Principal’s Introduction

Independent Public School Review Findings

The school has recently received our 2017 Department of Education Services’ Review Findings following the Independent Review conducted during term one. Our reviewers, Mr Tom Campbell and Dr Susan Hall met with a broad range of school community members including staff, parents, students and the board to verify the data and information provided by the school and Department of Education. Shortly a copy of the review will be posted on the school’s website and Department of Education Schools Online website for Newborough Primary School.

This is the second review since we became an Independent Public School in 2013. The focus for this review was our achievements against the Business Plan 2015-2017 and the Delivery and Performance Agreement (see Board website for these documents). As a school we were very pleased with the thoroughness of the review, the understanding and diligence shown by the reviewers and the quality of their constructive feedback in the report. Our school continues to improve to provide the best learning and care for our students and the school community and continually looks for ways to improve.

The following outlines our Areas of strength and Areas for improvement. In part this will guide some of our future planning as we build a new Business plan for the period 2018-2020.

Business Plan

Areas of strength

  • The commitment of the leadership team and staff to effect positive changes in the development of the new business plan.

Areas for improvement

  • Focus on setting SMART targets which are realistic and challenging
  • Include targets which take account of varied student cohorts (e.g. English as an additional language or dialect, gifted and talented, students at educational risk).
  • Specify within the targets what is to be improved, how this will be measured and when.

Teaching and Learning

Areas of strength

  • The distributed leadership model which has enhanced effective collaboration between staff and the implementation of best practice strategies across the school.
  • Strong curriculum leadership which has facilitated commitment to whole-school evidence-based approaches
  • Rigorous analysis of data with a focus on relevant action required.

Area for improvement

  • Develop SMART targets to ensure data collection and analysis which will facilitate informed decisions being made in respect to quality teaching and effective programs and processes

Student Performance Monitoring

Areas of strength

  • The Curriculum Expectations 2017 and other accountability documents. These provide direction for the whole-school approach to assessment, monitoring and reporting student progress.
  • The in-depth analysis of individual student performance and progress that is then used to improve teaching practices and student learning.
  • The highly collaborative staff approach to assessment, monitoring and reporting of student progress

Program Delivery

Areas of strength

  • The collaborative leadership and communication by the principal and deputy principals.
  • The positive, purposeful and inclusive school culture
  • The extensive pastoral care program supported by the school and parents.
  • The thoroughly researched, measured and collaborative approach to whole-school initiatives in pedagogy and behaviour.

Area for improvement

  • Ensure staff have undertaken the mandated Protective Behaviours professional learning.

Resourcing and Support

Areas of strength

  • The workforce plan and targeted recruitment of staff has produced a stable staff with the expertise to achieve the business plan targets.
  • The reciprocal support between teachers and parents.
  • The intracommunity support between parents.
  • The careful budget management aligned to the business plan.

Areas for improvement

  • Enhance digital technologies with the provision of additional ICT hardware for staff and students to access.
  • Further investigate strategies for ensuring the problem of after-school and weekend damage is minimised. This may include continued discussion on the issue of fencing.

School Board

Areas of strength

  • The positive relationships that exist between the board, the school leadership team and staff and the support it has provided to facilitate school improvement.
  • The proactive approach the board has taken in diligently carrying out its responsibilities in meeting the requirements of the DPA and its contribution in the decision-making process in a variety of other relevant contexts.

Annual Report 2016

Our Annual Report 2016 is now available on the school’s website and the Department’s Schools Online website for Newborough Primary School. This document provides a summary of achievements, actions, and future directions for our planning in 2017. Printed copies are available from the front office.

Join the fun and host a Japanese Student Sun 6 to Fri 11 August 2017 (5 nights)

Newborough Primary School will have a visit from a group of Japanese students travelling with their mothers from Seiha English Academy, Japan. Exchange visits are a wonderful way to increase cultural awareness and develop cross-cultural communication skills for all participants. It’s rewarding and fun for families to experience another culture, share their experiences learning about Australia and form international friendships.

We are looking for families who are willing to host a student and mother pair for 5 nights:

  • Apart from friendship and the opportunity to participate in family life, host families only need to provide a bed and meals (breakfast, dinner and packed lunches) for the guests.
  • There are 3 boys (aged 9, 10 & 10) and 3 girls (aged 7, 9 & 9) in this group.
  • Shoji Australia offer 24-hour bilingual support to visitors and host families.
  • The students will start and end their day at Newborough Primary School having English lessons and participating in school life on school days (Monday to Thursday).
  • The group arrives at school by charter bus at 2:45pm on Sunday and depart school at 9am on Friday.
  • Families will receive a payment to cover the visitors’ living expenses.

Please support this rewarding school program. It may seem like a long way off but please register now so progress can be made towards the visit.

Please fill in a confidential application form at the link below or contact Shoji Australia for more information

Primary Extension And Challenge (PEAC) Testing Year Four

The Regional Office has advised that PEAC testing has been delayed this year. It is hoped that the testing will occur either late term two or early in term three. This testing identifies students at the top end of the gifted and talented spectrum eligible to be offered a place in the program that is run from Yuluma PS. It also provides valuable information on each child to assist the school with school based programs. Mr Stenhouse coordinates the test at our school.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2017

In the past few newsletters and teachers’ own classroom newsletters, Newborough Primary School has been advertising that your child’s Semester 1 report will be delivered electronically via email at the end of this term in Week 10 and NOT be a printed copy as per in the past.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

Very few parents in the school do not have an email address. However, it is imperative that you ensure your email address is correct with the school for the purposes of receiving your child/children’s reports.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Kind regards,

Karen Tucknott
Deputy Principal

In addition to regular classroom activities embedded in the curriculum, we will also hold NAIDOC week celebrations in the final week of Term 2. We will provide students with opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding by engaging with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The theme for 2017 is ‘Our Languages Matter’. The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations. It aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

When: Term 2 Week 10

What classrooms will do:

  • Incursion: Dion Drummond (indigenous dancer and storyteller). Week 9: Wednesday 21st June 12-1pm (K-2) and 1.40-2.40pm (3-6).
  • Arts: Mrs Holmes will incorporate indigenous art activities into her music lessons Weeks 6-9. The product of these lessons will be displayed in the undercover area for the NAIDOC assembly.
  • NAIDOC assembly: Mrs Hughes and Ms Phillips classes will combine to present a NAIDOC week assembly on the last Friday of term.

P&C News

Well it was a busy first term with our election day fundraiser, Moort Boodja, the walk and ride to school day, the Show Your True Colours Day and the Movie Night keeping everyone busy!! It looked like the kids and adults enjoyed helping out and participating in all of these events. The Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall and Moort Boodja helped raise money for the school while the other events just got the school and local community together to enjoy some fun times.

Second term has started a bit slower (thank goodness!) but with plenty still to come in the year.

At our last P&C meeting we had some great outcomes for the school with a green light from the P&C to fund several important initiatives raised and prioritised by the schools funding committee. These included:

  • Toilet improvements ($7000)
  • Storage Cupboards ($3000)
  • STEM reading books ($3000)
  • Library books ($5000)
  • Physical education equipment ($1700)

The P&C is proud to support the school in these areas by donating $19,700 to the school. These funds have been raised over the years by the many events that the P&C organises.

P&C Meetings

The last 2 P&C meetings have been well attended with 15 people attending the last meeting. Don’t forget it’s only an hour or so of your time to help contribute to your childs school so try and attend or contribute when you can.

Save the Date- Major Fundraiser for 2017

Our major fundraiser will be held on Saturday Night 19th August. Rest assured it will be an awesome night of entertainment, games, frivolity, dress-ups and much, much more!! More details will emerge as posters go up this week.

We will be asking the school community for donations of products and prizes to help make the night a success so look out for the notes that will go home with your kids.

As always, if anyone has any questions about the P&C please contact Neale McQuire on 0400 791 968.
