Principal's Introduction
Welcome Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone had a safe, relaxing break and are ready for an exciting Term 2. At the end of last term, we held our ANZAC service. It was wonderful to hear Captain Andrew Jackson from the 16th Battalion speak to the students about his experiences and what ANZAC day meant to him. I have to commend the students for their positive behaviour during this solemn commemorative service. The choir performed a variety of songs and it was lovely to hear their first performance for the year. Congratulations and well done to Mrs Smith for her work with the choir and of course to Ms Tucknott for the organisation of the ANZAC ceremony.
As mentioned we have an exciting and busy term ahead. This week the students will be able to nominate for lunchtime clubs, which was very successful in Term 1. If you look up in the trees near the gardener's shed you will see the bird boxes made by the woodwork club. This term we have Calligraphy, Chess, Gardening, Music Jam and Boot Camp! We also have Winter Lightning Carnival for the upper primary students to look forward. The Kindy and Pre-primary classes are holding their Mother's Day Pampering sessions this week, which should be a fantastic experience. We wish all our wonderful Newborough Mum's a very happy Mother's Day!
In this edition of the newsletter, you will notice a video done by the student leaders. The leaders are conducting Round Table meetings with each year group throughout the year to determine aspects of school life that are important to each year level group. They will also be finding out what a 'Newborough role model' looks like to the students and tackling issues that arise in school. We also have our wonderful Year 5 Peer Mediators out and about in the playground at lunchtimes this term. The students are quite visible in their bright orange vests. Their role is to assist any students having issues in the playground. They will be supported by our chaplain, Ms Ali Dee and of course will have a duty teacher to refer to, should they need assistance.
Cheers

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy)
The annual NAPLAN tests are scheduled for the mornings of Tuesday 10 May, Wednesday 11 May and Thursday 12 May 2016. All schools across Australia must complete the tests on the same days. We ask that all Year 3 and 5 students are on time to school on those days please. Please ensure your child has had a very good sleep and a nutritious breakfast to help them perform their very best.
The content of each test is informed by the Australian Curriculum (English and Mathematics).
Language Conventions: students identify and correct spelling errors and answer questions on aspects of grammar and punctuation.
Writing: Students write a text in response to a given stimulus. They are assessed on the quality and organisation of ideas, structuring of sentences and use of correct spelling and punctuation.
Reading: students read a number of short texts and answer questions to show understanding of the texts.
Numeracy: students solve problems across Number and Algebra; Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
Tuesday 10th May 2016
Year 3 and Year 5
Language Conventions (40 minutes)
Writing (40 minutes)
Wednesday 11th May 2016
Year 3 and Year 5
Reading (45 minutes)
Thursday 12th May 2016
Year 3 Numeracy (45 minutes)
Year 5 Numeracy (50 minutes)
The NAPLAN tests are designed to complement the regular assessments made by teachers throughout the year. NAPLAN tests are conducted at schools and administered by classroom teachers, school deputies or the principal. As there are many split classes, it may be possible that your child's teacher may be administered by another member of staff. This is normal practice across all school.
Your child's NAPLAN report will be issued through your school in mid-August. The report will be accompanied by an information brochure. All students' individual results are strictly confidential.
The test results provide a snapshot of a student's achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. They assist teachers to better identify students who require additional support or enrichment. Students and parents can use individual results to discuss achievement with teachers. The tests allow the progress of each student to be monitored over time. The results support schools to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs. State and territory departments of education gain information to help them evaluate programs and allocate resources.
Please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher or myself for any further information.
Humphrey's Dance Program
Humphreys Dance is almost here! The program will start in Week 4 of this term on Tuesday 17th May 2016. The main emphasis in this program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture.
Notes have gone home already. We require payment please for your child to be able to participate. Payment is due by Friday 6th May 2016. The last day for EFT is Wednesday 4th May. The cost is $30 per child with a maximum of $60 per family.
There will be a social dance for K-2 and 3-7 on Wednesday 29th June. More information will be provided on this at a later date.
Please do not hesitate to contact Sharon Singleton in regards to payment plans or myself for any other queries.

IT UPDATE
A big thank you to the P&C for donating the funds towards purchasing the laptop trolleys. The laptops have now been set up and are in use in the classrooms. We have begun our Interactive Whiteboard replacement a little early as we had some whiteboards that were starting to have some issues. We had two new boards installed over the holidays and will have another installed in the near future.

Science News
STEM
In 2012, Australia's Chief Scientist, Professor Ian Chubb, released a worrying report. It revealed that the number of students studying "enabling sciences" at university such as chemistry, mathematics and physics had flat lined. These sciences are considered the drivers of innovation and critical to our ability to compete in a knowledge economy.
Since then a lot of research has been done about how to improve science uptake. For most people, primary school is the place where early interest in science begins or ends. A student who doesn't engage with science learning early on is unlikely to continue the subject in high school and in to university.
Nobel Prize Winner, Brian Schmidt form the Australian National University believes involving kids in hands on experiments and inquiry techniques early can make the difference. Science (STEM) has to be fun and exciting for kids. I wholeheartedly agree. I have two science degrees behind me I know that an inspiring, quality science education at primary level will give a student the tools and desire to continue their science journey.
Science, Technology, Engineering & Technology (STEM) teaches kids to question, hypothesise and problem solve. It involves a lot of talking and listening to others....and patience: often in science/STEM things don't happen overnight. These real life skills of inquiry and perseverance improve children's learning now, and into the future.
I am a strong supporter of the hands-on approach that science brings to learning. I believe in the Confucius statement: I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.
I have been a teacher for 17 years and have two science degrees, a diploma of education and a Masters of education. I have experience in science show construction and presentation, I have taught internationally and at independent and public schools throughout Australia. I have had extensive training and practice in inquiry based learning and possess a passion for teaching science/STEM. I am excited about developing scientific/STEM skills and knowledge across all year levels at Newborough Primary School.
How can you help?
Most importantly, talk to your child about what they are exploring in Science/STEM and how it applies to the their world.
If you work in any science/STEM related area and would like to share your experiences with the children or can help arranging an incursion/excursion please contact Miss Adams via email:
Cassandra.Adams2@education.wa.edu.au
Finally, we require lots of materials to explore and investigate with. If you are able to donate any of the following items to be used by students it would be appreciated.
- old cards (from all occasions)
- milk cartons/bottles
- empty cans/ soda bottles + lids
- yogurt/plastic/take away/ice cream containers
- cereal/shoe/ tissue/ interesting boxes
- polystyrene containers
- any old tools/nails/interesting building materials (small)
- old hairdryers/curling wands/clock radios (small electrical devices)
- If there are any old items that you think are worth investigating please email Miss Adams
Could all items be please be clean and placed in the box inside the science room on a Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Pottery News
My first pottery class for the year has been completed with the recent return of the children's small pots and tee lights. What a lovely job they did, as you can see from the photos, and done so enthusiastically.
My next two groups have been notified and will start in week 3 of this term. Thank you to those of you still waiting. You will be catered for in term 3.

Students thoughts about Pottery Classes
This term I have really enjoyed pottery because we get to use our hands and imagination. Two things I love to do.
Matilda yr5
I love pottery! Pottery is awesome and it helps you with your finger muscles.
Josie yr3
I love doing pottery and making the different things like animals and pots. I also like glazing all the things we made.
Zara yr3
This term in pottery we have been making bears to hang on our door handles. Another thing we have made is little animals. Personally, my favourite is my bear. Mine isn't so good but I still like it!
Riley yr4
I had the best time doing pottery because I liked painting the glaze and making stuff with clay.
Leo Spiby yr2
When we make it in our hands, it feels so squishy. Pottery is amazing!

Year 2 – Room 11
The students in Year 2 from rooms 10 and 11 have been participating in a social awareness program focussing on kindness. To begin the project they produced videos of other students whom they do not normally play with or students for whom they do not know much about. The videos can be seen in our foyer display through the use of QR codes.
QR codes readers are free to download and can be used on any mobile device with WIFI. We are encouraging parents and students to look at our interactive display and provide comments.
We are now seeking your input into our kindness program by providing a graffiti board in the administration reception for parents, teachers and other students to post 'acts of kindness'. If you spot an 'act of kindness' in the school we would strongly encourage you to post your comment. Students will also be producing videos containing 'acts of kindness', that they recognise around the school. If you like the idea but can't make it in to school to post your observation; email: nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au and we will happily post it for you.
Thanks in advance for your support and participation, Kelly Hughes and Nadine Murray.
