Principal’s Introduction

Nature Playground Opening – Coolungar Marlak Kadadjiny (Children Bush Learning)

The official opening of our new Nature Playground will take place on Monday 26th June with a whole school assembly in the amphitheatre area next to the playground. If the weather is inclement we will move to the assembly area. The opening will commence at 2:15pm and conclude at 2:55pm with children dismissed from the playground. The format for the opening includes Welcome to Country, a song by the choir, thank you’s and acknowledgement, a smoking ceremony and talk about the indigenous heritage of the area and importance of natural play by Mr Neville Collard, the opening, naming and planting of a banksia Menziesii (our school emblem).

Following the opening ceremony guests are welcome to share afternoon tea at the Nature Playground. There will be supervision for children at the Nature Playground till 3:30pm and then children are expected to be under the care of parents.

Please refer to article below for details.

Art - Our Language Matters Exhibition

In art students have been busy learning about aspects of Aboriginal languages and culture and then representing their ideas in creative art work.

This learning is part of our celebrations around NAIDOC Week. Student’s art work will be on display for all to see after our NAIDOC assembly on Friday 30th June around the school from 9:40-10:40am.

Come and share the student’s great creative artwork and learning.

Please refer to article below for details.

Parenting Leave – Mrs O’Dea

Mrs Bree O’Dea and husband Greg are thrilled to announce that they are due to have a baby later this year. Mrs O’Dea will commence leave for the start of term three. Ms Sarah Lydon will take the class for the remainder of the year. Mrs O’Dea will be recognised for her great teaching and contributions to the school at the NAIDOC assembly on Friday 30th June by staff, students and parents.

Parent reps from Room 4, Leyla Brunton and Bernie Canney encourage parents who have had a child in Mrs O’Dea’s class to come along to the assembly to help celebrate and say farewell, at least for the time being. They are putting together a farewell gift for those wishing to contribute.

Contributions can be dropped off at the front office or to Leyla or Bernie.

Staff Professional Learning

All teaching staff trekked down to Fremantle on Friday 2nd June to participate in a Curriculum Leadership Conference run by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA WA) the custodians of the Western Australian Curriculum.

Having our whole teaching staff attend was real coop as it offered the opportunity for our staff to be right up to date with the latest curriculum updates and access to moderated work samples and assessment methods.

It also provided a terrific opportunity for our staff to network with each other and school leaders.

Thank you to Miss Tucknott who showed great vision and tenacity with organisers to allow our staff to attend. It was a really valuable day that all students will benefit from.

Facilities Sub-Committee

The School Boards’ Facilities Sub-Committee met for the first time on Thursday 1st June. This committee is charged with looking at and advocating for facility improvements with two main focus areas. Safety and Security and School Infrastructure. This committee makes recommendations and reports to the Board.

As an inclusive group the sub-committee includes parents Jason Davis and Scott Hiscock, staff members Sharon Singleton, Karen Tucknott and Nat Kos, our School Patron, Ian Sherborne and Board members Matt Gaunt, Irene Froyland, Ian Pollock and John Worthy. The committee elected Jason Davis as chair and Nat Kos as secretary.

The committee determined that its initial focus will be on Safety and Security whilst developing a longer term approach to improvements in school facilities.

Initial strategies include inviting safety and security experts from the Department of Education to review our site and provide advice to the committee on safety and security. John Marrapodi (Strategic Asset Planning) and David Muir (Facilities Program Delivery) will attend the next meeting on Thursday 29th June. The committee will also undertake awareness sessions to inform the school community of the safety and security issues faced in our unique school location and gather further evidence.

This testing is for current Year 6 students to enter Churchlands SHS in 2018 who reside in the Churchlands SHS local intake area.

Changes to Secondary Schooling – Western Suburbs Announcement

The State Government has announced its decision to build a new local intake secondary school, Inner City College (planning name), on Kitchener Park in Subiaco.

The inner city has been identified as the best location for a new school as it is at the heart of the population growth in this area.

The new school will have world class facilities for students from Years 7 to 12 and be built for 2000 students to ease student enrolment pressures at several schools in the inner and western suburbs. Inner City College will also have a Gifted and Talented academic program.

The announcement means the local intake areas for Churchlands Senior High School, Mount Lawley Senior High School and Shenton College have been amended to create a local intake area for the new Inner City College.

These will be released shortly and will come into effect from the start of 2020 when Inner City College opens with its first cohort of Year 7 students.

I would like to reassure you that if your child is enrolled at their local secondary school in 2019, they will be able to complete their schooling there. They will not have to change schools.

Additionally, if you currently live within a school’s local intake area and your local intake area changes to Inner City College you will have the choice to enrol your children at your current local intake school or Inner City College.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2017

In the past few newsletters and teachers’ own classroom newsletters, Newborough Primary School has been advertising that your child’s Semester 1 report will be delivered electronically via email at the end of this term in Week 10 and NOT be a printed copy as per in the past.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

Very few parents in the school do not have an email address. However, it is imperative that you ensure your email address is correct with the school for the purposes of receiving your child/children’s reports.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

As part of Newborough Primary School’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, we have organised for an Indigenous performer to come to school on Wednesday 21st June. Dion will share tales and artifacts from his culture, teaching students about the different traditions of both Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal storytelling, song and dance.

The cost per child is $5.00 to be paid by Friday 16th June please.

Newborough Primary School will be celebrating NAIDOC Week in the Week 10 of this term. This links to the Cross-curricula priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.

In addition to regular classroom activities embedded in the curriculum, we will also hold NAIDOC week celebrations in the final week of Term 2. We will provide students with opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding by engaging with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The theme for 2017 is ‘Our Languages Matter’. The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations. It aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

When: Term 2 Week 10

What classrooms will do:

  • Incursion: Dion Drummond (indigenous dancer and storyteller). Week 9: Wednesday 21st June 12-1pm (K-2) and 1.40-2.40pm (3-6).
  • Arts: Mrs Holmes will incorporate indigenous art activities into her music lessons Weeks 6-9. The product of these lessons will be displayed in the undercover area for the NAIDOC assembly.
  • NAIDOC assembly: Mrs Hughes and Ms Phillips classes will combine to present a NAIDOC week assembly on the last Friday of term.
  • The Aboriginal flag will be flown throughout the week.

Library News!

NEW Library books and stands:

Thankyou, Newborough P and C!

Newborough Primary School would love to thank our P and C for their donation of $5000 towards new resources for our school library. We are now in the process of purchasing a new library turnstile and many more fiction books and series for students.

We will also be purchasing some pre-kindy reading books as we plan to open the library one morning a week for toddlers and our early childhood students beginning sometime in Term 3.

We were also fortunate to have money from the P and C to purchase books on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). This money has already been spent on an amazing collection of beautiful and though provoking books designed to stimulate student thinking. In particular, my two favourite books from what we have ordered are What do you do with a Problem? By Kobi Yamada and On a Beam of a Light: The Story of Albert Einstien by Jennifer Berne. These will be available in the coming weeks once these books have been accessioned into the library.

LIBRARY BOOK BORROWING – Dates for all library books to be returned by for Term 2

For this term, students will be able to borrow library books from our school library up to and including Friday 23rd June (the end of Week 9).

However, all library books (including those borrowed on Friday 23rd June) will need to be returned on MONDAY 26th June regardless of when they were borrowed the previous week. This means some students will NOT have had the books for a full week. However, this allows the school to ensure all books are back before the end of the term.

This is important due to the large number of books that are either not returned or lost, in particular over the school holidays. At the time of writing this for the newsletter we currently have approximately 120 OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS ACROSS THE SCHOOL from Kindergarten to Year 6. This is just over a ¼ of the school population that has either not returned their books either from last week or over the past few weeks.

The time taken to follow up and constantly remind students and families to return overdue items is substantial and lost books means a cost in both time and money to the school to organise replacements and billing to parents for books not returned after many weeks. As such, the school is changing the process for overdue books effective immediately.

Process for Overdue Library Books

  • If a student fails to return a library book an email will be sent home that day to parents as a reminder.
  • If the library book is then not returned by the following borrowing week, parents will be invoiced for the cost of the book immediately.
  • Students will not be able to borrow until the book is either returned or paid for.

We thank all students and parents for their assistance in helping all books be returned each week to the library to allow other students to also enjoy those books. A reminder that Library Bags are essential for students to care for our books. Our Newborough Primary School green reading book/library bags can be purchased from the Front Office.

Please do not hesitate to either contact myself, Sharon Singleton or Deb Kirton on any questions in regards to our school library.

Kind regards

Karen Tucknott

Nature Play Opening

Japanese

I just realised that although I have met many of you, I have not formally introduced myself.

My name is Andrea Kurasho. I lived in Japan for eleven years, working, studying and travelling to many varied and exciting places. When I returned from Japan I decided to switch careers and become a Japanese teacher, and have been teaching for ten years now. I am excited to be teaching at Newborough Primary School and introducing your children to the language and culture of Japan.

I am here on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and am happy for you to drop in any time after school on these days. You will find me next to Science in the demountable classroom. I am looking forward to meeting you.

Join the fun and host a Japanese Student

Sun 6 to Fri 11 August 2017 (5 nights)

Newborough Primary School will have a visit from a group of Japanese students travelling with their mothers from Seiha English Academy, Japan. Exchange visits are a wonderful way to increase cultural awareness and develop cross-cultural communication skills for all participants. It’s rewarding and fun for families to experience another culture, share their experiences learning about Australia and form international friendships.

We are looking for families who are willing to host a student and mother pair for 5 nights:

  • Apart from friendship and the opportunity to participate in family life, host families only need to provide a bed and meals (breakfast, dinner and packed lunches) for the guests.
  • There are 3 boys (aged 9, 10 & 10) and 3 girls (aged 7, 9 & 9) in this group.
  • Shoji Australia offer 24-hour bilingual support to visitors and host families.
  • The students will start and end their day at Newborough Primary School having English lessons and participating in school life on school days (Monday to Thursday).
  • The group arrives at school by charter bus at 2:45pm on Sunday and depart school at 9am on Friday.
  • Families will receive a payment to cover the visitors’ living expenses.

Please support this rewarding school program. It may seem like a long way off but please register now so progress can be made towards the visit.

Please fill in a confidential application form via the link below or contact Shoji Australia for more information

Kind regards,

Andrea Kurasho

NAIDOC WEEK

Can you help?

For our NAIDOC week Art Exhibition in week 10 we are looking for:

  • Plastic Shopping bags (brought to the music room at any time)
  • Volunteers with a sewing machine to help construct our art work at home (week 9)

Please see Mrs Holmes in the music room before school if you can be of assistance! Thank you.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is available via the link below:
