Principal’s Introduction

Busy Week

We have a very busy and engaging school and last week proved this in abundance. Firstly we had the brilliant P&C Quiz Night. This lively, entertaining event held in the Scarborough Community Centre was heaps of fun with a great balance of questions giving every table a chance to succeed. I suspect for some the 80’s dress up theme just meant rummaging into the depths of the wardrobe and for others the chance to really dress up and re-live an exciting period of life. It was heaps of fun with raffles, auctions and challenges adding to the spice of the night. Many thanks to all our valued sponsors and donators that made the prizes so good. Congratulations to MC, Neale McQuire, and the whole organising team. Whilst a final fund raising figure is still being reconciled it is thought to be in the vicinity of just below $15 000.

The busy week continued on Monday with a P&C Meeting covering a lot of ground supporting the school.

On Wednesday the P&C ran the student disco in the undercover area. The theme was to dress as an Olympic athlete. The costumes were terrific with lots of variety and imagination. The children had a great time thanks to the wonderful organisation by Halijah Hyder and engaging DJ, Mark Blatchford, who got everyone up and dancing – even the teachers and staff. Thank you to all the parents who accompanied the children and to all the staff who came along. The children’s behaviour and participation was exceptional.

At the school level we conducted the Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) testing with year fours. The test papers have been sent away for marking and hopefully we will get the results in a few weeks’ time.

On Wednesday students attended a Taiko drumming workshop with Sensei Whittle and Sensei Holmes. We will look at cranking the drumming up when the Musical and athletics events have concluded.

Throughout the week students presented their Speak Up talks in their classrooms with students selected to go into the finals on Thursday (Years 3 and 4) and Friday (Years 5 & 6). Mrs Boulos, who did a superb job coordinating the event, will make a special announcement of our overall winner who will then go onto a district semi-final with other local schools.

On Thursday our interschool cross country team performed exceptionally well at Butlers Reserve. From all accounts our students performed exceptionally well in some really testing wet weather and lead all schools in good sportsmanship and behaviour.

With all the action of last week we are looking to settle the school down and bring our focus back to work in the classroom.

Ocean Net School Board Meeting

Last Friday evening our School Board hosted the Ocean Net group of Independent Public School Boards to share the work of each Board and to see if there are any areas we can join together and support each other. This initiative came from joint sessions between our own Board and Deanmore Board last year. The other schools included Yuluma PS, Scarborough PS, Doubleview PS and Deanmore PS. Our School Board Chair, Matt Gaunt, lead discussions. It was very interesting to hear how each Board has evolved and the way they provide governance to their school. There were several areas that we are looking at sharing ideas including some excellent work on reconciliation by Scarborough PS, induction programs by Newborough PS and a joint opportunity to combine through the School Board Development Program that will shortly be offered by the Department of Education.

School Board Election

Following nominations for the vacant parent representative position on the School Board we received only one nomination therefore Mrs Krys Hiscock is duly elected. Krys brings great enthusiasm and a fresh range of skills and perspective of a new family to Newborough. We welcome her to the Board.

Krys Hiscock

My name is Krys and I wish to nominate for the School Board. Our family is new to the Newborough community, with our daughter in Pre-primary. The positive and welcoming attitude of the school community has prompted me to become more involved at Newborough.

My background is a nurse specialising in haematology and research. I am currently a Project Manager for The Perth Blood Institute (PBI) coordinating multicentre clinical research. My proudest achievement at PBI has been setting up the trials centre from scratch, implementing a Quality Assurance program and Standard Operating Procedures to comply with the complex regulatory requirements of human research.

I have just completed a Graduate Certificate in Business, which has consolidated my knowledge of contracts, accounting, organisational behaviour and marketing.

Within the community, I have been an active member of the Girl Guides for over 20 year as a leader. It was an honour to be the recipient of the Banksia Award at this year’s State Award ceremony. The Banksia Award is awarded for meritorious service to the wider community more than is expected for the qualification or appointment held.

I feel that the skills I have gained through work experience and recent study will make me a strong asset to the school board. My ability to work successfully as part of a team is demonstrated by success within the healthcare profession and by recognised community involvement.

In my spare time, I enjoy travelling, the outdoors and a good book.

Road Safety

We have had reports that some members of the community, hopefully not our parents, that are ignoring safe driving around the school when children are coming to school and leaving in the afternoon. Of particular concern is speeding along Jackson Avenue on the northern side of the school. The children have been reminded about crossing roads and being vigilant. Please report any dangerous actions by drivers to the appropriate authorities.

Statement of Accounts

Many thanks to those who have already paid their accounts in full —it is much appreciated. A Statement of Accounts will have been sent home this week (Week 4) for items which may still be outstanding.. Please note that although the account may state that current items are ‘outstanding’, unfortunately this is an automatically-generated document produced through Department of Education financial software and we are unable to change it. We’re hoping that this will be amended in future software updates.

Please note: Swimming lessons for PP-Year 6 will be taking place next term, usually costing around $65 per student. Term 4 can be quite a busy term excursion-wise – if you’d like to plan ahead and start making partial payments, please speak to our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton.

Families are welcome to make a ‘lump sum’ payment to clear their accounts and assist with planning for the Term or Year. The credit will remain on your child’s account and automatically be allocated to any charges that occur between now and the end of year.

Please let the office know if you would like to take up these options.

As our accounting system can only be set up for individual student accounts, you will need to stipulate which student the amount is to be credited against when you make the direct transfer by using their name as the reference. The accounting system is also unable to provide a printed running credit balance.

Payments can be made via direct deposit (BSB 016 350 Account No: 340871304 – child’s name as reference) or cash/cheque (please place money in envelope available from the class teacher) through your child’s class teacher.

Last week the school held its annual Speak Up finals, with every child from years 3 -6, writing and delivering their own speeches to their class. As each year passes, the children become more adept and skilled. Their ability to stand confidently before an audience and recite their speech has grown and we are all in awe of their skills and ability.

School Banking - Wed mornings 8:10am - 8:40am

I have been coordinating the school banking for around 5 years and have been thinking it is time to pass the role on. As I am now working with early starts, I am urgently looking for someone to take this role on, it is unfortunate that this has now become a bit of a priority.

The running of the mornings have been organised for the whole term as have the Yr 5 tellers.

It is not an arduous job and I have enjoyed getting to know so many students and parents.

We also need to recruit more parents to oversee the mornings on a rotation system. Again, this is not an arduous role.

Regrettably if we can't find a volunteer to coordinate the school banking, it might have to stop temporarily.

Please see Bec Gregory if you are interested, I won't dump and run! I am very happy to help you until the role is comfortable.

NETBALL NEWS

Newborough Primary School has 6 Netball teams currently competing in the Perth Netball Association's Competition. In Term 2, 3 of our coaches - Alyson, Bridgette and Renee had the opportunity to attend an open training session, hosted by the West Coast Fever.

Our coaches were invited to breakfast and then watched the training session. There was the opportunity to ask the players questions as well as receive information about their training regimes and the science behind them.

It was great opportunity , and a very interesting and informative experience.

Safety House

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT’S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is

http://www.safetyhousewa.org.au

If you wish to apply to become a Safety House in our area, please take a few moments to fill out the form below.
