Principal’s Introduction

Student Leaders Round Table Luncheon

Under the tutelage of Mr Stenhouse our student leaders run a Round Table Luncheon twice a term with students from different year levels. The luncheon is held in the Principal’s office and is facilitated by our student leaders. This time it was the year twos who shared their view of the school and made suggestions from a student perspective on how we can make our school an even better place. Representing the year twos were Taylah Halloran (Miss Watson’s class), Skye van der Meer (Mrs Hughes) and Will Drysdale (Ms Murray). They consulted with classmates representing their views and ideas whilst enjoying a yummy, healthy lunch. Alice Harwood and Shireena Parry led the way asking what our year twos liked about the school. They like all the teachers, Art in the Art room, great playgrounds, making friends and the sports programs. Their favourite subjects were Art, Reading, Music and Phys. Ed, Will said he really likes Maths like his dad. Mr Worthy took notes from the luncheon that will be used by our student leaders in their discussions next time they meet. There were plenty of great ideas on what we could change including; building a climbing wall, making a tree house and cubby house, have sushi available every day in the canteen, have a sick room and a nurse to look after sick kids, introduce green scarves, gloves and umbrellas as part of our uniform, open the Library at lunchtime, put in a bike and scooter track and give our new Nature Playground a Noongar name. (Great idea!!).

I am sure some of these great ideas will be adopted and make a difference for all students. Well done year twos and student leaders.

Champion Dads and the Fathering Project

Last Tuesday 38 dads went along to the Innaloo Sportsman Club to hear about The Fathering Project and set up a team of Champion Newborough Dads to lead engaging projects supporting fathering and kids at our school. The two key speakers, Paul Valentino and James Sheridan are both dads from nearby Gwelup Primary School and are key figures in the Gwelup Champion Dads team. They do an activity at least once per term where dads and father figures get together to share and enjoy quality time together. Activities like a barbecue, beach day, hiking, camping, going to the pictures, quiz night and much more.

The Fathering Project aims to inspire and equip fathers and father figures to engage with their kids. We know that an effective father has a profound impact on kids. Our vision (The project) is to ensure every child in Australia has an effective father or father figure. The project was initiated by Professor Bruce Robinson, a Perth based medical practioner and University of WA lecturer who recognised that many of his terminally ill patients, especially dads, last wish was that they had spent less time at work and more quality time with their kids. From this the Fathering Project grew.

Everyone benefits when dads are involved with the kids.

If you would like to know more go to the Fathering Project website.

Keep an eye out for invites to activities from our Champion Newborough Dads.

Dads Tip of the Week (A new feature in our newsletter)

From the Blue Book of tips for Fathers and Father-Figures by Professor Bruce Robinson

Tip One

Saying ‘I love you to your kids

  • Tell your kids you love them often
  • Make eye contact and use their names
  • Surprise them sometimes by telling them when they don’t expect it
  • Don’t use empty, repetitive words – think of different ways to tell them you love them, as much as ‘you are more precious than diamonds etc.
  • Write it in cards, notes, emails and text messages
  • Love includes always ‘being there’ for them, no matter what – tell them that you will be
  • Always try to keep in mind what children really need from fathers

Illness

When your child has been sick it is sometimes hard to know when they should return to school. For some illnesses, there are exclusion periods (published by the Health Department) to help prevent, the spread of these infections to others.

Please see below for information relating to the most common infections and diseases seen at school. For further information please contact your doctor or the Department of Health WA.

  • Diarrhoea – exclude until 24 hours after diarrhoea has ceased.
  • Head Lice – exclude until after treatment has commenced and live lice removed.
  • Influenza (Flu) – exclude until symptoms resolved (Fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, sore throat and cough)
  • Ringworm – exclude until person has received anti-fungal treatment for 24 hours.
  • Conjunctivitis – exclude until discharge from eyes has ceased.
  • Gastroenteritis (including nausea/vomiting) – Do not go to work or school for at least 24 hours after symptoms have finished, or 48 hours if you work in or attend a high risk setting, such as health care, residential care or child care, or handle food as part of your job.

Positive Behaviour Support

We Need Your Feedback

Positive Behaviour Support

To enhance the strong behaviour processes we already have, Newborough Primary is working towards becoming a PBS school. Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS) is a whole school framework which focuses on promoting positive behaviour throughout the school. PBS is a consultative, collaborative, community owned and evidence based framework. It compliments existing school policies and programmes as well as suiting the specific needs of Newborough Primary. The implementation is a 3 year process as we need to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

In order for PBS to run effectively, the PBS committee will be asking for input from teachers, parents and students. As parents, you will be able to share your thoughts and opinions in the upcoming parent survey which is due to be out in late August. We hope that all parents take advantage of this opportunity and come along on this journey with us.

If there are any parents interested in joining the PBS committee, please come and see John Worthy or Bree O’Dea. Please be aware that meetings are every Tuesday fortnight from 3:45-4:45pm.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

P&C News

Quiz Night

As most of you know we had our major fundraiser on 30 July. The 80’s quiz night was a huge success with everyone getting into the spirit of the night by dressing up as their favourite 80’s characters. As can be seen from the photos these dressups ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous.

We had approximately 280 people attend on the night with parents, staff and local members of the community having a rollicking good time – in fact there was many of these people dancing right up until we closed the venue at midnight.

Not only was it an awesome night but we raised approximately $15,000 for the P&C which was an almighty effort for one evening.

I would like to thank all of the people who contributed on the night with their time and/or donations for prizes or raffles. These include but are not limited to the following:

Movie Night

We will be having a movie night on a Friday night in Term 4. It will be held on the Jim Hazlitt Field at the school. More info will follow in the coming weeks.

Chemmart Doubleview

Chemmart Doubleview have been an amazing sponsor of our school over the last few years. Once again they had a promotions in June and July this year and have donated over $800 to the school. Please support local businesses who support your school.

Facebook

Don’t forget to get onto the Newborough Facebook page for info on what’s happening at our School.

If anyone has any questions about the P and C I am available on 0400 791 968 or newboroughpcpres@gmail.com .

School Banking - Wed mornings 8:10am - 8:40am

I have been coordinating the school banking for around 5 years and have been thinking it is time to pass the role on. As I am now working with early starts, I am urgently looking for someone to take this role on, it is unfortunate that this has now become a bit of a priority.

The running of the mornings have been organised for the whole term as have the Yr 5 tellers.

It is not an arduous job and I have enjoyed getting to know so many students and parents.

We also need to recruit more parents to oversee the mornings on a rotation system. Again, this is not an arduous role.

Regrettably if we can't find a volunteer to coordinate the school banking, it might have to stop temporarily.

Please see Bec Gregory if you are interested, I won't dump and run! I am very happy to help you until the role is comfortable.

Responsible Runners Scarborough Beach

Hello from a Wembley Downs resident, a local mum to a five year old girl, and the Founder of Responsible Runners Scarborough (a group of volunteers who organise monthly beach cleans around the northern beaches area the last Sunday of every month- Trigg, City Beach, Scarborough, North Beach, etc).

We meet the last Sunday of every month from 9:30am for about 1-2 hours and comb the beach with a friendly group of around 10-20 volunteers. We provide reusable bags and gloves (donated by Keep Australia Beautiful) and the group usually sticks around after to count and sort our rubbish and send data to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative who collect research on beach pollution for all of Australia. It's a lot of fun and we usually have a local cafe donate hot drinks after (BYO reusable cups/mugs for your drink). It's a mix of families, motivated uni students, beach lovers, surfers, and recent retirees but everyone and anyone is welcomed! And no- nobody runs (though the original founders of the group in Sydney were all soft sand beach runners). I also possess a Senior First Aid Certificate, a national police clearance, and a working with children check and our events are fully insured through the Keep Australia Beautiful adopt a spot program.

This month in particular we are hosting an event for the national Keep Australia Beautiful Week in conjunction with the volunteers from Keep Australia Beautiful.

Event details as follows:

What: Community beach clean @ Trigg in honour of Keep Australia Beautiful Week

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood.

The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email Halijah: halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Safety House Coordinator: Halijah Hyder

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:

http://www.safetyhousewa.org.au/
