Principal’s Introduction

End of Term Thank You and Holiday Wishes

What a busy term we have had! A very big thank you to all of our relief staff who have filled in some very big shoes throughout the term. We thank Mrs Dayman who did a great job replacing Ms Williams as Physical Education teacher and did such a superb job with the cross country and athletics carnivals, Ms Danni Beaton who replaced Mrs Tennant and Ms Jill Duncan who was Kindy teacher for Mrs Murdoch and Mrs Thornett.

We will welcome back Mrs Thornett, Mrs Murdoch, Mrs Tennant, Ms Williams and Miss Tucknott. We say goodbye and best wishes to our two fantastic Intern Notre Dame student teachers Miss Zoe Dinsdale (Mrs O’Dea’s class) and Miss Emily Driscoll (Mrs Farmer and Mrs Wimmar’s class).

Next term promises to be another exciting one with the Musical ‘Pinafore Pirates’, swimming lessons, graduation for our year six students and much more. Mrs Boulos will take her well-earned LSL for the first five weeks with Ms Duncan taking the class for this period.

Enjoy a relaxing, safe break and we look forward to another productive and happy term four to finish the year.

Congratulations Newborough

Recently I reported on the excellent performance of our choir and their exemplary behaviour at the WAGSMS concert. It was tremendous to hear that our athletics team not only covered themselves with a fantastic overall performance across the board with their athletic prowess but also shone with great sportsmanship and behaviour. I was thrilled to hear this feedback from parents, staff, senior students and other participating schools. We finished a very creditable third just behind two quite larger schools. Well done to all involved, especially our representative students.

School Board Update

On Monday 12th September we had our Open School Board Meeting. Joining members of the Board were ten interested community members including two parents and eight staff. This meeting provided an opportunity for the school community to see how the Board operates and to engage in discussions and feedback.

Here is a brief summary of major parts of the meeting. There were operational issues discussed such as Workforce Plan, P&C report, Board membership, correspondence etc. that has not been included here.

Board Chair Mr Matt Gaunt: Welcomed community members and our newest Board member Mrs Krys Hiscock who was elected to replace Mr Philip Morgan.

Mr Gaunt presented a summary report of actions, achievements and decisions of the Board so far this year.

NAPLAN Results. The initial results and trends indicate that the school is performing as expected against like schools. We are within the normal range and achieved above the Australian and Western Australian average in all areas tested(See chart). Results in Literacy show a slight upward trend (Reading and Writing) following concerted planning, teacher training, early interventions and consistent teaching methodology in all classrooms. One area that has been identified to focus on is Mathematics with trends still within normal range of expected achievement but moving slightly down. This area is being addressed with the establishment of a priority focus that commenced this year and will be in place for the next few years. With a concerted effort, as we have done with Literacy, we expect the trend in Numeracy to start moving upwards in the coming years.

Facilities. A major component of the open meeting was a presentation and discussions on the future of facilities at the school by Principal Mr John Worthy. In brief the classrooms in the main block are old and not conducive to contemporary learning. There are constant issues of wilful damage, breakdowns and inadequate facilities such as the linear style of classrooms, Administration area, car parking, storage and work spaces.

Staff put forward concerns about safety saying they feel insecure when coming into school early in the morning, late at night and during holidays. There was open discussion about revisiting the idea of a fence around the school. It was agreed that ideas and proposals be taken back to staff and community regarding fencing.

There was general agreement that there needs to be a drive to upgrade facilities. The Board will establish a sub-committee representative of staff and the school community to further this. Opportunity to be on this committee will be offered via the newsletter, P&C and staff meetings. Matt Gaunt and John Worthy will develop a ‘terms of reference’ for the sub-committee and present this at the next Board meeting.

Ocean Net Schools. Mr Worthy reported that he had reinvigorated the principal’s Ocean Net Schools (Doubleview, Scarborough, Yuluma, Deanmore and Newborough) meetings by hosting a meeting at Newborough recently.

Ocean Net schools are looking at partnering to support each other in the Independent Public Schools review process (Four of the five schools including Newborough are due for their review in 2017), joint strategies to support Aboriginal students and families, development of a joint process to support student leadership and training, explore the possibility to set up an Ocean Net Band/Ensemble probably at Newborough PS and joint Board training.

Sustainability Committee Report. Mrs Balding presented information on the progress of sustainability strategies in the school including organic bins, worm farm, gardening club, recycling paper and batteries.

School Development Days. (SDD) The Board endorsed the following School Development days for 2017. From parent feedback we have only one SDD mid-term next year and have agreed to all schools in the Churchlands Network having the same dates to assist parents with students at multiple schools.

Term One - Monday 30 and Tuesday 31st January (Students commence Wednesday 1 February
Term Two - Monday 24 April Students commence Wednesday 26 April following ANZAC Day
Friday 2 June Extend long weekend for parents
Term Three - Monday 17 July Students commence Tuesday 18 July
Term Four - Monday 9 October Students commence Tuesday 10 October
Friday 15 December Students finish on Thursday 14 December

Student Safety

With the holidays nearly upon us it is timely to reinforce safety for students at school, home and whilst travelling to and from school. This is our focus for the last two days of term 3.

The P&C have organised another Walk, Ride and Scoot to school morning event on Thursday, 22 September. This will include a range of fun activities, fruit and a new initiative to record your bike details on a special register card.

Our Student Leaders have initiated research into the dangers of crossing busy Sackville Terrace on Alice Street to get to school. They will be doing a count of students and getting feedback to support a case for a Traffic Warden Crossing or other safe crossing method. Great initiative student leaders and Mr Stenhouse.

Also on Thursday we have organised for the Constable Care team to come to school in the afternoon to reinforce a range of safety messages with junior students including Stranger Danger, Road Safety and Travel Safety.

On Friday 23 September, The P&C, who run our Safety House program, have organised for our nine Safety House Volunteers and Traffic Warden to be guests at the assembly followed by a thank you morning tea hosted by Miss Watson’s Year 2/3 class after the assembly in the Library. They have made invitation cards for our guests and will host our valued volunteers. I will talk to the whole school about the great work of our safety volunteers at the assembly and how children can access the Safety Houses when needed. To learn more or be involved, you can read more in the P&C section of this newsletter.

Parents can assist with the Safety House and travel messages by walking to school and pointing out the Safety Houses and talking about what to do if children feel unsafe. Reinforcing safe crossing of roads, being vigilant about strangers and walking sensibly and quickly to and from school are all great messages to get across.

Safety Houses

The Safety House Association of Western Australia Inc. was set up in October 1983 and is an Incorporated Association with full support and co-operation from the WA Department of Education and the Western Australian Police. Local Safety House Volunteers offer a safe haven for students and family members who feel insecure, bullied or lost. You can recognise a Safety House by the yellow house logo located near the letter box.

All Safety House WA volunteers are subject to a mandatory rigorous continuous police check as a pre-condition of being registered as a volunteer with the Association. There is no charge to the applicant or to the Safety House Committee for this police check and the check is continually reviewed until the applicant leaves the Safety House program.

If you get the chance to say hello and introduce your child to Safety House volunteers they would be very appreciative and children will have added confidence at any point of need.

"There is nothing more precious to a parent than a child, and nothing more important to the future than the safety of all our children."

Term Accounts

Term accounts for Term 4 have been sent home only to those classes where there is more than one incursion and/or excursion occurring. Appropriate incursion and/or excursion notes have been distributed to all other classes. Please follow payment instructions and deadlines stipulated on each note. If you’d like to enter a payment plan, please contact Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, on 9446 1025.

Late Collection of Students

Our staff are being increasingly asked to relay messages regarding the afternoon pick up of students at the end of the school day. Children should be informed at the beginning of their day, of their afternoon arrangements, for example attending afterschool care, family members/friends picking up. Early pick up of children disrupts the class and the learning of others.

Please note that due to the increased demand at the front office during this time, we may not be able to take messages to your children at the close of school however if parents are running late, the children are taken to the front office by their teachers and are supervised, and parents/guardians called to organise pickup, if necessary. Thank you for your consideration.

Dad's Tip of the Week

Letting Kids Know Your Love is Unconditional

  • Tell your kids that your love does not depend upon their performance at school or sport.
  • Tell them too that it doesn’t depend on their music, friends, beliefs or behaviour.
  • Make a clear distinction between not loving what they say or do versus not loving them.
  • Don’t confuse unconditional love with trying to be their ‘pal rather than their parent.
  • Surprise them by doing random, unpredicted kind acts for them
  • Avoid using the word ‘but’ eg I love you but…”

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Positive Behaviour Support

We Need Your Feedback

Positive Behaviour Support

To enhance the strong behaviour processes we already have, Newborough Primary is working towards becoming a PBS school. Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS) is a whole school framework which focuses on promoting positive behaviour throughout the school. PBS is a consultative, collaborative, community owned and evidence based framework. It compliments existing school policies and programmes as well as suiting the specific needs of Newborough Primary. The implementation is a 3 year process as we need to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

In order for PBS to run effectively, the PBS committee will be asking for input from teachers, parents and students. As parents, you will be able to share your thoughts and opinions in the upcoming parent survey which is due to be out in late August. We hope that all parents take advantage of this opportunity and come along on this journey with us.

If there are any parents interested in joining the PBS committee, please come and see John Worthy or Bree O’Dea. Please be aware that meetings are every Tuesday fortnight from 3:45-4:45pm.

Ride/ School/Walk to school Day

A reminder that Newborough Primary School will be having a Ride/Scoot/Walk Safely to School day on Thursday 22nd September.

There will be a ‘bike obstacle track’ to practice your riding/scooting skills, fresh fruit and stickers available.

Walk Safely to School Day is an annual, national event for all Primary School Children which was held in Term 2. This term, we are encouraging children and their families to commute to school by riding their bike/scooter or walking.

The objectives of this day are to:

  • Encourage parents/carers to walk to school with primary school age children
  • Promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits
  • Help children develop vital road crossing skills
  • Help ensure children up to the age of 10 years hold an adult's hand when crossing the road
  • Reduce car dependency and traffic congestion
  • Reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles
  • Promote the use of public transport

We look forward to seeing all participants in the Quadrangle.

Fresh fruit has been kindly donated by Sun Valley Fresh, Doubleview.

Pottery Class – Term 3

One pottery class this term of children doing pottery for a second, even a third time, has concluded and as you can see they have produced some great work.

Those attending term 4 classes will have already received their forms and payment slips. I look forward to seeing you all in the science/ art room next term.

Pam Wimmer

Students Thoughts :

I think pottery is fun and spectacular. I like it because you get to make lots of cool animals and colour them with fantastic amazing colours.

Ibrahiem yr3

It is fun but having to make sure you cover over the cracks is kind of tricky. My favourite thing I made was the double thumb pot Carnotaurus ( a kind of carnivorous dinosaur).

Benji yr4

I like pottery because you can make lots of different things and you can take it home.

Isla yr4

I love pottery because you can create animals or pots out of clay and you can glaze them.

Holly yr4

Pottery! I love pottery, I love cake, I love yoga, I love computer and I love animals. I made lots of animals at pottery.

Konnichi wa.

Term 3 has been an engaging term in the Japanese classroom and more opportunity for students to see how language and culture are closely connected in authentic contexts. First we welcomed Anne and Toshi for a a whole school Taiko Drum and Flute performance. We thoroughly enjoyed their skill and joined together with them for an impromptu Newborough student talent performance.

Year 3-6 classes have had the opportunity to engage with Japanese calligraphy and wrote the beautiful character ‘kokoro’ which means heart. A huge thank you to two parents, Tomoko Otake and Sayuri Shigemitsu who assisted and demonstrated for the calligraphy classes. Their excellent models and instruction enabled Newborough winners from each year level to be chosen and submitted to the state competition. In Term 4 we will be notified of the state winners.

Our Year 5 and 6 students through the BYO device initiative have continued to receive and write email through the Palaygo email project. This is a way to develop international friendships and learn more about Japan and its culture. Year 5 and 6 students have been encouraged with parental support to enable Japanese language on their device so that they may create their own documents in Japanese. If you are able to assist your child to facilitate this, in Term 4 the students will be able to use the word processing skill to create documents across the range of the Office suite in Japanese.

Room 11 wrote poetry inspired by the poem ‘Kim’s Collection” by David Bateson. The poem by Bateson is about a dog that collects flotsam from the beach for his collection. I don’t know why it reminded me of children’s trays.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:
