Principal's Introduction

As you are all probably aware Mr John Worthy is taking long service leave for the remainder of Term One and for Term Two. I'm looking forward to and am very grateful for the opportunity to act in his position while he is away. John is heading away so will be non-contactable for a few months, if you do have any queries while he is away please either come and see me or email me at Nick.Stenhouse@education.wa.edu.au. I would like to welcome to the school our newest member of staff; Miss Cassandra Adams, Miss Adams will be taking over the Science teacher role from Ms Tucknott and Mr Stenhouse for the remainder of the year. Miss Adams comes to us from Churchlands Primary School. She will be visiting the school this week to familiarise herself with our context and will begin at the start of next term.

I hope all the students have a safe and enjoyable break over the holidays and come back ready for an exciting Term 2 on the 26th April.

Bike to School Day

On Wednesday, 23rd March we held 'Bike to School day'. It was a fantastic event, encouraging active travel within school communities. The day celebrates those who already actively travel to school and encourages those who don't know how to start. Students and parents arrived at school by bike, scooter or skateboard. It was great to see students getting active and being safe, with all bike riders wearing a helmet. We encourage students to participate in regular exercise, not only to benefit physical health but regular exercise also promotes an improved mental health. A big thank you to the parents involved in organising the morning activities and providing a healthy, fruit snack for the students participating in the Ride to School day, particularly Louise Layton for setting up the obstacle course. Of course, Mr Worthy had to try it out as shown in the video! There was a raffle conducted on the day for students that participated in the event. The winners are:

Nature Playground

If you haven't already noticed work has begun on the nature playground area near the amphitheatre near the access road off Wilding St. There have been a lot of large logs delivered, which have been fenced off until such a time the next phase can take place. Please ensure that children stay off this area as in its current development it is unsafe to play on.

Congratulations to Ms Kris Williams and the Interschool swimming team. A fantastic effort by all our swimmers to pull off an amazing win to become the 2016 Interschool Champions! Click on the link to see our grand relay team in action.

NAPLAN 2016

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. This year all students will be judged against the Achievement Standards from the Australian Curriculum.

If you have concerns about your child participating in this year's NAPLAN assessments, please see your teacher to discuss this immediately. Any parent wishing to withdraw their child from the assessments must complete a form which can be collected from the administration team.

All withdrawals or exceptions must be nominated by 8th April 2016.

Term 2 Dance Program: Humphreys Dance

Humphreys Dance will form this year's dance program at Newborough Primary School. Lessons will start in Week 4 of Term 2. The main emphasis in this program is to give children a 'love for dance' and to create a fun environment to learn rhythm and dance as well as social skills development and team work with ease. The program is achievable for every child and the familiarity within the program aids this progress, giving them great confidence and enjoyment. The music used and dances taught are age-related and have been carefully selected and put together over many years of experience in teaching techniques to form a strong foundation to build upon each year developing muscular memory and creating a dance culture. A note in regards to the program and costing will have been sent home this week.

Interschool Swimming

On Friday1st April, our team of 41 swimmers from Years 4 – 6 travelled to Greenwood College for our annual Interschool Swimming Carnival to compete against students from the Central Coastal District comprising of Glengarry, Duncraig, Hillarys and Newborough Primary Schools and enjoyed a wonderful and exciting carnival.

Our amazing swimmers, led by Captains Alice Harwood, and Ben Austin and Vice-Captains Georgia Rudolph and Connor Morris, participated enthusiastically in all events against very good swimmers from the other schools with many close finishes recorded. Glengarry led the way after the first 20 events with Newborough only 7 points behind. The relay events were the highlight of the day with Newborough and Glengarry sharing 1st and 2nd place in many close finishes. Our team finished the day with a nail biting 1st place win in the Grand Relay and secured the Champion School shield for Newborough. We would like to sincerely congratulate all of the competitors selected for an outstanding effort. You all demonstrated excellent endeavour and represented your school with good sportsmanship. Well done.

There are always many people to thank for helping to get our swimming team prepared for the carnival. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to assist with many of the jobs at the carnival. P&C News

It's been a great first term for the P&C and the school with the highlights being Moort Boodja and the Easter Raffle.

Early next term the P&C is organising an OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT where the kids bring a bean bag and a blanket and sit under the stars and watch a movie while eating dinner followed by popcorn or a choc bomb – stay tuned for dates and times.

We will also have the ever popular ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS which are not only a great fundraiser but also offer great deals at lots of popular shops, restaurants and cafes. Once again watch this space.

Finally, you will have noticed the pile of timber which has been delivered for our NATURE PARK. For the many people who want to know, we DID NOT cut down any of our trees. The wood came from a building site which was cleared. This is the beginning of an amazing project which will offer our kids and those in the community a great place to explore and play.

As always, if anyone wants to join us helping out on the P&C please contact me on 0400 791 968.

Have a great holiday.

Newborough Nature PlayScape

As I am sure you will have noticed there have been exciting happenings going on at our nature playscape site.

With thanks to the brilliant liaising and organising of Jolene Otway we were very lucky to receive a donation of a huge amount of timber from a demolition site in East Perth.

This wood was delivered over a couple of days last week with the help of Stirling Tree Services, who we are very grateful to.

This timber will be used for many of our playground structures as well as for retaining the area.

We cannot guarantee at the present time that the collection of timber is safe to play on so parents who do allow their children to play there must take responsibility for any accidents that occur.

We have also received a donation of lovely smelling eucalyptus and banksia mulch from Dickie's Tree Service which will be used in the native garden beds which are to be planted.

We are very excited about these new developments and are eager to move on with developing the area but for that we need more hands on deck.

On Sunday April 10th there will be a Busy Bee held at the nature play area.

Our plans for the day are for some shifting of logs into position, spreading of mulch, finishing of the limestone wall, creation of retaining areas and some planting of native plants.

We would love it if you could come and join us for an hour or two to help get our playground underway.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or the like please contact Louise Layton on 0406 652 907 OR email: inkyloulou@live.com
