Principal’s Introduction

School Board Facilities Improvement Sub Committee

Late last year the School Board discussed the setting up of a Board sub-committee to review and advocate for facility improvements and upgrades to ensure our school can best serve our students, staff and school community. Given the school is having a major review educational from the Department of Education Services later this month the Board will commence the work of the sub-committee early in term two. Several areas of concern have been raised by staff and parents that will be the early focus of the sub committee’s work. This includes:

  • School security
  • Administration upgrade
  • Car parking and vehicle access
  • Maintenance and repair (Painting, asphalt, veranda boards, roof tile replacement, trees, general structure etc.)
  • Sub-standard facilities against the new primary school’s brief

The school has recently identified active white ants in an area of classrooms 10-12. A pest control specialist has conducted a survey of the whole school and in consultation with Building Management and Works further survey and structural testing will occur to determine the extent of damage and rectification, including extermination of any white ant nests. Works will be scheduled to minimise disruption and ensure safety to classes once the full extent is known.

A New Award Supporting STEM

This new award is offered to a student from the assembly host class at each assembly in 2017 to highlight our school focus on STEM – Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. All classes from Pre-primary to year 6 will participate over the year when their assembly occurs.

The home class teacher(s) and Science teacher – Ms Adams or Mrs Wimmer liaise to select a student who demonstrates at least several of the following qualities:

Science

  • Participates in and enjoys Science lessons
  • Shows a Scientific enquiring mind

Technology

  • Uses technology design to help their learning
  • Engages in technology processes

Engineering

  • Enjoys building and constructing
  • Can plan, build modify and appraise their constructions

Mathematics

  • Enjoys and is successful at math problem solving
  • Demonstrates sound understanding of mathematics concepts

Overall

  • Applies aspects of STEM outside the school environment
  • Inspires others to THINK, CREATE, COLLABORATE

The student selected for the award is given a certificate and voucher kindly sponsored by Wright Real Estate Doubleview Property Consultant Mr Mike Ferraro at their class assembly. The voucher is worth $25 from Australian Geographic, who has a broad range of fantastic items in the STEM area.

Our first award winner was Harper Cowan from Ms Murray’s year two class. Well done Harper!

Road Safety

It was nice to hear how safety conscious and well-mannered the majority of our students and parents are who use the Newborough Street crossing with our Police Traffic Warden Mr Gary Hammersley. Mr Hammersley reports:

For February 2017 the averages at the Crosswalk were;

  • Morning - 61 students/parents and 317 vehicles per hour;
  • Afternoon - 44 students/parents and 279 vehicles per hour.

The vast majority of parents have set an excellent example for their children.

Newborough Primary School Mobile Phone use whist driving it is less than 1% of drivers. Car sharing or greater than 1 person in a car is 41%.

Thanks. Police Traffic Warden Gary Hammersley

Note: Please be extremely careful parking and reversing onto the road. A local community member reported to the school that on several occasions she has witnessed cars parking illegally on the verge on the south side Newborough Street with children crossing to the car and the car taking off in a dangerous manner. Incidents such as these will be reported to the police and or local council in future by the community member. Cars that are parked in areas not designated for parking also run the risk of parking fines. Our local council has been active in this area with several fines issued recently.

At the next assembly I will remind all children of safety rules whilst crossing roads and that children should use the Police Traffic Warden to cross Newborough Street even if it means walking that little bit extra distance.

“Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve’.”

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team please see Mrs Tennant in Room 3 or email vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au. It might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time!

NAPLAN 2017

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students are expected to participate in the testing. They will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy.

Wherever possible, schools will organise another time between 9 – 12 May for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests. Students are not permitted to sit tests before or after these dates.

Students who are travelling within Australia during the testing week may be able to arrange to sit the tests at a local school. For more information please contact Mr Worthy.

The tests are scheduled for the mornings of Tuesday 9 May, Wednesday 10 May and Thursday 11 May 2017. All schools across Australia will complete the tests on the same days.

What will be tested?

The content of each test is informed by the Australian Curriculum (English and Mathematics).

Language Conventions: students identify and correct spelling errors and answer questions on aspects of grammar and punctuation.

Writing: students write a text in response to a given stimulus. They are assessed on the quality and organisation of ideas, structuring of sentences and use of correct spelling and punctuation.

Reading: students read a number of short texts and answer questions to show understanding of the texts.

Numeracy: students solve problems across Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

The NAPLAN tests are designed to complement the regular assessments made by teachers throughout the year. NAPLAN tests are conducted at schools and administered by classroom teachers, school deputies or the principal.

Although some schools will be doing online NAPLAN tests in 2017, Newborough Primary School will be using pencil and paper as in previous years.

All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN. Students with disability or who have a temporary injury will be provided with assistance during the tests as specified in the National Protocols for Test Administration.

What are the benefits of a national test?

The test results provide a snapshot of a student's achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. They assist teachers to better identify students who require additional support or enrichment. Students and parents can use individual results to discuss achievement with teachers. The tests allow the progress of each student to be monitored over time. The results support schools to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs. State and territory departments of education gain information to help them evaluate programs and allocate resources.

Will I receive a report on my child’s performance?

Your child’s NAPLAN report will be issued through your school in mid-August. The report will be accompanied by an information brochure. All students’ individual results are strictly confidential. If you have not received your child’s report, please contact the school.

Can I help my child prepare for the tests?

The provision of comprehensive teaching and learning programs is the best preparation that schools can provide for their students. We will ensure students are familiar with the format, language, response types and time constraints of the tests. Sample questions can be accessed at nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests on the national NAPLAN website. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

What additional support can schools provide to enable students to participate?

All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN. Students with disability or who have a temporary injury will be provided with assistance during the tests as specified in the National Protocols for Test Administration. Formal exemptions may be granted for students with disability, or who have recently arrived in Australia and are from a non-English-speaking background. Parents also have the right to withdraw their child from the tests. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, you must sign a parent or carer consent form. Please contact Mr Worthy for more information.

You can get more information on the NAPLAN testing process, as it relates to your child specifically, by contacting your child’s school. For general NAPLAN information you can access the:

Faction Swimming Carnival

The annual Faction Swimming Carnival will be held next week on Friday 17th March from 10.30 - 2.30 at Churchlands SHS for all children in Years 4 - 6. Every effort has been made to ensure that all children are participating in events that they are capable of and novelty events have been included for some students to enjoy the carnival in non swimming events. Parents/Guardians are asked to please return their child's Faction Swimming Excursion Consent form asap and are reminded that internet payment for this event is required by Friday 11th March and cash payment by Tuesday 14th March. If your child's consent form is not returned by Tuesday 14th March, or consent is not given, children will remain at school for this day.

Carnival Helpers - Still needed

A very big thank you to all of the parents who have already volunteered to assist at the carnival next week. I am still requiring four more parents for some jobs and I have attached a form for interested parents to complete in this newsletter.

Students will receive their individual event forms along with the parent programme next Monday.

Thank you

I would sincerely like to thank all of the parents who have been able to take their children to Churchlands SHS for training over the past few weeks and for making themselves available to assist with the timing, starting, recording, pool supervision and baby sitting so that the children could develop some fitness and stroke development for the carnival. A huge thank you must also go to my colleagues for their assistance and support at training. You have all been fantastic. We have had record numbers of students training this year and I would like to wish everyone the very best for the carnival next week. No training is scheduled for next week, however selected students for the Interschool carnival will have training on Tuesday 21st March and Thursday 23rd March at Churchlands SHS. These students will be notified on Monday 20th March.

Good luck to all of the swimmers next week.

Thank you

Positive Behaviour Support

We Need Your Feedback

Positive Behaviour Support

To enhance the strong behaviour processes we already have, Newborough Primary is working towards becoming a PBS school. Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS) is a whole school framework which focuses on promoting positive behaviour throughout the school. PBS is a consultative, collaborative, community owned and evidence based framework. It compliments existing school policies and programmes as well as suiting the specific needs of Newborough Primary. The implementation is a 3 year process as we need to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

In order for PBS to run effectively, the PBS committee will be asking for input from teachers, parents and students. As parents, you will be able to share your thoughts and opinions in the upcoming parent survey which will be distributed this term.

. We hope that all parents take advantage of this opportunity and come along on this journey with us.

If there are any parents interested in joining the PBS committee, please come and see John Worthy or Bree O’Dea.
Please be aware that meetings are every Tuesday fortnight from 3:45-4:45pm.

Easter Raffle

Newborough Cares

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to meet some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate

non- perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers as needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs.

Some suggestions of what to donate : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers. Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal…

The other option is for people to donate a $10 Woolworths gift card. This would be used by me (not given to families) when there is an immediate need that the stock I have doesn’t meet.

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food to Room 5 before school during week 8 (20th -24th March), any day that week.

Thanks,
Ali Dee
School Chaplain on behalf of the Pastoral Care Committee

P & C – Happening in the Next 3 Weeks!!

State Election Day Fundraising BBQ and Cake Stall – Saturday March 11

The undercover area hosts one of the polling stations for the State Election and we will have a BBQ area and cake stall positioned just outside to take advantage of the passing traffic. Elections have always been a great way for the P&C to raise funds for the school. We are asking Newborough families to bake cakes, slices biscuits, cupcakes, muffins or anything yummy that we can sell on the day. Notes and cake boxes have gone out this week with instructions on where donated goodies can be taken to be sold on the day.

We also need about another 6 people to help turn sausages, sell cakes etc on the day. The shifts are 2 hours each. Contact Neale McQuire on 0400 791 968 if you can help.

Don’t forget to vote at the school and buy a sausage sizzle, bacon and egg burger, cake or drink and support the P&C!!

Newborough Movie Night Under the Stars – Friday 24 March

This event is proudly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Scarborough. An amazing 6 metre x 3 metre screen will once again be set up outdoors under the stars on Jim Hazlitt Field on Friday 24 March. The movie to be shown is BIG FRIENDLY GIANT and posters will be put up on the classroom doors soon. Notes and payment slips will be sent home this week with the kids. It will be $5.00 per ticket and bring your own picnics, event chairs and beanbags.

Ride/Scoot to School Day – Wednesday 29 March

Get your kids to ride or scoot to school on Wednesday 29 March. They can enjoy the obstacle course that will be set up and then feast on some fruit which is kindly donated by Sunfresh Fruit and Vegetables, 259 Scarborough Beach Road, Doubleview.

Moort Boodja Family Fun Run – 1 April

A massive day for the Newborough Community, it’s our own Tough Mudder with kids and adults having to brave the different obstacles and slides set up all through the school grounds.

Easter Raffle

Tickets for the Easter Raffle will be sent home with the kids as well as requests for donations. The Easter Assembly will be held on 7 April.

If anyone has any questions about the P and C I am available on 0400 791 968 or newboroughpcpres@gmail.com.

P & C – The Slightly Better News

As mentioned in the last Newsletter the Newborough P&C started with a disappointing turn out for their annual general meeting for 2017, putting the association at risk of needing to shutdown in the next 3 months.

The P&C has received offers of help from about 10 parents which is great and should mean that the P&C will be able to fill our vacant positions and keep operating.

In saying this we currently have approximately 450 parents at the school but only 50 of these parents have put their hands to help with events at their child’s school.

We are setting up an email list for all those who we can contact when we have busy bees, sausage sizzles fundraising nights etc to ask them to volunteer some time in organising, setting up or assisting at these events.

If you are keen to donate a couple of hours of your time can you email me on newboroughpcpres@gmail.com. so I can add you to our email list.

As always if you have any other questions please ring or text me on 0400 791 968 or email me on newboroughpcpres@gmail.com.

Cheers
Neale McQuire

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is at the link below.
