Principal’s Introduction

Redhage Basketball

Former Perth Wildcat and Australian basketball player Shawn Redhage is running a six week after school basketball skills program for years 1-6 students on Thursdays. At the first session on the 9th August, 16 enthusiastic players dodged showers whilst learning the basics. They were learning to dribble, pass and shoot. It looked like a lot of fun. Shawn’s assistant coach, John ‘Sunday’ Desh is a former student of Newborough PS who fondly remembers his time here before heading off to college basketball in the USA after high school. Sunday is currently involved with the Wildcats training squad. He met up with Ms Williams who recalls Sunday’s great athletics prowess and his kind nature.

Shawn will put out flyers later this term for next term’s program here at Newborough.

Round Table Luncheon

Last Thursday I was privileged to have a Round Table Luncheon with our student leaders and four, year two representatives. From year two we had Rebecca, Michelle, Mason and Lucas. Amelie Watson was host and did a great job asking participants what they liked about our school and what we might improve on. Ms Lydon dropped in for a while to hear what students were saying. Here is a little summary:

What we like about Newborough PS

  • People are nice
  • Everyone has manners
  • Artwork in the Library and the front office
  • Nature Playground and that we don’t have rules about stick
  • Our school values are great and everyone is using them
  • We love Golden Time and getting Class Passes
  • Enterprise Fete
  • The teachers are nice

What can we improve on?

  • Keeping the red bins empty by recycling rubbish
  • Have Nude Food days to reduce plastic waste
  • We would like a swimming pool (This one comes up regularly)
  • Bring back Surf Day for years five and six
  • Have a gold coin donation day to support the eastern states farmers who are in drought
  • Do more fund raisers for camp
  • Join up with other schools so we can share our good ideas and learn from them

Our student leaders take these ideas and look at them to see what we can do. There were some really good ones like the gold coin donation and sharing with other schools (Kids teaching Kids) that really show thought and kindness.

Book Week

This year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week 2018 in is Term 3, Week 6. (17th-24th August).

The theme for Book Week is FIND YOUR TREASURE.

Students’ will be engaged in a range of activities across the week both in their classroom and with their Buddy Class. Students will also be writing poems in response to one of the CBCA’s shortlisted books, “I’m Australian Too” written by Mem Fox. Students poem’s will be written in a similar style (four lined poems) and the content will be about themselves and/or family. Teachers will discuss our four behaviour values, RESPECT, TEAMWORK, KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF with students when conducting this whole school activity as we continue to develop an awareness of own identity, values and place in the world.

These poems will be on display in every classroom for our Open Classroom morning on Thursday 23rd August from 8.40-9.10am.

OPEN CLASSROOM and PYJAMA DAY – Thursday 23rd August 8.40-9.10am

As part of our Book Week celebrations, Newborough Primary will have our classrooms open to all parents and extended family on Thursday 23rd August from 8.40-9.10am. This is a time for parents to come into the classroom and read students’ fantastic poems and spend some time just reading for pleasure with your child in the classroom. Students can bring in their favourite story books or novels and spend the time reading for enjoyment with you. Students, staff and parents are invited to wear their pyjamas for the day; although the pyjamas must be suitable for the school environment and if students have sport on that day they will need a change of clothing. Students must still wear appropriate footwear in the playground, although may wear slippers in the classroom.

Exciting News: Art Exhibition and Autobiography

To help consolidate and celebrate our PBS Behaviour Values of RESPECT, TEAMWORK, KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF, all students will be painting a self –portrait which will be displayed in an art exhibition in Week 7, Term 4.

The self-portraits will be painted on canvases purchased by the P and C but these will become a Fund-Raising activity as we will be selling the finished art works for $12.50 each to parents for you to be able to keep them after the exhibition. More information about this will come out soon.

Students will also be writing an autobiography to accompany the self-portrait and teachers will be sending home research sheets towards the end of the term asking for information about students to help write the autobiography.

In-Term Swimming Term 4

Please be aware that this year’s In-Term Swimming lessons for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students are the last two weeks of Term 4.

The dates for this are Monday 3rd December to Wednesday 12th December.

The cost for the lessons will be $39 per child. We encourage all parents who wish to start a payment plan now to see either Sharon Singleton or Kate Tyndall in the front office to organise this.

An excursion form for Swimming will go home soon.

Please do not hesitate to see me if you have any queries in regards to this.

NAPLAN ONLINE 2019 Parent Information Sessions

PBS School Values: Assembly Protocols for Parents

Students have been working very hard on displaying Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself at our school assemblies by:

  • Entering and exiting quietly as a class (still needs a bit of practice!)
  • Demonstrating smart ignoring of the behaviour of others
  • Acknowledging others’ performances
  • Being respectful and quiet when others are talking/performing
  • Showing appreciation appropriately
  • Singing the National Anthem respectfully

We would now like to ask parents to also help model our school values at our assemblies and public gathering by showing the same behaviours and ask that from now on can you please ensure:

  • All mobile phones are turned onto silent
  • All phone calls are taken outside of earshot of the undercover area (please not during the assembly in the undercover)
  • Respect is shown by listening quietly at all times and parent conversations are left until before or after the assembly
  • Small children are fully supervised and sitting quietly with you at all times to minimise the noise and disruption to the assembly please

We thank parents and visitors to our school for helping us uphold our PBS School values as well.

Canteen News

Canteen Survey Winner

Thank you to everyone who completed the recent canteen survey. A random draw was completed and the Winner of the $50 canteen voucher is Josh Stewart. Congratulations Stewart family, enjoy those yummy lunches!

The canteen sub-committee will be meeting shortly to go through the survey results and determine what changes can be made to ensure our canteen meets the needs of the Newborough Community. Keep looking here for updates.

Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough Fundraiser

The Canteen and P&C will be running a Cookie Dough Fundraiser over the next couple of weeks. Order forms will be sent home shortly so please keep an eye out for them

The aim of this fundraiser is specifically to raise money to purchase and install a new serving counter at the canteen. The external counter, where the children currently stand to collect their recess or order at the window is badly degraded. It is cracking, looks very unappealing and no amount of cleaning is going to improve it. We are hoping to replace this with a long wearing stainless steel counter.

Once the cookie orders are in, the dough will be distributed in week 10. Just in time for holiday snacks!

New Canteen Days

Our Canteen will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is

http://www.safetyhousewa.org.au/
