Principal’s Introduction
Welcome Back
Welcome back everyone and special welcome to our new families and new staff.
Ms Sarah Lydon has been appointed as year 1/2 teacher replacing Mrs O’Dea who is on parenting leave. We all look forward to hearing some great news shortly from the O’Dea’s. We also have Ms Ruth Ames who will be teaching Technology and Science in junior classes on Wednesdays. This has been funded for the remainder of the year from saving in not replacing Miss Tucknott as she takes a few weeks long service leave commencing this Thursday. She returns for the start of week 5. This term we have two Notre Dame Intern practice teachers, Ms Rebecca Lane in Mrs Tennant’s PP/Year 1 class and Mr Ross Tolmie in Miss Kos’s year 3/4 class.
As usual this term is action packed with a range of activities including swimming lessons, P&C Disco and Australian Quiz and Games Night, Science Week, WA Government Schools Music Society concert, athletics and interschool cross country carnivals, the year 6 Enterprise Fete and Kindy Pizza Play days.
Successful NAIDOC Week
Congratulations to all involved in the range of activities supporting NAIDOC Week at the end of last term. The joint assembly with Ms Phillip’s year sixes and Mrs Hughes’s year two classes was exceptional, as was the Aboriginal Art displays all around the school coordinated by Mrs Holmes.
We like to celebrate all families and students, staff and community members who make our school such a great place to learn and be a part of.
Next year planning is already well under way to acknowledge and celebrate our multicultural diversity during Harmony Week. Ideas put forward so far include dressing in costumes, multicultural luncheon, projects on countries around the world. Do you have any great ideas? Let us know.
Chaplain Day Changes
Miss Ali Dee our much esteemed Chaplain will now be with us each Tuesday and Friday rather than Tuesday and Thursday.
Enrolments for 2017 Year 7 (High Schools) and Kindergarten (Newborough)
Please note that enrolments for year sixes going into high school (Churchlands and Carine SHS) as year sevens in 2018 and Kindergarten expressions of interest are due by Friday 28th July.
YouthCARE Treasure Hunters Club
YouthCARE are seeking ‘expressions of Interest’ from parents and students to see if establishing Treasure Hunters Kids Club is viable for Newborough Primary School. If you are interested read the description and then respond by completing the ‘Expression of Interest’ form and returning it to school by Wednesday 2nd August. If the program goes ahead it will be a voluntary program run after school by trained and qualified volunteers from YouthCARE.
The School Board has endorsed this program and welcomes other like organisations who may wish to run cultural or religious based programs to approach the principal. Each is considered on merit as to whether it provides a valuable service to our school community.

Deputy News
In-Term Swimming 2017
As this newsletter goes to print, students are currently involved in their second week of In-Term swimming for 2017. The feedback from the swimming instructors has been that of praise of our student’s organisation and good behaviour during the two weeks.
We would like to thank all parents for their support of the programme, especially as we are in the middle of winter and for help with students being organised for their lessons. While each school has the opportunity to submit their swimming preference times into the Department of Education, the allocations of swimming times is based on a roster to be fair to all schools and thus our lessons times alternate from summer to winter biannually.
We have just received our 2018 allocation for In-term swimming which will be the last two weeks of Term 4 again. This is a great time as it allows students to continue to develop their swimming skills directly before the long Christmas holidays.
Edu-Dance 2017
Notes will be going home this week for our annual dance programme for all students from kindergarten to Year 6. This year we have engaged the services of the Edu-Dance programme for Weeks 1-9 of Term 4, with students performing their learnt dances at the Presentation Night on Tuesday 12th December at the Karrinyup Sports Hall.
The programme is $30 per student. Payment must be made in full by Wednesday 20th September (15th September is the last day for internet banking) for students to be able to participate. We urge all parents to contact the front office to develop a payment plan immediately, if you are experiencing any difficulties paying. Please remember to sign and return the permission form before the due date also.
Please do not hesitate to contact Karen Tucknott if you have any queries about the programme.
STEM Week (Week 5, Term 3)
STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
Newborough Primary alternates their focus on different parts of the curriculum each year. Last year we had a focus on Book Week in Term 3. This year, we will be celebrating Science Week through focussing on all things STEM in Week 5 this term.
There will be a range of activities throughout the week and currently teachers are working on a STEM project with their students based around the national Science Week theme of ‘Future Earth’. As ‘Future Earth’ focusses on the many facets of sustainability, teachers are incorporating the Cross-curriculum priorities in the Western Australian Curriculum into their projects.
To view the projects, family members are invited to a classroom open morning from 8.40-9.15am on Thursday 17th August. Students will be able to show you their work and many teachers may organise for you to participate in some STEM activities with your child at that time.
But wait. . there’s more!
As part of STEM Week, we would also like to invite students to a STEM Themed Dress-Up day on Friday 18th August. We would like all students to wear any type of costume to do with anything, famous person or occupation in the STEM field. This could be dressing up as a robot, gamer, vet, nurse, doctor, engineer, astronaut, astronomer, palaeontologist, Einstein, architect, chemist, geologist, engineer, food scientist, scientist, mathematician, biologist, archaeologist, robotic engineer, computer programmer, computer engineer, surgeon, zoologist, video game designer…
Students participating in athletics sports practice on this day will need to bring their faction sports clothes to change into at an appropriate time. However, if your child is not involved in sports on this day, they are welcome to stay in their dress-up costume.
Attached to the newsletter are the posters placed on teacher’s classroom doors for you to print out to know what is happening in STEM Week.
Please do not hesitate to contact Karen Tucknott for any further queries.
Year 5, Room 13 Assembly
On Friday, 16th of June, the Year 5 students from Room 13, performed their assembly based on the theme of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The script looked at some of the more important inventions over time and mimicked the show “Shark Tank”. Many laughs were had, particularly for Harry Verhoef, who played the part of Pneumonia, and was betrothed to one of the unfortunate inventors and Charlie Brunton, who played the part of a “Shark”. In demonstrating how he made his millions designing boutique underwear, Charlie threw three pairs into the unsuspecting audience. The inventor of the Fidgett Spinner was also performed. Finally, the assembly concluded that the best invention of all was the human brain and we wondered who might come up with the next amazing invention.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.
The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder
INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL
COMMUNITY?
IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.
The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.
You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.
This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.
Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.
We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website via the link below.
