Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back

Welcome back everyone and a special welcome to our new students and their families. It’s great to be back at school for another exciting term. Our inclement weather continues to keep is on our toes. Beautiful one day, raining the next. I trust everyone had a pleasant and relaxing break. As always in term four there is a lot of action. This term we have Edudance. This program is part of our Arts and PE programs. It culminates with a performace at the student’s Presentation Night ceremony on Tuesday 12th December. During the next three weeks we will be conducting a variey of tests to see how much students have progressed. We also have all of our usual end of year events such as Kindy Expo, Year 6 Graduation, Volunteer Morning Tea and much more.

Student Placements For 2018

If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you please let us know in the office. This will assist us with planning for 2018.

As is always the case during Term 4, Newborough PS’s class organisation for the following year takes place. A number of considerations are taken into account based on improving student performance. These include: staffing numbers, resourcing, recommended class sizes, a balance of academic abilities within each class, the need to evenly distribute students with special needs (academically, socially and behaviourally), an even distribution of gender, the ability to work independently if placed in a multi-age class.

If you wish to communicate to us your child’s special needs please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 10th November (Week 5). Please note, this information will be deliberated when placing your child however, all preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.

The placement of children and the make-up of classes is made in consultation with teachers. It is not a parent decision. Every child is equally important. The final decision for placements rests with the Principal. If you have any queries or would like to discuss this please contact me to make an appointment.

It is unlikely that the structure of classes, their location and teacher will be presented at the end of this year. With our numbers constantly fluctuating it would be unfair to announce classes this year and then restructure when students return.

Staff Changes Term Four

Congratulations to Ms Nadine Murray, year 2 room 11 who has won a position with the Australian Curriculam, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) developing NAPLAN material. This is a huge achievement and no doubt will be very beneficial for Ms Murray’s personal growth and for insights and ideas for our school when she returns. Ms Murray’s appointment is a year contract. We are currently appointing Mr Ross Tolmie to take over the year 2’s for the remainder of the year. Welcome onboard Mr Tolmie.

Mr Stenhouse is away on long service leave for the first five weeks of term. Mrs Vicki Tennant will step into the office two days a week, Monday and Friday, to pick up some of Mr Stenhouses’s roles. Mrs Danni Canfora (nee Beaton) will be taking Mrs Tennant’s class on those days. Welcome aboard . Nice to have you back.

Ms Kris Williams has had eye surgery last week and will be away for a couple of weeks recovering. Mrs Coleen Dayman will be taking PE classes till Ms Williams returns.

We also welcome Mrs Kim Riseley as our new canteen manager. Kim replaces Mrs Patty Vallini who has taken up other employment. Thanks to Patty for all her hard work. She’ll be around for a week or two helping Kim settle in.

School Development Day Monday 9th October

We commenced the day with a World Teachers’ Day breakfast put on by the Admin team for all staff celebrating everyone as a teacher with our students. Staff engaged in a variety of professional learning and organisation activities on our first Monday back. Our Education Assistants and Front Office staff completed First Aid training. Teachers did workshops on our Positive Behaviour Support and critiqued our proposed new Business Plan 2018-2020.

Telethon 2017

Telethon 2017 is on this weekend. This event supports a variety of children’s charities and research. One of our parents, Ms Lisa Cutter was a former Telethon child in 1988 and was featured in a photograph in last weeks Sunday Times. If you are able please support Telethon.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2017

Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 11th December.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is imperative that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Good Standing Recognition 2017

As recognition for exemplary behaviour both in and out of the classroom throughout 2017, students will be presented with either a Gold or Silver Good Standing certificate in Week 10 if they have had no or only one referral to the administration office in Semester 2. Students who have been referred to the administration office on more than one occasion may not have earned any Good Standing certificate for the Semester.

Students who have earned two Gold Good Standing Certificates over the year will also be recognised with a Good Standing 2017 badge in the last week of school for their outstanding efforts and behaviour in 2017. However our Good Standing Policy also states that: “Students who have only been referred to the Administration once during the course of the year may still be eligible for Outstanding Behaviour recognition on an individual basis and this will be discussed by the Administration Team and Class Teacher and take into account the students behaviour after their indiscretion and the severity of the indiscretion.” Class teachers will inform the parents of students who are not receiving a Good Standing 2017 pin this year.

We congratulate all students who have demonstrated exemplary behaviour so far this year. This is the majority of our students and we appreciate their outstanding behaviour, effort and attitude towards their school and own schooling.

Booklists 2018

Newborough Primary School in conjunction with the P and C has selected Ziggies as our preferred supplier for your back to School requirements to make your Back to School 2018 shopping easier. The 2018 Booklists will be going home with your child in the next few days. We encourage all parents to support the P and C by purchasing the required items for next year through this fundraising activity. Please note that the items on the booklist have been carefully selected by the school to help with your child’s education for next year. It is imperative that students have all items if possible for the very beginning of the school year, in particular the student workbooks so programs can begin immediately. The workbook required for your child may vary across the year levels but they will be one, or all, of the following:

  • Soundwaves workbook
  • I-Maths workbook
  • Envision Workbook
  • Targeting Handwriting workbook

Newborough Primary School would sincerely like to acknowledge and thank Fiona Irwin for her organisation of the Booklist Fundraiser for the past 3 years. We welcome Karen Winton to the coordinator’s position this year and wish her all the best. If you have any queries regarding the booklists or payment options, please contact Karen Winton on 0400 805 567 or email kazmoid1@bigpond.com

Kind regards,

Karen Tucknott
Deputy Principal

Thank you

Lost Property

There is an increasing amount of lost property being left on school grounds, after hours and during school.

Please check the lost property rack, located outside the Uniform Shop, for missing items. Any items that are unlabelled and left over at the end of every two weeks are donated to the Uniform Shop for second hand resale or disposed of. We strongly suggest that your child’s property is clearly labelled to ensure it finds its way back to its rightful owner.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is available via the link below:
