Principal’s Introduction

Goodbye and Best Wishes

I would like to take this final opportunity for the year to thank all parents, students, community members and staff for another rewarding year. As usual it has been an action packed and exciting year at Newborough.

We have had a huge year with the focus on STEM, mathematics problem solving and continued development of the English learning area.

The P&C again have been superb with their support of the school with events such as Moort Boodja, Easter raffle, Ride/Walk to School days, the Disco, Quiz Night, the delightful community movie night early in the year and an unfortunate second one cancelled due to storms. We also had the spectacular opening of the Nature Playground with Neville Collard and a smoking ceremony. Coolungar Marlak Kadadjinny or Children’s Bush Learning’ has been a spectacular success with our students, families and the local community outside school. Special thanks to the Otway and Kosok families who did much of the work and inspired the real naturalness our playground offers and Mrs Morgan who coordinated the opening.

Whilst there are so many people to thank I would like to single out several who have been absolutely wonderful. Miss Karen Tucknott, Mr Nick Stenhouse, Mrs Sharon Singleton, Ms Kate Tyndall, Mrs D’Alonzo-Barkley who are fantastic people to work with and do a great job around the Administration area. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful teaching and non-teaching staff at this school. To Mr Neale McQuire all the P&C team who work so tirelessly for our school running all the many parent activities that support our children. To Mr Matt Gaunt who has lead our School Board with determination and distinction. This year has been a particularly big year for the Board with our school review in term one and the development of our next three year Business Plan 2018-2020 that promises strong consolidation and exciting new directions including the much anticipated Positive Behaviour Support program that will fire up next year.

We thank Mr Luxton who is heading off to Illawarra PS, Mrs Holmes who is going to Oberthur PS, Mrs Kurasho who is still attached to Newborough but will take up a full time pre-primary position at Winthrop PS for 2018. As we are still going through staffing processes for Music and Japanese positions so I won’t be able to make any staffing announcements until the start of the new school year.

For all those students, staff and families who are not with us next year please take our very best wishes and appreciation for your contributions to the school. You will always be part of the Newborough family. Keep in touch and know you will be warmly welcomed back at your school.

We say goodbye to several staff, graduating year sixes and families who have been champions of our school for many years. We also have several families that will be finishing their direct attachment to the school as their youngest children head off to high schools. Fiona and David Irwin (Zachary, Thomas and Samuel) have been wonderful contributors over many years on the P&C and School Board. Always available and taking on so many important jobs whether doing the booklist, constructing playgrounds, cupboards and staffroom, painting the office or mucking in and putting together Moort Boodja. Their love of a social event and celebrations are legendary. So much more! Sabine and Ian Pollcock (Adam and Alex) through the P&C, Board and of course the brains and brawn behind Moort Boodja. Jolene and Charles Otway (Alex and Indianna) as mentioned with the Nature Playground, Melissa McNally (Shea and Ben) in the uniform shop, Tracy and Dave Richards (Kate), Tim Roberts and Michelle Hopkins (Amy and Catelin) to all who have helped out big or small we thank you most sincerely. Your legacy is the ongoing family culture of Newborough.

Exciting 2018

We have had a fantastic 2017. Planning for 2018 and beyond has been well underway now for quite some time. If all goes to plan we have an exciting school structure and several new teachers to add to our current excellent group. This year we had our School Review with the Department of Education Services providing a comprehensive review that confirmed much of what we already knew and challenged our thinking. The staff and School Board have worked diligently preparing our new Business Plan 2018-2020 that has now been completed and endorsed. This plan, that will be jazzed up with some photos and presented to the school community in early 2018, is already embedded in our Operational Plans for next year. Where we have been doing well as a school we will consolidate. Areas such as our Literacy and Numeracy. The key focus for next year will be the much-anticipated Positive Behaviour Support program which we have been working on for two years with our motif design (What stories does it tell?), identifying our expected behaviours (Values), preparing staff, designing the reward system and getting all the promotional material ready. This program emphasises the explicit teaching of expected behaviours RESPECT TEAMWORK KINDNESS CHALLENGE YOURSELF in a range of contexts and provides individual, class and school rewards for those behaviours. One of the keys to success is that all staff, students, and parents buy into and use the processes. I encourage families to use these values at home and we will support this with some material and workshops for parents next year. The emphasis is on the positive. This program doesn’t replace our current Behaviour Management processes for those who choose poor behaviours. We will still be using the 1, 2 3 Magic and Emotional Coaching model and current consequences structure.

We are really looking forward to having the new flexipave surface covering the quadrangle. It was hoped this would be done over the holiday break as it takes some time to prepare, apply and cure. This timeline is looking less likely as we also have a large roof and timber replacement works scheduled for the white ant affected north wing. This will require skip bins and trade vehicles moving across the quadrangle. We don’t want our new surface damaged. I have a meeting with Programmed on Wednesday to work out the scheduling so fingers crossed. Coincidently we also have a buildings inspection to determine the state and priority areas requiring work. I have quite a list when they arrive!

Happy Christmas Everyone. Have a safe and enjoyable break ready for a bright and brand New Year in 2018.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“So this is Christmas and what have you done? Another one over and a new one just begun.”

School Reopens 2018

Office staff and Administration commence on Thursday 25th January 2018 (Friday 26th January is Australia Day Holiday). Teachers resume on Monday 29th January. Class lists will be posted on classroom doors on Monday 29th January to coincide with the collection of Booklists from our school library from 9:00 – 11:00am. The Uniform Shop will also be open during this time.

Lost Property

Lost property is located outside the Uniform Shop every morning – please check for any missing items by Thursday December 14, 2017. Remaining lost property will be donated to the Uniform Shop for resale or a local charity shop.

2018 Voluntary Contributions

The Voluntary Contributions fees have been established and approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements. The contribution fee for 2018 will remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution will remain at $25 per child for 2018.

Payment is requested at the commencement of the school year, however this facility is also available on your 2018 Requirements List for your convenience (if purchasing through the P&C).

Payments for 2018

The Department of Education has announced plans to introduce a new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS across the entire department. Roll out will commence in targeted schools in 2018, with all schools across WA to be using the new system by 2020.

In anticipation of moving across to the new system and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School will move across to a cashless system from January 2018. All payments will be requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking, which ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2017

Newborough Primary School have delivered your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 11th December.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is imperative that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Former Newborough Student Shines

It is with great excitement and pride that Newborough Primary School congratulates Wil Powell (a former NPS student) who has been drafted to the AFL club, Gold Coast with their first draft pick at number 19 in this year's draft.

I had the pleasure of teaching Wil when he was a student at Newborough. He had outstanding Athletic ability and was the school and Interschool Senior Boy Champion at the Athletics Carnival in his final year of Primary school in Year Seven, 2012. Wil was a member of our successful AFL football team for two years. His speed, endurance and ball handling skills set him apart from his peers when he played AFL. The football umpires that came from Claremont Football Club, also recognised his talent and often said to me that Wil could have a successful future in football.

Wil played Colts for Claremont Football Club after playing many years for Scarborough Football Club as a junior. He is passionate about his footy and has shown how with respect to yourself, family and others hard work and practise you can live your dreams.

On behalf of Newborough Primary School, I would like to wish Wil, all the very best for his future AFL football career.

Chaplain News

As we approach the end of this year I would like to say what a privilege it has been to serve the Newborough Primary School community during 2017. There is so much that we can be thankful for – great achievements by students in different areas, celebrating life events with staff, sporting achievements as a school, the small and the big acts of kindness that students extend to each other.… to name just a few.

I hope that this holiday time will be a restful one for our families, a time to celebrate and remember each other and recharge our batteries for the year ahead.

Recently I read a great article on resilience that I thought would be good to keep in mind and consider putting in to practice.

I look forward to seeing you all again in 2018. Thank you for all the ways you contribute to our community. Take care.

Japanese News

Thank you to all the staff and parent support this year, especially the Japanese mums that assisted with running the cultural events. I appreciate your help, and would not have been able to deliver these events without your assistance.

In Week 9, Hugh (Year 6), Luca (Year 5) and Alex (Year 4), put on an amazing kendo demonstration for Rooms 13-15. Audience members were impressed with their commitment to their craft.

In Week 10, students from Years 4-6 took part in a Japanese summer festival. Activities included; dressing in a summer kimono, trying a 'scoop a goldfish' game (with toys, not real goldfish) and eating Japanese style shaved ice. I hope that students enjoyed having a taste of traditional summer festival activities.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website can be found below:
