Schoolzine App

In the last newsletter, we advised you that we will be trialling the use of an app as an additional means of communication to parents. The app will be used for non-urgent communications. It is called Schoolzine and can be downloaded from either the Apple App store or the Google Play store for Android users.

Principal’s Introduction

As part of our school development day in Week 6 we dedicated part of the day to discuss the Department of Education’s Strategic Plan of High Performance/High Care and how this is reflected in our school. We continually aspire to meet and exceed the expectations for students to succeed outlined in the plan. Reflecting on the High Performance aspect, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Whittle Sensai on winning the Sangora Education Foundation Language Teachers Award for 2016. Whittle Sensai will be conducting further research into the teaching of Japanese. We are very fortunate to have someone so dedicated to the Languages learning area, with such a broad knowledge of the curriculum and Japanese culture.

Parking around school

Please be aware and take care when parking around school. There have been incidences of damage occur to residential property surrounding the school due to driver error. Whilst the damage is generally minimal it could be a lot worse if a student were injured. There is an expectation that our school community will take care when driving around the school, please be safety conscious and drive with care.

Nature Play Area

Thank you to the P&C and all the volunteers for their amazing effort last weekend at the Nature Play busy bee. It was tremendous to see all the parents involved in the day, it really reinforces what a fantastic group of parents we have at our school. Due to all the work done, there was a significant amount of progress made, with the limestone blocks being laid, trees planted, lots of mulch spread and a seat being installed around of the trees. We are really looking forward to seeing the Nature Play area continue to blossom!

Reporting to Parents

Reporting to Parents – Semester One Reports

The Semester One reports are being sent home with students in Week 10.

The information contained in the reports provides a summary of your child’s achievement, attitude, behaviour, effort and progress in personal and social learning for mid-way through the year. Students are assessed on the content and skills taught to the date of the reports being written and not on the whole year’s Achievement Standards. Summative reports are provided twice a year at the end of each school semester. This report is one of a number of strategies used by Newborough Primary School to communicate with you about your child’s progress.

Pre-primary to Year 2 students are graded on a five point scale from Excellent to Very Low. Year 3 to 6 students are also graded on a five point scale from A to E.

Achievement Descriptors

A Excellent The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level.

B High The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level.

C Satisfactory The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.

D Limited The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level.

E Very Low The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level.

Learning Area Effort

Your child’s demonstration of effort within each Learning Area is reported using the scale: Consistently, Often, Sometimes and Seldom.

Personal and Social Learning

A description of your child’s progress in personal and social learning using the scale: Consistently, Often, Sometimes, Seldom and Not Assessed.

Overall Attitude, Behaviour and Effort

The attitude, behaviour and effort demonstrated by your child is shown using the following scale: Consistently, Often, Sometimes, Seldom and Not Assessed.

Comments

Comments provide information about your child’s progress and areas for improvement. This semester, comments have also been provided as to what has been taught in each of the specialist classes your child attends. Please take the opportunity to follow up with any of your child’s teachers if you have any queries about their grades or comments.

The voluntary contributions are utilised to directly support your child’s learning program, as stipulated in the Voluntary Contributions brochure.

Please see our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, if you would like to enter a payment plan.

Note: The automatically-generated reminder is called ‘Reminder of Unpaid Billing Items’. The payment deadline for some of the items listed may only be due for payment later this term. Humphrey’s Dance Program

The Humphrey’s Dance program has been receiving great reviews from all students and Todd, our fantastic dance instructor has complimented our students many times on their behaviour and enthusiasm during the sessions.

To celebrate the dance program, we will be holding a free social dance on Wednesday 29th June after school in the undercover area. There will be two sessions.

Kindergarten to Year 2 students 3.15-4.15pm

All Kindergarten to Year 2 students who have paid to attend the lessons are invited to the social dance straight after school. Students will need a labelled water bottle and must be accompanied by a parent. Parents will also need to be responsible for the supervision of any non-school aged students on school grounds during this time and will be asked to leave promptly at 4.15pm so that we can start the next social dance on time with the older students at 4.30 pm. If you cannot attend the dance with your child, please organise for another parent to supervise your child and be responsible for taking them home. Students do not need to change clothes for the dance.

Year 3 – Year 6 students 4.30-5.30pm

The Social dance for Year 3 to Year 6 students will be held from 4.30-5.30pm on the same day. As students should not be on school grounds until their dance time we request that all Year 3-6 students go home prior to the dance and return to school for 4.30pm, if a parent is not on schools grounds already to supervise them.

Parents must ensure the safety of their child returning for the dance and being collected to go home at 5.30pm please. Students may wear free dress and bring a labelled water bottle.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries in regards to the Humphrey’s Social Dance.

Newborough Cares

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to provide some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate non- perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers when needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs.

Some suggestions of what to bring : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal…

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food to Room 5 before school during week 8 (13th -17th June), any day that week.

Thanks,
The Pastoral Care Committee

Duyfken, Shipwreck Galleries and Roundhouse Excursion – Rooms 6,7,8

Almost 80 students from three classes visited Fremantle accompanied by four teachers, Mr Marshall, and 16 or so parents. The feedback from the excursion has been excellent – the students were interested and excited. Words like "stupendous, awesome, best ever" littered their recounts. The ultimate goal of the excursion was to give context to students' classwork - to add pieces to their ‘puzzle of history'.

Over the coming years, students will build upon and revisit this historical framework as they continue to question why things are the way they are today. A strength of the Australian Curriculum History is its integrated structure which facilitates students making connections to prior learning and to other subjects.

Students are gaining an understanding of what trade, commerce and monopoly mean, and the role superior technology played and still plays in gaining commercial advantage. They have also gained some insights into the brutality of the past, ‘man’s inhumanity to man’ – that the purpose of punishment was not to rehabilitate the individual, but to make them an example to deter the misbehaviour of others.

Matches to be played will be in Soccer and Netball ‘B’. Unfortunately, Scarborough does not have a Football or Netball ‘A’ team this year.

All family and friends are very welcome to come along and provide support not only for their children, but also for the teachers and umpires who are providing a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their physical and interpersonal skills.

LIGHTNING CARNIVAL

The Year 5 / 6 students who have been participating in the winter sport program will participate in a one day Lightning Carnival format on Friday 24 June.

A parent excursion/consent form has been sent home for the children who will be participating.

If you would like your child from Year 3 – 6 to participate, please complete the “Running Club” form and return the form to me.

Parents are more than welcome to come and assist / run with the group. We meet outside at the Library at 8.00am on Monday morning for a 20 minute running session.

P&C News

Nature Play Busy Bee

A huge THANK YOU to all the Newborough families who came along and helped out at our Second Nature Play Busy Bee that was held on Saturday 11th June. A few hours of work by over 40 parents and just as many kids, has seen major progress in our Nature Play Area.

The aim of the afternoon was to continue work on 6 main areas in Stage 1 of the Nature Play, and build on the great work that was achieved at our first Busy Bee in Term 1.

These tasks included;

Sheet mulching a large area of open space in the General Play Area.

Planting natives along the limestone wall.

Digging out the ‘river’ which will become the dry creek bed.

Completing the Limestone Wall.

Placing larger logs along the borders of the native garden and mulched areas.

Building a seat structure around the tree base in the General Play Area.

With such a huge turnout of helpers, we have been able to tick off a large portion of the above tasks. The afternoon was a buzz of activity, everyone grabbed tools and put in a solid afternoon’s work. Whether it was shovelling, mulching, planting, moving logs or building a wall or seat, it seemed that no one was left out – if the kids weren’t pushing the wheelbarrows they were certainly catching a ride in one!

Apart from all the work that was achieved, it was an afternoon that allowed families to meet, children to play but it also gave people the opportunity to ask questions and understand what the Nature Play Area will become.

Work on the Nature Play will continue most Friday afternoons, so please stop by and have a look or give an hour of your time. There will be another afternoon of ‘busy work’ in Term 3, for those that are able to make it. Details to follow closer to the time.

Please direct any questions about the Nature Play to Jolene: jolene@terraperma.com.au

Thank You again to all our helpers, you are what make Newborough Primary School such a great community.

Election Day Fundraiser - Saturday 2nd July

The volunteers spreadsheet for the election day fundraiser is starting to fill, however we still have shifts available.

Start thinking now about what you can bake to be sold on the day, or perhaps which family member you can allocate this job to? Access to the volunteers spreadsheet can be found here, and cake donations will be called for closer to the day. You can volunteer and vote at the same time - two birds, one stone :-) Positions are filling, however we desperately need help on setup early in the morning - there could be rewards for those who arrive early…

Thanks
