Principal’s Introduction

Pinafore Pirates

What an amazing Musical! I sat next to Mr Max Page from the Gilbert and Sullivan Society who was in raptures about the quality of our school’s performance. He said the performance could not have been bettered by high school students.

The Musical was an excellent example of the wonderful support and opportunities provided by staff, parents and the school community for our students. All credit must go to our sensational students. We had 180 students from years 3 to 6 perform. The main characters really lead the way with outstanding performances. It is terrific to see their confidence and abilities really come to the fore.

A very big thank you to all parents and family members who assisted at home, and were such an appreciative audience. These sort of events can cause a fair bit of stress and tension at home.

It’s always difficult to thank individuals when so many people helped out. Thank you to all. Congratulations Mrs Holmes on a superb job as Director. Your passion, experience and enthusiasm shone through the children’s performances. We are so pleased to now have Mrs Holmes as our permanent Music teacher.

You can also see the influence of Mr Luxton, Mrs O’Dea and Miss Dinsdale (Practice Teacher) in the acting and music. Pulling it all together with great organisation and boundless enthusiasm was the tireless Miss Tucknott with sensational support from so many staff doing such a range of important jobs.

Our parents have also been wonderful making all the dazzling costumes. Thanks to Mrs Harwood, Mrs Pollock, Mrs Thistleton, Mrs Howell, Mrs Kermack and Ms Manowski. Mrs Verhoef did all the make-up for our stars. The colourful props were made by Mrs Wimmer, Mrs Rule, Richards family, Mrs Austin, Mr Riley and Frank our volunteer gardener. We have also had magnificent support behind the scenes with the sound and lighting from Mr James Holmes and Mr Jim Bowman (CSHS). Thanks to Miss Kos and Mrs Appleton who managed the ticketing and Mrs Koerber for the poster graphics. We are all looking forward to seeing the official photos and filming by Mr Neale McQuire and Ms Kate Wilson and their team.

Great job Newborough

Chaplain 2017-2018

The school has been successful in its application for funding the Chaplain program for 2017 and 2018. This is great news as this program, run by YouthCARE, makes a very big difference to the wellbeing of students, staff and parents at our school. Our Chaplain, Miss Ali Dee, is extremely approachable and most helpful supporting and counselling those in need. She adds a terrific vibrancy to the school each Tuesday and Thursday.

We appreciate the proactivity of the School Board who wrote to the Minister of Education earlier this year encouraging the continuation of funding from both State and Federal Governments.

Before School

Our before school play and getting ready is working beautifully. It is a real pleasure to see how well the children play and socialise in the quadrangle before school from 8:15am till 8:30am when it is time to get ready for the school day. Miss Tucknott, Mr Stenhouse and I share this duty whilst teachers prepare lessons and the classroom. It is a great opportunity for us to interact with the children and many parents who are dropping kids off. Feedback from students in the recent Positive Behaviour Survey indicated how much they value this before school play.

This is quite unique for a school and something that sets Newborough apart. This is the first school I have worked in that has afforded this opportunity although I must admit it would not have been possible at schools that have school bus students.

Parents please be aware that once our classes commence we ask that you move away from verandas and classrooms if you wish to have a chat or let littlies play. Conversations and little ones playing near classrooms disturb classes.

Treasure Hunters

The School Board has approved a new after school activity called Treasure Hunters Club to commence in 2017. There will be more information available once we have negotiated the time and venue for the club early next year. Here is some information from YouthCARE.

Treasure Hunters After School Club is coming to Newborough PS in 2017. This club will be run by trained & accredited YouthCARE volunteers one day after school. All children are welcome, regardless of religious or cultural background.

Treasure Hunters will encourage students to see that they have real value and worth and to look for ‘treasure’ in people, in the Bible and in the world around them. The aim of Treasure Hunters is to provide students with the opportunity to explore their values, beliefs and ideas in a creative, fun, and interactive way.

Children will engage in games, drama, puzzles, discussion, art, film and music whilst learning the key beliefs, values and practices of the Christian faith which has profoundly shaped Australian culture. YouthCARE club leaders are trained to be respectful of the diverse cultural and religious backgrounds of the children they educate.

More information about YouthCARE can be found by visiting the link below or by contacting Jan East on 93765012.

Fathering Project Tip

Building up their confidence

  • Teach kids to do things for themselves and not to just rely on you
  • Avoid sarcasm – it can destroy confidence
  • Don’t overuse praise – encouragement works better (Kids need coaches, not fans)
  • Create family celebration for milestones and successes, eg a special meal, with speeches
  • Establish a ‘no put down’ rule about all things
  • Encourage reasonable risk
  • During discipline, show them you believe in them, eg. “This isn’t like you” or “You’re better than that”.

You are, of course, welcome to purchase from other suppliers, however we’d greatly appreciate your support to enable us to purchase additional resources for our school. Please bear in mind that there are some items (eg student diaries, library bags) which are only available for purchase through the school.

Reminders of any outstanding amounts were sent home last week. Please note this statement includes items that may not yet be due for payment, however it is merely a reminder of what will be due within the next few weeks.

Please note: Swimming lessons for PP-Year 6 will be taking near the end of Term 4 with a cost of $50 per student. Term 4 can be quite a busy term excursion-wise – if you’d like to plan ahead and start making partial payments, please speak to our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton.

Families are welcome to make a ‘lump sum’ payment to clear their accounts and assist with planning for the Term or Year. The credit will remain on your child’s account and automatically be allocated to any charges that occur between now and the end of year.

Please let the office know if you would like to take up these options.

As our accounting system can only be set up for individual student accounts, you will need to stipulate which student the amount is to be credited against when you make the direct transfer by using their name as the reference. The accounting system is also unable to provide a printed running credit balance.

Payments can be made via direct deposit (BSB 016 350 Account No: 340871304 – child’s name as reference) or cash/cheque (please place money in envelope available from the class teacher) through your child’s class teacher.

Reporting to Parents - Duplicate Reports

This term, the Second Semester report will be sent home on Monday 12th December. Newborough Primary School will only be sending home ONE copy of the second semester school report per child at the end of the year. It will be the responsibility of the receiving parent to ensure that separated family members see or read the report. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Good Standing Recognition 2016

As recognition for exemplary behaviour both in and out of the classroom throughout 2016, students will be presented with either a Gold or Silver Good Standing certificate in Week 10 if they have had no or only one referral to the administration office in Semester 2. Students who have been referred to the administration office on more than one occasion may not have earned any Good Standing certificate for the Semester.

Students who have earned two Gold Good Standing Certificates over the year will also be recognised with a Good Standing 2016 badge in the last week of school for their outstanding efforts and behaviour in 2016. However our Good Standing Policy also states that: “Students who have only been referred to the Administration once during the course of the year may still be eligible for Outstanding Behaviour recognition on an individual basis and this will be discussed by the Administration Team and Class Teacher and take into account the students behaviour after their indiscretion and the severity of the indiscretion.” Class teachers will inform the parents of students who are not receiving a Good Standing 2016 pin this year.

We congratulate all students who have demonstrated exemplary behaviour so far this year. This is the majority of our students and we appreciate their outstanding behaviour, effort and attitude towards their school and own schooling.

Positive Behaviour Support

We Need Your Feedback

Positive Behaviour Support

To enhance the strong behaviour processes we already have, Newborough Primary is working towards becoming a PBS school. Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS) is a whole school framework which focuses on promoting positive behaviour throughout the school. PBS is a consultative, collaborative, community owned and evidence based framework. It compliments existing school policies and programmes as well as suiting the specific needs of Newborough Primary. The implementation is a 3 year process as we need to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

In order for PBS to run effectively, the PBS committee will be asking for input from teachers, parents and students. As parents, you will be able to share your thoughts and opinions in the upcoming parent survey which will be distributed this term.

We hope that all parents take advantage of this opportunity and come along on this journey with us.

If there are any parents interested in joining the PBS committee, please come and see John Worthy or Bree O’Dea.

Please be aware that meetings are every Tuesday fortnight from 3:45-4:45pm.

Next P&C Meeting

P&C MEETING MONDAY 28TH NOVEMBER – 7PM

The next Newborough Primary School P&C meeting will be held in Week 8, Monday 28th November at 7pm in the School Library.

This will be the last meeting for 2016!

EVERYONE is welcome to attend P&C meetings and we encourage a wide range of parents, representing all years of the school. Even if you can’t make the meeting, we still welcome and encourage feedback, ideas and volunteer support at various P&C events.

There are several parents stepping down from the P&C at the end of 2016, this will be a great opportunity for new parents to become involved. Attending meetings is a great way of finding out what is happening at your school.

Whether you are interested in taking on role, or just finding out more about what we do, come along or get in touch with one of the P&C members.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au or our website by visiting the link below
