A reminder to parents this Friday, 3rd June, is a School Development Day. Children will not be required to attend on this day. In addition to this we have a long weekend this weekend, celebrating WA Day. We hope you have a fantastic and safe weekend and we look forward to seeing all the students back, ready to go on Tuesday.

A big thank you! To the P&C members who volunteered, to run the ‘Walk to School Day’ on Friday last week. Also to the parents and students that participated by walking to school.

Kings Park Excursion – Year 2

The sun was shining and the birds were chirping for the Kings Park excursion for the Year 2 classes. We watched a performance of “Chunyart and the Cheeky Parrot” detailing how Noongar people used the bushland area of Kings Park to survive. Children and adults alike experienced everything the Naturescape playground had to offer, even splashing through the stream! From observing to climbing it was an engaging experience. Finishing off the day we learnt about trees and plants of the area and their uses on the Boodja Gnarning walk. The day was most memorable and made possible by our wonderful parents who supervised children, shared their knowledge and even made snacks!

Japanese News

This term all classes have been encouraged to notice new realia in the classroom and have a go whenever possible to use learnt language.

All students were encouraged to find out about the Golden Week of holidays in Japan during the first week of May and the Year 4 students were involved in a Japanese Children’s Day excursion to the Hyogo Prefectural Cultural Centre in City Beach. The programme saw students introduced to the background of Children’s day. Students viewed the miniature samurai armour, displayed in the Japanese tatami room and the large, colourful carp kites, koinobori, up close. Students made their own kite with the amazing expertise of local kite expert, Michael Alvares of Kite Kinetics. This was a fabulous opportunity for students to see how language and culture are closely connected in an authentic context. The day enabled students to fly their kite and explore the elements of a significant cultural artefact and the holiday celebration in Japan.

Newborough Cares

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to provide some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate

non- perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers when needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs.

Some suggestions of what to bring : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal…

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food to Room 5 before school during week 8 (13th -17th June), any day that week.

Thanks,
The Pastoral Care Committee

If you have any questions please see Ali Dee ( Tuesday & Thursday) or Nat Kos

Walk Safely to School Day

NATIONAL WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY

Thank you to all the children and parents who participated in the Newborough Primary School Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 27th May.

Although a chilly start to the day, plenty of families walked to school and enjoyed some fresh fruit which was very generously donated by:

SUN FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLES
251/259 Scarborough Beach Road, Doubleview.

Walk Safely to School Day is an annual, national event when all Primary School aged children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school.

The objectives of this day are to:

  • Encourage parents/carers to walk to school with primary school age children
  • Promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits
  • Help children develop vital road crossing skills
  • Help ensure children up to the age of 10 years hold an adult's hand when crossing the road
  • Reduce car dependency and traffic congestion
  • Reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles
  • Promote the use of public transport

We look forward to seeing you all again in Term 3!

Nature Play

NATURE PLAY BUSY BEE

JUNE 11TH from 1-4pm
COME ALONG AND HELP BUILD OUR NATURE PLAY.
THIS GATHERING WILL FOCUS ON MULCH MOVING, PLACING 'HEAVY' BOARDERS, MORE NATIVE PLANTING AND MAYBE... EVEN DIGGING THE RIVER!
SO BRING SHOVELS, GLOVES AND
YOUR BEST CHAIN GANG SONGS.

Thanks so much to all those who have answered the call for large cardboard boxes destined for the bin. We're using them to sheet mulch (large sheets of cardboard laid down under a thick layer of mulch). This limits the grass growing up through the mulch and into our native garden area.

If you have any large cardboard boxes or queries, please let Jolene know - jolene@terraperma.com.au .

School Banking: IMPORTANT NEWS - CHANGE OF DAY

Hello bankers,

Starting Wednesday 8 June school banking will move from a Thursday morning to a Wednesday morning.

Within school banking at Newborough, the role of student tellers has traditionally been an opportunity for Yr5 children.

However many have choir commitments Thursday morning meaning they miss this chance to contribute to school banking. We have garnered quite a lot of interest from Yr 5 students and so have made the decision to change the day.

The last day for school banking on a Thursday will be 2 June, with the following week commencing on Wednesday 8 June.

Banking will still operate in the library from 8:15-8:40am.

Thank you an happy banking!
