Principal’s Introduction
End of Year Christmas Arrangements
The Christmas and year break is looming large and fast with only four weeks and a couple of days to go. Student Christmas Cards – We ask that children who wish to give Christmas cards only do so in the last week of school and use the school’s Christmas Postal Service. Miss Tucknott has organised a “Santa Letter/Cards Christmas Sack’ that will be located outside the Uniform Shop for cards and letters to be dropped in before school. Our student leaders will sort out them out and distribute later in the day to minimise disruptions to classes.
Christmas Candy Canes and Lollies – We ask that students don’t hand out Christmas Candy Canes and lollies at school.
Staff Announcements and Student Placements
Planning is well under way for the 2018 school year. Thank you to all those parents who have written to me with information to assist with class placements. This period has now closed and teachers will shortly be making up classes. Class structure, staff and student placements will be kept confidential till booklist collection day in case changes need to be made.
We are currently making final teacher and staff appointments. I can announce that Mrs Claire Warr, Ms Sarah Lydon and Miss Cass Adams, (Science Specialist), who is currently in South Africa and will be getting married this weekend, have all been re-appointed. Ms Lauren Danker returns after a stint in the Department’s Professional Learning Institute. Mr Dan Luxton has won a position at another school and will be leaving us at the end of the year.
Mrs Kelly Hughes, year 2, and husband Rowan, and Mrs Ashley Cross, Education Assistant Kindy, and husband Robert, have both announced that they are having their first child early next year. This is very exciting news. 2017 has been quite an amazing year or so with Miss Anderson, Mrs O’Dea already having a baby and Mrs Balding due in January. I think we need to test the water around here.
Policy Development ‘Before and After School Play Policy – Kindergarten and Preprimary Areas’
The school is currently developing a Before and After School Play Policy for our Kindergarten and Pre-primary area. All parents/guardians and school community members are invited to provide feedback to Miss Tucknott (Karen.Tucknott2@education.wa.edu.au) or myself (John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au) on developing the above policy. We currently have in place Interim Guidelines for Early Childhood Before and After School play as we raise awareness to issues and negotiate a balanced policy that promotes play, social interaction and allows staff to do their work. The policy when adjustments from the feedback will go to the School Board to make recommendations to me as principal. It is important that you read the Pre-amble and Interim Guidelines then the ‘draft’ policy. This will help with an understanding of the issues. Miss Tucknott and I welcome clarification and discussion. Most of all we would welcome constructive feedback. Staff have also be afforded the opportunity to provide feedback.
The feedback period needs to close by Monday 27th November to allow time to make any amendments and get this in a timely fashion to the Board.
The new policy will begin implementation for the start of 2018.
STEM Award
Shuka Otake Year 2 Room 4
Shuka has excellent communication skills. These skills allow her to listen carefully to instructions, follow procedures and present her findings. This is an important skill that she enthusiastically applies to all STEM subjects. Shuka works well in groups and supports her fellow students. She gives 100% effort in all that she does and her bookwork is exemplary. Shuka asks questions when she does not understand concepts and ideas. This is a trait of a true scientist and is to be encouraged. She is inquisitive about all aspects of STEM and demonstrates passion and determination in all that she does. Well Done Shuka!

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2017
Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 11th December.
The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:
- timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
- administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
- an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
- parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is imperative that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.
To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.
We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.
Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.
Kind regards,
Karen Tucknott
Deputy Principal
Lost Property
There is an increasing amount of lost property being left on school grounds, after hours and during school.
Please check the lost property rack, located outside the Uniform Shop, for missing items. Any items that are unlabelled and left over at the end of every two weeks are donated to the Uniform Shop for second hand resale or disposed of. We strongly suggest that your child’s property is clearly labelled to ensure it finds its way back to its rightful owner.

The book fair was a huge success. The students had such fun looking through the bookshelves to see what was available. I'd like to give a big thank you to the parents, grandparents, carers and students who made purchases at the fair. Every dollar spent has earned our school valuable rewards that will be used toward new books for our library. Thank you again to you all came and supported our school. For those who ordered books, the order has been placed. As soon as the books arrive, I will deliver them to the classrooms.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:
