Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back Term Four

It is great to be back and lovely to have warmer weather (most days). Term four has many exciting activities and events. This includes the Musical ‘Pinafore Pirates’, swimming lessons, Kindy Expo, Book Fair, volunteer morning tea, presentation night, graduation for our year sixes and all the activities that go along with this, reporting children’s progress, end of year trips, excursions and class activities. The P&C have also planned a family movie night.

We had quite an unsettled term three with so many staff taking long service leave as required by the Department of Education and government. Most of this is now cleared and will be much easier to manage into the future. Welcome back to Mrs Thornett, Mrs Murdoch, Ms Williams, Miss Tucknott and Mrs Tennant. Mrs Boulos is on LSL till week seven so we welcome Mrs Duncan in the year four/fives. Mr Stenhouse will take Mondays as LSL.

Changes to Secondary Schooling in the Western Suburbs

I am writing to let you know that the Minister for Education, the Hon Peter Collier MLC, has announced that a new secondary school will be built on the former City Beach High School site. The new school (planning name City Beach College) will open for Year 7 students in 2020 and expand to Year 12 students by 2025.

The new school is one part of a plan to address secondary student enrolment growth in the western suburbs. Other initiatives include increasing the permanent student capacity of Shenton College, Churchlands Senior High School and Carine Senior High School.

To accommodate a local intake area for City Beach College, the local intake areas for Churchlands Senior High School, Shenton College and Mount Lawley Senior High School will be amended. An announcement about these changes will be made in 2017 for implementation in 2020 when City Beach College opens.

The optional local intake area that provides an entitlement for students to attend either Carine Senior High School or Churchlands Senior High School will also be amended. From 2024, students within this area will have an entitlement to enrol at Carine Senior High School only.

http://www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsonline/local_intake.do?schoolID=4057&pageID=SP09

For the change of local intake areas in 2020, students enrolled at their local secondary school in 2019 will be able to complete their schooling at that school. Younger siblings of these students will be able to commence their secondary schooling at that school as long as the older sibling is also enrolled. Once commenced, siblings will be able to complete their schooling at that school. The same process will apply in 2023 for the change to the Churchlands Senior High School and Carine Senior High School optional local intake area.

You can find a factsheet with highlights of the changes along with more about the western suburbs secondary schooling plan on the Education WA website.

In the meantime, if you have any questions please contact your principal when school resumes in Term 4.

DIRECTOR GENERAL

Student Placements For 2017

If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you please let us know in writing by emailing newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au. This will assist us with planning for 2017.

As is always the case during Term 4, Newborough PS’s class organisation for the following year takes place. A number of considerations are taken into account based on improving student performance. These include: staffing numbers, resourcing, recommended class sizes, a balance of academic abilities within each class, the need to evenly distribute students with special needs (academically, socially and behaviourally), an even distribution of gender, the ability to work independently if placed in a multi-age class.

If you wish to communicate to us your child’s special needs please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 11th November (Week 5). Please note, this information will be deliberated when placing your child however, all preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.

The placement of children and the make-up of classes is made in consultation with teachers. It is not a parent decision. Every child is equally important. The final decision for placements rests with the Principal. If you have any queries or would like to discuss this please contact me to make an appointment.

It is unlikely that the structure of classes, their location and teacher will be presented at the end of this year. With our numbers fluctuating it would be unfair to announce classes this year and then restructure when students return.

Newborough School Board Nominations

Are you interested in contributing to the governance of Newborough Primary School as a parent/legal guardian(Parents from here in) representative on the School Board? Two current parent representative Board members, Ian Pollock and Rebecca Gregory, will shortly complete their three year term opening up two positions on the Board. Late Collection of Students

Our staff are being increasingly asked to relay messages regarding the afternoon pick up of students at the end of the school day. Children should be informed at the beginning of their day, of their afternoon arrangements, for example attending afterschool care, family members/friends picking up. Early pick up of children disrupts the class and the learning of others.

Please note that due to the increased demand at the front office during this time, we may not be able to take messages to your children at the close of school however if parents are running late, the children are taken to the front office by their teachers and are supervised, and parents/guardians called to organise pickup, if necessary. Thank you for your consideration.

Dad’s Tip of the Week

Creating special times with kids

  • Take each of your kids out regularly for ‘dad dates’ (no other adults, no other kids), eg dinner plus movies, beach walks, park, city, show or shopping trips.
  • Spend that date time just listening to them.
  • Be deliberate about creating these special times, eg write such plans in your diary.
  • Take each of them on one on one trips (no other adults, no other kids), eg camping, hiking, road trips, local, interstate or overseas
  • Involve them, and their mother, in the planning of such trips

Professor Bruce Robinson

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Enterprise Fete

On the 20th September, our Year Five and Six held the annual Enterprise Fete. The fete is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop a range of skills, including how to run a successful business, how to work within the constraints of a budget, how to apply for donations and how to engage the public in their endeavours. Students also utilise the Design and Technology approach in constructing their stalls, by investigating and developing possibilities, designing and making adjustments to their ideas and evaluating the success of their endeavours. Many groups wrote letters to local businesses that kindly donated goods in order to keep costs down.

The entire school community was incredibly supportive of the fete and all stalls were consistently busy with customers. Funds raised by the students have subsidised the cost of graduation activities as well as the 2017 camp. The Year Five/Six group is incredibly grateful for the support of parents as well as the wider community through donations of money, time and most importantly their attendance on such a fantastic day.

Positive Behaviour Support

We Need Your Feedback

Positive Behaviour Support

To enhance the strong behaviour processes we already have, Newborough Primary is working towards becoming a PBS school. Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS) is a whole school framework which focuses on promoting positive behaviour throughout the school. PBS is a consultative, collaborative, community owned and evidence based framework. It compliments existing school policies and programmes as well as suiting the specific needs of Newborough Primary. The implementation is a 3 year process as we need to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

In order for PBS to run effectively, the PBS committee will be asking for input from teachers, parents and students. As parents, you will be able to share your thoughts and opinions in the upcoming parent survey which is due to be out in late August. We hope that all parents take advantage of this opportunity and come along on this journey with us.

If there are any parents interested in joining the PBS committee, please come and see John Worthy or Bree O’Dea. Please be aware that meetings are every Tuesday fortnight from 3:45-4:45pm.

RIDE/SCOOT/WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY

Thank you to all the children and parents who participated in the Newborough Primary School Walk Safely to School Day on Thursday 22nd September.

The weather stayed dry and plenty of families walked/rode or scooted their way to school and enjoyed some fresh fruit which was very generously donated by:

SUN FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLES

We hope you took the opportunity to negotiate the obstacle course on the quadrangle, grabbed a Bicycle Identification Card (more available at front office), sticker and some yummy fruit.

Movie Night

Don’t forget to put in your diary the 18th of November for the Newborough Primary School Movie Night. See this newsletter for further details.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzles

We have another sausage sizzle at Bunnings Innaloo on 22 October (this Saturday) where we will be asking for volunteers from Year 3 - Year 6. Shifts will be in 2 hour blocks from 8.30am. Please put some time aside on this day. As most of you know this store is very busy and we will raise significant money on the day.

Volunteers

Don’t forget that when the P&C ask for volunteers we are normally only asking for a few hours help. We aren’t expecting people to spend entire days away from their family. The Bunnings sausage sizzle is a classic example where we had 2 hour shifts during the day. It is a great way to catch up with parents you know or meet parents that you don’t already know.

Facebook

Don’t forget to get onto the Newborough Facebook page for info on what’s happening at our School.

If anyone has any questions about the P and C I am available on 0400 791 968 or newboroughpcpres@gmail.com.

There are several parents stepping down from the P&C at the end of 2016, this will be a great opportunity for new parents to become involved. Attending meetings is a great way of finding out what is happening at your school.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below.
