Principal’s Introduction

Moort Boodja

I can’t wait till this Saturday for Moort Boodja. This is such a fun and unique event at Newborough that challenges students and is extremely good fun as well. I am sure there are a lot of parents who get just as much out of the day as the kids. The P&C do a wonderful job coordinating all the activities and events. The staff have once again been fantastic giving of their time to be there to set up and support. I hope to see you there.

Amazing Students and Staff

Over the last few weeks I have had the privilege of visiting all classrooms, including Japanese, Science, Phys. Ed and Music to specifically look at teaching and learning. Whilst many of these visits are incidental the deputies and I are undertaking a series of what we call “Walk Through” visits where we enter a classroom and observe certain aspects classroom activity. These are unannounced and may happen at any time of day. The theme we have been focussing on is ‘Student engagement in learning’ Are they listening to and following instructions? This is of course most fundamental in children’s learning and class cohesiveness.

I must say that the level of student engagement and the quality of teaching has been exceptional. Over the last few years teachers have been trained in explicit teaching methodology that provides a consistent framework for students learning and teachers teaching. Whilst each teacher is different and groups of students vary, common approaches provide great consistency for learning. This is really evident across the school. I have seen some excellent lessons and quality learning from students.

After School Play

We do have quite a few students who remain with parents after school to have a play and for parents to have a catch up and chat with friends. This is terrific and part of the strong community we have at Newborough PS. Many schools do not allow or encourage before and after school play.

Parents are reminded that they are responsible for the supervision of their children after school and that our normal school rules apply at any time of the day. Supervision by the Admin Team applies from 8:15am in the main quadrangle and playground in front of the Music/Science rooms.

We have recently had a great deal of damage to drink fountains filled with sand and toilets left in a mess from unsupervised students after school. This has caused a great deal of distress for our cleaning and gardening staff who do a great job preparing the school each day.

To assist with parent supervised play I have asked the cleaners to leave the junior toilets near the library open till around 4:00pm when they are cleaned and then locked. The other toilets, including Kindergarten and Pre-primary and senior student toilets are locked once they have been cleaned shortly after the conclusion of the school day.

Children who are not with their own parents must go straight home so their parents know where they are and can provide supervision.

Statement of Accounts

Many thanks to those who have already paid their accounts in full —it is much appreciated. A Statement of Accounts have been sent home this week (Week 6) for items which may still be outstanding. Please note that although the account may state that current items are ‘outstanding’, unfortunately this is an automatically-generated document produced through Department of Education financial software and we are unable to change it. We’re hoping that this will be amended in future software updates.

  • Families are welcome to make a ‘lump sum’ payment to clear their accounts and assist with planning for the Term or Year. The credit will remain on your child’s account and automatically be allocated to any charges that occur between now and the end of year.
  • Families who would like to establish a payment plan are very welcome to contact our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, on 9446 1025.

Please let the office know if you would like to take up these options. Please note that as our accounting system can only be set up for individual student accounts, you will need to stipulate which student the amount is to be credited against when you make the direct transfer by using their name as the reference. The accounting system is also unable to provide a printed running credit balance.

Please let the office know if you would like to take up these options. Payments can be made via direct deposit (BSB 016 350 Account No: 340871304 – child’s name as reference) or cash/cheque (please place money in envelope available from the class teacher) through your child’s class teacher.

Student Update Forms

Student update forms were given to each student to take home, please check your child/ren’s school bag. We ask that parents carefully check all details on the form are correct and make any amendments required to ensure we have the correct information on our student database. Please return the form to the school teacher by 11 March 2016. If any of your details change during the year, please ensure the front office is informed so we can update the school records.

Voluntary Contributions and Charges

The Voluntary Contributions and Charges information is attached to this newsletter and can also be found on our website. Thank you to those parents whom have paid these via the booklist (if purchased through the P&C) or to the school direct. If you haven’t yet paid, please consider doing so as soon as possible – these funds are utilised to enhance your child’s learning experience across a number of curriculum areas, including reading, mathematics, art and technology.

Payment can be made via direct deposit directly into the school’s bank account at any time, or through your class teacher (in a clearly marked envelope):

BSB 016350 Account No: 340871304 (use your child’s name as the reference)

Statements will be sent home shortly - please contact our Manager Corporate Services, Sharon Singleton, if you would like to establish a payment plan, on 9446 1025. Families are also welcome to make partial payments in advance.

All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. This year all students will be judged against the Achievement Standards from the Australian Curriculum.

If you have concerns about your child participating in this year’s NAPLAN assessments, please see your teacher to discuss this immediately. Any parent wishing to withdraw their child from the assessments must complete a form which can be collected from the administration team. All withdrawals or exceptions must be nominated by 8th April 2016.

Term 2 Dance Program: Humphreys Dance

Humphreys Dance will form this year’s dance program at Newborough Primary School. Lessons will start in Week 4 of Term 2. The main emphasis in this program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture. A note in regards to the program and costing will be sent home before the end of the Term 1.

IT Update

There has been a lot going on at school this term regarding IT. We now have a minimum of six iPads in every classroom, which the teachers are utilising for small group work and to deliver very engaging lessons. Mrs Tennant’s Year Ones had a great English lesson using the iPads to predict the storyline in a picture book. The use of a Tech buddy ensured all students were able to utilise the technology to participate.

The staff participated in a professional learning session based on the Education Department’s online learning environment, Connect. Many parents will be starting their journey with Connect as Teachers adopt the technology as a one-stop-shop communication tool for parents. Parents are able to view notices, newsletters, photos and student work by accessing Connect. We also have a small number of parents who are trialling the use of the Connect Now app for mobile devices. Depending on the success of the trial, this will be made available for parents of participating classes later in the year.

At the end of last year the school purchased a bank of laptops, which have recently arrived. Very soon these will be available for classrooms to borrow on a rotational basis.

One of the exciting innovations this year is the introduction of the Bring Your Own Device trial for the Year 5 and 6 students. Currently we have approximately 68% of students bringing a device. After working through some initial connectivity issues, students are now able to utilise the device to participate in some very engaging lessons across a range of learning areas. It’s very exciting walking into a BYOD class, there is a real hum of activity and enthusiasm for learning.

http://vimeo.com/158284752

Very shortly parents of children in a BYOD class will receive a survey to help us gather some baseline information about the implementation of the BYOD trial.

Sports News

Faction Swimming: The students from Year 4 – 6 have embraced the opportunity to develop their swimming skills in preparation for the faction carnival with record numbers of students attending Tuesday and Thursday afternoon training sessions at Churchlands SHS.

A huge thank you must go to all of the families who have been able to get their children to training and also with their assistance with the various tasks of recording and time keeping. You have all been amazing, as training has been a wonderful experience for the students.

Please note that faction swimming training finishes on Thursday 10th March. Children who are selected for the Interschool Swimming carnival will be notified on Monday 21 March. Training for these children will be on Tuesday 22 and Thursday 24 March at Churchlands SHS from 3.00 – 4.30pm.

Thank you to all of the families that have returned their children’s permission form and payment for the carnival. Forms and money need to be returned to your child’s classroom teacher no later than this Friday 11 March to ensure your child will be participating.

The children will receive their individual form detailing their events as well as the parent swimming program and parent reminder form no later than Monday 14th March. I will also be distributing the parent job forms to the parents who have volunteered to assist by this date.

I would like to sincerely thank all of the parents who have volunteered to assist at the carnival. Once again, we have had a wonderful response for parent volunteers, and I have not been able to provide jobs for everyone who have applied however on the day a job may occur and I will be very grateful for assistance from any parent wishing to volunteer.

Parking at the Churchlands SHS will be very limited and I recommend that you park in the side streets to the north of Hale Road and walk the short distance to the school.

Help Required: We would greatly appreciate any assistance with the setting up of the carnival at Churchlands SHS at approximately 8.00am. Please meet us at Churchlands pool if you would like to assist.

I look forward to the carnival and would like to wish all students good luck for their events.

Japanese日本語news

Many students enjoyed the Japan festival in Perth last weekend. In Japanese class I have discussed with students that we will have visitors from Japan in August again this year and that we will be encouraging families from our school community to host. A unique relationship may be developed by our Year 5 and 6 students through the Palaygo email project. In the lead up until August when these primary school students visit us at Newborough, there will be opportunities for our students to email the students who intend to visit. The email project called Palaygo may develop in to Palaygo talk where we will be talking face to face on line. The BYO device initiative at Newborough is certainly making this project a great way for students to make international friendships and learn more about Japan and its culture. More information about this was sent home with Year 5 and 6 students last week. When more detail about the incoming Japanese students comes from Japan is available I will provide it in future newsletters.

Newborough's Nature Playscape

Last year Newborough Primary celebrated it's very special 60th birthday. Newborough's P&C announced that their birthday gift to the school would be a Nature Playscape for all students, now and in the future, to enjoy.

After much thinking, planning, discussing, and consulting with experts (thank you to Kidsafe WA and our very own Jolene and Charles Otway for their work so far) the time has now come to get our hands dirty.

If you look closely you will see that things are already starting to happen in the area that will soon become a wonderful new play space for our children. Hint: Has anyone noticed what is happening to the grass?

Keep your eye out in the next couple of weeks for a special Newborough Playscape newsletter where we will let you know in more detail the plans for our playscape, what materials we are on the look out for and how you can get involved with making this an awesome space for all of our children to experience the benefits of nature play.

So what are the benefits of nature play?

  • "Children who play regularly in natural settings are sick less often. Mud, sand, water, leaves, sticks, pine cones and gum nuts can help to stimulate children's immune system as well as their imagination
  • Children who spend more time outside tend to be more physically active and less likely to be overweight.
  • Children who play in natural settings are more resistant to stress; have lower incidence of behavioural disorders, anxiety and depression; and have a higher measure of self-worth.
  • Children who play in natural settings play in more diverse, imaginative and creative ways and show improved language and collaboration skills.
  • Children who play in nature have more positive feelings about each other.
  • Bullying behaviour is greatly reduced where children have access to diverse nature-based play environments.
  • Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are reduced after contact with nature" (Taken from www.kidsafewa.com.au )

This short clip on nature play from ABC's Catalyst program is also worth a watch:

http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4099330.htm

If you would like to know more and/or get involved with this very exciting project please feel free to chat to Louise Layton or Jolene Otway at school or contact Louise on 0406 652 907 or inkyloulou@live.com .
