Principal’s Introduction

End of Year Christmas Arrangements

The Christmas and year break is looming large and fast with only two weeks and a couple of days to go. Arrangements are in place for in-term swimming lessons that takes place commencing this Monday 5th December. Please ensure your child is well organised with all the equipment clearly labelled. An extra plastic bag is always a good idea for wet towels and clothing.

Student Christmas Cards – We ask that children who wish to give Christmas cards only do so in the last week of school and use the school’s Christmas Postal Service. Miss Tucknott has organised a “Santa Letter/Cards Christmas Sack’ that will be located outside the Uniform Shop for cards and letters to be dropped in before school. Our students leaders will sort out them out and distribute later in the day to minimise disruptions to classes.

Christmas Candy Canes and Lollies – We ask that students don’t hand out Christmas Candy Canes and lollies at school.

Ocean Net Band

Progress is well underway with our Ocean Net Schools (Yuluma, Doubleview, Deanmore and Scarborough) and Music teachers to establish an Ocean Net Band. Mrs Holmes and I recently met with Mr Bruce Herriman, Principal of the School of Instrumental Music (SIM), to discuss options, support and develop a timeline. It was decided we take a slowly, slowly approach to make sure we get everything in place. Next January 31st all the Music teachers will meet at Newborough to plan a Band Workshop Day for SIM instrumental students (All but classical guitar students). At the workshop, held towards the end of term two, students will spend the day learning to work collaboratively and putting together a concert for parents at the end of the day. Music teachers and principals will meet after the workshop to determine the next phase for the band.

Best Wishes

We wish Ms Anderson all the very best as she finishes a little early on parenting leave. We look forward to an exciting addition to the family early in the New Year. The very versatile Ms Duncan will take the class for the last two weeks of the year.

School Survey Results

Thank you to those parents and staff who completed the School Survey. Students in years five and six are currently completing their surveys. Once this has occurred I will compile a report to present to the School Board and will then add this to the website for all to see.

Board Elections

Congratulations to Mrs Yuliya Novik and Mr Ian Pollock who were elected to the School Board as parent representatives. Ian has been re-elected for a second term with Yuliya for the first time. Thank you to Liza Harvey MLA and her Scarborough electoral office who scrutineered the voting and conducted the count. We had 19 voters, slightly up on our election earlier in the year.

Mrs Vicki Tennant was elected unopposed as the new staff representative replacing Mrs Pip Murdoch.

Roundtable Luncheon with the Principal

The latest Roundtable luncheon hosted by our student leaders was held last Thursday with year four and five representative students Ben, Kate, Matilda, Neve, Taj and Reece. Participants enjoyed a scrumptious luncheon organised by Mr Stenhouse. They were asked what they liked about the school. They really liked their teachers and how they teach, everyone is friendly, the playgrounds and the open environment around the school. When asked what we could do better ideas included having a suggestion box, a nude food day, more tennis racquets in class sets, a writing competition (Like Speak Up), a talent show, soccer goals, a swing set and get the basketball/netball courts resurfaced.

Student leaders Alice, Jack and Shareena will discuss these ideas with all the school leaders and Mr Stenhouse.

Hand Gel and Liquid Soap

Following media alerts about the potential dangers of the chemical Triclosan in hand gels and liquid soaps we investigated what we currently use at school. Our hand gel used in classrooms is Aqium and doesn’t include Triclosan. Our liquid soaps in the toilet dispensers also does not include Triclosan.

Deep learning happens when teachers see learning through the eyes of their students and students see themselves as their own teachers.”

Good Standing Recognition 2016

As recognition for exemplary behaviour both in and out of the classroom throughout 2016, students will be presented with either a Gold or Silver Good Standing certificate in Week 10 if they have had no or only one referral to the administration office in Semester 2. Students who have been referred to the administration office on more than one occasion may not have earned any Good Standing certificate for the Semester.

Students who have earned two Gold Good Standing Certificates over the year will also be recognised with a Good Standing 2016 badge in the last week of school for their outstanding efforts and behaviour in 2016. However our Good Standing Policy also states that: “Students who have only been referred to the Administration once during the course of the year may still be eligible for Outstanding Behaviour recognition on an individual basis and this will be discussed by the Administration Team and Class Teacher and take into account the students behaviour after their indiscretion and the severity of the indiscretion.” Class teachers will inform the parents of students who are not receiving a Good Standing 2016 pin this year.

We congratulate all students who have demonstrated exemplary behaviour so far this year. This is the majority of our students and we appreciate their outstanding behaviour, effort and attitude towards their school and own schooling.

Deputy Principal

Positive Behaviour Support

We Need Your Feedback

Positive Behaviour Support

To enhance the strong behaviour processes we already have, Newborough Primary is working towards becoming a PBS school. Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS) is a whole school framework which focuses on promoting positive behaviour throughout the school. PBS is a consultative, collaborative, community owned and evidence based framework. It compliments existing school policies and programmes as well as suiting the specific needs of Newborough Primary. The implementation is a 3 year process as we need to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

In order for PBS to run effectively, the PBS committee will be asking for input from teachers, parents and students. As parents, you will be able to share your thoughts and opinions in the upcoming parent survey which will be distributed this term.

We hope that all parents take advantage of this opportunity and come along on this journey with us.

If there are any parents interested in joining the PBS committee, please come and see John Worthy or Bree O’Dea.

Please be aware that meetings are every Tuesday fortnight from 3:45-4:45pm.

P&C News

On 18 November the P&C held the inaugural Newborough Primary Movie Night. On a beautiful Friday night almost 300 parents and kids enjoyed an evening on the grass watching an “Epic” movie on the big screen. It was an awesome community event and the P&C will be running more of these in 2017.

The Movie Night was proudly sponsored by Scarborough Rotary Club who paid for the big screen and the sound.

If anyone has any questions about the P and C I am available on 0400 791 968 or newboroughpcpres@gmail.com.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below.
