Principal’s Introduction

Newborough Annual Report 2017

The Newborough PS 2017 Annual Report has now been completed and can be found on the School website and on the Department website for Newborough. Several printed copies are placed in the front office for those interested.

Extra Classroom Resourcing

As a result of the school’s decision to go with straight classes in all year levels, several classes, particularly in the junior years, have ended up at or above recommended class size. Teachers were happy to run with the straight classes approach with the proviso that we put as much extra support in the bigger classes. This we did. With increased enrolments some of these classes have blown out to a point teachers have found difficult.

Given this, I put forward a submission to the Department for some above formula funding for an extra teacher. I am very pleased to advise that we were successful in gaining the equivilent of an extra teacher for the remainder of the year. We will not be restructuring classes, rather providing opportunities for students so they can remain in their home rooms. This means established relationships with teachers and peers can remain in tact.I will be working to ensure we get the best quality teacher and look at the best arrangements for students. We are in the planning phase and hope to have arrangements established as soon as possible.

Netball Success – 2018 Smarter Than Smoking Netball Associations

Last weekend the WA Netball Association held its annual junior championships with teams from all over the state and even as far away as Singapore. The Newborough Netball Team was very well represented with current and former players representing the Perth Netball Association in various grades. Sammy Stephens played in Division 2, the highest level for our girls, with her team finishing sixth and former student Kerrie Tierney in Division 4 finishing third having lost by one point to each of the grand final teams. Haley Dallin and Elissa Parrin, also former students, also played in different divisions.

The Perth Netball Association Under 12 team number 4 included current Year Six students Stella McQuire and Molly Allen along with last years’ Head Girl Neve Gaunt. Over the three days they played seven games, winning them all to reach the grand final. This game was a nail biter with our team prevailing by two points and coming away with the trophy. Congratulations and well done girls and thank you to all the parents who supported the teams.

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Administration News

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Deputy News

Reporting to Parents:

Towards the end of the term, parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades.

Components of written reports

At Newborough Primary School, we follow the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy Guidelines set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for the accurate reporting of the Western Australian Curriculum. In turn, we have developed our own Curriculum, Assessing and Reporting Policy which can be found on our website.

In the policy, it will outline some of the components of the written report which states that all schools are to provide plain language reports to parents/carers at the end of each semester which:

(a) are readily understandable to those responsible for the student
(b) give an accurate and objective assessment of the student's progress and achievement
(c) include an assessment of the student's achievement in terms of the Western Australian achievement standards
(d) include, for subjects studied, an assessment of the student's achievement:
(i) in terms of the grades A, B, C, D and E (or an equivalent five-point scale/achievement descriptor), clearly defined in terms of Western Australian achievement standards, and
(ii)in relation to the performance of the student's peer group.
(e)include information about the student's attitude, behaviour and effort in terms other than the five-point scale which is used as a measure of achievement
(f) include any additional information the school considers relevant, including an overall teacher comment.

In addition, for Pre-primary to Year 2, school reports are to include a description of the student's progress in personal and social learning.

Mid-year reporting – Some important information!

The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.

The grades allocated by teachers’ mid-year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in the previous year, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement the next year. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.

If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.

Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2018

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Monday 25th June 2018. (Week 9, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Humphrey’s Social Dance – Change to After School Social Dance

Humphrey’s Social Dance lessons are now in full swing and students have been having a great time. We again thank parents for their support with this program.

Please note we have made a change to the after school dance socials to in-school Dance Parties instead to help alleviate the sometimes overcrowding we get in the undercover area with social activities such as these.

Parents and toddlers are more than welcome to attend your child’s Dance Party during their allocated hour.

Good Standing: End of Semester 1 Gold and Silver Certificates

As we gear up for the end of Semester One, the Administration has been looking closely at the behaviour records of students being referred to the office for behaviour indiscretions. In line with our Behaviour Management Policy, students at the end of the term will be rewarded with either a Gold Good Standing certificate, a Silver Good Standing Certificate or no certificate if they have been referred to the administration on two or more Fast Tracks.

The implementation of the PBS Values of Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself has been a wonderful framework to provide staff, students and the community with a Behaviour Matrix that will help to continue to direct and shape student growth and behaviours.

Staff are working hard on reinforcing these positive behaviours throughout the whole school and refer back to the matrix to guide students and redirect students. In analysing the poor behaviours students are most commonly referred to the office for, these behaviours relate to the PBS value of Respect. While most students are working on behaving “The Newborough Way” most of the time, there are times where a few students have chosen not to show respect to their teachers, relief teachers, other students and in areas such as toilets and the verandah. In some case this means that the student’s negative behaviour choice stops others from learning and the teacher from teaching.

Below is what we are aiming for, and expect, Respect to look like at Newborough Primary School. We encourage parents to discuss this with their children.

P&C News

President News

Dear parents and students:

A big thankyou to everyone who was able to come to the busy bee on Saturday the 19th. We had a great day; The nature plaground was fixed, mulch was spread, the shed was emptied, the basketball rings were fixed and plenty of surfaces were painted. The kids played in the sun and then helped polish off excess stock from the canteen.

The resurfacing of the quadrangle is now complete and the kids are once again playing their games on it. The area looks really fantastic and it has certainly enhanced our school. Due to the hard work of many past and present parents the P&C was able to make a substantial contribution to these works and the entire school is very grateful for your efforts.

Our last meeting was held on the 14th and we started to plan some events for later in the year. Some important dates to remember are;

Monday 18th June Week 8 - P&C Meeting in the Library 7pm
Sunday 22nd July - Bunnings BBQ Balcatta

All are welcome, join in as you can.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is listed below.
