Principal’s Introduction

What a Term!

Term One has been action packed with so many fantastic activities as well as setting up a great year for learning. Here is a quick reflection:

Straight classes across the school, welcoming new students and their families and new staff, the introduction of our Newborough Way Positive Behaviour Support program with Class Passes and Golden Time, swimming training and two fabulous carnivals, new student leaders and faction leaders, school photos, Year Six camp at Point Peron, student leaders’ luncheon at WA Parliament House, Harmony Day, class assemblies by Miss Kos and Mrs Farmer and Mrs Wimmer’s Year Fours, Shoji Japanese students, a new P&C team led by President Wes Gregory, the Easter Raffle and two Round Table Luncheons with Pre-Primary and Year Sixes including our Japanese visitors. We still have a few days before a well-earned break and in that time we have Ride2School day on Thursday and our ANZAC Service on Friday.

There are lots to look forward to in a shortened Term Two (9 weeks) that commences on Tuesday 1st May for students. Monday 30th April is a School Development Day (Pupil free) for staff. If all goes to plan, we will have a revitalised and functional quadrangle that will look great and be so much safer. Have a safe, restful and enjoyable term break.

PBS ‘Weekly Planner’

The Positive Behaviour Committee are seeking families to trial a home planning process that complements our Positive Behaviour structures at home and school. Ideally we would like a cross representation from early childhood to upper primary, not necessarily from just one family. The trial will commence at the start of term two and go for three weeks. We will ask for feedback and then fine tune before presenting to the school. If you are interested in being involved in the trial email me with the names, age and classes of your children.
John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au

Key Principles for the Home Planner are:

  • Based on the behavioural values we use at school – Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself
  • Negotiation of jobs, homework, activities and rewards between parent(s) and student at the start of the week
  • Includes jobs, homework and activities (e.g. sports, TV, friend visits, computer, etc.)
  • Placed in a visible location such as on the fridge for easy access and for accountability that as an agreement is signed off by parent(s) and student

The weekly planner may look quite different for each child and vary over time. For example making the bed and cleaning teeth may be simply part of daily routine but to get this habit formed it might be something to include for a period of time to start off with.

The idea of rewards is that they are simple, negotiated, inexpensive (best if there is no cost) and achievable. We use goldies and set a class target (Teamwork) of 300 class goldies to gain a ‘Class Pass’ and negotiated class reward. When all classes have achieved their class pass the whole school is rewarded with ‘Golden Time’ that is an extra afternoon recess. A family could use ticks or the like on the chart instead of goldies and have an individual target for each child and maybe even extend to a family reward.

We are working with a potential sponsor to provide the planner in a format such as a whiteboard that can be cleared and reused each week or weekly tear off sheet. It is intended to produce a brochure and put a video clip on the school website to assist parents and students with the effective use of the planner.

I have provided a blank ‘draft’ weekly and planner and one I mocked up as an example of how it could look. What do you think?

Mental Health Program

I am very pleased to advise that our school has been selected to receive special funding to support the delivery of mental health programs to help students become increasingly confident, resilient and ready for the challenges and opportunities for their futures.

This is very exciting and will complement our Chapliancy program, Health Curriculum and our Postive Behaviour Support program (The Newborough Way). Our school will receive $11 096 via Targeted Initiative funding for each of the next four years to be used to support mental health programs. This funding is additional Level 3 teacher time that includes teacher training and identification and planning for selected program implementation. Ms Danker, Year 3 Room 6, is our allocated Level 3 teacher. During the training this year Ms Danker will view a range of programs such as KidsMatter, Friends Resilience, Friendly Schools Plus, PATHS(Promoting Alternative and others) before determining which program is most suited to Newborough.

It is anticipated the selected program will commence in 2019 across the school.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Teamwork is rowing the boat with all oars going the same way at the same time. A boat doesn’t go forward if each one is rowing their own way”

Access To School During The Holidays

Please remember that, as the quadrangle is being upgraded and external murals on various buildings being painted, there will be no access to the school during the school holidays. The area will be fenced off and we ask that parents and children respect the workmen and the boundaries that will be on site during this time for their own safety and to ensure the renovations and upgrades are completed in time for next term.

Administration News

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – from Week 7 onwards, cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

HARMONY DAY – Wednesday 21st March 2018: Racism No Way!

Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Held every year on 21st March, Harmony Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.

At Newborough Primary School, all classes participated in a range of activities in the classroom to recognise and promote all cultures within our school through our values of Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself.

We had a range of cultural dress and all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 made a little mini-me cut out of themselves in class to make a whole school display on the lawn near the senior playground. It looked fantastic and celebrated our diversity and inclusivity.

Congratulations to everyone on their participation in the day.

ANZAC SERVICE

Newborough Primary School will be holding our ANZAC Service on Friday 13th April at 8.40am on the quadrangle. We extend an invitation to all parents, grandparents, servicemen and women and community members to attend.

As this is a commemorative service, we ask that you do not clap during the service and supervise all small children during the assembly. Small children are not allowed to play on the play equipment during this time. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Term 2 – Looking ahead: Social Dance Classes by Humphreys Dance Studio

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in Social dance classes from Weeks 4 -9. Together with the obvious fitness and co-ordination gained from learning to dance, this wonderful program is something from which all students will benefit. Dancing encourages appropriate social interaction, respect, co-operation, poise and social grace and of course rhythm and creativity.

The main emphasis in the social dance program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture.

The Incursion Advice notes went home just after Easter outlining costs. A reminder please that Newborough Primary School is now a ‘Cashless’ school. Please see Sharon Singleton for any matters in regards to payment plans.

Interschool Swimming Carnival

Last Friday, our team of 46 swimmers from Years 4 – 6 travelled to Greenwood College for our annual Interschool Swimming Carnival to compete against students from the Central Coastal District comprising of Glengarry, Duncraig, Hillarys and Newborough Primary Schools.

With magnificent warm Autumn weather, our students participated in the most closely contested carnival that I have ever experienced, which saw multiple lead changes and many drawn events with the final scores having only 34 points separating 1st placed Duncraig and 4th placed Hillarys Primary Schools.

Our school Captains, Sammy Stephens and Luca Otake as well as our Vice Captains of Mia Dunn and Ben Prance led superbly demonstrating excellent leadership skills as did all the other children who willingly assisted their teachers in the bay when the leaders where swimming.

All of the children were wonderfully behaved and demonstrated excellent team spirit and sportsmanship and were superb ambassadors representing the school demonstrating the ‘Newborough Way’ of respect, kindness, team work and challenging themselves.

Our team participated with great endeavour in all events against much improved swimmers from all the other schools. Congratulations to Duncraig who last year finished in 3rd place and demonstrated how training for a carnival can greatly enhance your individual and team’s outcome. Our team once again finished in second place only 13 points behind Duncraig and only 4 points in front of Glengarry.

Hillarys also showed a great improvement in their swimming skills and finished only 17 points behind Glengarry in 4th place. We would like to sincerely congratulate all of the competitors selected for their outstanding efforts. Well done boys and girls on your fabulous efforts, sportsmanship and team work throughout the carnival.

There are always many people to thank for helping to get our swimming team prepared for the carnival. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered and assisted with the many jobs at the carnival. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by all of the staff, parents and students from each of the schools participating.

Thank you to our wonderful parents for your ongoing support and assistance with the after school training sessions and the many staff members who also gave up their time to assist at training.

Thank you Mr Worthy and Mr Blanch for your assistance at the carnival and to all of the parents and friends who came along to support their children. A fantastic effort once again Newborough!

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team please see Mrs Tennant in Room 9 or email vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au. It might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time!

Chaplain News

A big thank you to everyone that donated food and gift cards during our recent Newborough Cares week. I was overwhelmed by the response. The cupboard is no longer bare!

I hope that this event gave you opportunity in your family to talk about generosity and giving to others. Showing Kindness as fits with our school values as part of the Newborough Way.

As I had mentioned before this food will be both for our school community and for the broader community. I am excited to be able to share some of our bounty with a school that is in great need all the time. I will share more information about that next term.

Thanks again

Pottery News – Term 1, 2018

I love pottery because it’s so much fun making everything and in the end it looks so pretty and it makes a good collection in your house hold. I just love it and in the end you get to glaze it. It is so much fun painting the glaze when you can use all the different colours. And that’s the reason I love pottery.

Grace Yr 4

What I like about pottery- They are delicate, the clay is squishy and soft. After it is glazed it will be pretty and my one is very colourful and it will be shiny. Glazing is fun. After it is gorgeous.

Scilla Yr 1

Pottery is fun. All the hard work pays off. The hardest bit was the spirals on the pots. Glazing was fun and you get to take it home. Your hands do get dirty but there are sinks!

Beau Yr 4

Pottery is really enjoyable. I love when we get to take our amazing creations home and playing around with clay and glazing them is so much fun. Pottery is creative and an exciting thing that all kids should try.

Josie Yr 4

I love pottery because you can make anything out of clay. And it is fun to do with friends.

Muse Yr 3

I love pottery and it is fun and it was a little bit hard.

Ashlyn Yr 1

I love pottery and making the animals.

Kaizen Yr 1

I like the glazing and the clay is very delicate. It is fun. It makes me happy.

P&C News

Dear parents and students,

We do hope that Easter was a peaceful time for you and your family.

Many of you may be aware that the Year 6 students were on camp earlier in the year at the Point Peron Camp School. Our school uses this facility each year and once again the camp was a great success. Unfortunately, the State Government, who are the owners and operators of the facility, plan to close the Camp School as part of their cost saving drive. This would be a big blow to our school, not least because of the fact that we have many years of history at Point Peron, but also because it will be challenging to find a similar cost effective facility.

As such the P&C will be writing to the Minister concerned, urging them to reconsider. We will also be organising a petition. Sheets will be available for signing at classroom doors soon. Please find time to support this measure as it is something that will affect all the children.

The Easter raffle was lots of fun for the kids again this year, many thanks go to those who helped organise it, and remember ride to school day is coming up on the last Thursday of school, which should provide the extra exercise that the children need after lots of chocolate eggs.

Enjoy your holidays

Wes Gregory
P &C President

EASTER RAFFLE – Thank you’s

A very big THANK YOU to everyone for all their wonderful donations that went into helping make up the wonderful prize baskets and spot prizes for our Easter Raffle, without your help this would not have been possible. Also thanks everyone who bought tickets, because of this….

The P&C managed to raise $1,880 for the school, which is a wonderful result

We would like to thank the following people for their efforts in the Easter raffle preparation:

Leanne Prance, Vicki Verhoef, Lucy Thistleton, Jess Spiby, Corina Mentink (for the generous supply of the basket filler, cellophane & ribbon) & Wes Gregory for doing the assembly announcements on the day.

Congratulations to everyone who won a prize

LET THE COUNTING BEGIN...

The Sports for Schools campaign from Coles has now come to an end! We would like to ask you to bring in any tokens you still have at home into the school, so we can send them off for approval to Coles. Kris Williams has had lots of fun making a list of all the things she would like to get for the children to use at school in their breaks and sports lessons. Tokens must be deposited in the box at the school reception no later than the 11th of May - late tokens cannot be accepted.

Thanks to everyone that shopped at Coles in the last few months to collect the tokens, we have already received over 25,000!!!

Thanks, Newborough P&C

School Banking

It’s lovely to see so many new faces at banking. Thank you for joining us! For those that banked in previous years, I sent home a note recently letting the kids know how many tokens they had accumulated. If your child didn’t receive their note, come and see me and we can check the tally. There are many kids who have outstanding rewards just waiting to be ordered. Might as well cash them in if you can!

See you next Wednesday during the school term

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below
