Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back Term 2

It was terrific to come back to school and see everyone bright and bubbly, refreshed and keen to go. A warm welcome to our new families and staff. We trust you have a long and beneficial time at NPS as you settle in nice and quickly to the Newborough Way.

Welcome to Mrs Alida Beck – (0.4 FTE) teaching Digital Technologies (DT) Yrs. 1 & 2 Mondays and DT & Writing on Wednesdays, Ms Rachael Jones – (0.1 FTE) Wednesday DT Year 6, Ms Vanessa Adamson (1.0 FTE) Kindy Education Assistant ( EA replacing Mrs Ashley Cross), Ms Leah Pickering (0.8 FTE) Special Needs EA Mon & Wed Rm 8 (Miss Lane’s class) & Tues & Thurs Kindy (Mrs Thornett’s Red group), Ms Amanda Chisolm – (0.9 FTE) Special Needs EA Rm 4 Pre-primary (Miss Ahren’s class), Ms Julie Berti – Mainstream Pre-primary EA Rm 3 (Mrs Beatty’s class) Thurs-Fri, Notre Dame trainee teachers completing their School Experience 1 Practice – Miss Tia Badwi in Miss Kos’ Year 4 class and Miss Frances White in Mrs Boulos’ Year 5 class and Ms Penny Fraser – Canteen Manager Mon, Wed & Frid.

We also say a fond farewell and goodbye, at least for a while to Mrs Kelly Hughes, Mrs Ashley Cross and Ms Ros Plummer.

Thank you to staff whom gave their time and came in or did work on the holidays that is really appreciated and a demonstration of your commitment to the school.

Whilst it is a bit disappointing our new quadrangle wasn’t completed because of weather it has been fascinating and interesting to see how the work is being done. Thank you to students, parents and staff for your support with the changes we have had to make to get around the school. It is good to see people accept a challenge rather than a chore. You may have noticed the new painted murals around the school that were completed during the break. They look tremendous, adding to the visuals promoting our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) program.

On the Monday prior to children returning staff attended several informative workshops as we prepared for term two.

Congratulations to both Mrs Ashley Cross and husband Rob who announced the safe arrival of little Harper Marie Cross on Thursday 12th April and to Mrs Kelly Hughes and husband Rowan who have also announced the safe arrival of little Reed George Hughes on 29th April.

ANZAC Service

Well done to all involved in the preparation, organisation and performances for our ANZAC Service. Again this year Mrs Morgan made up the wreaths and included beautiful Banksias, the schools emblem. Following the service Mrs Singleton took the wreaths to the memorial at Charles Riley Memorial in North Beach with an acknowledgement from the school so that others could appreciate the school’s thoughts and efforts. The school received lots of great feedback from participants about the quality of the service and involvement of the students. Mr Richard Goodwin, grandparent of Stella and Riley Freeman sent through some fantastic photos. Mrs Liza Harvey, Member for Scarborough and our School Board, also did a really lovely write up on her Facebook page with some great photos ( To view page click herelink to her page click on here).

Quadrangle Resurfacing Update

Wasn’t it fascinating to see the transformation so far to our quadrangle? The works have been a little slower than anticipated and what we were hoping for.

The delays have been primarily because of the weather and that we had unwanted visitors who ignored the fencing and signage and came in after school playing basketball and riding bikes. We even had a parents come in and use the courts during the holidays when there was clearly a fence stopping people.

The paintwork needed to be repaired costing further time. The painter is hopeful that he can finish by Wednesday week 2 if there are no further delays. It will take a couple more days to really set before we can open it up for use. Thank you everyone for your cooperation and assistance with the changes we had to make moving around the school.

Emergency Drill

Last Thursday the school held an Emergency Drill that helps ensure staff and students understand what to do and how to respond if there is an emergency at school. Each room, including classrooms, have an updated Emergency Procedure chart detailing our expected response. Ms Williams, the school’s Occupational Health and Safety Officer, observed the drill and provided feedback complimenting the school on our response and made a few suggestions to fine tune our procedures. Whilst we didn’t practice our Lockdown response this was highlighted to all assembled on the school oval. Fingers crossed we only need to practice these responses. Thank you to all staff, in particular the office ladies who helped prepare documentation and update student and staff information.

State Gymnastics Champions

Congratulations to Coco Ozawa and Ashleigh Mackenzie who have been selected to represent Western Australia at the 2018 Australian Gymnastics Championships at Hisense Arena, Melbourne Victoria from 29th – 3rd June. Coco did very well at the recent State Championships and her main area of expertise is the Rhythmic Gymnastics. Ashleigh was selected in the same team for Artistic Gymnastics. We wish both girls every success and an enjoyable trip.

Before and After School Play Procedures

After considerable consultation I have formalised our Before and After School Play procedures that commence immediately. Please read the Preamble and guidelines carefully.

Happy Mother’s Day

Wishing all our Mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day this Sunday 13th May.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Administration News

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – from Week 7 onwards, cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Deputy News

Reporting to Parents:

Towards the end of the term, parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades.

Components of written reports

At Newborough Primary School, we follow theCurriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy Guidelines set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for the accurate reporting of the Western Australian Curriculum. In turn, we have developed our own Curriculum, Assessing and Reporting Policy which can be found on our website.

In the policy, it will outline some of the components of the written report which states that all schools are to provide plain language reports to parents/carers at the end of each semester which:

  • are readily understandable to those responsible for the student
  • give an accurate and objective assessment of the student's progress and achievement
  • include an assessment of the student's achievement in terms of the Western Australian achievement standards
  • include, for subjects studied, an assessment of the student's achievement:
    - in terms of the grades A, B, C, D and E (or an equivalent five-point scale/achievement descriptor), clearly defined in terms of Western Australian achievement standards, and
    - in relation to the performance of the student's peer group.
  • include information about the student's attitude, behaviour and effort in terms other than the five-point scale which is used as a measure of achievement
  • include any additional information the school considers relevant, including an overall teacher comment.

In addition, for Pre-primary to Year 2, school reports are to include a description of the student's progress in personal and social learning.

Mid-year reporting – Some important information!

The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.

The grades allocated by teachers mid-year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in the previous year, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement the next year. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.

If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.

Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2018

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Monday 25th June 2018. (Week 9, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Humphrey’s Social Dance – Starts Week 4

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in social dance classes from Weeks 4 -9 this term. Together with the obvious fitness and co-ordination gained from learning to dance, this wonderful program is something from which all students will benefit. Dancing encourages appropriate social interaction, respect, co-operation, poise and social grace and of course rhythm and creativity.

The main emphasis in the social dance program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture.

The cost of the program is $30 per student with a maximum of $60 for two children or more in one family. Payment must be received, and cleared, by Wednesday 16th May 2018 in order for students to be able to participate in the dance lessons.

A reminder please that Newborough Primary School is now a ‘Cashless’ school. Please see Sharon Singleton for any matters in regards to payment plans.

ANZAC SERVICE PERFORMANCE

Our Junior and Senior Choirs performed at the Anzac Service on Friday, 13th April.

A massive congratulations to each choir member for the professional and respectful manner in which they conducted themselves – you sang beautifully!

Thank you Mr Hewitt and Ms Shigematsu for your beautiful accompaniment on the piano.

TERM 2 CHOIR CONCERT

Our next performance is scheduled in NAIDOC week: Thursday 28th June at 2pm. We have made a good start with rehearsals in week 1 and it is really important that all choir members keep up the excellent attendance from last term. We have 8 weeks to learn 4 new songs to add to our repertoire!

Chaplain News

I have a lovely story to share with you. At the end of last term we had a very successful “Newborough Cares” week. The generosity of people in our community was evident in all the food that people shared. There was even a gift card given towards food from a community member who had heard about the event and wanted to contribute

As a result of this generous bounty we have been able to share with another school that is constantly trying to source food hampers for families that are struggling within their school community. In the last week of term Jody Rynski, Chaplain at Nollamara Primary School, came and received some food from our school community that she will then be able to put in to food hampers. Her response to this offer was… “Yay!!! We have had lots of requests for hampers in the last month, so will be perfect- in time for school holidays!!”

Thanks so much for your contributions to our community and to demonstrating our values of kindness and team work. I do hope that these events give opportunity in your family for chats about generosity and looking after others.

Newborough School Canteen Now Open For Term 2

Hi there, I would like to introduce myself to all the Newborough Primary School Community. My name is Penny Fraser and I have joined the team at Newborough Primary School as your Canteen Manager. I have worked for the past 4 years at Lake Gwelup Primary School in their canteen where my two girls still attend the school and I am excited to take on this new challenge to create a canteen and menu that the children will enjoy and that hopefully, you as the parents, will support. I am keen to get input from the school community to better understand how I can match your needs and expectations for your children’s nutritional requirements at lunch times. I am open to all suggestions as to how we can collectively create a menu that works for your children and matches the budget expectations of both the families and the school.

In the coming weeks I will be trialling some new over the counter snacks and tweaking the menu for you all to try and would love to know how they have been received.

I am free to be contacted at any time during school hours and love to meet and chat to new people and receive feedback. I see this as a journey that we are all on together for the long haul and that as I get to know each of you and your children that we can form strong bonds that add to the school spirit.

Thank you for the positive feedback and welcome I have received so far and so look forward to working with you all in the coming weeks.

School Banking – Wednesdays

TWO NEW REWARDS PLUS THERE’S A HOLIDAY TO BE WON!

One of the great things about school banking is that it’s designed to reward regular savers. It doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit – it’s more important to make saving a regular part of their weekly routine. This term there are two new rewards – the Glow Light and Glitter Pens. Don’t forget it only takes 10 tokens to earn a reward. Oh, and did I mention there’s also a family holiday to HAWAII to be won? Every child who makes 15 deposits before the end of next term is automatically entered in the draw. The prize also includes $2,000 spending money. Aloha baby!

Banking day is EVERY WEDNESDAY. So get your kids signed up for a Commonwealth Bank Youth Saver Account at Innaloo or Karrinyup Branch (or you can do it online in the link below) And come and see Sophie & I next Wednesday in the library between 8:10 and 8:40.

See you soon!

PS – If you didn’t already know, the CBA School Banking program is also a fundraiser for the school. We receive a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution based on the number of kids who made at least one deposit in the previous year. So far we’ve raised $110 through School Banking this year and I’m hoping that’s just the beginning!

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is in the link below.
