Principal’s Introduction

Newborough School Board Elections

Nominations have now closed for the vacant two parent/guardian positions for the School Board. As there were only two nominations, there was no need to go to a voting process. Congratulations to Mrs. Kris Hiscock and Mr. Ian Garrett who will commence their terms for the start of the 2018 school year. Mrs. Hiscock has been re-elected and Mr. Garrett for the first time. A comprehensive induction will be undertaken in early 2018.

Mr Stenhouse has been elected by staff to replace Mrs Leah Balding who has concluded her 3 year term and will be leaving shortly to have a baby.

The Board wishes to express their appreciation, to Mrs Balding and Mr Ian Pollock for their wonderful service and dedication on the Board. They leave terrific legacies and big shoes to fill.

I am very pleased to also announce that the two current community positions with Mrs. Liza Harvey and Dr. Irene Froyland have been extended for 2018.

Specialist Science Laboratory

I have just been advised that the school has been successful with our application for a Science classroom refurbishment and one-off grant to purchase $25000 worth of science resources. Once the refurbishment has finished in either 2018 or 2019, depending on the Facilities Program Delivery schedule, we will be offered a pick and buy list of resources to choose. This is very exciting for our school and will complement our Science Specialist position and work in STEM.

2018 Planning

This time of year is always a bit of a balancing act. Keeping the good ship Newborough sailing along till the end of the year and preparing the next part of the journey without distracting from the final part of this year.

As you read this, our class structure, teacher placement and student placements have all been done. We have a fantastic group of teachers and Education Assistants across the board. Class lists are now put away and our hope is that our numbers don’t change too much and that we don’t have to restructure before school commences for next year. Class lists will be put on classroom doors to time with the booklist pick up on Monday 29th January, from 9am.

Sadly we have just found out that we are losing our Music teacher, Mrs Holmes and Japanese teacher, Mrs Kurasho, who have both been offered and accepted positions at other schools. This means we will now be frantically looking for Music and Japanese teachers to fill these important positions.

From the start of next year we will have a new, more logical and sequenced numbering system for our classrooms. The numbers commence with the Kindy being Room 1 then 2, 3 and 4 in the Pre-primary block across to Room 4, where Miss Watson currently resides (current Room 12), Rooms 5-17 around the quadrangle to where Ms Phillips’ current room is located, and the current Japanese classroom will be Room 18.

Major Works

The school community is very excited about the resurfacing of the quadrangle area. The current thinking is green around the outsides and blue courts, similar to Woodlands PS (Pictured). It is hoped that this can all be done so when we get back at the start of the year we have a brilliant flash of colour and great surface to play on. We have just been advised that another major works programs will be scheduled during the break. Timbers and roofing above the western wing will be replaced, following a white ant infestation. The nest is dead and the structural engineer cleared the area as safe but it still requires work. This is particularly messy work given the age of ceilings and the amount of accumulated mess up there in the roof space. The work program will require vehicle movement and large rubbish bins. We certainly don’t want them messing up our new quadrangle. As you can gather the timing of works is crucial. Fingers crossed we can get it all done in the break.

CCTV and Vandalism

As I am sure you are aware, we suffered considerable damage and mess two weekends ago when a group of teenagers chose to ‘party’ in the school grounds. There was a lot of wilful damage to the Nature Playground, trampolining on our shade covers, faeces turned into mud and squelched around parts of our veranda and climbing around on the early childhood roof with a teacher trying to work inside. Fortunately our new CCTV picked up some of the main culprits and, with further investigation, others were identified. Some were former students who should have known much better. The police have these names and are visiting parents and in some cases will be issuing juvenile cautions and telling them to keep away from the school. One former student has offered to come back and do some community service. I have advised our students that if they are in company with those causing problems and they don’t tell their parents or leave, even if they don’t cause the damage, they are complicit by association.

I am pleased to be able to advise that the Nature Playground has been re-opened, apart from the maze that still has broken pickets and some exposure to sharp material. This will be repaired at a later date.

Kindy 2018 Expo

Thanks to our wonderful Admin staff for arranging another very successful Kindy Expo last week. Our new parents were able to come and meet their Kindy teachers for 2018, as well as representatives from Mulberry Tree Before and After School Care, Commonwealth School Banking, the P&C, the WA Schools Canteen Association and our Community Nurses. A great deal of effort goes into the planning of this type of event which welcomes our new families into the Newborough community, and we thank all the representatives for their time.

Payments for 2018

The Department of Education has announced plans to introduce a new, state of the art financial and administration system called WebSIS across the entire department. Roll out will commence in targeted schools in 2018, with all schools across WA to be using the new system by 2020.

In anticipation of moving across to the new system and in order to streamline the voluntary contribution and excursion/incursion payment processes in 2018, Newborough Primary School will move across to a cashless system from January 2018. All payments will be requested to be made via direct deposit through internet banking, which ensures that there is a clear paper trail for all payments, parents will have lodgement receipts from their banks and payments can be processed in a timely manner. The majority of our families have already embraced internet banking and direct deposits are the preferred method of payment, using mobile devices or computers.

If you do not have access to internet banking, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, to make alternative arrangements.

Free Dress Day

On Friday, 8th December (Week 9), the Student Leaders are organising a free dress day. It is a gold coin donation to participate. Money raised from the day will go towards our World Vision Sponsor Child and the Lions Club. The Lion’s Club are supporting local sick, handicapped and severely disabled children who are currently in PMH by organising a Children’s Big Day out. We really look forward to seeing lots of students in free dress and being able to support two great causes!

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2017

Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 11th December.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is imperative that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

End of School Event

School Banking

School Banking for 2017 has almost come to end. Thank you to everyone who has helped me with the running game of the program.

Today was the last day of school banking - thanks to the Thistleton family for helping out today.

Next year school Banking at Newborough will be structured differently and we will use a drop box system. Deposit books can be dropped into a secure box and will be collected for processing and returned to your child once a week. More information will be provided once details of the box location have been confirmed. I hope that the new system will allow more people to participate by removing a structured time and day for deposit.

QuickCliq ( Formally Our Online Canteen)

Our online canteen ordering system QuickCliq (formerly known as "Our Online Canteen") is making changes to their fees which will affect canteen prices when ordering through QuickCliq.

The changes are:

  • $0.28 charge for Credit Card Payment under $10 will be REMOVED
  • Introducing a NEW service charge of $0.19 per order (from 1st October)

QuickCliq is offering up to 15% of this service charge back to the P&C (who runs the canteen) and we will investigate how to get access to this and use it for the benefit of the school community.

Note that these fee's only apply when using QuickCliq to order from the canteen.

If you have any questions or feedback about this change, you can contact the P&C Secretary at newboroughpcsec@gmail.com.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website can be found below:
