Principal’s Introduction

Vale Mr Joe Dellaposta

We were all deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Joe Dellaposta who was Principal of Newborough Primary School from mid-2011 till April 2015. I was advised by the North Metropolitan Regional Office on Monday before firstly informing staff and then parents and finally students. In part this timeline was to ensure we were best positioned to inform and support our students in the first instance and then us as adults. At the time of writing I do not have any further information about Mr Dellapostas’ passing or funeral arrangements. I have passed on the school’s condolences and thoughts to the Lockridge Primary School community where Mr Dellaposta moved from his time here at Newborough. When appropriate this will also be extended to his family.

Many students, staff and community members have fond memories of a very dedicated, hard working Principal whose passion for education shone through in his work at Newborough. His legacy is a strong and vibrant student-centred school, something I greatly appreciated during our brief handover period as the school moved from a level 4 to a level 5 school. I found him to be very empathetic and understanding, qualities staff and parents continue to mention.

Mr Dellaposta generated a new vision for our school as he embarked on and embraced the opportunity to become an Independent Public School.

In achieving this prestigious milestone Mr Dellaposta harnessed an already strong and supportive community in building the governance structures including the School Board and overseeing the school’s first Business Plan 2015-2017. This plan highlighted a focus on implementation of the new WA Curriculum and the explicit teaching methodology that has made such a positive impact on teaching and learning for every child. Mr Dellaposta was a very erudite scholar who was a deep thinker. He gave tirelessly to this school. He set up Peer Mentoring and took a keen interest in developing student leadership. Something we continue to grow and develop. Many will remember after school sports and his keen interest in cricket and football. He loved the Eagles.

Mr Dellaposta also embraced the ongoing progress of the teaching profession hosting Notre Dame teaching practice students as their Head of Practice. We are most thankful and grateful for his leadership and influence.

A basket has been set up in the front office for those who wish to express their condolences. These messages will be forwarded to his family. We will put a notice in the West Australian on behalf of the school community following any family notice.

I encourage students, staff and parents to support each other sharing positive messages. Finding a little time to talk, to listen and grieve is very important. We all do this in slightly different ways and at different times. As I mentioned in my email keeping a focus on learning and regular activities is important. The Administration team, including deputies and myself are here to listen and support. Teachers welcome this as well but ask that instruction time not be interrupted. Our wonderful Chaplain, Ali Dee is at school each Tuesday and Friday and our School Psych Rita Burgess on Tuesdays and are very approachable. This is a really good time for our values of Respect, Kindness, Teamwork and Challenge Yourself to shine through in the Newborough Way. Keep an eye on each other.

Vale Mr Joe Dellaposta. You are greatly missed but leave great memories and a strong legacy.

Busy Bee

Last Saturday the P&C organised a fantastic Busy Bee with many helpers doing a variety of jobs around the school. The canteen foyer was high pressure cleaned and given a lick of paint, the Nature Playground repaired, tidied up and new mulch spread around, the shed cleaned out and rubbish removed to the tip and old seats from the quadrangle painted. Many thanks to Jacque Stott, Ben Rendalls, and Wes Gregory who were the main organisers. Over the day many parents dropped in to help. As a result of everyone’s labour the Nature Playground is now fully operational, the canteen foyer is so much brighter, cleaner, welcoming and there is room to store our stuff. Great job P&C.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Administration News

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – from Week 7 onwards, cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Deputy News

Reporting to Parents:

Towards the end of the term, parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades.

Components of written reports

At Newborough Primary School, we follow the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy Guidelines set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for the accurate reporting of the Western Australian Curriculum. In turn, we have developed our own Curriculum, Assessing and Reporting Policy which can be found on our website.

In the policy, it will outline some of the components of the written report which states that all schools are to provide plain language reports to parents/carers at the end of each semester which:

(a) are readily understandable to those responsible for the student
(b) give an accurate and objective assessment of the student's progress and achievement
(c) include an assessment of the student's achievement in terms of the Western Australian achievement standards
(d) include, for subjects studied, an assessment of the student's achievement:
(i) in terms of the grades A, B, C, D and E (or an equivalent five-point scale/achievement descriptor), clearly defined in terms of Western Australian achievement standards, and
(ii)in relation to the performance of the student's peer group.
(e)include information about the student's attitude, behaviour and effort in terms other than the five-point scale which is used as a measure of achievement
(f) include any additional information the school considers relevant, including an overall teacher comment.

In addition, for Pre-primary to Year 2, school reports are to include a description of the student's progress in personal and social learning.

Mid-year reporting – Some important information!

The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.

The grades allocated by teachers mid-year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in the previous year, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement the next year. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.

If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.

Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2018

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Monday 25th June 2018. (Week 9, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and

parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Humphrey’s Social Dance – Starts this week!

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in social dance classes from Weeks 4 -9 this term. Together with the obvious fitness and co-ordination gained from learning to dance, this wonderful program is something from which all students will benefit. Dancing encourages appropriate social interaction, respect, co-operation, poise and social grace and of course rhythm and creativity.

The main emphasis in the social dance program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture.

The cost of the program is $30 per student with a maximum of $60 for two children or more in one family. Please see Newborough Primary School administration immediately if you have not paid by now or organised a payment plan as your child/children will not be able to participate. And that would be sad!

A reminder please that Newborough Primary School is now a ‘Cashless’ school. Please see Sharon Singleton for any matters in regards to payment plans.

Kind regards
Karen Tucknott
Deputy Principal

P&C News

President News

Dear parents and students:

A big thankyou to everyone who was able to comer to the busy bee on Saturday the 19th. We had a great day; The nature play was fixed, mulch was spread, the shed was emptied, the basketball rings were fixed and plenty of surfaces were painted. The kids played in the sun and then helped polish off excess stock from the canteen.

The resurfacing of the quadrangle is now complete and the kids are once again playing their games on it. The area looks really fantastic and it has certainly enhanced our school. Due to the hard work of many past and present parents the P&C was able to make a substantial contribution to these works and the entire school is very grateful for your efforts.

Our last meeting was held on the 14th and we started to plan some events for later in the year. Some important dates to remember are;

Monday 18th June Week 8 - P&C Meeting in the Library 7pm
Sunday 22nd July - Bunnings BBQ Balcatta

All are welcome, join in as you can.

COLOURING IN COMPETITION

Soon your child will receive their colouring in sheet for this year’s School Banking Colouring In Competition. Thanks to the CBA, the winners will share $20 to go towards their savings goal plus a basket of goodies from the Commonwealth Bank. Completed entries can be dropped off at the library during school banking – Wednesday mornings 8:10am to 8:40am. The competition is open to all ages and the kids can enter as many times as they like. In fact, there are three different colouring in sheets to complete (feel free to download and print then using the links below.)

The competition closes on June 13 and the prizes will be drawn at the school assembly on Friday June 15. I can’t wait to see the kids creations (which we’ll also display in the library during the competition).

Good luck to all our fantastic savers and budding artists!

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below:
