Principal’s Introduction

High School Boundaries

With the State Government announcement for a new Inner City College (Planning Name) to be opened in 2020 and located in Subiaco at Kitchener Park there will be adjustments to high school boundaries. These boundaries have already been announced and are available on the Churchlands SHS website at the link below:

https://www.churchlands.wa.edu.au/new-students/intake-area

From the Newborough PS perspective the current high school boundaries remain in place till the end of the 2019 school year. The new boundary from 2020 allows parents within the Newborough PS catchment to choose between either Churchlands or Carine SHS’s. If you do not reside within the Newborough PS boundary your local high school will be determined by your residential address not your primary school enrolment.

If you have any queries about high school options please come and see me.

Churchlands SHS Open Mornings

Churchlands SHS will be conducting TWO open morning school tours specifically for parents of our feeder primary schools. In particular, we are targeting parents who have not yet had the opportunity to attend our presentation and tour.

  • The first tour is scheduled for Friday 1 September 2017, commencing at 9:20am is specifically for parents of Years 5 and 6 students.
  • Following Primary School feedback, the second tour will target your Years 1 to 4 parents and will be held on Friday 27 October 2017.

In-Term Swimming Lessons

In-term swimming lessons were very successful again this year despite some rather cold mornings. Thank you to parents for your support of this important program. The majority of students went up at least one grade level. The swimming teachers passed on their appreciation for the excellent behaviour of our students, the first-rate organisation and supervision by staff and most importantly the efforts of our students to listen and do their best. Special thanks to Miss Tucknott who organised and managed this complex event for our students. We have just received notification that our in-term swimming lessons for 2018 will be the last two weeks of the school year as we had last year. That fits in nicely with a Musical year.

Safe Parking – Pick up/Drop Off

I have been informed that several parents are regularly using the school’s service entry off Wilding Street to drop off and pick up students. Some even driving to the area near the large rubbish bins and then having to reverse all the way back down the drive. This is extremely dangerous.

Nude Food Day

The Sustainability Committee and Student Leaders are hosting a Nude Food Day on Tuesday 5th September. Nude food is food without packaging. There are a host of ideas below outlining how to pack a Nude Food lunchbox. This initiative is to raise awareness of rubbish from packaging in the school. Students will be discussing healthy and sustainable lunches. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing all the Nude Food!

Voluntary Contributions

Our School Board regularly reviews expenditure for Voluntary Contributions and Charges to ensure all monies are set and expended appropriately. Our Voluntary Charges are $60 per student. Every cent provided by parents goes directly into cost centres supporting:

Focus Area

$60

So Far

Examples of Where the contributions go

Reading Resources

Maths Resources

Monies provided through Voluntary Contributions greatly assist us to be able to properly resource key focus areas in the school. The majority of funding is provided through Government provisions from our One Line Budget allocation.

Our Voluntary Contributions collection rate at Newborough is very high demonstrating the wonderful support we have from parents and the difference we can make for our students.

If you have not yet paid your Voluntary Contribution we ask you to please consider doing so as soon as possible so we can purchase resources promptly to support your child’s learning now.

P&C Disco

The P&C Disco scheduled for Thursday 10th August has been moved to Monday 18th September.

Interschool Cross Country

Our Interschool Cross Country has been rescheduled for Thursday 7 September. Lets hope the weather is better than our original date. This is great news for our hard working cross country team who have put such a great effort into their training with Ms Williams.

Lost Property

There is an increasing amount of lost property being left on school grounds, after hours and during school.

Please check the lost property rack, located outside the Uniform Shop, for missing items. Any items that are unlabelled and left over at the end of every two weeks, are donated to the Uniform Shop for second hand resale or disposed of. We strongly suggest that your child’s property is clearly labelled to ensure it finds its way back to its rightful owner.

Late Collections of Students

Our staff are being increasingly asked to relay messages regarding the afternoon pick up of students at the end of the school day. Children should be informed at the beginning of their day, of their afternoon arrangements, for example attending afterschool care, family members/friends picking up. Early pick up of children disrupts the class and the learning of others.

Please note that due to the increased demand at the front office during this time, we may not be able to take messages to your children at the close of school however if parents are running late, the children are taken to the front office by their teachers and are supervised, and parents/guardians called to organise pickup, if necessary. Thank you for your consideration.

Absentees and Lates

If your child is going to be absent from or late to school, please advise us via SMS/email (preferred) or phone the school, advising us of the student’s name and room number, as well as the reason for their absence.

Keep the following details on hand for easy reference:

If your child is not in class by the time the roll is taken at 8.40am, please ensure that they come up to the front office to receive a Late Pass before going to class, and have their ‘unexplained absence’ changed on the system. Our automated absences system sends out SMSs to parents of those students who have an ‘unexplained absence’ recorded for that day.

Positive Behaviour Support Programme - Logo Competition

Competition Winner:

Congratulations to Tahni Blatchford of year 2 who won our school PBS logo competition. Tahni created a logo which encapsulated Newborough and our 4 new values, RESPECT, TEAMWORK, KINDNESS and CHALLENGE YOURSELF. Tahni will be working with a graphic designer and her logo will be used on posters around the school…stay tuned! Congratulations also go to Noah Blakeney, Jayde Millea and Ava Daebritz as we will be using elements of their design in our final logo as well.

Thank you to everyone who entered the logo competition. We were overwhelmed with entries which were all at a very high standard.

Mrs O’Dea

Final Logo

Last term, as part of the Positive Behaviour Support programme that we are currently developing at Newborough Primary School, we held a logo competition. The design of the logo was to be representative of Newborough Primary. We had a huge amount of entries from children from all year groups and many fantastic ideas, making our job of choosing a winner very difficult. After much discussion, we narrowed the field down to the following 4 finalists:

Noah Blakeney, Year 3, Room 6
Ava Daebritz, Year 5, Room 14
Jayde Millea, Year 5, Room 13
Tahni Blatchford, Year 2, Room 4

Tahni’s design was chosen as the winning entry but we also included elements of the other 3 finalist’s designs. The beautiful trees that dominate our school grounds, our multicultural student population, the hilltop that the school sits upon and our 4 chosen values of ‘Kindness’, ‘Team Work’, ‘Respect’ and ‘Challenge Yourself’ are all represented in the final logo. A big thank you must also go to Kobe Koerber for applying the finishing touch to the children’s work.

Languages Week (Week4)

As part of Languages Week, Week 4, Hugh (Year 6), submitted a bilingual eBook to the Modern Language Teachers Association of WA competition.

His book was chosen as one of the top three in the Year 4-6 category. Good luck to Hugh. The winner will be announced next Wednesday.

Stem Week

In Week 5 (STEM Week) the Japanese Room will be open and parents are invited to view their child's work or just say 'Hi', before school from 8.40-9.15 and after school from 3.00-3.30 on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Why don't you drop in for a cup of ocha (green tea)?

I am looking forward to meeting some more of the NPS parents.

Library News

Process for Overdue Library Books

  • If a student fails to return a library book an email will be sent home that day to parents as a reminder.
  • If the library book is then not returned by the following borrowing week, parents will be invoiced for the cost of the book immediately.
  • Students will not be able to borrow until the book is either returned or paid for.

We thank all students and parents for their assistance in helping all books be returned each week to the library to allow other students to also enjoy those books. A reminder that Library Bags are essential for students to care for our books. Our Newborough Primary School green reading book/library bags can be purchased from the Front Office.

Please do not hesitate to either contact myself, Sharon Singleton or Deb Kirton on any questions in regards to our school library.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is found in the link below:
