Principal’s Introduction

Newborough PS Netball

Last Saturday 16th June I was invited to watch the Newborough netball teams play at Matthews Netball Centre. On a beautiful crisp morning our first team to play were the Year Threes, starting at 7:45am. After some great passing Rosie scored the first goal. Then it was off to see the Year Fives who had the privilege of playing indoors. I saw this team last year and I marvelled at how much they had improved their passing and movement from end to end. From there to see the Year Four team. These girls have also improved, especially some clever goal shooting that really was the difference between them and their opponents. The next team were a group of Years Five and Six girls who are a new team this year with most of the team not having played before. From their skill and teamwork, you would not have known this. They played really well. My last team to see were the Year Six team. They played a very strong team who were very good. Our Year Sixes showed tremendous determination and great Newborough spirit. I was impressed with the way these girls persevered, never giving up.

Congratulations to all players, coaches and supporters. The Newborough Netball Club has a real sense of comradery and teamwork. The girls listen intently to their coaches and really enjoy playing as a team and club. Thank you to Alyson Stephens, head coach, for inviting me along and organising the schedule so I could see all the teams. On Monday I gave all the girls a ‘Goldie’ for their teamwork. I love to come along and see our students playing sports or participating in events so please let me know if you would like me to when I get back from my leave.

Newbie Nature Knights

Our Sustainability programs have almost ground to a halt this year with the departure of several influential teachers and so many other activities occurring. In anticipation of this and with a mindset to reorganise our Sustainability to be, excuse the play on words, more sustainable I was thrilled when a group of Year Three students approached me, wanting to get the recycling back up and running and maybe do some vegetable gardening. Here was an opportunity to re-start small and build up from a kid’s perspective rather than adults down. This was the basis for great success at Baldivis PS where I spent 10 fabulous years.

So from humble beginnings I met with Elsie, Izzy, Imani, Mitchell, Finn and Rosie through several lunchbreaks to brainstorm activities and get an idea of what the kids wanted to do. Essentially they want to save the planet from rubbish and grow and eat lots of vegetables.

So that is where we will start. The intent, of course, is to get this little group going and then spread our wings across the school. Having Year Threes as leaders allows them to drive sustainability for the next three and a half years. We would love parents and our extended school community to get involved. Already several parents have put their hand up.

One of the problems we discovered was that Sustainability doesn’t have a home at Newborough. We have lots of different types of recycle bins hidden away in various sheds, classrooms, near the canteen. Also gardening gear. Last week a teacher discovered a box of gardening gloves in a cupboard. To find a home, I have written an application for SUEZ grant, with the help of letters and drawings from all the Year Threes, to the value of $14 500, to cover the costs for a double garage shed with a large patio work area that would be located next to the school kitchen gardens. This would become the work centre and home for the school’s Sustainability team. The children have been working on a unique name and motto for the team and have come up with the “Newbie Nature Knights”.

Long Service Leave

As from Thursday 21st June I will be taking some long service leave. My daughter has been selected to undertake a study tour in Germany with her University so my wife and I will take the opportunity to visit some relations and see some sites in Holland, England and Greece. I return on Tuesday 24th July. (Week 2 Term 3)

Miss Tucknott will be Acting Principal for the first two weeks till the middle of the holidays and Mr Stenhouse will take over for the second two weeks till I return. Miss Tucknott will be taking two well deserved weeks’ leave for the start of Term 3.

Room 9 Foyer Access Closed until further notice

The foyer area outside Mrs Tennant’s classroom (Room 9) is closed to students and staff until further notice.

Arrangements have been made for Room 9 students to enter their classroom via Room 10, Mrs Warr’s class in the interim.

Recently a contractor fixing cupboards to the wall in the foyer area found dust behind the cupboards and testing has been undertaken. Asbestos has been identified in some of the dust and the rooms have been closed.

Over the weekend the area will be cleaned by qualified cleaners. Air monitoring will be undertaken before I will allow anyone in this area.

This morning I spoke with most parents from Mrs Tennant’s class as they dropped children off to class.

If you have any concerns or issues please do not hesitate to contact Miss Tucknott and Mr Stenhouse in my absence, as I am about to take leave for four weeks starting later today.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Stranger Danger

We are writing to inform parents and carers about a reported incident in our local community yesterday.

During school, a man entered school grounds and appeared to be acting suspiciously. He was quickly approached by a teacher and left the premises. The matter has been reported to WA Police and should be regarded as unsubstantiated until further advice is received.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. You can also call 13 14 44 to report an incident to WA Police (only use 000 in an emergency).

In light of this reported incident I urge all children to take care when going to and from school, and to report anything suspicious to their parents, the school and the police.

Here are some suggestions to help your children stay safe:

  • always travel in a group
  • walk on the right hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic
  • wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway
  • stay in areas that are well lit
  • stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres)
  • be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably
  • if you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number
  • if a passing car stops nearby, never get too close
  • run from a situation if you feel at risk
  • give this advice to your brothers and sisters, especially if they are younger
  • report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school and the police
  • if you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car
  • report numbers plates of cars and the clothing or distinguishing features of individuals to police.

To get the latest community safety information from police, visit WA Police on Facebook via the link below or online at their website below.

Administration News

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – from Week 7 onwards, cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Deputy News

Reporting to Parents:

Towards the end of the term, parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades.

Components of written reports

At Newborough Primary School, we follow the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy Guidelines set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for the accurate reporting of the Western Australian Curriculum. In turn, we have developed our own Curriculum, Assessing and Reporting Policy which can be found on our website.

In the policy, it will outline some of the components of the written report which states that all schools are to provide plain language reports to parents/carers at the end of each semester which:

  1. are readily understandable to those responsible for the student
  2. give an accurate and objective assessment of the student's progress and achievement
  3. include an assessment of the student's achievement in terms of the Western Australian achievement standards
  4. include, for subjects studied, an assessment of the student's achievement:
  5. in terms of the grades A, B, C, D and E (or an equivalent five-point scale/achievement descriptor), clearly defined in terms of Western Australian achievement standards, and
in relation to the performance of the student's peer group.
  6. include information about the student's attitude, behaviour and effort in terms other than the five-point scale which is used as a measure of achievement
  7. include any additional information the school considers relevant, including an overall teacher comment.

In addition, for Pre-primary to Year 2, school reports are to include a description of the student's progress in personal and social learning.

Mid-year reporting – Some important information!

The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.

The grades allocated by teachers’ mid-year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in the previous year, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement the next year. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.

If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.

Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2018

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Monday 25th June 2018. (Week 9, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Humphrey’s Social Dance – Change to After School Social Dance

Humphrey’s Social Dance lessons are now in full swing and students have been having a great time. We again thank parents for their support with this program.

Please note we have made a change to the after school dance socials to in-school Dance Parties instead to help alleviate the sometimes overcrowding we get in the undercover area with social activities such as these.

Parents and toddlers are more than welcome to attend your child’s Dance Party during their allocated hour.

Good Standing: End of Semester 1 Gold and Silver Certificates

As we gear up for the end of Semester One, the Administration has been looking closely at the behaviour records of students being referred to the office for behaviour indiscretions. In line with our Behaviour Management Policy, students at the end of the term will be rewarded with either a Gold Good Standing certificate, a Silver Good Standing Certificate or no certificate if they have been referred to the administration on two or more Fast Tracks.

The implementation of the PBS Values of Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself has been a wonderful framework to provide staff, students and the community with a Behaviour Matrix that will help to continue to direct and shape student growth and behaviours.

Staff are working hard on reinforcing these positive behaviours throughout the whole school and refer back to the matrix to guide students and redirect students. In analysing the poor behaviours students are most commonly referred to the office for, these behaviours relate to the PBS value of Respect. While most students are working on behaving “The Newborough Way” most of the time, there are times where a few students have chosen not to show respect to their teachers, relief teachers, other students and in areas such as toilets and the verandah. In some case this means that the student’s negative behaviour choice stops others from learning and the teacher from teaching.

Below is what we are aiming for, and expect, Respect to look like at Newborough Primary School. We encourage parents to discuss this with their children.

School Banking – Wednesdays

Thank you to everyone who entered the Colouring In Competition! I loved looking at all the amazing pictures and thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's savings goals. From 'a bag of lollies' and the ever-popular 'Beyblades' to 'my first car' - the answers were priceless. I hope this simple exercise helped remind our kids that we all have to save for the things we want!

The winners were drawn at last Friday's assembly by Denise from CBA and her offsider, Sven - the Skaterboy. Congratulations to Muse from Year 3 who collected the first prize, Scarlett from Year 1 who received second and Renee from Year 3 who scored our third prize.

We also rewarded 8 school bankers who achieved a Bronze certificate for banking 10 (or more) times so far this year. Congratulations to Noah Blakeney, Max Draper, Jasmine Biddle, Sophie Johansen, Natalia Lopes, Rafael Lopes, Ava Lopresti and Lila Lopresti. In addition to our bronze certificates, there are silver (20), gold (30) and emerald (40) certificates which I will distribute throughout the year as the milestones are reached. School banking is all about rewarding regular savings - it doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit, it’s the habit of saving that is most important.

Thank you again to everyone who joined in. See you before school next Wednesday morning in the library!

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is listed below.
