Principal’s Introduction

Newborough Netball Club

Last Saturday I ventured down to a smokey Matthews Netball Centre to watch our Newborough netball teams in action. The earliest game commenced at 7:45am with the slick year sixes finishing off the morning with a 9:00am start. It certainly was an action packed couple of hours. All the girls really tried hard and showed great Newborough team spirit. It was terrific to see so many mums, dads, brothers, sisters and extended family all cheering and supporting the girls. They really appreciated it too. You could see them lift with all the positive encouragement.

The first game was with the newest team, our year threes. Like all the teams they were very excited to show off their hard work and skills. They scored a goal early much to the delight of the whole team and all the spectators. Next it was off to see the year fours. You could easily see how much these girls develop over a season and from each game. The year four girls showed a lot of confidence moving the ball up and down the court. The coaches all do a wonderful job as we see at the after school training sessions and during the games. Next it was off to the year five teams. Both teams showed grit and determination against strong opposition. The final game for the day was the year sixes. They have been together for four years and it really showed. They took advantage of quick ball movement and very accurate goal shooting to have a memorable win.

Congratulations to all the players and coaches. We are very fortunate to have such a close and strong club. Thank you to Head Coach Alison Stephens who organised a map and schedule for me. I would have been totally lost without it as the centre is packed to the brim with netball games starting and finishing at a range of times and all over the place.

I do like to see our students at their weekend sporting and leisure pursuits and to let everyone know about achievements of our students out of school time. Please let me know and I will endeavour to attend and support.

Understanding Others

One of the many things that we pride ourselves in at Newborough PS is our understanding and tolerance of others. Everyone is valued and everyone is unique. Mrs Murdoch recently forwarded this little You-Tube video clip called ‘Amazing Things Happen’. It provides an introduction to autism that aims to raise awareness among young non-autistic audiences to stimulate understanding and acceptance. It is not only a great message about autism it is a great message about life.

STEM Class Award

Our latest STEM Class Award was presented to Mason Leckey year one, room 9, by our sponsor Mr Mike Ferraro from Wright Real Estate. His class teacher Mrs Warr and Science teacher Mrs Wimmer jointly selected Mason.

‘Mason participates enthusiastically in guided science investigations. He shares his ideas and experiences as he communicates his observations with his peers. Mason makes realistic predictions and knows how to apply his good general knowledge. In Mathematics, Mason works hard to solve the problem and demonstrates great persistence. He listens carefully and is always able to explain concepts using the appropriate mathematical terms.’

In the photo Mason, dressed as a Dr Seuss character for his class item, proudly receives his certificate and voucher from our sponsor Mike Ferraro. The $25 voucher is redeemable at the STEM filled Australian Geographic shop. I am sure Mason will have a great time selecting a challenging prize.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2017

In the past few newsletters and teachers’ own classroom newsletters, Newborough Primary School has been advertising that your child’s Semester 1 report will be delivered electronically via email at the end of this term in Week 10 and NOT be a printed copy as per in the past.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

Very few parents in the school do not have an email address. However, it is imperative that you ensure your email address is correct with the school for the purposes of receiving your child/children’s reports.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

Newborough Primary will be celebrating the 2017 National NAIDOC Week in Week 10 of this term with the theme being Our Languages Matter.

The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017.

As part of Newborough Primary School’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, we have organised for an Indigenous performer to come to school on Wednesday 21st June. Dion will share tales and artifacts from his culture, teaching students about the different traditions of both Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal storytelling, song and dance.

The cost per child is $5.00 to be paid by Friday 16th June please.

Speak-Up 2017

Years 3-6 students will very soon be preparing speeches for the 2017 annual Freemasons Speak-Up public speaking awards. The Speak-Up challenge is closely linked to the Western Australian English curriculum and provides students with an opportunity to express their views confidently – and encourage them to research and compose a speech that shows their understanding of a topic. For students in Years 4-6 in particular, teachers will be encouraging researching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics. We are very excited to see what students think of this year!

The Rules

The award is open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6 in the Perth metropolitan area and Peel region. All Year 3,4,5 and 6 students will hold class or year level talks later in the term with three students being nominated from each class to go into the Newborough Primary School finals. Your class teacher will let you know when the class talks will be held.

The Newborough Primary School Year 3-4 Final will be held on Wednesday 14th June at 9 am in the Undercover Area with the final for the Year 5—6 students being on Thursday 15th June at 9am. From the adjudication process, 3 students will be chosen from Years 4-6 to represent Newborough Primary School at a district level.

Speak-Up has formed an integral part of the middle and upper primary students Speaking and Listening program and we look forward to another successful year this year.

Kind regards,
Karen Tucknott
