Principal’s Introduction

Calender Correction

There has been an error in the number of School Development Days allocated to the calendar for this year. This was my error when presenting the number of days to the School Board last year. I recommended four School Development Days when there should only have only been three. These days do not include the first two days prior to children returning on 1st February and the last day of the year after children finish on Thursday 14th December. I took this error to the School Board and it was unanimously agreed that the School Development Day allocated to the start of term three on 17th July revert to a normal school day. This will have least impact on those who have may have made holiday arrangements and will allow staff to work on planning and professional learning.

I sincerely apologise for this error and hope it has not caused too many problems.

In-term swimming will still commence on Tuesday 18th July. If there is any good news it means we have a day to remind and prepare the students for their first day of in-term swimming on the Tuesday.

Facilities Improvements Sub-Committee - Parents/Community Members Wanted

Last year the School Board commenced setting up a Sub-Committee to begin the process of advocating for facilities improvements at our school. Now that the DES School Review has concluded the Board would like to get moving on facilities improvements early term two. Two key areas are the main focus of the sub-committee. Firstly safety and security and secondly school infrastructure. The terms of Reference and background information for the Sub-Committee can be found in the School Board section of the school’s website at the link below.

http://www.newboroughps.wa.edu.au/for-parents/school-board/

The Board is interested in having two parents/community members on the Sub-Committee. These two representatives will join Board members John Worthy, Matt Gaunt, Irene Froyland, Ian Pollock; and Ian Sherborne (Patron), Sharon Singleton (Staff), Karen Tucknott (Staff) Nat Kos (Staff) and Kelly Hughes (Staff). Having an architectural/builder/project management type background would be advantageous but not essential. If you are interested or would like to know more please contact John Worthy. John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au

School Review

During week eight we had our School Review with Lead Reviewer Mr Tom Campbell and Reviewer Dr Susan Hall. Joining the Review team as an independent observer was Mr Ken Perris who is the new Director of the Department of Education Services (DES). A really big thank you to all staff, parents, students and our valued Board members for your contributions towards our DES School Review. I have been advised that I should receive a ‘confidential draft’ copy of the Review findings early in term two. I am then afforded the opportunity to check the accuracy or challenge the findings before they are signed off and published (website and hard copy).

I look forward to sharing the Independent Review Findings and incorporating these as we build our next Business Plan 2018-2020.

STEM Awards

Here are our first two STEM Class award winners for 2017. The award is offered to a student from the assembly host class who excels in the area of STEM. Throughout the year someone from each PP-6 class will be awarded a certificate and $20 voucher to spend at an Australian Geographic shop. The assembly host teacher and Science Specialist teachers, either Ms Adams or Mrs Wimmer, select the winner from set criteria. The award is kindly sponsored by Mike Ferraro from Wright Real Estate Doubleview.

Harper Cowan Year 2 Room 11 Mrs Murray’s Class

For following design and scientific investigation processes to produce reliable results. Harper is systematic and considered in his role as a problem solver, along with being a collaborative group member. Well done, Harper.

Erica Watts Year 4 Room 7 Mr Luxton’s Class

Erica displays a thoughtful, diligent and logical approach when conducting Science Experiments. She demonstrated this recently when designing, constructing and appraising her model of a working piston.

Erica displays the necessary credentials for success in the field of STEM.

I hope this award further encourages her to further develop her interests in this area of endeavour.

School Board Meeting Summary 27 March

The School Board met on Monday March 27th. Some of the key areas discussed included:

Literacy Progress

Miss Tucknott outlined planning to revise components of literacy teaching in line with minor changes from the West-Coast Speech and Language Centre and WA Curriculum. The programs in place across the school in Literacy are working well. Data presented to the School Reviewers showed marked improvement across the school since their last review in 2014.

Electronic Student Reports

Miss Tucknott presented information on a new initiative of the Department that allows for student reports to be sent home electronically via email. The Board endorsed this to occur for semester one 2016 reports.

School Finances

The Board reviewed the current ‘draft’ budget ensuring funding was directed towards school priorities. Mathematics has received a considerable boost in line with the focus on problem solving and mathematics resources. Voluntary contributions ($60) data showed we are at a similar collection point to last year at 68%. At the end of last year the collection rate reached 85%.

Exit Surveys

The School Board has initiated the construction of an exit survey for graduating students and their families to gain a deeper understanding of areas we do well or could improve for students as they go to high school. The survey was presented for discussion and will be trialled by the Board before going out mid-term two. It was decided that the best time to conduct the survey was when students had settled into their new high school and their memories of primary school are still fresh.

School Development Day Revised Dates (SDD)

Following an error in the allocation of the number of staff development days, the School Board discussed reducing the number by one. Consideration was given to parents who may have booked holidays, Day Care etc. and the professional learning/work of staff. There will be no SDD on 17th July. Students and staff commence term three on Monday 17th July. Swimming still commences on Tuesday 18th July.

Independent DES Review

The Board discussed feedback from the DES Review and the timeline and process for developing our next Business Plan 2018-2020.

Facilities Sub-Committee

With the DES Review concluded the Board will now focus more attention to improving the facilities at school. See notice in this newsletter for Community members interested being on this important sub-committee of the Board.

Term Account and Swimming

Term Accounts for Term 2 have today been sent home with each student, as well as the relevant notes. These accounts detail each incursion/excursion that will take place during the forthcoming term, to assist parents with their financial planning. You are welcome to pay for them upfront, or pay for them by the due date which appears on the relevant note.

We have also included the costs for in term swimming, which will take place in Week 1 of Term 3. While payment will not be required until late in Term 2, some parents prefer to enter a payment plan so that the costs are fully covered by the time swimming starts. If you’d like to take up this option, please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, at the beginning of Term 2.

A reminder that all payments can be made via direct deposit, or via cash/cheque. Account details are:

Student Health Care Procedures and Ambulance

Transporting Students with a Medical Emergency

Wow! Last week was interesting and certainly kept the admin team on our toes. We had two students break their arms whilst playing at recess and lunchtime. It is thus a good time to remind all parents to check their health funds for their ambulance cover or to urge parents without medical/ambulance cover to please consider purchasing it as the cost of an ambulance can be expensive otherwise, if we need to call one out for your child.

At all times of a medical emergency, the school follows the Department of Education’s Student Health Care Policy and Procedures. All parents are contacted as a priority in any case of a child being seriously injured. Whilst in most cases we ask parents if they wish for the school to call an ambulance, this may occur without parent consent if we deem the nature of the injury or reaction of the child needs this service, regardless of if the parent has ambulance cover. In short, the school can override a parents request NOT to call an ambulance if we deem the student requires one.

The following information is direct from the Department of Education’s Student Health Care Policy and Procedures in regards to the cost of any ambulance services.

Guidance Meeting the Cost of the Ambulance Service

The Student Health Care Summary which is completed by all parents at enrolment indicates that parents are expected to meet the cost of an ambulance in an emergency.

Cancellation of an ambulance call out by parents

In an emergency, a school may call an ambulance for a student at risk, but when parents are contacted, they may request cancellation of the ambulance and advise that they will transport the student. The school has a duty of care for the student and arrangements for transport by ambulance should proceed. An ambulance should not be cancelled until parents arrive and the student is handed into their care.

We hope you have a happy broken bone free holiday.

Semester 1 Student Formal Reports - Electronic Delivery

In consultation with the School Board, Newborough Primary School will be delivering the Semester 1 student formal reports via an emailed report link, instead of a paper copy at the end of Term 2.

The advantages for schools and the parent community of an electronic report include:

  • a timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

In order for each parent to receive their child’s report electronically, parents must ensure that their email addresses are correct at the front office.

No email address?

The School will provide a hard copy for families without an email address. Please make contact with the Karen Tucknott if this is the case. We expect this to be a minimal amount of families.

The School will not be providing both an email copy and hard copy of the report to any families.

Separated Parents:

Via email, the School can now provide an electronic report to both parents in the case of parents no longer residing with each other. Otherwise, the report will go to the first email contact person on our records. If you are a parent with a secondary email address with the school and request for the report/s to be emailed to you due to your family circumstances, please email the school requesting the electronic report by FRIDAY 5th MAY please for the report set-up to be complete.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss this further.

Kind regards,
Karen Tucknott

Lost Property

A reminder that Newborough Primary School's main Lost Property rack is located in front of the Uniform Shop. Each morning, we bring the Lost Property out and put it away after school. The Lost Property is usually sorted once a week and clothes and items with names are returned to their owner. All other unnamed lost property is sorted into second hand uniforms that can be resold, put aside for classroom use, especially for the winter months, taken to Op Shops or disposed of. Many classrooms also have their own lost property area.

Much of the lost property found around the school is non school related items and left by children, parents or community members after school or on weekends when the school is not open. The staff at the school are always picking up spare water bottles, non school clothing, lost socks, shoes, lunch boxes, toys, scooters, camping chairs etc - usually all without names. We do this to help keep our school tidy, along with picking up lots of rubbish also left behind at the school. Unfortunately we do not have the space to store all of these non school related items for a long period of time and they are sorted after a week or so, especially large bulky items. In many cases, belongings left behind don't even make it to lost property as they are sometimes stolen or wrecked by other people on school grounds during this time. While we do pick up a lot of left over property from around the school, we cannot be responsible for any belongings left at the school.

Please check carefully that you have all your child’s belongings before you leave the school each day. If you have lost something, check the lost property area and ask at the front office at your earliest convenience to see if the item is there. We are often very surprised when people come to look for shoes or other items a few weeks after they had been left at the school!

We strongly suggest that you LABEL very clearly all of your child's belongings, especially as winter approaches and children wear more clothing to school. This also helps us to return found items to the correct person, if a valuable item has been left behind.

We thank both parents and students for being careful and taking responsibility for their own belongings. On a final note, as the term ends, please check the lost property for any items your child may have misplaced over the past few weeks as all unlabelled items will be donated to the Uniform Shop for resale. Thank you for your cooperation.

Interschool Swimming Carnival

Last Friday, our team of 50 swimmers from Years 4 - 6 travelled to Greenwood College for our annual Interschool Swimming Carnival to compete against students from the Central Coastal District comprising of Glengarry, Duncraig, Hillarys and Newborough Primary Schools. With magnificent warm Autumn weather, our students participated in a very exciting and memorable carnival. Our Captains, of Holly Appleby and Daniel Boshart as well as our Vice Captains of Rohan Cooke and Makayla Claussen led superbly demonstrated excellent leadership skills as did the other children who assisted their teachers in the bay when the leaders where swimming. All of the children were wonderfully behaved and a credit to themselves as ambassadors representing the school.

Our team participated with great endeavour in all events against very good swimmers from all the other schools with many close finishes recorded. Once again the freestyle relay events were the highlight of the day with all schools demonstrating much improved overall swimming abilities. Despite our come from behind win in the Grand Relay, our school was unable to beat a very strong swimming team from Glengarry this year who led from the start of the carnival. We would like to sincerely congratulate all of the competitors selected for their outstanding efforts. Well done boys and girls on your fabulous efforts, sportsmanship and team work throughout the carnival.

There are always many people to thank for helping to get our swimming team prepared for the carnival. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to assist with the many jobs at the carnival. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by all of the staff, parents and students from each of the schools participating. Thank you to our wonderful staff and parents for your support and assistance at after school training and a huge thank you to Mr Blanch for your tireless assistance at the carnival as well as all of the parents and friends who came along to support their children. A fantastic effort again Newborough!

Final Placings

1st - Glengarry - 502 points
2nd - Newborough - 434 points
3rd - Duncraig - 249points
4th - Hillarys - 258 points

Congratulations to the following children for being awarded with a Champion medallion.

Moort Boodja - Newborough’s Very Own Mud Rush Obstacle Course

This was the fourth year of the Moort Boodja (family run) obstacle course and a fun, wet and dirty day was had by all. This year we had over 200 participants! It is a school event that continues to grow in popularity with all year groups from kindy to past Newborough students now in high school.

Ian Pollock (our course mastermind) worked up a treat with his crafty wife Sabine completing some very artistic course additions this year. It was a run that involved running over obstacles, dodging water sprays, avoiding dangling electric wires, sliding through jelly and diving into ice mud pits. Moort Boodja would not have been complete without our giant water slides which are always a favourite. Thank you Ian and Sabine for your efforts in making Moort Boodja so entertaining.

Parent and teacher volunteers were at the school from 6am setting up, running the BBQ, helping on the many obstacles or with packing away. Some started the evening before digging out the sand pits. On behalf of the organizers of Moort Boodja …….THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all volunteers involved in any way, shape or form.

Without you this event is just not possible

We are the luckiest school in Perth to have the very talented Andrew Winton in our community, and he kept us all entertained with live music - always a crowd pleaser! Thank you Andrew & Karen Winton for the fantastic support you have shown this event and the school over the last few years. It truly is a highlight after the “running of the obstacles” and the obligatory sausage sizzle or egg and bacon roll.

Thanks to all those who participated this year. That’s the wrap for another year!

Newborough Movie Night Under the Stars - Friday 24 March

Almost 300 people bought their picnics, beanbags and blankets and sat under the stars and watched BIG FRIENDLY GIANT. It was a brilliant community event with some families from other schools coming and joining in the fun. There will be another movie night in late November and we will keep you posted.

Ride, Scoot or Walk to School Day

The P&C hosted another successful Ride, Scoot or Walk to School on Wednesday 29 March.

It was wonderful to see all the happy smiling faces arrive in the quadrangle on their colourful bikes and scooters and then take part in racing around the obstacle course, and it was nice to see some children walking around the obstacle course as well!!

Lots of fresh fruit was enjoyed by the students and siblings. A huge thank you to Sun Fresh Fruit & Vegetables, Doubleview for their donation of the fruit and of course their continued support of Newborough PS. Please pop into their shop on Scarborough Beach Road and thank them as well!

Well done everyone for starting the day in a healthy way - keep up the good work, and we look forward to hosting another Ride to School in Term 3. And of course, as always, a big thank you to those that helped in the organisation of the activity - without your continued support we would be lost.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is at the link below.
