Principal’s Introduction

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break and ready to be back for what is always a busy term! This term we have the Faction carnival and interschool carnival which are great events. I know Ms Williams and the teachers are already working hard preparing the students for these events. It has been a great start to the term, the students and teacher have done a great job settling back into work quickly and the students have really embodied ‘The Newborough Way”.

This week Mr Worthy returns from his long service leave. He has been travelling around Europe with his family. I hope he had an amazing time; although, I am glad he is back! Ms Tucknott returns from her leave at the start of Week 3.

New staff

I would like to welcome our new staff to the school. Mrs Sue Blackwell has won the Year 5 Teaching position while Mrs Boulos takes a well-deserved break, taking Long Service Leave for the remainder of the year. Mrs Blackwell comes to us after teaching at Floreat Park Primary for the last few years.

We have also been very fortunate to be able to have Ms Marie Morrell on our staff. Ms Morrell comes to us from South Newman Primary School in the Pilbara region of WA. She brings a wealth of knowledge, especially in the ICT area. Ms Morrell will be working with the Year 1 and 3 teachers to support all students in these classes, as these classes have grown to be over the recommended class size prescribed by the Education Department.

We also have Ms Megan Saggers, who is taking Mrs Beatty’s class on Mondays while Mrs Beatty takes Long Service Leave and Ms Rachel Jones who has extended her role as Digital Technologies teacher, to the junior classes.

The Newborough Way – Challenge Yourself

We have a number of students who have achieved great success outside of school and we like to think of them as continually challenging themselves to strive to be their best. We want to acknowledge the success of the Coco Ozawa in Year 6. Coco will be attending the Future Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for Rhythmic Gymnastics this term. We wish her all the best for time in Canberra, we are sure she will wow them with her skills!

Also achieving in their chosen discipline is Sammy Stevens in Year 6 and two of our former students, Kerrie Tierney and Elissa Parin. All girls have been selected into the Diamond Regional Cadet Netball Program. It is a credit to the girls’ hard work and the work of everyone involved in the netball program.

See our ‘Community News’ for further information.

Thanks,
Nick Stenhouse
Principal

Administration News

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – from Week 7 onwards, cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Pottery News – Term 2

I think pottery “rocks”. It’s the same as play dough. You can make thumb pots. Put your thumbs inside both thumb pots. Stick them together and smooth the line with a pop stick. Make it into an animal.

Harper Yr2

I love pottery. Nothing was hard. Making things was so much fun.

Damon Yr1

Pottery is lots of fun. It always seems to end too quickly. I have been doing pottery every year since year 1. I love glazing our things we make.

Ava Yr5

I like pottery because I like doing the glazing.

Jasmine Yr1

It was very easy and fun.

Ella T and Eva Yr1

I think pottery is extremely fun because you can make all different shapes and sizes and my favourite part of pottery is glazing because I love experimenting with different colours and patterns. I love pottery!

Astha Yr4

Pottery is really fun because we get to create unique pots, animals, thongs and bowls. Once they have been in the kiln you get to glaze them in all different colours from red to aqua. We are shown how to create the clay objects first by Mrs Wimmer.

Canteen Survey - Complete to enter into Draw $50 Canteen Voucher

DO YOU VOLUNTEER IN THE CANTEEN? DO YOU WANT TO? ARE YOU TIRED OF RECEIVING EMAILS DESPERATELY SEEKING VOLUNTEERS?

The P&C is busily working on solutions to the ongoing difficulty in reliably filling the canteen roster so as to keep the canteen open and feed our hungry children. We are very grateful to those who volunteer their time, whether it is regular help or as a one-off.

To help us find workable solutions, we have developed a short survey to explore attitudes and behaviour around volunteering. We would love to hear from every family in the school (we only need one response per family), whether you use the canteen or not, whether you volunteer or not. Please tell us what you think!

You can click on the Canteen Survey link to complete the form, and it only takes about 2 minutes.

Here is the best part: EVERYONE WHO COMPLETES THE SURVEY CAN ENTER THE DRAW TO WIN A $50 CANTEEN VOUCHER! That equates to around a whole term of weekly orders for one child!

The prize will be drawn on Friday 3rd August, so all responses must be received no later than this date.

We look forward to hearing from your feedback!

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website via the link below.
