Class Assembly – Year Room 12 - Mrs Farmer

Note: Incursions, Excursions, Assembly days will be updated each term. This is an outline of the events that will be coming up in 2018. Please note dates are subject to change.

Principal’s Introduction

Students, staff and parents have really bought into the Positive Behaviour Support program that aims to reward students when they demonstrate the explicitly taught behaviours underpinned by the schools’ behavioural values RESPECT TEAM WORK KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF. The whole school has already earned two ‘Golden Times’, the extra recess when every class P-6 has reached 300 ‘Goldies’ and is well on the way to a third one. Once a class reaches their 300 Goldie tokens they have a small class prize prior to Golden Time. Some classes also set individual targets and children receive a class prize.

Receiving a Goldie

The process of receiving a ‘Goldie’ is absolutely crucial in the success of the program. When a staff member recognises an appropriate behaviour the student is given a ‘Goldie’. It is the recognition, conversation and eye contact between staff member and student that makes the difference, not the Goldie token itself. For example, “Thank you for RESPECTfully listening to other members in your group” or “That is fantastic work. You have really CHALLENGED YOURSELF to do your best.” The Goldie itself is really worth nothing other than a tangible item that students record on our especially modified ‘Dojo system. The student, under supervision of their teacher, places the token in a box then taps on their name. Up pops the four values options and the appropriate one is tapped and recorded against the students name and adds to the class total.

PBS Values

Have you noticed the growing array of visuals around the school representing our behavioural values? Last week the four life sized metal people cut outs were put in place along the pathway entrance to the school. Shortly large murals of our PBS logo will be painted on the end of the Library and Early Childhood classrooms along with embossed frosted glass on our front doors. We would like everyone to be reminded of our values, embrace and live them every time you are at school and hopefully permeating to home and in society as well. Thank you to all those who have provided feedback. We are continually making minor adjustments.

Waste Wise Accreditation

Last week I received a letter and certificate recognising that Newborough Primary School has successfully met the requirements to become an accredited Waste Wise School for 2018. The certificate recognises the school’s excellent efforts to reduce waste and develop positive environmental values and long-term change.

This recognition recognises much of the recycling and waste management process put in place by our schools’ Sustainability Committee over the last few years. Three key members of this committee are no longer available with Mr Luxton changing schools, Ms Murray seconded to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority and Mrs Balding on leave with her little baby Lily. Shortly I will be calling for staff, parents and students to join this important committee. Let me know in advance if you are interested.

Newborough Netball Achievements

Congratulations to Stella McQuire, Sammy Stephens and Molly Allen who have been successful in gaining a position in the Perth Netball Association development squad set to play in the State Association Competition during the June long weekend. We wish them all the very best at the next level of competition.

The Perth Netball Association have generously recognised the Newborough Primary School Netball Club for 10 years of continuous membership and support of netball at the Matthew’s Netball Centre. The photograph shows the three excited players with the banner depicting the clubs 10 year recognition.

Account Reminders

Account reminders will be sent out to families in the coming week. This is a reminder of items still outstanding and may not include future incursions and excursions for the term. Payments are to be made via direct deposit only as we are now a cashless school.

Direct Deposit Payments only

From November 2017, families have been notified via the newsletter of changes to the payment methods now available at Newborough Primary School in 2018.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking – from Week 7 onwards, cash payments will be returned to parents (unless prior arrangements have been made with our Manager Corporate Services) and a request made to pay via internet banking as the school no longer banks each week. This ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to our school and Volunteering

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

All volunteers are also required to complete a confidential declaration. These forms need to be completed each year and are available from your child’s teacher and our administration office.

This will allow you to volunteer your time as a parent helper in the classroom, on excursions, in the canteen etc.

Easter Raffle

How good would it be to have a massive basket of Easter goodies all to yourself? Well, to have a chance at that happening, we need to donate all the baskets, Easter dot-to-dots, those little fluffy chicks and of course the chocolate eggs to your classrooms Easter baskets. All these donations must be in by Tuesday 27th March. Then, Leanne, Vicky and some other awesome parent helpers will assemble the baskets.

Finally, you need to buy some tickets. The more tickets; the better the chance for a prize! Tickets are 50c each. Return these to your classroom teacher by Wednesday 28th March 2018.

School Photos

Last week, we had school photos and everybody was looking neat. All payments needed to be in by 6th March 2018. Remember, only online payments are available.

Harmony Day

On the 21st March 2018 is ‘Harmony Day’. This celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. On this day the students are invited to dress up in clothes from a country of their heritage or birthplace. Kids participating must give a gold coin donation to their teacher.

Year 6 Camp

You will notice there will be a lot less good looking and intelligent people around the school from the 7th-9th March 2018. All the year 6s are very excited about school camp coming up.

Students will be doing climbing, snorkelling, mountain biking and archery whilst there. Not to mention doing the dishes, tidying the dormitories and sweeping the floors. Camp will be held at ‘Point Peron Camp School.’

Ocean Net Conference

On Monday the 19th of February Newborough’s Year 6 students went to the Ocean Net Conference. The Ocean Net Conference is when Newborough, Deanmore, Yuluma, Doubleveiw and Scarborough Primary all came with their Year 6s to HBF stadium to talk about leadership. We had 3 speakers come in -politician Liza Harvey, Station officer of Perth fire station Michael Watson and Army Leader Paul Dehnert. These wonderful speakers all talked about leadership. After we all had recess we went on to do our activities. We split up into 3 groups and learnt about the different aspects of leadership.

Ocean Net Conference

First activity was on Public Speaking, we talked about how each speaker had a different way of speaking, then we were put into groups with different students from all schools and talked about how you should stand and speak and then after that we made our own little quick speeches on leadership, paired up with someone from a different school and presented our speeches to them.

Second activity was on Teamwork Building and was all about getting to know each other. We played a game that was all about cooperating with others that maybe we didn't know so well. One of the other interesting games we played was using our bodies with a mix of all schools to make a playground. We had to think about others and weather they were strong enough, not flexible and other composites a leader would show to ensure the safety of their peers.

The last activity we did was all about Mindfulness. In this class we talked about sometimes you can get really tired when working really hard and you need to let your body take a break. Next we got with a partner and copied their exact movement and this was showing us just how much our bodies work. For the final activity we did some meditating which really helped us really re-centre ourselves because we had been working really hard all day.

At the very end of the conference only Newborough students got together and talked about what we learned and what we were now going to bring to the school. All of this told us just how important leadership is and the qualities we have to bring to the school.

Reminders

A reminder that swimming training continues this week, it will be on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at Churchlands SHS from 3:30-4:30pm. Also we would like to Confirm the faction swimming carnival date is Friday the 16th of March at Churchlands Senior High School and that the interschool swimming carnival is on Friday the 6th of April.

Winter Sports teams have been selected for Soccer, Netball and AFL and teams will be ready to start training.

Round Table Meeting

On the 21st of February, the student leaders held the first round table meeting of the year. At lunch that day the student leaders, the principal and four very lucky Pre-Primary students, all met down at the library for a delicious lunch and a talk about the school. First we dug into the lunch that was supplied by the school, which was an assorted array of wraps and we enjoyed them very much. The first question that we asked was what the students liked about the school. Luckily, we had lots of wonderful compliments from all of the Pre-Primary students! The next question was what we think we could do to improve our school. We wrote down lots of helpful feedback that we will definitely consider adding to our amazing school. I think all of us would say the first round table meeting was a huge success, and we can’t wait for our next one which will be in week 8 with the year 6’s.

NAPLAN 2018

For parents with students in Years 3 and 5, a pamphlet containing information on the 2018 NAPLAN assessments were sent home last week. The tests will be conducted in Week 3 of Term 2.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. This year all students will be judged against the Achievement Standards from the Australian Curriculum.

Can I help my child prepare for the tests?

The provision of comprehensive teaching and learning programs is the best preparation that schools can provide for their students. Newborough Primary School will ensure students are familiar with the format, language, response types and time constraints of the tests. Sample questions can be accessed in the link below. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests

What additional support can schools provide to enable students to participate?

All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN. Students with disability or who have a temporary injury will be provided with assistance during the tests as specified in the National Protocols for Test Administration. Formal exemptions may be granted for students with disability, or who have recently arrived in Australia and are from a non-English-speaking background. Parents also have the right to withdraw their child from the tests. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, you must sign a parent or carer consent form. Please contact Karen Tucknott or John Worthy to discuss this further.

On-Entry 2018

Making sure your child has the necessary skills for future literacy and numeracy development is crucial.

Over the coming weeks, all Pre-Primary students will be participating in the Department of Education’s state-wide On-entry Assessment Program.

The purpose of the program is to provide teachers with an opportunity, early in the year, to collect information on the essential literacy and numeracy skills and understandings of each child in their class. This will assist your child’s teacher to develop informed and intentional play-based teaching programs, designed to reflect individual needs and foster each child’s learning.

Some assessment tasks can be included in the daily teaching program and some will be carried out one-to-one, in a quiet area. This will provide your child and their teacher with valuable time together, as well as give the teacher the opportunity to observe the behaviours and processes your child uses in responding to questions.

In Literacy, the program includes:

  • Speaking and listening
  • Reading – recognising simple rhyming words, listening to and identifying the sound at the beginning of a word, and listening to and talking about two stories
  • Writing – drawing a picture and, if appropriate, attempting to write their name and some words.

In Numeracy, the program includes:

  • Number – looking at small amounts and numbers, matching and counting
  • Measurement – comparing length and hefting (lifting objects to find out which one is heavier)
  • Geometry – looking at shapes and showing an understanding of simple ‘position’ words.

With the purpose of the program being to meet each child’s learning needs in a play-based environment, it is anticipated that all children will be included in the program. If you would like further information, or to discuss your child’s participation, please contact your child’s teacher.

Here are some fun, everyday activities that you can do with your child to help them develop essential early literacy skills:

  • play word games when you are out together – games such as “I spy”
  • have a special daily time at the dinner table where each person takes turns to share the best part of their day, while everyone else listens. Sometimes include time for everyone to take turns to ask one question set up a place for your child to paint and draw – sometimes do it with them. Encourage them sometimes to write about their creation….but wait till the paint is dry!
  • read to them. Share a special story at bedtime; make it a relaxing time that you both look forward to at the end of the day!
  • encourage them to retell you an event or a story – “What happened first/at the beginning?” “What happened next?
  • sometimes, talk about the stories that you read together. Ask questions that require more than just a yes or no answer. “What was that your favourite part?” “Why was that your favourite part?” … These are called open-ended questions
  • have some dress-up clothes available for your child to use – ‘make believe’ gives your child an opportunity to practice their language and communication skills
  • show that writing serves a purpose - make a shopping list together (your child could draw a picture of some items next to the words); let them do a simple drawing or card, and mail it!
  • think out loud – it is a great way to ‘model’ to your child how you solve problems.

Term 2 – Looking ahead: Social dance Classes by Humphreys Dance Studio

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in Social dance classes from Weeks 4 -9. Together with the obvious fitness and co-ordination gained from learning to dance, this wonderful program is something from which all students will benefit. Dancing encourages appropriate social interaction, respect, co-operation, poise and social grace and of course rhythm and creativity.

The main emphasis in the social dance program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture.

The Incursion Advice note will go home later in Term One outlining costs. A reminder please that Newborough Primary School is now a ‘Cashless’ school. Please see Sharon Singleton for any matters in regards to payment plans.

Harmony Day Wednesday 21st March 2018 - Racism No Way!

Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Held every year on 21st March, Harmony Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.

At Newborough Primary School, all classes will be participating in a range of activities in the classroom to recognise and promote all cultures within our school through our values of Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself.

Cultural Dress-Up Day

We invite all students and staff to participate in a Whole School Cultural Dress day, where we are all encouraged to wear clothing of our own culture. Please be mindful that if your child has Physical Education on this day, they will need to wear appropriate attire to complete this lesson in.

Faction Swimming Carnival

Our annual Faction Swimming Carnival for all students in Years 4 – 6 will be held on Friday 16th March from 10.30am - 2.30pm at Churchlands Senior High School.

I would like to thank all of the parents who have been able to get their children to the pool for training so that they can develop their swimming skills for this carnival. I would also like to sincerely thank all of the parents and staff for your assistance and support at training so that the children are given the best possible opportunity to prepare for this carnival.

Our faction carnival swimming training programme will finish on Thursday 8th March.

Parents and students are reminded that their permission forms for the carnival MUST be returned by Monday 12th March and that payment for the carnival via internet banking must be completed by Friday 9th March in order for the students to attend.

All students will be advised of their swimming events the week beginning Monday 12th March.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) programme is now in full flight. We have already enjoyed 2 whole school rewards, with the students in every class in the school having earned at least 600 ‘Goldies’ for our 4 focus behaviours of kindness, respect, teamwork and challenge yourself. We would like to encourage parents to use this language at home, also.

You may have also noticed some new signage around the school. This includes our striking metal sculptures, lining the entrance to the office, the 4 values signage at the base of the verandahs and the PBS logo stickers on all the bins. Over the April holidays, a mural will be painted onto the outside wall of the library and in the Undercover Area. We will also soon take possession of flags displaying our 4 Newborough behaviours and these will be placed both along the driveway and Kindy entrances to the school on special days. They will also travel to special events outside of the school, such as Sport carnivals.

Newborough Cares Week!

The cupboard is bare!

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to meet some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate non-perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers as needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs.

Some suggestions of what to donate : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers. Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal…

The other option is for people to donate a $10 Woolworths gift card. This would be used by me (not given to families) when there is an immediate need that the stock I have doesn’t meet.

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food items to Room 13 before school during week 7 (12th – 16th March), any day that week.

Thanks,

Ali Dee
School Chaplain

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is in the link below.
