Principal’s Introduction

Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to Ms Williams on another wonderful intra school swimming carnival. Everything lined up beautifully with all the training that happened, the weather, great children and terrific support from parents. There are many primary schools that find it too hard to run swimming carnivals let alone run two days a week training for the children.

You could really see the difference that this made with the swimmers knowing what they had to do at the start, during and after races. Superb coaching. You could really see the impact of our school values coming through particularly Challenge Yourself and Teamwork. I always look out for those who show great sportsmanship and kindness and these were very evident in the children’s’ efforts. A very big and sincere thanks to all the parents who assisted throughout the day and to the large crowd who cheered on the swimmers. Well done to all staff at the carnival and those back at school who helped out in any way. We look forward to the interschool carnival coming up on Friday 6th April.

Leaders Luncheon

The second great event last week was the Student Leaders luncheon at Parliament House as guests of Mrs Liza Harvey MLA on Tuesday 13th March. Mr Stenhouse has organised this experience now for the last three years for our Student Leaders. This event is highly anticipated as the luncheon is like a first class restaurant with all the service and trappings. Student Leaders from Doubleview joined us. Mrs Harvey talked to the children about her leadership role and how she got into politics and why. The leaders asked a lot of really insightful questions. We went down to the chamber for question time and the Leader of the Opposition Dr. Mike Nahan welcomed our group in his opening comments which means our schools will be officially recognised in the Hansard minutes.

On Monday Federal Member for Stirling, Mr Michael Keenan, visited the school presenting the Student Leaders with a new Australian and Aboriginal flag. He was interested to hear about all the excellent work our Student Leaders undertake in the school.

Quadrangle Resurfacing

We are all getting quite excited about the resurfacing of the quadrangle that is scheduled in the term break. During this week the garden beds around the three shady trees are to be extended by a metre, barriers embedded to redirect the tree roots, new curbing and soil and mulch added. This will help stop the roots lifting the surfac and hopefully give the trees anew lease of life. We have also had the netball goals removed for repair and new sleaves will be installed so the netball goals fit tightly. The goals that are in at the moment are old ones. Once the surface is treated and painted it will be spectacularly colourful and so much safer.

The works are scheduled for the holiday and will take 17 days. We are hopeful that it will be ready for the children’s return on Tuesday 1st May. Monday is a pupil free school development day. This will be dependent there are no interuptions to the installers. If there are any delays we may need to develop a contingency plan to keep everyone off the surface until completed. Fingers crossed the weather is perfect for the holidays.

Useful Statistics from our Traffic Warden

As the use of Mobile Phones is the topic at the moment in the media I thought I would give a few statistics for Newborough Primary School;

  • 7% of drivers are on their Mobile Phones when going through the Crosswalk - I have had 3 this year that were on their iPad;
  • 22% of motor vehicles have a passenger;
  • 8% of vehicles are commercial trucks, van, utilities, etc;
  • We had 5 Multinovas through the Police Department last year between Hancock and Alice Street on Newborough. On average 4 vehicles were exceeding the speed limit of 40 kph. This year we have had the Multinova once to date;
  • The average year to date of pedestrians using the Crosswalk is 46 in the morning from 8:50am to 9:50am and 34 in the afternoon from 2:30pm to 3:30pm except Tuesday which is 2:00pm to 3:00pm. Numbers vary depending on school events and excursions, weather, day of the week, etc;

Students and parents that use the Crosswalk are courteous and respectful.

It is good to see parents leading by example and getting their children in good habits before going to High School where they will rely on Traffic Wardens to get them safely across dual carriageways and busy streets.

Administration News

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – from Week 7 onwards, cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

NAPLAN 2018

For parents with students in Years 3 and 5, a pamphlet containing information on the 2018 NAPLAN assessments were sent home last week. The tests will be conducted in Week 3 of Term 2.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. This year all students will be judged against the Achievement Standards from the Australian Curriculum.

Can I help my child prepare for the tests?

The provision of comprehensive teaching and learning programs is the best preparation that schools can provide for their students. Newborough Primary School will ensure students are familiar with the format, language, response types and time constraints of the tests. Sample questions can be accessed at via the link below on the national NAPLAN website. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

http://nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests

What additional support can schools provide to enable students to participate?

All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN. Students with disability or who have a temporary injury will be provided with assistance during the tests as specified in the National Protocols for Test Administration. Formal exemptions may be granted for students with disability, or who have recently arrived in Australia and are from a non-English-speaking background. Parents also have the right to withdraw their child from the tests. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, you must sign a parent or carer consent form. Please contact Karen Tucknott or John Worthy to discuss this further.

Term 2 – Looking ahead: Social dance Classes by Humphreys Dance Studio

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in Social dance classes from Weeks 4 -9. Together with the obvious fitness and co-ordination gained from learning to dance, this wonderful program is something from which all students will benefit. Dancing encourages appropriate social interaction, respect, co-operation, poise and social grace and of course rhythm and creativity.

The main emphasis in the social dance program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture.

The Incursion Advice note will go home later in Term One outlining costs. A reminder please that Newborough Primary School is now a ‘Cashless’ school. Please see Sharon Singleton for any matters in regards to payment plans.

Faction Swimming

Last Friday, the children in Years 4 – 6 travelled to Churchlands Senior High School to participate in our annual Faction Swimming Carnival. With much anticipation from the record number of children who were able to train this year and from the new students and Year 4’s participating for the first time, the swimming carnival was a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their water confidence and demonstrate their swimming abilities in a range of activities from novelty fun events to competitive racing.

With beautiful Autumn weather and a very enticing pool, the students representing their factions participated with great effort and determination to do their best for their team. For some children, it was their first time in a swimming carnival and for many children they had to overcome their own anxiety to demonstrate courage, determination and persistence to swim the 25m. No matter where the children finished in any event, they were rewarded with the knowledge that they had succeeded in their personal challenge and that their efforts were acknowledged by their family, friends and teachers who had supported them throughout their event.

All of the children who participated, demonstrated the Newborough values of Respect, Kindness, Team Work and Challenge Yourself. All around the pool area the children’s endeavour, good team spirit and sportsmanship was on display. The carnival is designed for maximum participation despite the children’s level of swimming experience. All of the children who attended had a fun and rewarding experience. It was delightful to see so many children smiling, cheering and encouraging their team mates during all of the events.

Once again, there was a wonderful turn out of parents, grandparents, friends and former students to support the children. Our carnivals would not be as successful and memorable for the children without the wonderful assistance and support that the parents and staff provide. I would like to sincerely thank all parents, staff and former students who helped with training and all of the jobs before, during and after the carnival. Special thanks to Mr Stenhouse, Mrs Dayman and Mr Kosok for your assistance with the set up prior to the carnival and to all of the parents and staff who assisted with the packing up after the carnival.

After finishing in first place in 2017, Corbett Faction led from the beginning of the carnival despite the wonderful individual and team efforts from all of the other swimmers in Connor and Manning Factions. Corbett Faction proved to be once again a strong team finishing in first place, however after 95 events only eight points separated Connor and Manning Factions in second and third place! Congratulations and well done to all members of every team for your terrific efforts.

Final Scores:

1st Place Corbett – 728 points
2nd Place Manning – 577 points
3rd Place Connor – 569 points

We would like to congratulate the following children who won the Championship medallions: -

Year 4 Runner-Up Champions Sophie Dallin (Connor) and Kalani Hart(Corbett)
Year 4 Champions Zinnia Blaine (Connor) and Archie Elton (Connor)
Year 5 Runner-Up Champions Suzana Brankovic (Manning) and Torren Sampson (Manning)
Year 5 Champions Holly Boshart (Corbett) and Luke Austin (Connor)
Year 6 Runner-up Champions Molly Allan (Corbett) and Ben Prance (Corbett)
Year 6 Champions Sammy Stephens (Manning) and Luca Otake (Connor)

Interschool Swimming

On Friday 6th April our Interschool team of 50 students, will travel to Greenwood College, in Greenwood to compete against Hillarys, Duncraig and Glengarry in the Coastal District Interschool Swimming competition. Selected students for this carnival have been training after school at Churchlands SHS this week. Final training for this event concludes next Tuesday 27th March. Selected students for this carnival MUST return their permission form and make payment no later than THURSDAY 29TH MARCH in order to be eligible to attend.

As all carnivals require a large number of volunteers to assist to ensure the smooth running of a carnival, I will be sending a ‘Request for Parent Helpers’ form to the parents of the Interschool Swimming Team shortly. This year, Duncraig PS is organising the carnival and will require our wonderful parents to assist with the many carnival jobs.

We wish all of the students selected, the very best of luck. Go Newborough!

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team please see Mrs Tennant in Room 9 or email vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au. It might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time!

School Banking

Hi! My name is Sonia Johansen (Mum of Sophie – Year One) and I am your new School Banking Coordinator – taking over from Megan Cowan who is moving overseas next term.

I’m a big fan of school banking and teaching kids to save. In today’s world of tap, go, buy, pay later – saving is a skill I fear our kids will miss if we don’t actively encourage it. So if you haven’t already joined school banking, come and visit Sophie and I in the library every Wednesday morning between 8:15 and 8:40. All you need is a Commonwealth Bank Dollarmites Account (which you can open at Innaloo or Karrinyup branches). The kids earn tokens every time they make a deposit (which can be any amount) and these are redeemed for rewards (cool things like balls, pens, scratch pads etc). Plus they see their savings grow!

(Which, on a purely selfish note, is very handy when you’re asked ‘Mum, can I have…?’ Now I can reply ‘I’m not sure Soph – how much have you saved?’ Ahhh see – discussion over!)

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Sonia Johansen
School Banking Coordinator

PS – I couldn’t sign off without saying a BIG thank you to Megan for all her patience teaching me the ropes. She’s left everything so well organised, it’s amazing. Good luck on your exciting adventure Megan – I’m sure you and your family will be sorely missed x

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website below.
