Principal’s Introduction

Nature Playground Repairs

After the damage that occurred late last year and some normal wear and tear, particularly to the maze we are looking for suitable recycled timber to make repairs and strengthen the maze. In keeping with the principles of re-use/re-cycle we are collecting old timber. The timber needs to be smooth (We don’t want wood with splinters), not painted and preferably well-seasoned for use outside. We are also looking for wood screws, nuts and bolts, coach bolts etc. to help strengthen and hold the walls and frames. Rainer Kosok is assisting with the repairs and the P&C looking at how we sustain and fund ongoing upkeep. If you are interested in helping or have timbers etc. to drop off please see John Worthy.

Student Safety

Student safety and wellbeing is always a major priority in our school. Having such an open and accessible site means we always need to be vigilant, proactive and responsive.

Travelling to and from School - Stranger Danger Reminders

Here are some suggestions to help your children stay safe:

  • always travel in a group
  • walk on the right hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic
  • wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway
  • stay in areas that are well lit
  • stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres)
  • be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably
  • if you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number
  • if a passing car stops nearby, never get too close
  • run from a situation if you feel at risk
  • give this advice to your brothers and sisters, especially if they are younger
  • report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school and the police
  • if you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car
  • report numbers plates of cars and the clothing or distinguishing features of individuals to police.

You can call 13 14 44 to report an incident to WA Police (only use 000 in an emergency) or 1800 333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers.

Safe Parking

Through the Mayor of the City of Stirling, Mark Irwin, Mayor and one of our local Coastal Ward Councillors, we have received information including a brochure promoting Safe Parking at Schools. The brochures are available from the front office or on the City of Stirling website via the website below. Amongst the key points Mayor Irwin makes is that vehicles only park in designated bays not on verges, footpaths, facing the wrong way or stopping on the road to let children/passengers in or out.

https://www.stirling.wa.gov.au/Pages/SearchResults.aspx?k=school%20parking

The City of Stirling have been tremendous supporters of parking initiatives around Newborough PS with over forty bays and limited access to the Karrinyup Sports centre. Last year they agreed to modification for the disability parking near the school’s main entrance. The City also strongly encourage walking and riding bikes/scooters to school.

Golden Time

Our school achieved the first Golden Time reward recess after only five days at school. That means that each class from years Pre-primary to years six achieved the Class Pass target of three hundred Golden Tokens or Goldies. Every student has earned Goldies along the way. Fourteen classes times three hundred means at least four thousand two hundred great things have been recognised and rewarded. Once a class gets their Class Pass they celebrate with a class reward. Some classes went to the Nature Playground others had an icy-pole or free time. Students earn Goldies for demonstrating our behavioural values of Respect, Kindness, Team-Work and Challenge Yourself. The whole school celebrated Golden Time extra recess on February 7th. Classes are well on the way to a second Golden Time recess.

Quadrangle Resurfacing

I have been advised that by the contractor ‘Sporting Services’ that they will be undertaking the resurfacing of our quadrangle throughout the term one holiday break. During this period the quadrangle will be fenced off to allow for the works and the curing period. Without interruption by weather the process takes 17 days. This means that the quadrangle area will be out of action all through the holidays. If all goes well we will have a fantastic new surface straight after the break.

Payments for 2018 – Direct Deposit Only

Accounts will be sent home shortly with your child. Thank you to those parents who have already paid their voluntary contributions through the booklist – this certainly helps the school to ensure that resources are made available to the various year groups for this school year. Please remember that you are always welcome to enter into a Payment Plan – see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, if you would like to take up this option.

In anticipation of moving across to the Department of Education’s new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School has moved across to a cashless system from January 2018.

All payments are requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking, which ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

2018 School Photos

Our school photos will be taken on Tuesday 27th February and Wednesday 28th February 2018.

  • The school has chosen to use the online ordering system. And your child will be given an online ordering instruction slip and a unique student code for you to follow and place your order online via the internet.
  • The expiry date for online ordering is the 6th March 2018. Any orders received after this date are treated as re orders and will incur additional costs.

Family Photos:

  • Envelopes can be obtained from Administration.
  • Family photos are being taken each morning before school. Please bring your children in on the days listed above via your child’s surname to avoid long queues.
  • Please ensure that your family envelope with enclosed payment is handed to the Photographers on photo day.

Music News

Junior and Senior Choir

Exciting news! Our Year 4-6 students have been entered to perform the WA Massed Choir Festival at the Perth Concert Hall in September 2018. Choir members will be learning a repertoire of 10 amazing songs and will be conducted by Mary-Anne Goyder and Mirelle Hopwood. Watch this space for more information about ticket sales and excursion/permission letters as we get closer to performance day!

With school photographs coming up next week, it is important that all choir members attend their rehearsal this coming week as we are sorting uniforms after the rehearsal. Anyone absent must please come and see me to arrange a uniform before Wednesday, 28th February.

Chaplain News

The cupboard is bare!

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to meet some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate non-perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers as needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs. Some suggestions of what to donate : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers. Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal.

The other option is for people to donate a $10 Woolworths gift card. This would be used by me (not given to families) when there is an immediate need that the stock I have doesn’t meet.

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food items to Room 13 before school during week 7 (12th – 16th March), any day that week.

If you have any questions please see Ali Dee (Tuesday & Friday) or Nat Kos

Thanks,
Ali Dee
School Chaplain

P&C News

Dear Parents, citizens and students;

Something’s change, some stay the same, and so it is at the Newborough Primary P&C.

At our first meeting of the year (12th Feb) long serving P&C member and President Neale McQuire stood down from his role. Neale has been a long term supporter of the school community and has devoted many hours of his time to projects at our school that have improved our facilities and also given great enjoyment to the students. Thank you Neale for your efforts.

Josh Stewart will also be stepping down as Secretary. Josh has been a great secretary for the last 2 years. Thank you Josh.

Lucy Thistleton (who by all reports is a numbers whizz) will however be continuing as treasurer, which we are very thankful for.

Thanks must also go to the many other parents who volunteer and take on other P&C roles.

This year the office bearers will be:

  • Wes Gregory – President
  • Tanya Johnson – Vice President
  • Lucy Thistleton - Treasurer
  • Carly Fowkes - Secretary

We hope that the strong tradition of community at Newborough Primary will continue and grow this year, and so we invite everyone to be involved with us at the P&C as you feel you can.

I am at the school most mornings for drop off, so please come and introduce yourself, I am always happy to chat (sometimes to the frustration of my wife).

Next meeting is on Monday 19th March at 7pm in the school library, all welcome.

Wes Gregory
P&C President

Please return them to your class teacher with the student’s name and room number clearly written on every ticket along with the money in the envelope provided, by Wednesday 28th March 2018. If you require any additional tickets, please see the ladies in the Front Office.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below.
