Principal’s Introduction

Quadrangle Resurfacing

The P&C have initiated and are paying for resurfacing of our highly used and appreciated quadrangle. This is a very generous contribution that has been quoted at just over $40 000. Every child will benefit as this area is extremely popular for general play and our highly valued sports program. The new surface will not only brighten up the whole area but will make it a lot safer. The current surface is quite abrasive and unfriendly for spills and falls. The Department of Education have indicated that the current surface will not be considered for resurfacing in the foreseeable future.

The scope of works includes grinding the existing asphalt surface, thoroughly cleaning away any debris, filling and fixing any major cracks before applying Plexipave Acrylic resurfacer and two coats of colourful Plexipave Fortified finisher. The process also includes line marking with our current netball and basketball lines, handball courts and short tennis courts. We will see if there is provision to add a few more games like hopscotch. Plexipave is a well-known surface used for the Australian Open, Hopman Cup and the State Tennis Centre.

All going well the works will be undertaken during the summer vacation in readiness for the start of the 2018 school year.

Vandalism at School

The last few weeks, including the school holidays, have been horrendous for our school with unwanted visitors causing vandalism and leaving obscene graffiti in and around the school. These incidences have all occurred outside school hours. Not only does this cause damage it has been quite intimidating for our staff when verbally abused and confronted. Our gardener and cleaners are generally the first staff on site each day. They do a great job fixing up, cleaning and reporting damage to get repairs done, usually before students and staff arrive. This takes up considerable time from their normal duties. On two occasions whilst staff were working during their holidays the police had to be called and School Security on four occasions. We have staff that will not come to school out of school hours unless there are other staff there because they feel unsafe.

To give you some idea of what is happening we have had graffiti scribbled, painted and gauged into the tables near the library, two goal posts bent in half, posters and poster cabinets damaged, drink fountains clogged with sand, toilet paper and mess left all around the toilets, the undercover area broken into and furniture strewn around, faeces squashed into drinking fountains causing all of them to be replaced, shade sails damaged by teenagers using them as trampolines, soft-fall near the before/after school centre ripped up, panels on the maze in the Nature Playground pulled apart, security lights damaged, drug paraphernalia (bongs mainly) and alcoholic drink bottles and cans strewn around, items at the top of the flagpole and tiles broken because someone(s) have been stomping around on the roof. We had the junior and senior toilets freshly painted in the break and within one day had graffiti on one of the doors.

Sadly some of the damage, particularly in our toilets and in the early childhood (pre-primary) area has been caused by unsupervised children after school. At times parents are present and are oblivious as to what their children are doing whilst they are having a good chatter with friends.

The school has requested increased security support and for the installation of cctv.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2017

Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 11th December.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is imperative that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Newborough is a SunSmart School

Newborough Primary School has just been successful in renewing our SunSmart accreditation with the Cancer Council of Western Australia. This accreditation is now valid until 2019.

Below is our Sun Protection Policy

Sun Protection Policy

Environment

The structure of Newborough Primary School consists of large verandahs around the entire school along with a multi-purpose under cover area. A feature of the school’s grounds is many mature gum and tuart trees which provide enormous amounts of shade throughout the school’s playground areas. All sand pits in the all play areas are covered with permanent shade structures. The canteen has a large verandah where children can wait in line under a cover.

Physical Education lessons are held, where ever possible, in the shade or undercover area during the warm summer months in Terms 1 and 4. Assemblies are held undercover all year round. Shade structures are provided for students and spectators, as much as possible, during sporting events such as Athletics Carnivals. The wearing of protective clothing (including rashies, long sleeve shirts, t-shirts to cover the shoulders) is encouraged for athletic and swimming carnivals.

Behaviour

All students and staff must wear a broad brim or bucket style hat and school shirts consist of polo shirts with a collar, this is part of the school’s dress code. Hats are available from the P&C uniform shop.

Newborough Primary School has a policy of ‘No Hat No Play’ throughout the entire school year. This policy is enforced through the school’s Behaviour Management Policy. Students who forget or misplace their hat must stay on the verandah for the duration of play period. Students who do not have a hat for Physical Education sessions are encouraged to borrow one or they must sit out the session under a form of shade or sun protection. Staff and Parents at Newborough Primary School are strongly encouraged to wear broad brim hats while on duty or during Physical Education sessions in order to role model the importance of this health issue.

All classes have a large tub of sun screen which is freely available and encouraged for all students to apply for outside play, physical education lessons, outside excursions and athletics carnivals.

Curriculum

At all year levels (K to Yr 6) teachers plan and implement sun safe education integrated throughout the curriculum and in specific Health education lessons. The Physical Education teacher, at the school, covers sun safe issues both formally and informally throughout the whole school. Through newsletters, during assemblies and by student leader messages the school community is often reminded of our ‘No Hat No Play’ policy.

Kind regards,
Karen Tucknott
Deputy Principal

Room 12 Assembly

On Friday, September 22nd, Room 12, Year 3 presented the whole school assembly. The theme for our assembly was, “Music Through the Ages”. We had a lot of fun rehearsing for our assembly and our children in the class were eager to come in at lunchtimes to practice our dance moves! We presented dances, songs and information that incorporated music through the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. The Room 12 parents outdid themselves with the costumes they made and supplied! The children looked spectacular! Mrs Elissa Mac Neall, our Parent Rep. co-ordinated and organised the yummy morning tea, which will raise funds for our class. We thank all parents for the time and effort they put in to ensure our assembly was a great success. We invite you to view our office display, with artwork displayed from the assembly.

Lost Property

There is an increasing amount of lost property being left on school grounds, after hours and during school.

Please check the lost property rack, located outside the Uniform Shop, for missing items. Any items that are unlabelled and left over at the end of every two weeks are donated to the Uniform Shop for second hand resale or disposed of. We strongly suggest that your child’s property is clearly labelled to ensure it finds its way back to its rightful owner.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is www.safetyhousewa.org.au
