners. On occasions when things didn’t quite go right there was genuine concern and kindness shown. Our Patron Mr Sherborne commented to me about this at the carnival and when I bumped into him at Bunnings on Sunday he reinforced these comments. He was obviously impressed. It was lovely to hear how complimentary staff in bays spoke about the behaviour and engagement of the children on what is a long day. Matt Gaunt certainly got the spirit and cheering going with a tireless effort on the PA.

For me one of the highlights of the carnival was how ALL staff got behind Ms Williams in helping prepare the children and making sure the competition went really well. The weather didn’t help during practice sessions and the demands on training, coaching, running off trial and timing, putting together teams and ensuring all children are in events is a big job. On Friday all staff came early and helped set up the shelters, got the Kindy Café going, put all the final touches in place before getting the very excited students into the bays. The work of all staff in the bays, marshalling, starting, keeping scores, running the front office, problem solving and of course overseeing the whole carnival was outstanding. A really great team effort. We had tremendous support from our dedicated parent group helping with place judging, marshalling the winners, handing out ribbons, running the Kindy Café (That raised an amazing $643 towards new Kindy play equipment), packing and carrying equipment and of course the most sensational Sausage Sizzle that catered for nearly the whole school judging by the cues.

We now look forward to the Interschool Athletics Carnival to be held next week on Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th September at Deanmore PS. MS Williams will send home notes to the 66 competitors shortly.

Open Board Meeting

The School Board will be holding an ‘Open Meeting’ on Monday 10th September at 7:00pm in the Library for any school community member, including staff, who would like to know about the operations of the Board. The ‘Open Meeting’ is a regular meeting that will include reports on the last years’ actions from the Board Chair, Mr Matt Gaunt and from the Principal, John Worthy. The focus will be on our new Business Plan 2018-2020. The meeting will include an open forum at which participants can share ideas, raise concerns and have discussion. This section is restricted to the responsibilities of the Board. General operational issues or complaints should be raised with the school through the normal channels. If you are unsure contact Matt Gaunt or John Worthy for clarification.

The Boards’ ‘Terms of Reference’, meeting minutes and other practical information can be found on the school’s website:

School Community Survey

All schools are mandated to undertake a National School Opinion Survey with Students (Upper primary years 5 and 6 students), Staff and Parents. Newborough is scheduled for 2018. This survey is currently being prepared and should be ready for distribution this week. Respondents will receive the survey via email. If you are not on email or our email list, you can request a hard copy from the front office. This will be entered manually.

The school has capacity to add questions to the prescribed ones. The school is keen to seek feedback on what the collective school community sees as our strengths and areas to improve that make our school even better.

It is important that we get as many responses as possible so we are inclusive of our school community. The timeline for responses will be relatively short to encourage respondents to get cracking rather than put the survey to one side and so we can reflect and respond with planning. The survey will close on Friday 21st September at 3:00pm sharp (Last day of term 3).

Battery Collection at School

Did you know our school is part of the School Battery Collection Program that until recently was run by the City of Stirling and has now been handed to the Mindarie Regional Council? We have a green collection bin located just behind the door in the corridor leading to the senior classrooms. The batteries are collected once a term, usually towards the end of term.

What batteries can be collected?

Household dry cell batteries including AA, AAA (single use or rechargeable), C, D, button batteries, 9V and 6V.

X Lead acid batteries, such as car batteries, laptop computer batteries and mobile phone batteries cannot be collected. Please contact your local council for details of how to dispose of these batteries.

Book Week

Congratulations to all staff and students (and a few awesome parents!) who dressed up in their nice, warm, comfy pyjamas on Thursday 23rd August to celebrate and enjoy our Book Week day.

Students were engaged in a range of activities across the day both in their classrooms and with their Buddy classes. Students also wrote poems in response to one of the CBCA’s shortlisted books, “I’m Australian Too” written by Mem Fox. It was a very successful week and we hope everyone enjoyed the activities we did.

Exciting News: Art Exhibition and Autobiography

To help consolidate and celebrate our PBS Behaviour Values of RESPECT, TEAMWORK, KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF, all students will be painting a self–portrait which will be displayed in an art exhibition in Week 7, Term 4.

The self-portraits will be painted on canvases purchased by the P and C but these will become a Fund-Raising activity as we will be selling the finished art works for $12.50 each to parents for you to be able to keep them after the exhibition. More information about this will come out soon.

Students will also be writing an autobiography to accompany the self-portrait and teachers will be sending home research sheets towards the end of the term asking for information about students to help write the autobiography.

In-Term Swimming Term 4

Please be aware that this year’s In-Term Swimming lessons for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students are the last two weeks of Term 4.

The dates for this are Monday 3rd December to Wednesday 12th December.

The cost for the lessons will be $38 per child. We encourage all parents who wish to start a payment plan now to see either Sharon Singleton or Kate Tyndall in the front office to organise this.

An excursion form for Swimming will go home soon.

Please do not hesitate to see me if you have any queries in regards to this.

NAPLAN ONLINE 2019 Parent Information Sessions

In preparation for NAPLAN ONLINE 2019, we will be holding two parent information sessions early next term.

This workshops would be valuable for all parents of all students and we strongly encourage all parents to try and attend one of these sessions.

The two parent information sessions will be on:

Tuesday 16th October at 8.50am in the school library (8.50-10.20am)
Tuesday 16th October at 7pm in the school library. (7-8.30pm)

The parent sessions will run for 90 minutes.

PBS School Values: Assembly Protocols for Parents

Students have been working very hard on displaying Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself at our school assemblies by:

  • Entering and exiting quietly as a class (still needs a bit of practice!)
  • Demonstrating smart ignoring of the behaviour of others
  • Acknowledging others performances
  • Being respectful and quiet when others are talking/performing
  • Showing appreciation appropriately
  • Singing the National Anthem respectfully

We would now like to ask parents to also help model our school values at our assemblies and public gathering by showing the same behaviours and ask that from now on can you please ensure:

  • All mobile phones are turned onto silent
  • All phone calls are taken outside of earshot of the undercover area (please not during the assembly in the undercover)
  • Respect is shown by listening quietly at all times and parent conversations are left until before or after the assembly
  • Small children are fully supervised and sitting quietly with you at all times to minimise the noise and disruption to the assembly please

We thank parents and visitors to our school for helping us uphold our PBS School values as well.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Last Thursday morning our carnival events commenced with the Long Distance, Jumps and Throwing events. The students performed admirably despite the very cold conditions. It was once again, fantastic to see so many parents, grandparents and friends supporting the students in their events and enjoying the carnival on both Thursday and Friday. Congratulations to all of the children in every faction and event who participated with great enthusiasm and effort. It was wonderful to watch you participate so enthusiastically and with great endeavour. You really did show the ‘Newborough Way’ to your team mates, faction, teachers and parents with your wonderful sportsmanship and behaviour.

As the Friday carnival ran a little overtime, I may have forgotten to say a very big thank you to all of the parents and staff who were able to assist with the carnival jobs on both of the carnival days. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by all of the Newborough community and greatly assisted to make the carnival run smoothly. Thank you to all of the teachers and staff members who assisted with the training and selection of their faction teams and for your assistance with the Athletics carnival. A very big thank you also to Tim Riley, our hard working gardener for the continued effort you have put in to make the oval and track so wonderful for our carnival. I would also like to thank the P & C for providing a sausage sizzle lunch for the children and families and the Kindy parents who provided delicious coffee and snacks for the Newborough community throughout the day.

Congratulations to Corbett Faction who maintained their lead that they held from the Long Distance, Jumps and Throwing events proving too strong and once again declared the champion team with 1,193 points. Manning finished strongly in second place with 1,004 points and Connor finished in third place with 822 points.

On the day, every child showed great individual effort, sportsmanship and at times, resilience to keep trying to do their best. Congratulations to the following children who were awarded the individual championship medallions –

Pottery News

I love pottery because you can be creative and do about anything. Pottery is a really hard skill well, that’s what I think. I think pottery is a lovely thing to do. If I had to give pottery a rate I would give it 10 out of 10. I am sooo sad when I have to leave school because we won’t do pottery. I think pottery is absolutely amazing! Margo Yr 2

Pottery was very fun. The glazing is my favourite. I made a cat, a cup and a teddy. It was very fun. Lucy Yr 1

I like pottery because putting things together is the best. Owen Yr 3

I found that pottery is fantastic because it’s a time I can express myself and I can have some fun. Yr 5

I like pottery because I like making the coil pots. I like glazing the animals that we were making. Ari yr2

I love pottery and it’s so fun. The hardest thing was making the teddy bears and the pots. The easiest thing was making thumb pot animals and the glazing. James Yr 2

I love pottery for lots of different reasons, the best of all I make new friends. In pottery we always do thing things that are easy but I absolutely love it. It’s like art which I love because I get to be myself and go into my world, considering I can’t do much with my back. This has been a great experience. Noah Yr4

Canteen Survey Winner

Thank you to everyone who completed the recent canteen survey. A random draw was completed and the Winner of the $50 canteen voucher is Josh Stewart. Congratulations Stewart family, enjoy those yummy lunches!

The canteen sub-committee will be meeting shortly to go through the survey results and determine what changes can be made to ensure our canteen meets the needs of the Newborough Community. Keep looking here for updates.

Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough Fundraiser

The Canteen and P&C will be running a Cookie Dough Fundraiser over the next couple of weeks. Order forms are due Friday 7 September

The aim of this fundraiser is specifically to raise money to purchase and install a new serving counter at the canteen. The external counter, where the children currently stand to collect their recess or order at the window is badly degraded. It is cracking, looks very unappealing and no amount of cleaning is going to improve it. We are hoping to replace this with a long wearing stainless steel counter.

Once the cookie orders are in, the dough will be distributed in week 10. Just in time for holiday snacks!

Our Canteen will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:

http://www.safetyhousewa.org.au/
