Principal’s Introduction

Last week the Years 3 and 5 students completed the NAPLAN testing for this year. Congratulations to all the students who participated, we are all very proud of the effort that they put into completing the tests. Like anything at school, all we ask is for students to put in their best effort and from all reports it was clear that they all did. The teachers did a great job of administering the tests. Results from the tests are not available until later in the year, usually around September. We will be able to give you an idea of how the students went when the results arrive.

We now begin gearing up for the 2016 School Musical, The Pinnafore Pirates. Auditions begin this week and the excitement is rising. There has already been a lot going on behind the scenes with Mrs Holmes organising costumes, props and people. If you are interested in helping out with the musical, please see Mrs Holmes.

Parent Communication

In an effort to improve our communication with parents and the wider community, we are trialling an app called Schoolzine. This is created by the company that creates our newsletter. The app will be used for non-urgent communication - this includes any minor changes to the school day and information that affects a particular class or group ie Choir. It can be downloaded for free from the ITunes store for Apple devices or Google Play stores for Android users. It would be appreciated if you downloaded the app so we can assess its suitability for our needs. During the trial, we will continue to use our existing SMS system as well, so parents won’t miss out on pertinent information.

We also often include some information on Twitter, so be sure to follow us; @Newboroughsc!

Nature Play Area

If you have the opportunity to have a look at the Nature Play area, there has been some fantastic work occurring on Friday afternoons. Phase 1 of the project has begun and you will notice a lot of timber ready to be used and also that mulch has begun to be spread and some native trees have been planted along the access road. Further in the newsletter there is a plan of the Nature Play area for you to look at. If you haven’t already, make sure you have a look at the Nature Play newsletter as it provides a lot of information pertaining to the development of the area. We are very excited about this area and are looking forward to seeing it develop as each phase of implementation is completed. Many hands make light work, so if you are able to make the busy bee on the 11th June, your assistance would be appreciated.

Be Proud of your School

Our school is a fantastic school, we have a great relationship with our community; however, there are times that we have issues relating to visitors on our premises. We are proud of our school and know that our school community are too; so we ask that if you see someone on our premises that is doing something inappropriate, please call Education Security on 9264 7771 and let them know. Please don’t confront the people but do report it so we can minimise the impact that unwanted visitors have on our school. There are signs located throughout the school with Education Securities’ number should you need it. This week we arrived at school on Monday to find sand through the Pre Primary drink fountain and thrown against the windows and doors.

Stranger Danger

There have been incidences recently that are a reminder of the importance of stranger danger. While we haven’t had an incident at school, I would like to take the opportunity to remind you of ways to help your child be safe. Should there be an incident of concern that we were required to report on, please be assured that we would ensure you are promptly informed.

Here are some suggestions to help your children stay safe:

  • always travel in a group
  • walk on the right hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic
  • wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway
  • stay in areas that are well lit
  • stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres)
  • be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably
  • if you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number
  • if a passing car stops nearby, never get too close
  • run from a situation if you feel at risk
  • give this advice to your brothers and sisters, especially if they are younger
  • report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school and the police
  • if you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car
  • report number plates of cars and the clothing or distinguishing features of individuals to police.

You can call 13 14 44 to report an incident to WA Police (only use 000 in an emergency) or 1800 333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers.

To get the latest community safety information from police, visit WA Police on Facebook www.facebook.com/WA.Police or online at www.police.wa.gov.au.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me at school.

Fathering Project

Last year we began looking for Dads who were interested in participating in the Fathering Project Schools Program. We had a group of fathers who were interested in establishing a group to support fathers engage with their children. There are 3 levels of activities undertaken by the schools’ fathering groups, these include: Father and Father activities, Father and child activities and Father and Fathering Project activities. If you are interested in finding out more please come and see me or send me an email at Nick.Stenhouse@education.wa.edu.au

Humphrey’s Dance Program

Humphreys Dance starts this week! The main emphasis in this program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture.

Payment was due by Friday 6th May 2016. Please see Kate and Sharon in the Front Office urgently in regards to payment if you have not paid. The cost is $60 per child with a maximum of $60 per family.

KidsSafe Report on Playground Equipment and Sand Pits

We recently had a Kidsafe Playground audit conducted on all play equipment in the school as part of the National Quality Standards. The report received on our playgrounds was overall positive with only a few minor works needed to be done on the equipment to ensure the safety of our students. Two of the major recommendations have been:

  • Replacing the slide in the junior primary playground near the oval; and
  • Topping up the sand in the junior and senior playgrounds.

The slide has now been replaced and thanks to our amazing parents, the two playgrounds will have sand replaced in them on Friday 20th May. We thank the P and C for helping organise at quick notice parents to get up for an early morning 6.30am start to fill up the pits.

As such, can we please issue another reminder to keep all dogs and rubbish out of our playgrounds. Thank you.

Home Reading Pre-Primary– Year 2

As parents of our Pre-Primary to Year 2 students would be aware, Newborough Primary School has a Home Reading Log to record student’s nights of reading rewarding them with certificates for each 50 nights that they have read. The certificates are:

50 nights – Bronze Certificate
100 nights – Silver Certificate
150 nights – Gold Certificate
200 nights – Sapphire Certificate

Below are some of our fantastic readers so far this year.

(Left to Right) Bronze Certificate Readers: Reed Ndreca,
Titan Szczepanski and Isobel Toovey (Year 1)

If your child reads more than one book on any given night, please record these on the same line and not on a new night.

Book Week 2016 – Australia: Story Country

Okay! So Book Week 2016 isn’t until 20-26th August. (Week 5, Term 3) However, the topic of Australia: Story Country links beautifully with the Cross Curriculum Priorities of the Australian Curriculum and provides our students and teachers with an opportunity to explore the history of Australia; the histories and cultures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders; Asia and Australia’s history with Asia and multicultural Australia.

One of the activities we are considering for Book Week is each class cooking damper on an open pit fire. However, we will need many parents who would be happy to volunteer to help build the fire and cook the damper during the day. If you are happy to help with this activity in August, could you please contact me in the office or via email as this one may take some organising!

School Diary 2017 – Cover Photos

The organisation for the next year’s School Diary always begins in Term 3. This year we would like to ask parents to submit any photos of either students or the school that you have taken throughout the year to be submitted for consideration for the front and back cover. Students must be wearing their school uniform in any photos submitted and be wearing a school hat if the photos have been taken outside such as in the playground or on an excursion. We will check the photo permission of students if the photos are considered. We will ask for any photos next term. So, keep any great photos that you think would represent our school well for the diary.

Kind regards,

Karen Tucknott
Deputy Principal
