Principal's Introduction

Calendar Dates Clarification

Please note the following key dates in your calendar.

Term Two commences for students and staff on Tuesday 26th April. Monday 25th April is a public holiday for ANZAC Day.

The Term Two School Development Day (Pupil free) is Friday 3rd June allowing an extra-long long weekend for families when you include the Public Holiday on Monday 6th June for Western Australia Day.

Stranger Danger

At the last assembly I spoke to students about several basic protections to help keep everyone safe. Please reinforce these with your children at home.

  • A stranger is someone you do not know and trust and your parents don't know and trust. Treat all strangers with caution. Never be rude. Only speak if spoken to. It is best to say something like, "Please excuse me, my parents/teachers wants me to walk straight home/ to school."
  • Always walk in a group. Best with a known, responsible adult.
  • Walk quickly and directly to and from school.
  • If a stranger approaches you make sure you tell an adult you know and trust straight away. The adult will decide if the stranger needs to be reported to an authority.

Emergency Procedures

The school has updated Emergency Procedures following several incidences in schools here in WA and interstate. We will be having a practice of our Evacuation Procedure and reminder of the school's Lockdown Procedure shortly. These are our two key procedures protecting the safety of students, staff and visitors. If you would like to see what we do there is a laminated chart in each classroom in the school.

It is vitally important that parent and guardian contact details are kept up to date. If you do have a change of details please advise the Front Office staff ASAP, Newborough.PS@education.wa.edu.au or visit the office.

Long Service Leave

During 2016 many teaching staff across the state are required by the Department of Education to take earned long service leave. Many of these teachers hold on to their leave so as not to disrupt the schools they work in. This has meant that the Department has accumulated a large LSL deficit that needs to be reduced. We have several teachers, including myself, who are required to cash in or take leave.

Arrangements are in place to manage this to minimise the impact on the school. Teachers will advise you what leave they are taking and who their relief teacher will be as their leave approaches.

I will be on LSL from Easter, returning for the commencement of Term 3. Mr Stenhouse will be the Acting Principal during this period.

National Quality Standards

National Quality Standard Area 1 : Educational Program and Practice

Quality Area 1 of the National Quality Standard (NQS) focuses on educational program and practice. Part of the standard is that 'Each child's current knowledge, ideas, culture, abilities and interests are the foundation of the program' (Element 1.1.2). In other words, planning a program involves observing, gathering and interpreting information about children. When an educator knows the interests, concerns and aspirations of each child, they can provide relevant learning experiences and support children in their learning and development.

In additional to taking the whole child into account and establishing well developed rapports with each student, Newborough Primary School plans using the mandated curriculum frameworks for all year levels. In the Kindergarten teachers use the National Quality Standards (NQS), Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) (Belonging, Being and Becoming) and the WA Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines to develop their educational programs. The NQS and EYLF are also taken into account across our Pre-Primary and junior primary classrooms but with a large focus also on the Western Australian curriculum mandated to be delivered to our students. You can read more about all of these learning frameworks on the School Curriculum and Standards Authority website (SCSA)

http://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/

NAPLAN 2016

For parents with students in Years 3 and 5, a pamphlet containing information on the 2016 NAPLAN assessments was sent home last week.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. This year all students will be judged against the Achievement Standards from the Australian Curriculum.

If you have concerns about your child participating in this year's NAPLAN assessments, please see your teacher to discuss this immediately. Any parent wishing to withdraw their child from the assessments must complete a form which can be collected from the administration team. All withdrawals or exceptions must be nominated by 8th April 2016.

Japanese日本語News

Welcome to the Year of the Monkey.

In the Japanese classroom this year already we have been busy creating a display for the front office. Next weekend there will be a Japan festival held in Perth. I have mentioned this in class and there are further details here in the community section of the newsletter. In 2016 there will opportunities for some of our students to email Japanese primary students and some may even visit Newborough later in the year. The email project is called Palaygo and I will provide more information about this and incoming Japanese students in future newsletters.

P&C News

Welcome Back

Welcome back to everyone for 2016. At the P&C we've kicked of the year with some Committee changes and lots of discussions and plans for what we can do for the school this year.

We can't start off the New Year without another thanks to our outgoing Pres. the indomitable Fi Irwin who has done an outstanding job for the past three years. Also Outgoing Committee Members Tara Cooke and Vanessa Walker also deserve a standing ovation for their tireless efforts over a very long period of time.

Incoming elected Pres. is myself, Neale McQuire. I have two children here at Newborough and am looking forward to the challenge in steering the committee and to annoying, coercing and bribing you all to be a part of it!

We've got a heap of fun and interesting events already planned for the year including the return of the Disco, the Easter Raffle and a Quiz Night. We're also looking forward to a few busy bees to get our amazing Nature Park under way.

SAVE THE DATE

Most importantly the first P&C event to start the year is Moort Boodja, the funrun/ obstacle course. This is to be held at the school on Sat 12 March. It's become one of the highlights of the P&C Calendar and a great way for the family to get involved in the school community. Put the day aside as you and your kids will not want to miss out on this fun event.

Easter Raffle

We will be having our very popular Easter Raffle again this year. Notes will be sent out requesting the donation of Easter goodies i.e. chocolate, Easter craft, mini games, Easter soft toys, Easter gift bags, baskets etc.

The success of the raffle is dependent on your kind donation of Easter Goodies, so please let's get the donations rolling into the classrooms.

Notes enclosing Easter raffle tickets will be sent home shortly. We also have a need for large baskets for presenting the major classroom prizes. If you are a previous winner or just have a stash of large baskets, can you please return them to be re-used.

Finally, I am looking for 2 capable people to help run the Easter raffle this year. Helen Harwood and Michelle Jenkins have done an amazing job for many years and it's time to give them a break!!

Please contact me on 0400 791 968 or newboroughpcpres@gmail.com if you are interested.

Just Helping Out??

While the P&C Committee is responsible for the majority of the organising of the many events that occur at the school, it can't be done without the help of other volunteer parents from within the school. I am hoping that rather than relying on the "usual suspects", we can increase the amount of people who become involved with their children's school. We we are not asking for days or even hours of help. It may just be turning sausages on a BBQ or helping dig dirt at a busy bee.

I will be trying to get to meet as many parents as possible, particularly those with kids in the younger year groups to introduce myself. All I will be doing at this stage is getting a list of those who are happy to put their hand up on a list so I know who to contact when needed.

Please contact me on 0400 791 968 or newboroughpcpres@gmail.com if you want to volunteer your time or want to ask some questions about how you can assist.

New P&C Committee Members

There has been a changing of the guard on the P&C Committee. After a lengthy election process at last week's meeting the P&C Committee is now made up by:

President - Neale McQuire
Vice President - Sabine Pollock
Treasurer - Krys Hiscock
Secretary - Joshua Stewart
Safety House - Halijah Hyder
Book Club - Michele Sharp
Uniforms - Melissa McNally
Fundraising - Liesel Lavender
Grounds/Natureplay - Louise Layton
School Board Liaison - Matt Gaunt
Canteen Representative - Christine Reger

I hope the new Committee can keep operating at the lofty standards achieved by the previous Committee.

Neale McQuire

Book Club – Term 1

Scholastic Book Club catalogues were sent home earlier this week. Please ensure that when purchasing book(s) that you clearly mark:

  • Child's name
  • Room number
  • Book(s) being ordered.

Return correct money and form in a well secured envelope to your class teacher by Friday 4th March.

As per last year, there is a new easier system for credit card payments- the LOOP system. It is done online and there is no need to return order forms. Any concerns, please let me know.

Spare brochures are available in the front reception area. Online brochures are also available at

http://www.scholastic.com.au/schools/bookclub

As always, if you have any queries regarding the Scholastic Book Club please contact:

Michele Sharp, 0452 524 150 or msharp68@gmail.com

Please continue to support the Book Club and enjoy the rewards that it brings to the school. Every purchase results in credits that allow us to order extra literary resources for the school.

Happy Reading!
