Principals Introduction

School Board Elections

As I mentioned in the previous newsletter there are three positions open for elections to become a member of the School Board. Two positions are for parents and one for staff. Nominations closed last week. There was only one staff nomination so I am pleased to announce that Mrs Vicki Tennant will join the Board commencing next year.

There were three parent nominations for the two vacancies, thus requiring a parent election. The nominations are Ian Pollock, Yuliya Novik and Max Bouga. All parents or guardians listed on enrolment declarations are entitled to vote. The voting slip and candidates brochure is attached to this newsletter.

For those parents who are not able to vote via email or choose to do it on paper there are voting slips and a ballot box located in the front office.

Voting closes on Wednesday 16th November at 3:00pm sharp. All votes are scrutineered and counted independently by the Office of our local Scarborough MLA Mrs Liza Harvey.

School Community Survey

All schools are mandated to undertake a National School Opinion Survey with Students (Upper primary years 5 and 6 students), Staff and Parents in 2016. This survey is currently being prepared and should be ready for distribution this week. Respondents will receive the survey via email. If you are not on email or our email list you can request a hard copy from the front office. This will be entered manually.

The school has capacity to add questions to the prescribed ones. The School Board and I are keen to seek feedback on what the collective school community sees as our strengths, areas to improve and focus areas that make or could make our school even better. This is not a popularity vote rather a guide for the Board’s consideration of areas to support and focus our planning as we develop our new Business Plan 2018-2020. Our current Business Plan 2015-2017 runs till the end of 2017.

It is important that we get as many responses as possible so we are inclusive of our school community. The timeline for responses will be relatively short to encourage respondents to get cracking rather than put the survey to one side and so we can reflect and respond with planning. The survey will close on Wednesday 16th November at 3:00pm sharp, the same period as our School Board election closes.

School Review

Last week the school was advised that the Department of Education Services (DES), independent from the Department of Education, will be undertaking the scheduled review of Newborough Primary School on Monday, March 20th and Tuesday March 21st, 2017(Term 1 Week 8). The purpose of the review is to verify the Delivery and Performance Agreement (DPA) have been met; that there are effective processes in place bringing about improved student learning.

The DPA requires that the school makes its own annual assessment of school performance, student improvement targets and priorities as detailed in the Business Plan.

The school’s annual report for 2016 will be made public at the end of term one. It will be included with previous annual reports on our website.

The review includes examination of a range of data and processes by the reviewers prior to their school visit. During this period they develop lines of enquiry that they follow with the school. Key stakeholders from the Board and staff are invited to speak with the reviewers. Following the visit the reviewers present their findings and any recommendations. These are made public and the school is expected to respond.

Facilities Clarification - Fence

Several people have raised concerns about the possibility of Newborough PS getting a fence. At last night’s (31st October) School Board meeting this situation was clarified with reference to any fence being changed to a much broader Safety and Security theme. Whilst there has been some discussion about a fence it is agreed that this is but one possible option of many available.

The Facilities Improvement Sub Committee will look at the Safety and Security issues in the school that have been raised by concerned staff, parents and the Department of Education Facilities Branch and will consult with the school community about the best options for the school. It is intended that the sub-committee gather and provide information about the issues and consult widely on the possible options. The sub-committee will determine the best way to do this on behalf of the school.

The initial sub-committee, currently comprising several Board members will seek to include interested staff and parents to ensure sound representation. Once the initial sub-committee meet I will advise how you might get involved. There is no set time line other than we make the best decisions for the school.

If you wish to discuss any aspects of the above please get in contact with me.

Former Newborough PS Student Head Boy

Congratulations to Liam Birch who was recently announced to be Head Boy at Churchlands Senior High School in 2017. That is a wonderful achievement of which we are very proud.

Kambarang - Wildflower season (season of birth) October - November

During the Kambarang season, we see an abundance of colours and flowers exploding all around us. The yellows of many of the Acacias continue to abound, along with some of the Banksias and many other smaller delicate flowering plants including the Kangaroo Paw and Orchids. Also during this time the Balgas will also start to flower, especially if they've been burnt in the past year or closely shaved.

One of the most striking displays of flowers to be seen during this season will be the "Mooja", or Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia). The bright orange/yellow flowers serve to signal the heat is on its way.

For the animals, October is also the most likely time of the year that you'll encounter a snake as the reptiles start to awaken from their hibernation and look to make the most of the warm to assist them in getting enough energy to look for food. It's also a time that many young families of birds will be singing out for their parents to feed them. Koolbardies (Magpies) will also be out protecting their nests and their babies.

Many things are undergoing transformation with the warm change in the weather.

Longer dry periods accompany a definite warming trend.

Fathering Project Tip 6

Helping kids realise they have a special future

  • Keep telling your kids about their special future, which is different to others, and that:
-you are looking forward to seeing it happen
-it will happen with ups and down
-they may not be famous but will be a gift to the world
  • They are here to live their own lives, not to do what they think you want them to do.
  • Teach them that success cannot accurately be measured by money, fame or power
  • Encourage flexibility in their career choices.

Student Requirements 2017 ( Booklists)

The 2017 School Requirement lists (Booklists) went home recently.

Newborough PS in conjunction with the P&C is organising a school fundraiser by supplying and packing the booklists for 2017. This also provides the school community with Back to School requirements at competitive prices and makes your shopping easier. Support the P&C as fundraising efforts by returning your booklist and FULL PAYMENT (cash, cheque or direct deposit paid into the P&C's account, details below) to the front office by 25 November 2016.

Your packs will be available for collection from the library on
Thursday 30 January 2017 between 9am and 11am.

Electronic versions are available on our website in addition to hard copies from the office, if you have misplaced your copy.

Include your reference details eg. 'Surname and Grade e.g. Roberts Yr 4

As our school’s preferred supplier, this service acts as a fundraiser for our school. You are, of course, welcome to purchase from other suppliers, however we'd greatly appreciate your support to enable us to purchase additional resources for our school. Please bear in mind that there are some items (eg student diaries, library bags) which are only available for purchase through the school.

Statement of Accounts

Many thanks to those who have already paid their accounts in full —it is much appreciated. A Statement of Accounts will be sent home next week for items which may still be outstanding.. Please note that although the account may state that current items are ‘outstanding’, unfortunately this is an automatically-generated document produced through Department of Education financial software and we are unable to change it. We’re hoping that this will be amended in future software updates.

Please note: Swimming lessons for PP-Year 6 will be near the end of Term 4 with a cost of $50 per student. Term 4 can be quite a busy term excursion-wise – if you’d like to plan ahead and start making partial payments, please speak to our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton.

Families are welcome to make a ‘lump sum’ payment to clear their accounts and assist with planning for the Term or Year. The credit will remain on your child’s account and automatically be allocated to any charges that occur between now and the end of year.

Please let the office know if you would like to take up these options.

As our accounting system can only be set up for individual student accounts, you will need to stipulate which student the amount is to be credited against when you make the direct transfer by using their name as the reference. The accounting system is also unable to provide a printed running credit balance.

Payments can be made via direct deposit (BSB 016 350 Account No: 340871304 – child’s name as reference) or cash/cheque (please place money in envelope available from the class teacher) through your child’s class teacher.

It will be the responsibility of the receiving parent to ensure that separated family members see or read the report. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Good Standing Recognition 2016

As recognition for exemplary behaviour both in and out of the classroom throughout 2016, students will be presented with either a Gold or Silver Good Standing certificate in Week 10 if they have had no or only one referral to the administration office in Semester 2. Students who have been referred to the administration office on more than one occasion may not have earned any Good Standing certificate for the Semester.

Students who have earned two Gold Good Standing Certificates over the year will also be recognised with a Good Standing 2016 badge in the last week of school for their outstanding efforts and behaviour in 2016. However our Good Standing Policy also states that: "Students who have only been referred to the Administration once during the course of the year may still be eligible for Outstanding Behaviour recognition on an individual basis and this will be discussed by the Administration Team and Class Teacher and take into account the students behaviour after their indiscretion and the severity of the indiscretion." Class teachers will inform the parents of students who are not receiving a Good Standing 2016 pin this year.

We congratulate all students who have demonstrated exemplary behaviour so far this year. This is the majority of our students and we appreciate their outstanding behaviour, effort and attitude towards their school and own schooling.

Year 4 PEAC Testing results

Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) is a part time supplementary program for students in Years 5 and 6. Students are identified as suited to participation in the PEAC Program through testing in Year 4. In 2016 the tests were developed by the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER). The marking, scoring and data management were completed by ACER. Test administration was conducted by school staff and this year demonstrated once again the high standards of teachers undertaking an important role in this state-wide assessment.

Regions are responsible for managing the pool of students identified as suitable to PEAC through the test process, with each selected student meeting defined criteria.

A total of 22,717 (of 24,647) students participated in the 2016 PEAC assessment between the 1st and 19th August 2016. The broader group of the top 10% of students (90th percentile and above) are identified as gifted in Gagnes Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent. PEAC takes approximately the top 3%.

Individual letters of invitation will be sent to successful students in Week 7. If you are interested in knowing your child’s results please contact Mr Stenhouse at Nick.Stenhouse@education.wa.edu.au to arrange an appointment.

Robogals Incursion

On Wednesday the 12th October the Year 4 girls went to the Robogals Incursion organised by Ms Adams. The instructors asked us to get into 3 groups. In each group we had a robot, a cable and a laptop. The challenge was to program the robot form a square. The next challenge was an obstacle course. The first challenge was really hard but we got there in the end. We learnt how to make the robot move forward backward and how to make it turn. The incursion was run by engineering students at UWA. Their message to us was: there aren't enough girl engineers in the world, we hope you will consider it for a future career.

R O B O GALS!

On Wednesday the 19th of October, the year 5/6 girls went to the science room to participate in an engineering and technology workshop, ROBOGALS! It was a fun two hours for the year 5s and a great hour for the year 6s.

Programming

The people running Robogals handed us computer and they showed us how to use a Lego program as the robot we had been given was made from Lego. They showed us how to make it move and how to change its directions from left to right.

First Hour

In the first hour, we learnt about the different types engineering such as civil engineers and mechanical engineers also we learnt about what technology has become to today. Then we tried to program a robot to drive in a square by working out what the procedure was an exciting experience but was very fun to do. We learnt that trial and error is used in engineering and could fix a problem easier.

Sumo Wrestling

Once the hour was over the year 6s left. We decided to sumo wrestle…with robots of course. We added ultra-sonic sensors (practically eyes for the robot). We got to name our robots and some of the names were Bob the Pegasus, Pickles and MAKECH. We used the Lego program to add movements to our robots so that they would survive the upcoming wrestle. We played two rounds of wrestling and Dance Queen (Isabella, Evie and Chloe) and BeepBop (Holly and Sophie) came out victorious.

Everyone had a great time doing these activities and it was fun to do something that was different. We learnt that only 12% of engineers are females, doing this workshop let the girls explore engineering and technology in a fun, interactive way.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Positive Behaviour Support

We Need Your Feedback

Positive Behaviour Support

To enhance the strong behaviour processes we already have, Newborough Primary is working towards becoming a PBS school. Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS) is a whole school framework which focuses on promoting positive behaviour throughout the school. PBS is a consultative, collaborative, community owned and evidence based framework. It compliments existing school policies and programmes as well as suiting the specific needs of Newborough Primary. The implementation is a 3 year process as we need to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

In order for PBS to run effectively, the PBS committee will be asking for input from teachers, parents and students. As parents, you will be able to share your thoughts and opinions in the upcoming parent survey which will be distributed this term.

We hope that all parents take advantage of this opportunity and come along on this journey with us.

If there are any parents interested in joining the PBS committee, please come and see John Worthy or Bree O’Dea.

Please be aware that meetings are every Tuesday fortnight from 3:45-4:45pm.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Innaloo

Parents from Year 3 to Year 6 helped us sell hot dogs and drinks to customers at the Bunnings, Innaloo Store.

The sunshine and crowds at Bunnings made for another very successful day at the BBQ and we appreciate all the helpers and families that came down for their sausage sizzle.

Sausages sold out just after lunch, so after a quick resupply the sales kept going, in the end raising just under $ 1,500 for our school.

Thank you to all the fantastic helpers on the day.

Thank you for supporting your Newborough Primary School P&C

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:
