Principal’s Introduction

Happy Holidays

After such a busy term everyone is ready for a good break to recharge batteries, overcome illness and be ready for another exciting term at Newborough PS. I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff, parents, students and volunteers for all your great contributions to the school throughout the term. We have been very fortunate to have had eight practice teachers from Notre Dame and Edith Cowan Universities. With the assistance of their host teachers they have all done particularly well and made a great contribution to the school. It is beaut to see such a fine group of young teachers coming into our schools in the near future. Next term Ms Rebecca Lane, in Mrs Tennant’s class, and Mr Ross Tolmie in Miss Kos’ class will be doing their final internship practice. We welcome them to our school.

I wish everyone a very safe, enjoyable and restful holiday break and look forward to all the fantastic things like Science Week, athletics and the Enterprise Fete just to whet your appetite for term 3.

Nature Playground Opening – Coolungar Marlak Kadadjiny (Children Bush Learning)

On Monday we had the official opening of the new Nature Playground. The opening coincided with the commencement of NAIDOC Week. All classes sat on the grass in the natural amphitheatre in front of the playground. Tamaysha and Jerome started procedures with a traditional ‘Welcome to Country’ followed by the choir beautifully singing the Gina Williams song ‘Wanjoo, Wanjoo’ or ‘Welcome, Welcome’ song lead by Mrs Holmes and accompanied by Craig Hewitt on keyboard. A short speech acknowledging the history, purpose and all those who made the Nature Playground what it is today was followed by Noongar elder Mr Neville Collard who entertained the mob with his stories and Noongar knowledge. He followed this with a traditional smoking ceremony, helped by Jasper, with all the children moving around the smoke and fire. It was quite spectacular as the playground was officially named Coolungar (Children) Marlak (Bush) Kadadjiny (Learning). Of course the playground was then open for business and all participants enjoyed a damper and Billie tea afternoon tea.

Many thanks to Mandy Morgan, Kobe Koerber, Louise Layton, James Holmes and all the Mums who helped out on the day. It was a spectacular opening befitting such a valued new adventure for our school.

After School Arrangements

Newborough is one of few schools that allow play before and after school. Before school, from 8:15am the deputies and I provide duty of care in the quadrangle area and playground in front of Music/Art rooms as children arrive and play and teachers prepare for the day.

After school there is no additional staff supervision and it is up to parents to provide this supervision for their own child/ren. As always our school rules apply including no bikes/scooters in the quadrangle or on verandahs, climbing on the railings, putting sticks in the sandpits, taking sand out of the sandpits (and making sand cakes in the sinks), no dogs in K/P, quadrangle or sandpits and in other areas on a lead with an adult (see school signs) etc.

In recent times there have been issues with several children playing after school without adequate parent supervision. Please ensure you can sight your child/ren at all times, for their safety.

I have asked the cleaners to keep the junior set of student toilets open till 3:30pm or a little later if there are activities such as organised netball. Once the toilets are cleaned and locked they don’t open again till the next morning. This includes the Kindergarten and Pre-primary.

The children have been reminded that they are to go straight home or be with parents if they are staying after school. If a parent is late the children are to come and wait in the front office where we can call the parents and supervise safely. Children are not to wait in other areas of the school grounds or road verge around the school.

Amazing Students at Newborough

Congratulations to Ashleigh Mackenzie who represented Western Australia at the recent gymnastics competition in Brisbane, Queensland. Ashleigh has just returned. She achieved a very creditable third place in the overall competition. What a fantastic achievement!

We have also just found out that two of our boys, Conor Smith and Jamie Mackenzie (Yes, Ashleigh’s brother) were both chosen as one of five finalists for the pages they illustrated for the Therapy Focus Art competition. They will be on display at Whitfords shopping centre 1-6 July, Carousel 7-12 July and Innaloo 13-16 July if you wish to have a look. The judges will then pick a finalist from the five for each page before being published. Go boys!

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

Newborough Primary School will be celebrating NAIDOC Week in the Week 10 of this term. This links to the Cross-curricula priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.

In addition to regular classroom activities embedded in the curriculum, we will also hold NAIDOC week celebrations in the final week of Term 2. We will provide students with opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding by engaging with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The theme for 2017 is ‘Our Languages Matter’. The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations. It aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

When: Term 2 Week 1

What classrooms will do:

  • NAIDOC assembly: Mrs Hughes and Ms Phillips classes will combine to present a NAIDOC week assembly on the last Friday of term.
  • The Aboriginal flag will be flown throughout the week.

Library News

Process for Overdue Library Books

  • If a student fails to return a library book an email will be sent home that day to parents as a reminder.
  • If the library book is then not returned by the following borrowing week, parents will be invoiced for the cost of the book immediately.
  • Students will not be able to borrow until the book is either returned or paid for.

We thank all students and parents for their assistance in helping all books be returned each week to the library to allow other students to also enjoy those books. A reminder that Library Bags are essential for students to care for our books. Our Newborough Primary School green reading book/library bags can be purchased from the Front Office.

Please do not hesitate to either contact myself, Sharon Singleton or Deb Kirton on any questions in regards to our school library.

Speak Up

Last week the school held its seventh annual Speak Up finals, with every child from years 3 -6, writing and delivering their own speeches to their class. This year, to coincide with our STEM focus, we asked that these speeches be based around Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. As each year passes, the children become more adept and skilled with their speaking. Their ability to stand confidently before an audience and recite their speech has grown and we are all in awe of their skills and ability.

We would like to congratulate every student on their efforts with their speeches in 2017. We would also like to acknowledge the following class finalists, who were selected to present their speeches to the school:

Year 3

Noah Blakeney: Volcanoes
CJ Morris: Running

Year 3 & 4 Excursion

On Wednesday the 14th and Thursday the 15th of June, the Year 3 and 4 students from rooms 12, 5, 6 and 7 went on an excursion to Brownes Dairy in Balcatta. They went to learn about food production as an introduction for their STEM project next term.

On arrival students watched a short video about the dairy process, they split off into two groups to participate in different activities. One activity was to become a food critic in the test kitchen, where they sampled yoghurt and new milk products. They conducted an experiment where they mixed warm skim milk and vinegar to create whey. Another activity was to tour the factory and view the production of Brownes products. At the conclusion of the tour, students got to milk Jersey the cow, which was an interesting experience for them all. Students were lucky enough to receive a gift bag and a Brownes sample product.

Thank you to Farmer Damian and Brownes Dairy for such an enlightening excursion!

Here are some comments from the students:

"Brownes Dairy was great!" by Noah.
"We tried some 0% sugar yoghurt and I didn't like it, it was too sour!" by Jaxon.
"Best excursion ever!" Room 5.
"My favourite part was in the milk factory, watching them put milk into cartons and stickers on the cartons" By Yujin.
"I learned about Pasteurising means to take all the bad bacteria away" By Suri.
"Then we milked the cow, it felt like a sausage!" by Archie and the majority of students!
"I got to milk a cow that was my first time. I had so much fun!" by Candice.'

Join the fun and host a Japanese Student

Sun 6 to Fri 11 August 2017 (5 nights)

Newborough Primary School will have a visit from a group of Japanese students travelling with their mothers from Seiha English Academy, Japan. Exchange visits are a wonderful way to increase cultural awareness and develop cross-cultural communication skills for all participants. It’s rewarding and fun for families to experience another culture, share their experiences learning about Australia and form international friendships.

We are looking for families who are willing to host a student and mother pair for 5 nights:

  • Apart from friendship and the opportunity to participate in family life, host families only need to provide a bed and meals (breakfast, dinner and packed lunches) for the guests.
  • There are 3 boys (aged 9, 10 & 10) and 3 girls (aged 7, 9 & 9) in this group.
  • Shoji Australia offer 24-hour bilingual support to visitors and host families.
  • The students will start and end their day at Newborough Primary School having English lessons and participating in school life on school days (Monday to Thursday).
  • The group arrives at school by charter bus at 2:45pm on Sunday and depart school at 9am on Friday.

  • Families will receive a payment to cover the visitors’ living expenses.

Please support this rewarding school program. It may seem like a long way off but please register now so progress can be made towards the visit.

Please fill in a confidential application form at the link below or contact Shoji Australia for more information

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is at the link below:
