Principal's Introduction

WAGSMS Concert

Congratulations to Mrs Holmes and the seventy five choir students who performed magnificently at the recent Western Australian Government Schools Music Society concert at the Crown Theatre on Thursday 25th August. The choir performed three songs 'Pinafore Pirates', 'Irish Stew' and 'The Pirate Queen' from our upcoming Musical. The standard of performance was exceptional and in my slightly biased view the best on the night. Thank you to all those who assisted the children preparing costumes, encouraging them, getting to practice, staff for supervising and helping out and wonderful parents attending the night. It was terrific and a real teaser for the Musical to come.

Athletics Carnivals

Last Friday's athletics carnival was superb. We were very luck with the delightful weather. The children participated brilliantly with very strong competition and excellent sportsmanship. A very big thank you to all the staff who once again teamed together supporting all the children and events with training and running off events and extra efforts on the day. Mrs Dayman did a sensational job carrying the expectations of our much loved carnival and even adding a few ideas she brought to the school with her great experience. We are so lucky to have Mrs Dayman join us in Ms William's absence. Thank you to our fantastic parents, grandparents and family members who cheered the athletes and all those who helped in so many different ways. The Kindy Café run by the Kindy classes and the P&C Sausage Sizzle did very well both financially and in support of hungry tummies.

We look forward to our elite athletes representing the school at next week's interschool carnival.

School Facilities and Contemporary Learning

Think - Create - Collaborate – Our school motto.

I wonder if our facilities, especially the older classrooms really allow the contemporary learning required of our students today and for their workplaces and work styles in the future. Do they allow thinking, creativity and very importantly collaboration? Do they support the clear learning approaches that we want for our children that is outlined in our Business Plan?

Our 1950's classrooms were designed for an era that reflects an industrial past and based on designs from the military with barracks and a quadrangle arrangement. These classrooms have served us well for many years and many people have fond memories of their time in them, as I do. By design they don't have connection for classes to work collaboratively, wet areas, staff preparation areas, adequate storage and ease for technologies to be used effectively. They are hard to heat or cool. Lighting is dingy and inefficient. The size and shape restricts how you can creatively put furniture to allow groups to work and create spaces for students to sit in small groups or class groups. We do have fantastic newish facilities such as our lovely Library, the Music and Science classrooms, the undercover area, the Early Childhood block and Kindergarten. The school grounds are beautifully grassed, have fantastic playgrounds including the exciting new Nature Playground (Koorlangka Marlak Kadadjiny or Children Bush Learning) and have superb trees. The layout of the school means there is considerable area that is not accessible for students such as the frontage on Newborough Street. Many of these features are result of our brilliantly supportive P&C. Our connection to the City of Stirling parks on the corner of Jackson and Wilding Streets and the Karrinyup Recreation Centre provides a seamless series of parklands enjoyed by the whole community.

We seem to be forever attempting to fix problems such as the leaking tiles on the roof, collapsing ceilings, replacing veranda boards and old carpet. The administration area is woefully undersized, cramped, lacking in crucial facilities like a sick room, is difficult to enter and impossible if you are in a wheelchair or have a disability, has limited meeting and work spaces for our Deputies, Manager Corporate Services, School Officer, Chaplain and School Psych. The open nature of the school and the inviting natural setting is a huge asset but it does invite unwanted visitors who cause considerable vandalism and damage that provides great stress on everyone and costs a lot to repair. Our cleaning and gardening staff feel unsafe entering our school grounds early in the morning, often when it is still dark. Other staff express concern for their safety when coming to school during weekends and holiday breaks. We continue to debate whether we should fence the school or at least the buildings precinct.

We don't have a single car parking bay on our school site. The school and Department of Education have relied on the good will of the City of Stirling who kindly put in street parking used by visitors, staff and local community. There is not one disability parking bay for the school, limited pathway access and ramps. We don't have disability toilets. For anyone entering the school in a wheelchair or has limited capacity to walk they need to enter the school via the quadrangle area to report to the front office as required to register as a visitor. In a wheelchair it would be impossible to open the front door or rear door of the administration area without assistance. This was brought to our attention recently by a principal of a nearby school who advised that he had an 'Out of Boundary' request from a wheelchair bound parent living in our school boundary who wanted to enrol their child at Newborough but couldn't get into the school office. The openness of the school means many parents and visitors enter the school from different directions before signing in as visitors. This exposes students to visitors prior to registering at the front office. Whilst this has not been a problem it could if someone with ill intent chose to enter the school.

I believe it is time to be proactive advocating for a comprehensive upgrade of facilities rather than a band-aid approach fixing one problem at a time. Each issue can be looked at separately and no doubt be addressed one at a time. This is very time consuming, disjointed and I believe a much costlier approach in the long run.

I encourage the School Board to begin the process of discussion and if agreeable support for this initiative. It is likely we need to set up a School Board sub committee to oversee and manage the process.

It is timely to start this now. It will require considerable consultation and clear understanding and agreement to progress. If we are to convince the Department of Education that our facilities need an upgrade and do this in one go rather than a series of expensive fixes we need to move now. It may take several years to gain approvals and funding. One approach, in consultation and agreement with the Facilities Program Delivery Branch of the Department of Education, could be to fund an educational architect to scope several options that meet the needs of our school and values the wishes of the school community and standards of the Department of Education. The school is prepared to contribute funding this process. One option that springs to mind is to build classrooms and an Administration entrance, car parks etc. on the current school oval. During the build the school would still operate on the current site. Once completed the older buildings be demolished and this area be reinstated as the new school oval. This type of approach has been used in in other locations including Deanmore Primary School. There may well be several options that a consultative architect will come up with.

I encourage parents, community and staff to attend the open School Board meeting on Monday 12th September commencing at 7:00pm to be part of the initial discussions on this topic.

Open Board Meeting

This year's open Newborough Primary School Board meeting is on Monday 12th September commencing at 7:00pm in the Library. Parents, staff and community members are encouraged to come along and see first-hand the governance of our school and join in discussions. Time has been set aside to discuss the very important issue of school facilities mentioned in the previous article. We hope you can join us

Start Times

As spring and summer arrives we are noticing several students arriving earlier to school. Please be reminded that the earliest students can arrive and be supervised in the quadrangle area is 8:15am unless they are doing a special supervised program such as the choir, cross country, athletics etc. From 8:15am to 8:30am we have the Administration team providing duty of care in the quadrangle area. Classrooms do not open prior to 8:30am. This is precious teacher preparation time. At 8:30am classroom doors open and children in the quadrangle and those arriving go straight to classes to prepare for the day. Classes start at 8:40am promptly. After 8:40am children arriving are considered late for school. Lateness impacts on all children's learning as they disrupt the class, not just their own learning.

Fathering Project

Dad's Date for the diary. The Newbro Dad's team will be holding their first event shortly. Message from Cameron Leckey. I'm pleased to announce that our first official outing will be a Father / Child get together on Sunday 18th September at 3pm so please save this date. The venue is the park / playground on the corner of Wilding Street and Jackson Ave (next to the school). More info to come later.

Dads Tip of the Week

Show Kids You Love Then

  • Spending fun times with your kids is the simplest way to show you love them
  • Show love phgysically by appropriate hugs
  • Go out of your way to do things with and for them, especially if you are busy (yhey notice)
  • It is especially important to not withdraw showing appropriate affection when daughters go through adolescence
  • Be with them at crisis times, eg. when they are sick – don't always leave it to their mother to take them to the doctor

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Illness

When your child has been sick it is sometimes hard to know when they should return to school. For some illnesses, there are exclusion periods (published by the Health Department) to help prevent, the spread of these infections to others.

Please see below for information relating to the most common infections and diseases seen at school. For further information please contact your doctor or the Department of Health WA.

  • Diarrhoea – exclude until 24 hours after diarrhoea has ceased.
  • Head Lice – exclude until after treatment has commenced and live lice removed.
  • Influenza (Flu) – exclude until symptoms resolved (Fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, sore throat and cough)
  • Ringworm – exclude until person has received anti-fungal treatment for 24 hours.
  • Conjunctivitis – exclude until discharge from eyes has ceased.
  • Gastroenteritis (including nausea/vomiting) – Do not go to work or school for at least 24 hours after symptoms have finished, or 48 hours if you work in or attend a high risk setting, such as health care, residential care or child care, or handle food as part of your job.

Ride/ School/Walk to school Day

Newborough Primary School will be having a Ride/Scoot/Walk Safely to School day on Thursday 22nd September.

Walk Safely to School Day is an annual, national event for all Primary School Children which was held in Term 2. This term, we are encouraging children and their families to commute to school by riding their bike/scooter or walking.

The objectives of this day are to:

  • Encourage parents/carers to walk to school with primary school age children
  • Promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits
  • Help children develop vital road crossing skills
  • Help ensure children up to the age of 10 years hold an adult's hand when crossing the road
  • Reduce car dependency and traffic congestion
  • Reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles
  • Promote the use of public transport

We look forward to seeing all participants in the Quadrangle on Thursday 22nd September for some fresh fruit before school, kindly donated by Sun Valley Fresh, Doubleview.

Factions Sports Carnival

Last Friday, 2nd September the school held it's Faction Sports Carnival. Thankfully the weather was on our side, no rain and great conditions for participation. As always it was very well supported by the parents and community. Students from all factions put in a tremendous effort in both the individual events and in the team games. The day ran very smoothly and we give a huge thank you to all the parents who kindly volunteered their time and expertise to assist throughout the day. Without volunteers taking on positions such as starter, recorders, judges and announcers we wouldn't be able to get through the events so quickly.

We would like to congratulate all the students on their efforts throughout the carnival and would especially like to recognise the following champion and runner up champions on their achievements:

Newborough Netball 2016

Congratulations to all the girls who competed in the 2016 Perth Netball Association Winter netball competition. We had 3 teams compete in the Net Set Go program. These girls are new to the game and it was amazing to watch them improve over the season. Our gorgeous year 2's participates in a 10-week training program, learning the basics of the sport in preparation for the competition in year 3. The years 5 and 6 teams participated in the Junior comp, with the year 5 winning the Division 3 premiership and the year 6's winning the Division 6 premiership.

Congratulations girls you should be very proud.

Thank you also to all the coaches and managers who volunteer their time.

P&C News

Bunnings Sausage Sizzles

Thanks to the Kindy, PP, Year 1 and 2 volunteers who came down and helped at the sausage sizzle at Bunnings Osborne Park last Saturday. It was a beautiful day and we sold over 340 hot dogs plus some drinks raising money for the P&C.

We have another sausage sizzle at Bunnings Innaloo on 22 October where we will be asking for volunteers from Year 3 - Year 6. Shifts will be in 2 hour blocks from 8.30am. Please put some time aside on this day. As most of you know this store is very busy and we will raise significant money on the day.

Volunteers

Don't forget that when the P&C ask for volunteers we are normally only asking for a few hours help. We aren't expecting people to spend entire days away from their family. The Bunnings sausage sizzle is a classic example where we had 2 hour shifts during the day. It is a great way to catch up with parents you know or meet parents that you don't already know.

Where Does the Money Go??

Newborough Primary P&C is in a strong financial position. People often ask what are we spending our money on? Our current projects are:

  1. Providing funds and volunteers for the Nature Play area; and
  2. Providing funds for IT and computers in the school

We are also looking at building a new kitchen outside Mrs Tennants Year 1 classroom.

If you have any ideas on what you think the school might need please come and attend one of our P&C meetings in the first week of each month or contact me on my email or phone below.

Facebook

Don't forget to get onto the Newborough Facebook page for info on what's happening at our School.

If anyone has any questions about the P and C I am available on 0400 791 968 or newboroughpcpres@gmail.com

Athletics Faction Carnival – Thank You!!

We wish to thank all the families and staff who purchased a hotdog/drink and supported our Faction Carnival Sausage Sizzle raising over $900 for our School P&C.

Special thanks to Brian Harwood who cooked all of the 300 plus sausages and the many parent helpers who made it such a success.

Our student leaders did a fabulous job of selling the tattoos, and the kids looked great with their faction colour hair dos.

Congratulations Newborough, on another fabulous sports day, and thank you for supporting the Newborough Primary School P&C.

Well done Corbett!

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle – Osborne Park

Parents from Kindy to Year 2 helped us sell hot dogs and drinks to customers at the Bunnings Osborne Park Store.

The great weather, and last minute Father's Day purchases made for a very successful day at the BBQ and we appreciate all the helpers and families that came down for their sausage sizzle raising several hundred dollars for our school P&C.

We look forward to another successful Sausage Sizzle on Saturday 22nd October supported by our Year 3 to 6 families at the Bunnings Innaloo Warehouse.

Thank you for supporting your Newborough Primary School P&C

School Banking

School Banking Hours

We are open for banking every Wednesday morning in the school library, 8:15 - 8:40am where we have Year 5's who volunteer as tellers.

Thank you

It is with a huge thank you to Megan Cowan who has volunteered to take on the coordinating of the banking. I have enjoyed getting to know all the children and parents who bank but it is time to move on and let someone else have a go.

Volunteers

If your child banks, please consider volunteering to supervise the capable Yr5 tellers, we are still short of parents to volunteer - it is not difficult, younger children can read books and it means we won't have to consider stopping the banking if we can't get more help.

Please speak to Megan or Bec if you are interested.

Join our school banking

If your child or children are interested in being part of school banking, all you need to do is go to your local Commonwealth bank with your ID and child's birth certificate to open an account.

They will then be provided with all they need to begin banking at school.

Happy banking!
Bec Gregory

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a 'Safety House', if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
IT'S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based "Good Neighbour" program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It's easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is
