Principal’s Introduction
ABORIGINAL AND ISLANDER EDUCATION OFFICER
I am pleased to be able to announce that the school is in the final phase of employing an Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer to help support students and families. This has been a long-term project that has had many hurdles to jump. Miss Kiahara Hampton will be commencing shortly for two days a week, Monday and Tuesday. Kiahara is a student teacher in her second year of training at Curtin University. She is keen to be part of our Student Services team, lead by Mr Stenhouse, to assist with attendance and engagement. Kiahara will work with students in the classroom as well as parents and families.
Once Kiahara settles I will ask her to provide a short biography and introduction.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE
With the season changing there has been a noticeable change with a small number of students not wearing school uniforms and adhering to the school’s Dress Code. To assist with compliance of the Dress Code I remind everyone of the following:
- Footwear – Closed in shoes / sneakers are to be worn by all children unless specific permission has been given e.g., during in-term swimming lessons. PP and Kindy students have the option to wear sandals.
- Hats – A sun-safe wide-brimmed hat, preferably the green school hat, must be worn throughout the year when outdoors. Baseball caps are not allowed.
- Hair – Hair should be neat, tidy and out of children’s eyes. Children with long hair (collar length) should have it tied back for safety / convenience reasons.
- Jewellery / Make-up - Jewellery, including necklaces, bracelets, rings and nail polish are not to be worn. Children with pierced ears may only wear plain studs or small plain sleepers. Makeup is not to be worn without express permission e.g., for an assembly performance.
Of note, is the number of students wearing loose jewellery such as chains, necklaces and large earrings. These are distracting for students and in some cases are quite dangerous.
Longer than shoulder length hair needs to be tied up and kept neat and tidy. This is especially important as there has been several incidences of head lice in various classes as the weather warms. Head lice can only spread by hair-to-hair contact. Students continually playing and re-arranging hair during class is also disruptive and distracting.
I have asked teachers to let a member of the Admin Team know if students are not complying with the Dress Code so that we can follow up by contacting parents and speaking discretely to students.
It is also timely to check clothing, particularly hats and jumpers, are clearly named. This time of year we seem to get a large number of discarded jumpers in the lost property bin located outside the Deputies office on the verandah.
The Dress Code Policy, developed and endorsed by the School Board in consultation with staff and parents, can be found on the school website in Plans and Policies under the Our School tab. Plans and Policies - Newborough Primary School (newboroughps.wa.edu.au) Uniforms can be purchased through the supplier JFE Uniforms or through the Second Hand Uniform Shop. Details for these are also available on the school website under the tab Parent Information – Uniform Shop. Uniform Shop - Newborough Primary School (newboroughps.wa.edu.au)

UPCOMING TERM FOUR WHOLE SCHOOL INCURSIONS/EXCURSIONS AND COSTS (Money, Money, Money)
SCITECH – Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th October 2023 (Week 3, Term 4)
As a replacement for the cancelled Bricks for Kids incursion in Term One, we reorganised a Scitech incursion for all pre-primary to Year 6 students in Week 3, Term 4. The lovely ladies in the front office will apply any credit from your account to this payment at the time and email you, if you have remaining monies owing. An Incursion Advice Form will be sent home in Week 8. The cost per child will range from $7 to $14, depending on the programs students will attend. All Pre-primary to Year 3 children will attend one Scitech session. Year 4-6 students will attend two Scitech sessions.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Junior Robotics and Coding (Pre-Primary – Year 2)
Learn the foundations of commanding and coding robots with Bee-Bots.
As robots become a bigger part of our day-to-day lives, developing skills to use and code robots is becoming a necessity. This engaging workshop inspires students with robotics and builds their foundation skills in coding such as creating basic algorithms and debugging. Students will work collaboratively to complete a set of challenges, from unplugged coding activities to manipulating Bee-Bot robots through a maze.
Rookie Robotics and Coding (Years 3-6)
Learn how to code and program a robotic vehicle, teaching it how to complete tasks using sensors!
Students learn about robots and their place in research and society, before exploring sensors that a robot vehicle needs to operate. Using Edison™ robots, students will learn how robots are programmed to complete a task.
CSI The Blackmail (Years 4-6)
Using their scientific inquiry skills, students are tasked with investigating a crime scene. They must examine the scene, analyse evidence to uncover clues, and develop an explanation for what happened! Can your group solve the mystery of the Missing Millions?
Beyond the Beaker (Years 5-6)
Prepare your students for a career in STEM with this interactive seminar-style program.
Welcome to the future – where science, technology, engineering, and maths are essential to both our work and day-to-day activities than ever before.
Showcasing how our work lives will change, this presentation explores how students can harness their STEM skills for maximum enjoyment, well-being and – perhaps most importantly – their career opportunities.
This interactive and informative experience is designed to inspire students to study STEM – both now and into their futures. It also shows how STEM is an important component of every job.
INTERM SWIMMING – Monday 4th December – Wednesday 13th December 2023 (Weeks 9-10 Term 4)
Please note that this year’s Interm Swimming is in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 4. This is an 8 day program and swimming lessons will be held at Scarborough Beach Pool. The cost per child last year was $38.00. We do not have the costings yet for this year but the cost should be similar. Please expect the Excursion Advice Form to go home in Week 2, Term 4.
Finally, a heads up! The Book Lists for 2024 will be sent home in Week 3, Term 4. We appreciate these are expensive and that Term 4 is looking like an expensive term! Please feel free to go into your child’s class to look at their equipment from this year to see if you can reuse it next year.

Year 6 Enterprise Fete
You may have heard from your children or have seen it in the school calendar that our ‘Year 6 Enterprise Fete’ is fast approaching
As part of our Year 6 ‘Economics and Business’ curriculum, our students will be operating stalls at our fete to be held on Monday 11th September in Week 9.
While students will be visiting the fete during class time, they are welcome to stay after school with parent supervision. We are asking that parents and community members come through the gates to join us from 2:45pm until close at 3:30pm.
The fete has been a huge success in previous years, with profits subsidising the costs of the graduation events for the current Year 6s. It is very exciting and motivating for our students, and we look forward to having the school community visit us on the day. We are asking our community to raid piggy banks, their parent’s coin stash, do odd jobs and whatever else they can to bring as many coins as possible to spend at our stalls. Unfortunately we have a limited ability to provide change for notes, so we suggest changing these for coins at your local supermarket or car wash if possible.

Chaplaincy News
Greetings Newborough school community,
It’s crazy to think we have only a few weeks left of Term 3.
I wanted to share with you another tool that can assist your student with overwhelming emotions. As adults it may be helpful to you also. It’s called the Circle of Control.
What Is The Circle of Control?
The idea is that there are certain things that are within our control and certain things that are not in our control.
Why Does It Help?
Using the circle of control is helpful for kids because it allows them to take action on the things they can control, while encouraging them to let go of the things outside of their control. Using this strategy of thinking can be a helpful self-regulation tool for any strong emotions that kids might be facing. Whether students struggle to process anger, anxiety, disappointment, etc. focusing on what they can control can helps them to feel less overwhelmed.
For example, a student might be worried because a family member is in the hospital. This is a completely normal worry! BUT of course, we can’t control other people’s health. So, worrying about it isn’t actually helpful.
Instead, we can encourage the student to think about what they can control in that situation - such as how they express their worry/sadness, how they treat the person who is sick, and doing things like praying/journaling, or making cards or pictures for the family member.
Once it is identified what’s in his or her circle of control, create a plan going forward. What can they do about the things they can control? What can they do to let go of the things they can’t control?
Some tools that can be used to deal with things they can’t control include practising mindfulness to stay in the moment, control negative thoughts, do what brings joy, spend time outside taking in nature, and acceptance.

Blessing
Ms Deb
School Board
Hi everyone, I’m Callan Rose – the Chair of the Newborough Primary School Board. I’d like to provide you with a brief update about what the Board has been up to.
Our most recent meeting was held on Thursday 17th August. It was great to have John back in the Principal’s chair for the first time this year – a big thank you to Karen for her work with the Board throughout semester 1. We managed to cover many agenda items throughout the meeting, with some great discussions. Some highlights were;
- a review of the behaviour and attendance data from Semester 1 presented by Nick Stenhouse,
- the results of the Communications Survey. Some really interesting and valuable data. Thanks to all parents who completed the survey!
We are in the process of updating the School Board page on the school’s website. This will give you a better idea of who we are, what the Board does, and how to contact us. Stay tuned!
Finally, our next Board meeting will be held on Thursday 14th September, 6pm-8pm, in the School Library. All members of the Newborough Primary School community are welcome to attend and observe the meeting if you are interested.
Hope to see you there.

P&C News
NEWBOROUGH SCHOOL DISCO 2023
The P&C are hoping to hold a school disco again this year, in term 4. We have locked in a tentative date and thought a Halloween theme would add some fun and excitement!
However, we are looking for a team of parents (2-3) to take control of the organisation of this event from start to finish, so we can make it happen for the kids. The current team of P&C parents who have generally organised all the events in recent years aren’t in a position to take this one on. Therefore put simply, if we don’t have any volunteers come forward we will be unable to host a disco this year 😢
The parent organiser from previous years is more than happy to complete a detailed handover (lots of notes included!) and will be available to answer any questions that arise. The event takes a few hours of time/planning in regards to purchasing of snacks and glow items and creating a volunteer roster. The organisers would also need to be available for the duration of the disco to oversee setup, selling of items, packup and of course just be on hand as needed.
This would be a great role for any parents looking to contribute to the school but may find it hard to get to the P&C meeting and might just prefer to have one event they commit to per year. It is a fun event and the kids all love it, it’s also a great way to meet other parents and kids at the school.
If this is something you feel you could do (rope in a friend or two) then please get in touch with Carly and have a chat about what is involved.

SCHOOL CANTEEN
The canteen is so busy this term and all the kids seem to be loving it. I've seen beautiful behaviour and manners as they come to collect their food, it really is very sweet to see.
Sushi Day last week was hugely popular. Almost too popular, we weren't quite prepared for that volume of orders. I know the kids really enjoyed their home made sushi, it was so fresh and tasty! We'll do it again soon.
The Sausage Sizzle was a fabulously fun day too. Who doesn't love a Sausage Sizzle!
This week we're back to the usual Thursday and Friday Canteen. We'll have a Chicken Tender Wraps special on Thursday and Nachos on Friday.
We are really struggling with volunteer numbers so please try to help out where you can. 30 minutes or an hour out of your day is a huge help to the canteen. I want to put out the specials but I can't get the food out without volunteer help. We're keeping prices very low where we can, however if we have to pay staff, the prices will unfortunately have to increase to cover the cost.
There is no need to have done the training before coming into the canteen. And please put the word out to Grandparents and extended family that might want to volunteer. The more the merrier!
If you are interested, please email newborough.canteen.manager1@gmail.com or register using the following link Volunteer Signup
Thanks and hope to see you soon!
SECONDHAND UNIFORM SHOP
Needed: Secondhand Uniform Shop Coordinator
The P&C is looking for a parent volunteer (or volunteers) to take over running and coordinating the secondhand uniform shop at Newborough. If you’ve been thinking about getting involved in the school but have been unsure of how you can help or have limited time, this gig may be for you.
The secondhand uniform shop is a wonderful service offered by the P&C, it not only benefits our families by providing a lower cost alternative to school uniform items but also prevents many items from ending up in landfill, especially if they still have lots of life left to give!
The time commitment is approximately one hour per fortnight. The shop currently opens fortnightly on a Monday afternoon from 3:00-3:30. However, this could be flexible depending on volunteer availability and in agreement with the school admin team.
The role includes opening the shop on a regular basis, communicating shop opening hours and periodically requesting good quality secondhand items from the school community (via P&C WhatsApp groups), organising and managing stock and sorting items for sale/recycle as needed, and assisting new families with items they will need when starting their journey at Newborough.
This role is easily suitable for one parent to manage, however having a small team of 1-3 parents would be ideal and allow for more flexibility when needed and succession planning as parents move on from Newborough. It’s also way more fun and less daunting to share the load of volunteering.
If you’re at all interested, please contact Carly by phone or email on the details below. Happy to have an informal chat about the role to let you know what’s involved before any need to commit.

BALLOON TWISTING NIGHT
Grab your tickets to the Balloon Twist Night for this Friday 8th Sept, tickets are free but we need these to know numbers for the PIZZA order!! So looking forward to all the weird and wacky shapes the kids come up with on this night.
Follow this link to book, it’s simple!!

BUSY BEE
Wow the Nature Play Busy Bee to spread limestone and mulch was a huge effort for our school community. We had a huge turnout of volunteers armed with rakes and barrows, some spreading, some mowing, some whipper snipping… it was heart-warming to see.
So our access path into the Nature Play is mostly complete now. There is still some compacting to do after the last rain and some sealer to put down to minimise erosion.
The garden mulch has mostly been spread out, there are a couple of cubic meters to go, so jump in and spread it out on the garden areas if you have a spare half hour.
The last part of this project for this year is the top up of the ‘approved’ soft fall mulch under the play equipment. Sourcing this at the right price is taking a little longer than expected but will happen soon enough….and then…. yes… another Busy Bee, yippee!!
See the little slide show with time-lapse video from the Busy Bee day below J
Remember you can be involved with the Newbro Dads by reading this newsletter, FB, Whats Ap, email, carrier pigeon, school ground chit chat or rock up to the P&C meeting tonight- 7pm in the school library. See you there.

Our local Scarborough Junior Cricket Club is preparing for the new season with registration now open and games commencing after the Term 3 School holidays. This year the SJCC will be using our school oval and training nets for several of the teams. One of our dads, James Goddard, is the President of SJCC and is keen to get Newborough students and supportive parents involved.

VACSWIM 2023
As we head towards summer a lot of families are starting to get back into the water or planning holidays by the beach, rivers or swimming pools. It is important we help them support their child to stay safe and confident in the water.
VacSwim provides children aged five to 17 years with the opportunity to develop and progress their swimming and water safety skills during the school holidays at many locations across the State. There are programs for beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmers.
Students who complete the advanced Stages 13 to 16 through VacSwim enjoy the benefit of having their rescue award fees waived by Royal Life Saving Society WA. It is a great opportunity for them and a huge benefit to the community.
Enrolments are now open, and families can enrol online. Translated factsheets and enrolment forms are available on the website in multiple different languages.
Further information and details of fees, locations and how to enrol are on our website.
