Principal’s Introduction

Interschool Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to the Newborough Interschool Athletics team for a stunning performance at this years’ Interschool Carnival. Whilst it is pleasing to come away with a carnival win it was even more pleasing to see the sheer determination, courage and teamwork shown by our athletes and the wonderful sportsmanship displayed by all competitors from all schools during the two days. Ms Williams has provided a rundown of the carnival and champions later in the newsletter.

Ms Williams was a little nervous about hosting the carnival on our oval for the first time since Scarborough Senior High School closed and we were able to use their facilities. She did a superb job maximising our smaller oval and ensuring the schedule went smoothly. All the participating schools have expressed their appreciation to Ms Williams and our staff and parents who combined to ensure it was successful. A very BIG thank you to everyone for helping Newborough shine.

Netball Achievement

Congratulations to Tamaysha Blurton, year 6, and former student Elissa Parin year 7, who have been selected into the Perth Lions Cadets 12’s program for Netball. Once the winter season finishes several other Newborough Netball girls will participate in trials for the PNA squads. Best wishes to all involved.

STEM Class Award Year 3 Room 6 Mrs Farmer and Mrs Wimmer

Sophie Dallin

Sophie is a passionate and curious student who has excellent general knowledge in the STEM area. Her inquisitive nature and determination support her impressive inquiry skills. Sophie works hard to assimilate key concepts and understandings and can relate these to real life situations. She is determined to apply her learning to the world around her. Sophie independently formulates challenging questions and is able to research answers independently. She possesses excellent cooperative and group skills and is always willing to help others. Sophie is able to follow instructions with care to complete experiments and follow the design process. Her enthusiasm for STEM is to be commended.

Staff Changes

Mr Stenhouse will be taking five weeks of long service leave returning for the commencement of week six on 13th November. We will not be replacing Mr Stenhouse with a full time deputy but will offer opportunity for teacher leaders to undertake key roles at various times.

Mrs Eliza Keet, who takes year 5 room 13 each Wednesday for Mrs Boulos has won a full time position at Presbyterian Ladies College commencing term four. Mrs Boulos has kindly agreed to return to full time to minimise disruption and provide continuity to the class. We wish Mrs Keet all the very best in her new position.

Unwanted Visitors

Last weekend on Sunday we had considerable damage to our school by unwanted visitors. The damage included punching holes in our eves near room 11 and the junior toilets. Given the potential for hazardous substance this area was cordoned off and experts called in to do a clean up and take samples away for testing. Further repair work will be undertaken during the school holidays. The junior drink fountains were smeared in faeces and have all had to be replaced to ensure safety for the children. Other items were ripped off the walls and have had to be repaired. Our unwanted visitors were seen trampolining on the shade covers near the pre-primary, stomping over the roof pulling off the flus from classroom heaters and when challenged by parents gave a stream of abuse. The police and School Security were called but our visitors left before help arrived. The damage and invasion of the school has cost a considerable amount to repair, a great deal of grief for students, staff and parents and a lot of wasted administration time. Unfortunately we regularly encounter damage, graffiti and find evidence of antisocial behaviour on arrival to school after a weekend. Our gardener and cleaners are usually the first to encounter this and often have either repaired or fixed problems prior to when most of us arrive at school.

I have applied for CCTV to provide coverage of the quadrangle and parts of the Early Childhood area and requested that School Security and police increase their vigilance. The School Board’s Facilities Committee are exploring a range of safety and security options for the school. If you do see unwanted visitors please call the police on 131 444 and or School Security on 1800 177 777. Use your discretion about challenging intruders and taking photographs. We don’t want to put our community at further risk.

Works During Holiday Break

During the break the student toilets are scheduled to be painted and inspection and repair works to the roof above classrooms 9-12 following white ant damage. The majority of works will take place in the first week with cleaners returning to do a full spring clean in the second week.

Library News

Process for Overdue Library Books

  • If a student fails to return a library book an email will be sent home that day to parents as a reminder.
  • If the library book is then not returned by the following borrowing week, parents will be invoiced for the cost of the book immediately.
  • Students will not be able to borrow until the book is either returned or paid for.

We thank all students and parents for their assistance in helping all books be returned each week to the library to allow other students to also enjoy those books. A reminder that Library Bags are essential for students to care for our books. Our Newborough Primary School green reading book/library bags can be purchased from the Front Office for $6.95.

Please do not hesitate to either contact myself, Sharon Singleton or Deb Kirton on any questions in regards to our school library.

Speak up

We would like to congratulate Neve Gaunt, Stella McQuire and Adam Pollock, who were not only successful in advancing through to the first round of the finals in the Regional Speak Up Competition, but were also selected to advance through to the Preliminary Finals.

This is the first time all three of our representatives have been selected to go this next stage of the competition. Congratulations on a fine effort!

Julie Boulos

Lost Property

There is an increasing amount of lost property being left on school grounds, after hours and during school.

Please check the lost property rack, located outside the Uniform Shop, for missing items. Any items that are unlabelled and left over at the end of every two weeks are donated to the Uniform Shop for second hand resale or disposed of. We strongly suggest that your child’s property is clearly labelled to ensure it finds its way back to its rightful owner.

Late Collections of Students

Our staff are being increasingly asked to relay messages regarding the afternoon pick up of students at the end of the school day. Children should be informed at the beginning of their day, of their afternoon arrangements, for example attending afterschool care, family members/friends picking up. Early pick up of children disrupts the class and the learning of others.

Please note that due to the increased demand at the front office during this time, we may not be able to take messages to your children at the close of school however if parents are running late, the children are taken to the front office by their teachers and are supervised, and parents/guardians called to organise pickup, if necessary. Thank you for your consideration.

Absentees and Lates

If your child is going to be absent from or late to school, please advise us via SMS/email (preferred) or phone the school, advising us of the student’s name and room number, as well as the reason for their absence.

Keep the following details on hand for easy reference:

If your child is not in class by the time the roll is taken at 8.40am, please ensure that they come to the front office to receive a Late Pass before going to class, and have their ‘unexplained absence’ changed on the system. Our automated absences system sends out SMSs to parents of those students who have an ‘unexplained absence’ recorded for that day.

Japanese News

At the beginning of Term 3, students in Years 3-6 took part in calligraphy. They practised the Kanji (symbols borrowed from Chinese) called 'kin', meaning gold or money. These were the top samples from each year level (left to right, top to bottom) Rohan Yr 6, Luca Yr 5, Suzana Yr 4 and Skye Yr 3. They were entered into the Japanese Language Teachers Association of WA's, annual calligraphy contest. I am very proud to announce that Skye's work was judged as the best in the Yr 3 category. Omedetou (congratulations) Skye! For her winning entry she will receive a $20 iTunes gift voucher. The other students whose work was entered will receive a fudepen (paintbrush tip texta).

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website can be found below.
