Principal's Introduction

Thank You

It's great to be back after a refreshing break. For me a little longer than the two weeks. On the first Monday staff participated in a series of workshops run by Mr Stenhouse and Miss Tucknott focussing on how we provide high performance and care for every child in our school. We also did a workshop on Visual Arts and the West Australian Curriculum. This was run by Mrs Smith our energetic Music teacher who certainly has a wonderful knowledge and enthusiasm for all areas of the Arts curriculum.

During my absence Mr Stenhouse did a superb job as Acting Principal and Miss Tucknott and staff in support. Thank you to all staff, students and parents for your ongoing support. I have really enjoyed coming back seeing all the students, parents and staff. We have a brilliant school that we all work hard to keep in such good order.

I would like to welcome several new staff, practice teachers and relief staff to our school. With the Department's crackdown on accrued long service leave many staff are taking leave over the next two years. This we are managing to have least impact on student learning. Last term it was myself. This term Mrs Tennant, Ms Williams, Miss Phillips (first 5 weeks), Mrs Thornett, Mrs Murdoch and Miss Tucknott (last 5 weeks but will attend the WAGSM practice and concert) are on LSL. We welcome Ms Danni Beaton (Mrs Tennant), Mrs Coleen Dayman (Ms Williams), Ms Fran McDermott (Miss Phillips) and Ms Jill Duncan (Mrs Murdoch and Mrs Thornett). We also have several additions and changes to our Education Assistance team with Mrs Louise Carey, Mrs Elise Hinkley, Ms Hayley King and Ms Melanie Bursey joining us in various roles.

We are also fortunate to have three Internship (4th Year final practice) student teachers in our school. Best wishes to Miss Emily Driscoll (Yrs 3/ 4 Mrs Farmer/Mrs Wimmer), Miss Zoe Dinsdale (Yr 1 Mrs O'Dea) and Mrs Morwenna Stanley (Preprimary Mrs Anderson).

Exciting Term Ahead

The term calendar is full of exciting events from the first day to the last. We of course have all the regular activities like assemblies. This term includes cross country and athletics carnivals, Bookweek, WAGSM Music Concert, Safety House Incursion and Walk/Ride to school day (Both featuring roads safety), Speak Up public speaking, student disco and the Quiz Night. Plus of course much more.

School Board Parent Vacancy

Are you interested in contributing to the governance of Newborough Primary School as a parent/legal guardian(Parents from here in) representative on the School Board? One of our parent representative Board members has resigned due to work commitments creating a vacancy. Should there be more nominations than vacant positions all parents will be offered the opportunity to vote. Candidates will then be asked to provide a 250 word brief to include on the voting slip. Members of the Board may hold office for a term not exceeding three years. New members of the Board will be offered training and will have a mentor allocated to assist with induction onto the Board. If you are interested email or supply in writing your expression of interest (Not your 250 word brief at this stage) to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au by 3:00pm, Thurs. 4th August 2016.

The Board meets twice per term as determined by members. Extra meetings may be agreed upon by members of the Board. Members are expected to attend all meetings and abide by the Board 'Code of Conduct'.

Noongar Season MAKURU

Makaru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year come into full swing. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

As the waterways and catchments started to fill, people were able to move about their country with ease and thus their food sources changed from sea, estuarine and lake foods to those of the lands in particular the grazing animals such as the kangaroo. As well as a food source, animals provided people with many other things. For example, 'Yongar' or kangaroos not only provided meat but also 'bookas' (animal skin cloaks that were used as the nights became much cooler). Nothing was left; even the bones and sinews were used in the manufacturing of bookas and for hunting tools such as spears.

Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. If you look carefully, you might now see pairs of 'Wardongs' (ravens) flying together. You also notice these pairs not making the usual 'ark ark arrrrrk' that these birds are well known for when flying solo. Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed.

Flowers that will start to emerge include the blues and purples of the Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta) and the Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis). As the season comes to a close, you should also start to notice the white flowers of the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) as the blues start to make way for the white and cream flowers of Djilba.

When you come along to our assemblies we will be playing a lovely song by local Noongar artist and singer Gina Williams called Welcome Song as everyone arrives We also do the Welcome to Country as part of our assemblies to remind us of our heritage and responsibilities.

Attendance

Last semester we reached an attendance rate of 93.4%, our goal is to reach 94% attendance rate. While we appreciate that children get sick and there are times that they are unable to attend school, we request that the school is informed of these incidences one one of the following methods:

Students who attend under 89% of the time are deemed at educational risk due. The school has a process to assist students/parents who are finding it difficult to get to school, please contact either Mr Stenhouse or our Chaplain, Ali Dee if you wish to discuss your child's attendance.

National Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability.

All schools in Australia, including Independent and Catholic schools, will participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability every year.

The Data Collection is an annual count of the number of students with disability receiving educational adjustments to support their participation in education on the same basis as students without disability.

All education agencies are now required under the Australian Education Regulation 2013, to provide information on a students' level of education, disability and level of adjustment to the Australian Government Department of Education. Data will continue to be de-identified prior to its transfer and no student's identity will be provided to the Australian Government Department of Education.

The collection of this information from states and territories will inform future policy and program planning in relation to students with disability.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Nick Stenhouse on 9446 1025 or the Western Australian Department of Education NCCD Helpline on 0477 741 598.

Fathering Project

Newborough Primary School Dad's Evening

Date/Time : 7:00pm-9:00pm Tuesday, 16th August 2016 at
Venue : Innaloo Sportsman's Club
RSVP : Friday, 12th August to John Worthy or Nick Stenhouse

Come along and socialise with the other Dads from Newborough Primary School. This will be an interactive, informative evening for all the fathers and father figures to meet, talk, share and support each other in trying to be the best dads they can be!

When someone asks, "What is the most important thing in your life?"
The answer 99% of the time is, "My family".

The benefits of effective fathers, or father figures, are profound and have a very important influence on a child's life. Mums generally do a great job as do some dads. However, some dads need to get more involved to be really effective so come along and get some great tips. Everyone "wins", dads, wives, partners, kids, school & the community.

"It's completely changed my life, my outlook. I'm happier in my life. I can't thank The Fathering Project enough. It has completely changed my life for the better and I will be forever grateful to The Fathering Project." Luke – electrician and father of 3 boys.

A reinvigorated focus on sustainability!

Ms Murray, Mr Blanch, Ms Balding, Mr Luxton, Ms Singleton and Mr Worthy have met over the last two terms to identify and implement environmentally sustainable practices at Newborough. Inexpensive solutions easily managed by students and staff have resulted in immediate objectives being achieved.

The enterprise began with a waste audit in Term One. Patrick from the Waste Wise Schools Program provided audit equipment to facilitate Year 4 Room 7 students to sort all the waste collected in the school in one day. The audit was conducted twice, on a canteen and a non-canteen day. All bins were emptied onto a tarpaulin after lunch and the waste sorted. At the end of each day, NPS cleaners Steve and Robin gave all the 'in-class' waste to Mr Luxton to sort (with the help of the dedicated Anna Yates).

It was determined that NPS produces about 60 grams of waste per student on a non-canteen day, and about 70 grams per student on a canteen day. A pie chart of the audit results by weight is attached for the non-canteen day. Weight does not equate to volume of course (consider the weight and volume of an empty aluminium can). Studying the four large segments on the right of the pie chart is instructive (food scraps versus untouched food).

Reducing the volume of paper products and organic matter going into the waste stream was always going to be an obvious recycling target and was the focus during Semester One 2016.

White paper for recycling is now being collected from each classroom and emptied into the existing 'blue' bin in administration. Ben and Luca want YOU to reduce, reuse and recycle!

For convenience, the Early Childhood Centre now has their own 'blue' bin. Ms Rocca and Ms Carey are looking forward to also being able to recycle coloured paper and cardboard!

At recess and lunch, all NPS students now separate organic waste matter into purpose bought bins placed alongside general waste bins. Seven organic waste bins are collected mid-lunchtime by Year 6 students and dumped into the compost tumblers in the community garden. Fyn, Tao, Brandon, Oscar and Zainu want YOU to separate your organic waste for use in the community garden!

Recyclable materials from the staff room are now being collected weekly and disposed of via a teacher's home recycling bin.

Year 4 Room 7 show off the 21 clip lock bags collected in one waste audit. That equates to 100 bags a week, 1000 bags a term, 4000 bags a year going to landfill. By washing and reusing the bags a few times more, NPS families would save money, conserve natural resources, and reduce the waste going into the costly big green skip behind the students.

Our Semester Two foci include encouraging the reuse of plastic clip lock bags, and for students to take uneaten food home (whole fruit, uneaten sandwiches, unopened packets of processed foods). As Caine Rice said recently, "Unfinished lunches make an excellent after-school snack!" The cost-effective recycling of coloured paper and cardboard will now be addressed, as will the potential to 'collect' reusable materials for science and art projects.

Waste Wise funds are being spent on resurrecting the worm farm so that organic waste is broken down faster, restoring the structure of the community garden beds, installing reticulation, renewing the shade cloth for the greenhouse, and purchasing potting benches, seed raising trays and mix, pots and potting mix (an interim measure until we 'make' our own soil).

But wait, there's more! Room 8 has taken responsibility for battery recycling in the immediate term. Extending this service to recycling student family's mobile phones, ink cartridges and other consumables in being investigated. The energy generated by the school's solar panels will also be researched with a view to including the data in cross-curricular activities involving mathematics.

To facilitate the school community giving further life to furniture, toys and clothing, consideration is being given to hosting (in conjunction with other local schools) a biannual community 'Reuse Fair' OR a Salvation Army Clothing & Household Goods Drive. Extending NPS Sustainability Committee membership to include P&C and family representatives is clearly an important next step as is inviting cooperation with like-minded schools.

It won't all happen at once, but watch this space. If you have skills or knowledge you believe would be valuable to the NPS Sustainability Committee, please email john.worthy@education.wa.edu.au.

Safety House

INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

IT'S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Safety House is a community based "Good Neighbour" program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It's easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.

The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.

You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.

This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.

Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.

We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is

http://www.safetyhousewa.org.au/

If you wish to apply to become a Safety House in our area, please take a few moments to fill out the form below.
