Principal's Introduction

Happy Easter and Term Break

This will be my last week as I set off into the sunset for some LSL, rest and recreation. I would like to sincerely wish everyone a very enjoyable, safe, meaningful and relaxing Easter and shortly after term one break. We are most fortunate to have such a wonderful school community of students, parents and staff.

Please continue all the great things that make this school so unique and happy place. Mr Nick Stenhouse will be Acting Principal dring my absence. I am sure everyone will enjoy having Nick leading the way.

I shall be doing a bit of camping, plenty of jobs around the house and catching up with friends. There's quite a list of jobs. I look forward to coming back all refreshed for the start of term 3.

Moort Boodja

Congratulations to Ian and Sabine Pollock, Aleg Novik and the Moort Boodja organising team for a most exciting, challenging and fun Moort Boodja. A great day was had by all. A special thanks to all the staff who gave of their time to help out. A picture paints a thousand words. Have a look at the Moort Boodja picture gallery.

Staff Change

I am very pleased to be able to advise that we have appointed a Science teacher for the remainder of 2016. Her name is Ms Cassandra Adams. The funding for this appointment has been created by not replacing Mr Stenhouses' deputy position during my leave period. This arrangement will free both Mr Stenhouse and Miss Tucknott from their teaching roles providing better support to all classes. Ms Adams will officially commence in term two. She will also take over Miss Tucknotts' Design and Technology and Health classes. She will be working on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We welcome Ms Adams onto our staff.

Incursion

Last Thursday we had our main incursion for the term to help celebrate Harmony Day. The incursion was call Zimboyz. The children were spell bound by their unbelievable acrobatic skills, tremendous repertoire and humorous wit. Have a look at the photo and video gallery for this event. It really is spectacular. Many thanks to Miss Tucknott for organising this electrifying event.

Young Leaders Day

On Thursday, 10th March Mr Stenhouse and the Student Leadership team comprised of Jack Verhoef, Alice Harwood, Shireena Parry and Xavier Middleton attended the National Young Leader's Conference at the Convention Centre. The conference has four leaders from different walks of life sharing their experience of what it takes to be a leader. Below is the Leadership team's perspective on the speakers.

While we were at the Young Leader's Day we got to listen to the person that the paper planes movie was created about. Dylan Parker was at college and saw a paper plane contest. He entered and won, he got a drink and some sun glasses. Then later he got a test result that he had a tumour the back of his head. He got a phone call that he could go to the state finals he said "yes". He came first then later he got a phone call to go to world finals he said "yes". He came third with a paper plane that was a mistake, he named it the "Raptor". Then a movie director called and said can we write a movie about you? Yes was the answer again. Now Dylan runs a successful paper plane business. MASTER THE LITTLE WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF YOUNG LEADER'S DAY and Dylan certainly illustrated the point.

Xavier Middleton

The speaker who inspired me the most was Taku Scrutton from Zimbabwe. She came to the conference to tell us about her book called "Multicultural Me". Her book was about the diversity of people in the world. She talks about how different people experience different cultures, foods and languages in different countries. What I learnt from her speech was that no matter how different you are, respect others, accept others, and treat everyone equally.

Shireena Parry

The most inspirational speaker for me was Drisana Levitzke-Gray, Young Australian of the Year, 2015. Drisana, who was born deaf, is one of 5 generations in her family to be deaf. She was named Young Australian of the Year because of her work for promoting education for deaf children. I learnt that even if you are different you can still do amazing things and all the little things count, even if they don't seem to do that much at the time.

Alice Harwood

Nathan "Dubsy" Want delivered a really inspiring speech. He provided really detailed information as to what makes a good leader. Nathan's job is a children's mentor, he helps children go through hard times during their life.

Jack Verhoef

The student leadership team will be continuing to focus on 'Mastering the Little' during their time as leaders at Newborough. Don't forget to check out the QR Code on their profile pictures displayed throughout the school.

Faction Swimming

On Friday, 18 March students in Years 4 – 6 travelled to Churchlands Senior High School to participate in our annual Faction Swimming Carnival.

With much anticipation from the record number of children who were able to train this year, and from the new students and Year 4's participating for the first time, the swimming carnival was a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their water confidence and demonstrate their swimming abilities in a range of activities from novelty fun events to competitive racing.

There was a wonderful turn out of parents, grandparents, friends and former students to support the children. We would like to thank our former Principal and now Patron, Mr Ian Sherborne for his ongoing support of the school by attending the carnival and presenting the overall winning faction with their champions shield.

All of the children participating showed great endeavour, good team spirit and sportsmanship to make it a wonderful day to remember. The carnival is designed for maximum participation despite the children's level of swimming experience, and all of the children who attended had a fun and rewarding experience.

A huge thank you to the parents and staff, which helped with training and all of the jobs before, during and after the carnival.

Special thanks to our gardening team of Tim and Frank, Mr Worthy, Mr Stenhouse and Teresa Rudolph for your assistance with the set up prior to the carnival and to all of the parents who assisted with the packing up after the carnival.

This year, Connor Faction retained their championship title despite the very best efforts from all of the other faction team members.

Connor Faction had a terrific start and lead throughout the day. Manning Faction maintained second place with Corbett only a few points away up to event 16, when Corbett took over second place at the commencement of the Backstroke events.

Congratulations and well done to all members of every team for your wonderful efforts.

Final Scores:

1st Place – Connor – 810 points
2nd Place – Corbett – 767 points
3rd Place – Manning– 678 points

We would like to congratulate the following children who won the Championship medallions –

Year 4 Runner-Up Champions – Molly Allan and Ben Prance
Year 4 Champions – Sammy Stephens and Luka Otake
Year 5 Runner-Up Champions –Holly Appleby, Daniel Boshart and Shea McNally
Year 5 Champions - Makayla Claussen and Rohan Cooke
Year 6 Runner-up Champions – Georgia Rudolph and Connor Morris
Year 6 Champions – Alice Harwood and Ben Austin

P&C News

Our very own fun Fun Run Fundraiser, Moort Boodja, was again an amazing success. The kids had a ball and even we saw a few parents getting down and dirty as well! Thanks goes out to all of our volunteers but special mentions must go to the main organisers - Ian and Sabine Pollock, Liesel Lavender and Fi and Dave "Hopalong" Irwin.

There are a number of local businesses who support our P&C throughout the year with donations of prizes and cash. At last week's assembly we were pleased to receive a cheque donation from the Community Fund program run by the wonderful people at Chemmart Doubleview (down near the IGA on Scarborough Beach Rd). Many thanks to the management of Chemmart in your support of the Newborough P&C.

Thanks to all those who have donated a heap of Easter prizes and purchased raffle tickets for the annual Easter Raffle. A big thanks to Vikki "the Hoff" Verhoeff and Leanne Prance for organising the draw and organising all your donated goodies into fabulous prizes. Good luck to all the students in the draw tomorrow and a very happy Easter break to all of us at Newborough!

These are just some of the events and activities that the P&C have organised in the first few months of the year. In case you're not sure of what exactly the P&C is: very simply, it is a fundraising and organising committee purely run by parent volunteers and all funds are raised to benefit the school community: YOUR CHILDREN! If you haven't ever been involved as a volunteer in a P&C event or activity, make this the year you will be! We certainly don't expect professional services, just an hour here or there.
