Principal’s Introduction

Perimeter Fence

I have been advised by the Department of Education that our school is to receive a perimeter fence in the near future. This follows considerable school community consultation including presentation of data and feedback around the safety and security of people at the school and our facilities from a range of forums and communications. After considerable discussion and debate the Sub-Board Facilities Committee and School Board both recommended that the school approach the Department of Education for perimeter fencing earlier this year. The Board recognises the need to provide security and to maintain the community aspects that are important to us all. The Department of Education has also identified our school as a high priority, especially given the number of incidents and vandalism that is occurring. The Department’s guiding principle is that ‘Wherever possible, a consistent approach to security fencing will apply across all primary schools within Western Australia.’

I met with representatives from the Department’s Facilities Program Delivery department, Building Management and Works (BMW) and fencing consultants last week who briefed Mrs Singleton, our Manager Corporate Services, and I on the scope of works, types of fencing, timeline and construction process. We conducted a walk around the site to determine the best location of the fencing that would provide security and allow as much community access as practicable for a primary school. In essence the new fence will protect the building precinct and services access to the school. The front of the school will not be fenced, keeping the open ambience that currently exists. The main oval will not be fenced, with Jim Hazlitt Field fencing upgraded with compliant 1.5-meter fencing and access gates to all major current entry points. The sheds and school kitchen gardens will be inside the new fence area. We will also get lower fencing in a u shape around the Nature Playground that will remain open on the western side.

The process from now includes surveying and design works that will be presented to the school and Department. This may take several weeks. Once we have the design and specifications I will conduct a Public Consultation Process that allows for school community and public comment over a fourteen-day period. Parents will be advised through the newsletter and a letter drop to surrounding properties. BMW will then consider any concerns raised and make possible changes.

School Board Open Meeting

The School Board will be holding an ‘Open Meeting’ on Monday 10th September at 7:00pm in the Library for any school community member who would like to know about the operations of the Board. The ‘Open Meeting’ is a regular meeting that will include reports on the last years’ actions from the Board Chair, Mr Matt Gaunt and from the Principal, John Worthy. The focus will be on our new Business Plan 2018-2020. The meeting will include an open forum at which participants can share ideas, raise concerns and have discussion. This section is restricted to the responsibilities of the Board. General operational issues or complaints should be raised with the school through the normal channels. If you are unsure contact Matt Gaunt or John Worthy for clarification.

Book Week

This year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week 2018 in is Week 6 of Term 3. (17th-24th August).

The theme for Book Week is FIND YOUR TREASURE.

Students will be engaged in a range of activities across the week both in their classroom and with their Buddy Class. Students will also be writing poems in response to one of the CBCA’s shortlisted books, “I’m Australian Too” written by Mem Fox. Students poem’s will be written in a similar style (four lined poems) and the content will be about themselves and/or family. Teachers will discuss our four behaviour values, RESPECT, TEAMWORK, KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF with students when conducting this whole school activity as we continue to develop an awareness of own identity, values and place in the world.

These poems will be on display in every classroom for our Open Classroom morning on Thursday 23rd August from 8.40-9.10am.

OPEN CLASSROOM and PYJAMA DAY – Thursday 23rd August 8.40-9.10am

As part of our Book Week celebrations, Newborough primary will have our classrooms open to all parents and extended family on Thursday 23rd August from 8.40-9.10am. This is a time for parents to come into the classroom and read student’s fantastic poems and spend some time just reading for pleasure with your child in the classroom. Students can bring in their favourite story books or novels and spend the time reading for enjoyment with you. Students, staff and parents are invited to wear their pyjamas for the day; although the pyjamas must be suitable for the school environment and if students have sport on that day they will need a change of clothing. Students must still wear appropriate footwear in the playground, although may wear slippers in the classroom. (However, not glass slippers like Cinderella as if they break, they will make a mess. On the other hand, Cinderella did meet her Prince Charming by leaving her glass slipper behind . . . and he was rich. . . )

Year 4, Room 13 “I’m Australian Too” by Mem Fox inspired poems.

I am Australian Too

By Darryl Narkle

I was born in Melbourne,
But now I live in Perth.
I like to play a lot of sport.
Basketball is my favourite game on Earth.

I like to surf in the waves
And hope to get a barrel.
I am super dooper fast
And my name is Darryl.

My mum is kind and caring,
My dad is young and clever.
They are the best parents
And I’ll love them forever!

I Am Australian Too

By Leo Spiby

I am an Aussie,
And I live in sunny Perth.
I really love the beach,
And I love to ride the surf.

My family is quite awesome.
We love to play about.
We skateboard, surf and climb,
And love to shout it out!

I Am Australian Too

By Sophie Dallin

I’ve been an Aussie all my life.
But a bit of Canadian blood.
Three other siblings around the house,
And a dog who likes the mud.

Billie is very cute.
A kelpie from a farm,
She likes to chase our cat and bugs,
And she isn’t very calm.

Haylee is my sister.
She is always on her phone.
Whenever dad gets angry,
She always starts to groan.

I Am Australian Too

By Mia Shattock

I am from Australia.
I’m really here to stay.
I like to sing and dance and run,
And wishing others a good day.

My mum is from Mauritius.
She is really fun.
She likes to dance and a prance,
Under the rising sun.

My dad comes from New Zealand.
His name, you ask, is Norm.
When he comes to cuddle me,
He makes me feel so warm.

Exciting News: Art Exhibition and Autobiography

To help consolidate and celebrate our PBS Behaviour Values of RESPECT, TEAMWORK, KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF, all students will be painting a self –portrait which will be displayed in an art exhibition in Week 7, Term 4.

The self-portraits will be painted on canvases purchased by the P and C but these will become a Fund-Raising activity as we will be selling the finished art works for $12 each to parents for you to be able to keep them after the exhibition. More information about this will come out soon.

Students will also be writing an autobiography to accompany the self-portrait and teachers will be sending home research sheets towards the end of the term asking for information about students to help write the autobiography.

In-Term Swimming Term 4

Please be aware that this year’s In-Term Swimming lessons for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students are the last two weeks of Term 4.

The dates for this are Monday 3rd December to Wednesday 12th December.

The cost for the lessons will be approximately $45 per child. We encourage all parents who wish to start a payment plan now to see either Sharon Singleton or Kate Tyndall in the front office to organise this.

An excursion form for Swimming will go home soon.

Please do not hesitate to see me if you have any queries in regards to this.

NAPLAN Online 2019

Last Wednesday, Mr Worthy and myself went to a Professional Development session on NAPLAN Online for 2019.

This means all NAPLAN assessments, with the exception of Year 3 Writing, will move from paper based tests to computer-based assessments next year at all schools across Australia.

Some of the main benefits of students taking part in NAPLAN Online include:

  • Better assessment – and more precise results. NAPLAN Online uses a tailored test or adaptive design, where the test automatically adapts to a student's performance and asks questions that match the student achievement level, allowing the student to demonstrate their knowledge. This provides teachers and schools with more targeted and detailed information on students’ performance on the tests. Tailored testing also provides an opportunity to broaden the scope of the assessments.
  • Faster turnaround of results. Delivery of assessments online significantly reduces the time it takes to provide feedback to schools, students and parents, so teachers can respond more quickly to learning needs.
  • More engaging. ACARA research into online assessment has shown that students have engaged well with electronic tests.

In preparation for the Online assessments, the school will continue to evaluate and improve our ICT capabilities, and ensure students are ready for the skills needed for a digital based test.

We will also be conducting a series of School Readiness Tests with out current Year 3 and 5 students in Weeks 6-8 of this term, which is a requirement of the Department of Education. The tests are simply to look at our current ICT infrastructure and not the skills of the students.

We will also hold a Parent Workshop early next term for parents on the NAPLAN Online. Please look out for the flyer on this.

Sport News

Interschool Cross Country

Due to the poor weather forecast for Thursday 2 August, the carnival has been postponed until Monday 13 August. The carnival will be held at the same venue (Butlers Reserve, Scarborough) and is due to commence from 12.30 pm and conclude around 2.30pm. Good luck to all of our selected students from Years 3 – 6 for this event.

Faction Carnival: Important Dates to Remember-

Tuesday 28 August – Long Distance, Jumps and Throws Events (for selected students) 9.00am – 12.30pm
Friday 31 August – Main Carnival – 9.00am – 2.50pm

With little over three weeks to go before the Faction Carnival gets underway, our students are training very hard for this very exciting week. Once again, the children and staff are looking forward to participating in our annual faction athletics carnival and we hope you can join us on the school oval for this event.

As you are aware, there are many necessary jobs that help to make the carnival a memorable one for the students and school community. I will be sending home a hard copy request for parent helpers today (Wednesday 8 August) seeking your assistance. If you are able to help, on either the Tuesday or Friday, please complete the form and return it to your child’s classroom teacher no later than Wednesday 16th August.

This year we will continue to streamline our communication with parents and children in regards to the faction carnival. The processes this year will include the parents/guardians receiving a soft copy of the carnival program which will be sent out on Wednesday 22 August. A few hard copies will be available from the recording desk at the carnival on Friday 31 August.

Once again, the Years 1 - 6 will NOT be receiving an individual event form highlighting the events that they have been scheduled to be involved in for the Friday carnival events only. Instead, the children will be informed of what events they will participate in, which will include a Year level division race and a least two team games. Please refer to the "Parent Programme" (attached) for the order of these events. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine the exact starting time of any of these events listed on the program; however, as a guide the individual running events are held in the morning (9.00am – 12.00pm) commencing with the Year Ones through to the Year Sixes and the majority of team games are held in the afternoon from 12.30 – 2.30pm with the exception of the zig-zag relay (Years 1 – 6) and the egg and spoon relay (Years 1 – 3) held around 11.00am – 12.00pm.

Children who are in the Jumps, Throws and Long Distance events which are held on Tuesday 28 August from 9.00am – 12.30pm will receive a hard copy timetable which will indicate what events they have been selected for.

PARKING:

Please park on Hazlitt field off Wilding Street or legal parking bays around the edge of the school. Karrinyup Sports Centre parking bays are not part of the school parking and should not be used.

PARENT SEATING/VIEWING AREA ON THE SPORTS DAY:

Please note that the seating area for parents has changed this year. Parents will now be seated on the west side of the running track which will be behind and heading north of the boundary fence.

To help with the smooth running of the day and safety for all concerned, please note the following messages:

  • Enjoy a picnic lunch atmosphere with your family on the oval at approximately 12.00 – 12.30pm. A sausage sizzle will be available on the day for all families who have pre-ordered.
  • The Kindy will once again be providing a Kindy Café for parents and friends on the oval. The café is not for the children in the bays.
  • Parents are NOT permitted to visit the faction bays, or stand near the faction bays under any circumstance, UNLESS requested by the faction teacher in case of an emergency. Please ensure your child has food and drink organised with them and is fully prepared so that you do not need to visit your child.
  • DOGS are not permitted on school grounds during the school day. (The Faction Carnival is a dog-free zone!)
  • Drinking alcohol and smoking are also not permitted on school grounds.

Interschool Athletics:

Please note new date changes for this year

Venue for this Year’s Carnival: Deanmore Primary School, Karrinyup, (both dates)

Important Dates:

Tuesday 11th September – Long Distance, Jumps and Throwing events – 9.30am – 12.30pm
Thursday 13th September – main Carnival – 10.00am – 2.30pm

Kind regards

Bunning Sausage Sizzle – Thank you

The P&C would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers for their time and efforts at the Bunnings sausage sizzle fundraiser on the 22nd of July. It was a pretty miserable day at times weather wise, but we still managed to get through most of the sausages. Final numbers are indicating a profit of $1400 which is outstanding for a winters day. Needless to say, we will work harder to secure a beautiful spring day next time.

We had a few funny moments with one volunteer (who shall remain nameless) turning up at the wrong Bunnings and working hard for almost 30 minutes before realising he was there supporting a random netball club rather than Newborough (thanks for eventually making it to Balcatta)! Dogs were pushed around in trolleys and bought sausage treats, a random crazy dude smashed a roll with 7 snags and onion. This was all topped off at 5pm by the entire two gazebos launching themselves into the air like hot air balloons, nearly taking off the head of a grandmother who refused to move out of the way until she squirted her quota of sauce. An amusing and eventful day overall. Thanks again to all involved and those who came down to show their support.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is at the link below:
