Principal’s Introduction

Swimming Carnival

Last Friday the 17th March we held the annual Faction Swimming Carnival at Churchlands Senior High School Swimming Pool. On a beautiful day, not too hot or cold, our students excelled in a broad range of events culminating in the highly anticipated Boys/Girls Mixed Freestyle Grand Relay with years 4, 5 & 6 participating. This event epitomised the day with each faction taking a turn to lead and the final swimmers coming in to a rousing applause with only two metres separating first and last. The sportsmanship was superb throughout and the competition tough and fair. Something our school prides itself and was certainly on display all day. As usual there was a terrific group of parents who took on all the important jobs from announcer, starter, marshalls, recorders, life savers, encouragers and judges. The spectators consisting parents, grandparents, former students, siblings and visitors were loud and enthusiastic all day spurring super efforts from all swimmers and giving raucous applause from first to last and all in between. Every effort recognised by all making it fun for all. The staff did a brilliant job as well. We were fortunate to have our much loved Patron Mr Ian Sherborne present the overall faction champion shield to Corbett – Yellow with gracious speeches from Captains Daniel Boshart and Holly Appleby.

Our carnival is the culmination of weeks of organisation and work so capably led by Ms Kris Williams. There are very few primary schools who go to the trouble Ms Williams does training up the children voluntarily after school, matching abilities and extending the good swimmers and supporting those who are not so competent but having a go. The use of swimming levels ensures every child is well looked after. Again parents and staff supporting these after school sessions really making it happen.

We now look forward to Ms Williams announcing the school’s Interschool Swimming Squad and helping them train up and test themselves against the next level of competition. Go Newborough!

Dogs on School Grounds

It has taken quite a while but we now have fourteen strategically placed signs at key entrance points to our school outlining our Dogs on School Grounds Policy and key messages about visitors reporting to the front office and actually where our boundaries and the City of Stirling really are. We have also placed School Watch signs so if anyone observes inappropriate behaviours on our grounds these can be reported to the authorities. Vandalism from unwanted visitors is costing us around $70 000 to $80 000 every year. Over $250 000 in 2015 when two classrooms were flooded and carpet, ceilings needed replacing, interactive whiteboards and much more were severely water damaged. That doesn’t include the distress to students and staff and the inconvenience of relocating classes whilst damage is repaired. To equate this to school resources we are looking at the cost of two Education Assistants a year. Whilst we don’t directly get charged there is an impact to Government spending in schools. Building Management and Works wear the cost from the Department of Education budget.

One of the unique and highly valued aspects of our school is the wonderful open spaces created from the partnership between our school and the City of Stirling parks. Quite regularly we get visitors who simply don’t understand they have entered school grounds. Hopefully the signs will help.

This year I am only aware of two dog ‘land mine’ incidents soiling children’s shoes. The majority of our dog and people visitors are very respectful and keep an eye on the wellbeing of our school. The new Nature Playground has been a wonderful addition to our school and local community. It is great to see local kids and families playing there after school and on weekends. All schools, like ours, should be the proud centre of community.

Newborough Netball Club

There is a lot of excitement as the new netball season gets closer with 58 girls from years 3-6 commencing training. Each year has one team except year five who have two teams. A fabulous group of dedicated Mum’s are coaching the girls.

  • Michelle Lister (Year 6)
  • Tracey Richards and Alyson Stephens (Year 5)
  • Karen Winton (Year 4)
  • Bec Dallin (Year 3) and
  • Vanessa Walker (Year 2)

In waiting the nine year two girls will be starting skills training in term two. They won’t be playing games but will learn a lot of skills and have great fun doing so.

Some of our year five and six girls have spent the last four weeks trying out for the Perth Netball Association (PNA) Development U/12 squad. Newborough Head Coach, Alyson Stephens was thrilled that so many girls from Newborough trialled for the squad. Having a go is really important and showing your best and making new friends is what it is all about said Alyson. Well done to year sixes Kerrie Tierney, Makayla Claussen, Neve Gaunt and Tamaysha Blurton and Year fives Sammy Stephens, Molly Allen, Mia Dunn and Stella McQuire.

A very BIG congratulations to Tamaysha Blurton who got selected. A huge achievement! The photo shows Tamaysha’s skill and determination as a goal shooter.

Go Girls! Have a great season.

School Review

This week our school is having its triennial Department of Education Services (DES) Review looking at how we have achieved against our Business Plan 2015-2017 and the Delivery and Performance Agreement signed with our Director General, Ms Sharyn O’Neill.

The reviewers are Mr Tom Campbell and Dr Susan Hall. They may be joined by the new Head of DES Mr Ken Perris as an observer. Mr Campbell is a highly regarded recently retired primary school principal and Dr Hall has a university background. They have been researching into our school’s data and systems prior to the visit and will interview a broad range of staff, Board members, students and parents to gain deeper insights into our school. Following the review we will be presented with a range of commendations and recommendations. In part, these will help guide us as we construct our new Business Plan for 2018-2020. Having the review so early in the year will allow the school and Board time to reflect and construct a plan that really caters for our students and community needs.

Thank you to all those who have put many hours preparing for the review. I am sure we will benefit from our collective expertise and forward planning to make our school an even better place for children to learn and staff and parents to nurture this together.

Tee ball

The Stirling Apache Indians won the under 11A Division Tee ball Grand Final on Saturday morning, with a convincing 36-11 victory.

It was a fantastic display of tee ball, both skills and sportsmanship in drizzly conditions and a great reward for hard work and effort throughout the season and only lost one game.

The team comprised of Holly Appleby, Makayla Claussen, Neve Gaunt, Ruby Kirk, Ally Lister, Charli Wenden, Lily Wenden, Anna Yates and Sophie Yates.

Thanks to the Irwin, Cooper and Tierney families as well Ms Phillips for cheering us along.

Ride, Scoot or Walk to School

This event will be held on Wednesday 29th March 2017. We encourage students and parents to ride, scoot or walk to school together arriving around 8:15am to share the fun of the obstacle course in the quadrangle and some healthy fresh fruit snacks to keep you going when you arrive. Participants can enter into the draw for a family gift hamper full of delicious healthy snacks. This will be drawn after the second ride to school day in term 3.

All participants must wear a helmet when riding a bike to school and scooter riders are encouraged to do so as well.

Ride, Scoot or Walk to School day is a great opportunity for parents to reinforce the safety messages for riding and walking and stranger danger.

I will be on my bike, with my new helmet and look forward to seeing as many participants as possible.

Moort Boodja

This years’ Moort Boodja promises to be the best one yet. I have heard that there will be some extra special obstacles related to April 1st. Can’t tell you but WATCH OUT!! Brochures and entry forms are being distributed and need to be returned by Wednesday 29th March (Ride, Scoot or Walk to School Day). See you there April Foolers!!

NAPLAN 2017

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students are expected to participate in the testing. They will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy.

Wherever possible, schools will organise another time between 9 – 12 May for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests. Students are not permitted to sit tests before or after these dates.

Students who are travelling within Australia during the testing week may be able to arrange to sit the tests at a local school. For more information please contact Mr Worthy.

The tests are scheduled for the mornings of Tuesday 9 May, Wednesday 10 May and Thursday 11 May 2017. All schools across Australia will complete the tests on the same days.

What will be tested?

The content of each test is informed by the Australian Curriculum (English and Mathematics).

Language Conventions: students identify and correct spelling errors and answer questions on aspects of grammar and punctuation.

Writing: students write a text in response to a given stimulus. They are assessed on the quality and organisation of ideas, structuring of sentences and use of correct spelling and punctuation.

Reading: students read a number of short texts and answer questions to show understanding of the texts.

Numeracy: students solve problems across Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

The NAPLAN tests are designed to complement the regular assessments made by teachers throughout the year. NAPLAN tests are conducted at schools and administered by classroom teachers, school deputies or the principal.

Although some schools will be doing online NAPLAN tests in 2017, Newborough Primary School will be using pencil and paper as in previous years.

All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN. Students with disability or who have a temporary injury will be provided with assistance during the tests as specified in the National Protocols for Test Administration.

What are the benefits of a national test?

The test results provide a snapshot of a student's achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. They assist teachers to better identify students who require additional support or enrichment. Students and parents can use individual results to discuss achievement with teachers. The tests allow the progress of each student to be monitored over time. The results support schools to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs. State and territory departments of education gain information to help them evaluate programs and allocate resources.

Will I receive a report on my child’s performance?

Your child’s NAPLAN report will be issued through your school in mid-August. The report will be accompanied by an information brochure. All students’ individual results are strictly confidential. If you have not received your child’s report, please contact the school.

Can I help my child prepare for the tests?

The provision of comprehensive teaching and learning programs is the best preparation that schools can provide for their students. We will ensure students are familiar with the format, language, response types and time constraints of the tests. Sample questions can be accessed at the national NAPLAN website. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

http://nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests

What additional support can schools provide to enable students to participate?

All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN. Students with disability or who have a temporary injury will be provided with assistance during the tests as specified in the National Protocols for Test Administration. Formal exemptions may be granted for students with disability, or who have recently arrived in Australia and are from a non-English-speaking background. Parents also have the right to withdraw their child from the tests. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, you must sign a parent or carer consent form. Please contact Mr Worthy for more information.

You can get more information on the NAPLAN testing process, as it relates to your child specifically, by contacting your child’s school. For general NAPLAN information you can access the:

Faction Swimming

Last Friday, the children in Year’s 4 – 6, travelled to Churchlands Senior High School to participate in our annual Faction Swimming Carnival. With much anticipation from the record number of children who were able to train this year, and from the new students and Year 4’s participating for the first time, the swimming carnival was a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their water confidence and demonstrate their swimming abilities in a range of activities from novelty fun events to competitive racing.

With beautiful Autumn weather, and a very enticing pool, the students representing their factions participated with great effort and determination to do their best for their team. For some children, it was their first time in a swimming carnival and for many children they had to overcome their own anxiety to demonstrate courage, determination and persistence to swim the 25m. No matter where the children finished in any event, they were rewarded with the knowledge that they had succeeded in their personal challenge and that their efforts were acknowledged by their family, friends and teachers who had supported them throughout their event.

All of the children participating showed great endeavour, good team spirit and sportsmanship to make it a wonderful day to remember. The carnival is designed for maximum participation despite the children’s level of swimming experience, and all of the children who attended had a fun and rewarding experience. It was delightful to see so many children smiling, cheering and encouraging their team mates during all of the events.

Once again, there was a wonderful turn out of parents, grandparents, friends and former students to support the children. We would like to thank our former Principal and now Patron, Mr Ian Sherborne for his ongoing support of the school by once again, attending the carnival and presenting the overall winning faction with the Meritorious shield.

Our carnivals would not be as successful and memorable for the children without the wonderful assistance and support that the parents and staff provide. I would like to sincerely thank all parents, staff and former students who helped with training and all of the jobs before, during and after the carnival. Special thanks to our gardener, Tim, Mr Worthy and Mr Stenhouse for your assistance with the set up prior to the carnival and to all of the parents who assisted with the packing up after the carnival.

After finishing in second place last year, Corbett Faction led from the beginning of the carnival despite the wonderful individual and team efforts from all of the other swimmers in Manning and Connor Factions. Manning have shown that they are much improved swimmers finishing in second place overall and may be the team to watch out for in 2018! Congratulations and well done to all members of every team for your wonderful efforts.

Final Scores:

1st Place – Corbett – 678 points
2nd Place – Manning – 584 points
3rd Place – Connor – 525 points

We would like to congratulate the following children who won the Championship medallions –

Year 4 Runner-Up Champions Lily Wenden (Connor) and Torren Sampson (Manning)
Year 4 Champions Holly Boshart (Corbett) and Luke Austin (Connor)
Year 5 Runner-Up Champions Sammy Stephens (Manning) and Luca Otake (Connor)
Year 5 Champions Molly Allan (Corbett) and Ben Prance (Corbett)

Year 6 Champions Holly Appleby (Corbett) and Daniel Boshart (Corbett)

Interschool Swimming

On Friday 31st March, our Interschool team of 50 students will travel to Greenwood College, in Greenwood to defend our Interschool Swimming Champions title against schools in the Coastal District of Hillarys, Duncraig and Glengarry for the Interschool Swimming competition. Selected students for this carnival have been training after school at Churchlands SHS this week. Training for this event concludes on Thursday 23rd March.

Easter Raffle

Newborough Cares

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to meet some of that. This week we are collecting non-perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers as needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs.

Some suggestions of what to donate : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers. Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal.

The other option is for people to donate a $10 Woolworths gift card. This would be used by me (not given to families) when there is an immediate need that the stock I have doesn’t meet.

Please bring the donations to Room 5 before school this week (20th -24th March), any day.

Thanks,

Ali Dee
School Chaplain on behalf of the Pastoral Care Committee

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is at the link below.
